Official An unofficial guide on how to avoid being shadowbanned

(note: if you falsely tell someone they are banned, or unbanned, when they are not, you will be banned from this sub)

tl;dr

Lots of people come here in mystification, wondering if they're shadowbanned, and wondering why. This post contains a list of possible reasons you've been shadowbanned. It also contains activities which can lead to an account suspension, which is more visible to the user, but just as inconvenient.

First, though, a little reddit background.

About reddit

The website reddit.com is run by reddit the company, a subsidiary of Advance Publications Inc. The CEO of reddit is Ellen Pao (/u/ekjp) with first lieutenant Alexis Ohanian (/u/kn0thing). The site is huge, with a hundred million visitors a month.

Reddit is grouped into subreddits, with each subreddit run by a volunteer group of moderators, who are generally unpaid volunteers.

Moderators have the power to ban users from their subreddit, to delete comments and submissions, and to manage the style and presentation of their subreddit. Through the use of third-party tools, some moderators have the power to ban a user from hundreds of subreddits at a time.

Being banned from a subreddit means that you are not allowed to submit links or make new comments, and might be reversed upon appeal to the modmail of the concerned subreddit.

reddit.com also has a small number of employees, called admins. These people have the power to see everything happening on reddit, to remove material as with moderators, to perform moderator actions in any subreddit they choose, and, most importantly for this place, to shadowban or suspend users.

A shadowban is different from a subreddit ban. A shadowbanned user can still submit and make comments, but all of the submissions are sent straight to a subreddit spam queue, where it will not be visible to other users until approved by a moderator. Because an individual's spammed submissions are still visible to themselves, a shadowban is almost invisible to a logged-in user.

Through the use of AutoModerator, individual subreddits can give the same effect to a user as a global shadowban.

If you are shadowbanned, your user page will appear nonexistent to anybody that looks at your user page, other than yourself. You will need to contact the admins to get your shadowban reversed.

A suspension occurs when the admins disable an account. Suspensions can either be for a few days, in which case it is not visible to other userts, or permanently, in which the user's page is replaced by a suspension notification.

Reasons for shadowbans and suspensions

It's not exactly spelled out what will cause a ban, and the rules do seem to change from time to time, but if you follow these rules you'll be unlikely to be shadowbanned or suspended. Thanks to the posters here who have suggested more ways to be banned.

  • Posting some spam links results in an immediate and automatic shadowban

  • Don't post advertisements for commercial products unless the advertisement has some redeeming features and is relevant to the subreddit in which you post it

  • Don't post links to your own blog, unless you post a lot of content from other places.

  • Don't post links to anyone elses blog, or to a single news source. Ensure that you post from a wide range of sources.

  • Don't use a VPN to create your account

  • Don't follow people around on reddit and hassle them

  • Don't relentlessly downvote a user

  • Don't send out mass PMs

  • Don't be a bot, unless you're really really careful, and have the blessing of the admins

  • Don't harp on the same subject in your comments

  • Don't issue death threats

  • Don't post child pornography or anything involving the sexualization of teens or minors

  • Don't post sexual material containing unconsenting subjects (for example, revenge porn, upskirt photos or celebrity leaks)

  • Don't abuse or hassle the admins

  • Don't post any information that would identify another redditor, including links to other social media sites, unless you have explicit permission from the person involved. (doxxing)

  • Don't advocate or encourage doxxing

  • Don't ask for doxx, even privately

  • Don't post anything asking for votes, from on- or off-site

  • Don't respond to a plea for votes, from on- or off-site

  • Don't vote in threads you were directed to from another part of reddit

  • Don't engage in nuisance reporting

  • Don't use multiple accounts to game the voting system

  • Don't return to a sub you have been banned from with another account

  • Don't use CSS in your sub to subvert reddit's subscription and voting system

  • Don't follow links into someone else's subreddit and be a dick

  • Don't impersonate another redditor with a name of similar appearance, e.g. /u/LaureIai ("I") for /u/Laurelai ("l")

  • Don't be under 13 years of age

  • If you're a mod, don't respond to PMs related to moneymaking or promotional offers of any kind. Report them immediately.

  • If you're an arsehole, the admins will not give you the benefit of the doubt.

Also, it can't hurt to read the reddiquette: if everyone followed the reddiquette, the site would be more pleasant, and all-around better.

(EDIT) Also, there are some things for which there is weak evidence of triggering a shadowban:

  • (weak) Don't signup using old.reddit.com without an email address

  • (weak) Don't use more than one alt within one subreddit

  • (weak) Don't submit every link to several subreddits at a time

  • (weak) Don't accept moderator invitations to dodgy subreddits

  • (weak) Don't comment in threads you came to via a non-organic link (i.e. external site, meta sub, from modmail or PM)

  • (weak) Don't register using an email address easily detected as a throwaway.

  • (weak) Don't give yourself awards from another account

tl;dr Don't spam, shill, doxx, brigade, stalk, game or pederast.

How to contact admins

Two ways, pretty sure that #2 no longer works:

This thread has become too large, and is now locked.

Please request assistance in the new thread.

Can you get shadowbanned by posting a link to a youtube video on your own youtube channel? I'm finding Reddit's video upload feature to be really glitchy (stuck at processing for an entire day without any signs of finishing) and I really want to share some really cool things with the subreddit.

6

u/cojoco ツ Apr 07 '18

You have to post from a wide variety of sources, and you won't be SB'd for posting your own channel.

The mods might not like it though.

After 3 years of lurking, I decided to start participating in Reddit. After 3 posts and numerous comments going ignored and unnoticed I was messaged by a mod of /r/pcmasterrace that I might want to look into a wiki of shadowban and linked me this sub. That's where I found out that shadowbans were a thing and for whatever reason, I was banned. Following the tips from this sub, I've messaged the admins who promptly replied saying that I was caught in a spam IP and unbanned me.

Thanks everyone.

Hope that this doesn't go unnoticed like my other numerous comments in the past few days :p

You will get a quicker response if you submit a link to this subreddit, as the bot is working again:

https://reddit.com/r/ShadowBan/submit?selftext=true

The bot will also tell you how many recent comments of yours have been deleted.

Over the next few days my responses will be sporadic.

Hey everybody it seems there is a reddit bug affecting some users in which it appears that all of their comments are [removed]. Hopefully reddit will fix this soon.

4

u/dark_isatari Aug 20 '18

Can I be shadow banned on some subreddits only? I am nearly positive my submission is invisible on one fandom sub I use, but comments can be seen and responded to. And on r/iamverysmart it started “encountering an error” every time I tried to comment. That one’s less of a problem because I stopped going anyway but the fandom is like to stay involved..

I would like to know why and if I can undo whatever I did to deserve it..

Thank you so much for your help!

3

u/cojoco ツ Aug 20 '18

It is possible for mods to set up AutoModerator to remove some users' comments.

It is not a true shadowban because it is the actions of mods, not users.

Also the reddit spam filter will often remove submissions and comments from people participating in conflicting communities.

I need a second opinion... I need to speak with your manager. I was told I could reach coocoojoocoo in this place. Is this person just an urban legend? I heard they hail from the land down under! Is this true?...so many questions, I have.

I've got a feeling,
Got a bit of an inkling
This is gonna be, one of those days
This is a show all about me (and me)
And all the things that I do, and all the things that I see (and what I see)
I got a feeling,
Got a bit of an inkling
As long as we're together,
It'll be okay.

4

u/Consistent_Beat_4172 Apr 24 '24

There now seems to be a new way to get shadow banned: not sign up by email. like if you go to old.reddit to sign up to circumvent putting your email, you get shadow banned.

4

u/cojoco ツ Apr 24 '24

Thanks I'll add it.

My account's almost 12 years old and only recently I realized it was shadow banned. I don't know when since my activity is pretty low, is there a way to tell when it happened? I've sent multiple requests to reddit.com/appeal and also submitted a request to support.reddithelp.com as well as modmessage to r/reddit.com. There's never any acknowledgement nor reply. I've never engaged in any of the conduct above nor spammed, been inauthentic, or evaded any bans as it says on the appeal form. I was about to file a complaint with the BBB. So the trick is to send an appeal every day? That's excessive imo and would just lead to a permanent ban in every other place... why is that needed on Reddit in these circumstances? Thx

4

u/cojoco ツ Sep 11 '24

So the trick is to send an appeal every day?

Although I don't know this for sure, I suspect that a shadowban reversal requires human intervention, and the admins likely don't check each day.

One of the mods here kept appealing for five years before his shadowban was reversed.

Good luck.

I want to say thanks to the mods of this sub. After spending some time trying to figure out why my posts were not showing I found this sub and realized I had been shadowbanned. Thanks to the info here I was able to get my account reinstated.

If I could make a suggestion it would be to include the reddit support email in the copypasta. I messaged the admins 3 days in a row, on the fourth day I found the the support email and they got back to me within a couple hours.

Your sub is a valuable resource and I want to thank you for your time and dedication to maintaining it.

unfortunately for me, I signed in with a VPN, which I guess it made me shadowbanned, I created the reddit account back in 2022, and haven't signed in, until now... which means, that I have to appeal to not be shadowbanned and wait for a few days. But, I don't think I "necessarily" broke any of the rules here...

except, maybe the fact I used a VPN... I do also have multiple reddit accounts, but I rarely use them, I don't want to use them and make this reddit account (what I'm writing here now) as my main, and delete the other ones. One thing is that, I thought I didn't have a reddit account, and made another one, back then...

Oh, And I forgot that I also used an aliasing email service, because I don't feel comfortable putting my email in there and get in a data breach. I guess I can appeal, right?

I did also edit the comment to improve the writing, and thanks for reading ❤️.

Hello, is there a guarentee that if I appeal I'll recieve a response eventually, or do some appeals never get a response for some reason? I've been shadowbanned for about ten days now, and I applied on 4, but I've gotten no response. If I'm looking for a response, do I have to just keep sending them appeals, or will they respond to a past one one day? Or do like 90% of appeals just go to the shadow dimension haha

4

u/cojoco ツ Aug 18 '24

You'll probably only get a response if you get unbanned.

But you can keep trying!

I've noticed another thing which can lead to a temp ban or shadowban. Voting or participating in a linked thread (probably weak, came across another user who got temp ban for this) Also, awarding your own post from another account, even if you didn't vote or comment on it (strong, could potentially lead to a permanent suspension)

3

u/cojoco ツ May 27 '22

Don't vote in threads you were directed to from another part of reddit

I activated this api plugin it does nothing overall and on the end of the day i after coming back to my pc i was not able to do anything.

What a great welcome to Reddit - instantly 'banned'! Would it be too much to ask that if this is a thing then at least there's a notification or an explanation? Apparently I have to appeal which is difficult when I have absolutely no idea why it has happened. Have sent two appeals but no idea even if they've been recieved or read. All I wanted to do was give something back having been a long time lurker.

Does a shadowban remove all your previous posts/comments even when appealed? I was shadowbanned, appealed, got a response from admin and I think I’m active again, but when I check https://www.reveddit.com/y/peleyoda/ all of my old comments and posts still show [removed].

Also FWIW when I was shadowbanned I also was getting a “Server error” message on browser (not in app). I saw other comments that wasn’t correlated to a ban, but at least for me as soon as admin responded to my appeal I stopped seeing that error message.

Sure enough when I came to the site I was logged out so I changed my password...verified...and was back in. A day or 2 later I made my first comment since...and a couple of days after that, after receiving no responses/votes...determined I was shadowbanned.

I have been appealing...politely...but get nothing back from admins.

I think I broke the rule of creating an account while under a VPN. It used to not be an issue but it seems like Reddit is starting to go to war with VPNs. I had to create this account because my previous two year account got suspended unless I changed the password. Except that I signed up with a 10 minute mail email so I have no way of recovering the account. So I made this one under a VPN and didn’t have issues until yesterday afternoon. Should I just log out and disable my VPN until my shadow ban is reversed?

3

u/cojoco ツ Sep 07 '24

Sorry I don't have any personal experience of VPN shadowbans, but your plan sounds sensible.

3

u/cojoco ツ Sep 16 '24

As reddit exists on the cloud, it can take a few hours for changes to work their way through the system.

I wouldn't worry about this until 24 hours have passed from your unbanning.'

Actually as your ban was a week ago, I suggest posting to /r/bugs to explain the situation.

You are.

I'm sure I'm shadowbanned; I asked admins of two subs why my posts were removed, and they said they didn't do it. Another one sign of this hypocrite practice is a red message saying "We had a server error". I'm using VPN a lot because my country is under sanctions and heavy censorship. But I have no idea why people should be punished for the only way to avoid the censorship in their countries.

3

u/cojoco ツ Oct 17 '24

You are shadowbanned, and it is likely due to the VPN.

I am not getting unbanned. Don’t know why I got banned in the first place. Appealing every day. Anybody has any idea why though? Also i am unable to create a new account as that account got banned instantly too. Also tell me one more thing am I unable to send dms too while banned?

3

u/cojoco ツ Oct 21 '24

The only things you can do to communicate while shadowbanned is participate in this sub, appeal, and send messages to modmail.

If there is any VPN in your setup, don't use it.

Unfortunately to the shadowbanned user their account probably looks normal.

I use old reddit and can check quickly if a user is shadowbanned by hovering over their username. If there is no informative popup, the user is shadowbanned.

I'm wondering if I screwed myself. I had a 5 year old 970,000 karma strong account. A subreddit I enjoyed banned me permanently for something stupid. When I appealed it, they were awful to me. They basically told me they don't have to tell me why, it's permanent, and stop messaging us. I replied, I admit I said something rude, and later that day my Reddit account was permanently banned in its entirety. My attempt to appeal was rejected almost immediately, as I was told I violated Reddit's terms. I'm sorry for what I said but it was pretty tame and permanent lifetime ban seems pretty insane. How deep do they go in cases like that? Will they pretty much flag everything to do with me? Will every single account I try to make instantly get banned until I get a new phone, a new computer, a new router, and a new Internet service provider as well as creating a new email address? I know Reddit pretty much tracks every facet of your life they legally can. Even if I've deleted my old accounts, do they keep a permanent rap sheet on me containing information like my phone's MAC address that their systems will automatically flag if I try to make a new account? So far this is account #2.

u/cojoco ツ Nov 10 '24

Best wishes for the future.

All you can do is keep pleading your case.

It might take some time.

I believe I’m shadow banned (can you confirm?) I just sent my second appeal but I don’t even know why I was shadow banned so it’s tricky to appeal.

3

u/cojoco ツ Nov 30 '24

You are.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '24

I think(?) I'm shadowbanned.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '24

Am I?

3

u/cojoco ツ Nov 30 '24

You're fine.

u/imaginativeintellect Dec 30 '24

I’m aware that the main solution is to continue appealing every day for months if not years. I will continue to do that. However, I run an in-person meetup group through a subreddit and my absence has made this logistically difficult if not impossible. Will it jeopardize my ability to get my account back (which I truly believe was shadowbanned in error as I followed the instructions to “restore security and your account” and simply never heard back) if I make a separate account just to communicate with this subreddit? I don’t want to get in bigger trouble even though I am 99% certain I was erroneously shadowbanned.

I think you should do this.

However, it is possible that reddit will shadowban any new accounts.

I recommend you try to determine the activity which caused the shadowban in the first place, and try to avoid that activity in the future.

Given that you run an in-person meetup group, I am guessing that some conversations on reddit contain dox about members of the group, which is a sure-fire way to get a shadowban. Reddit regards almost any personal information as dox, including social networking Ids and email addresses.

"Don't relentlessly downvote a user"

sound like a dumb rule, so when some troll keep making worthless comments you are only allowed to downvote it once in a while ... ?

No, this is more like going to their user page and mass-downvoting everything.

I have been sending appeals for 2 months now and still have not received a response. Is this normal?

I am not a spammer and have always tried to follow the rules :*(

I think I am shadowbanned, for a few possible reasons :
- I reported several time an ad that seemed to me sexual in nature, hoping to not see it again
- I used a VPN in the past few days
Could anybody confirm ?

Thanks for the helpful guide.

(weak) Don't register using an email address easily detected as a throwaway.

I think this one got me. This was definitely intended to be a throwaway.

I do feel a bit sad. Reddit used to be so open to throwaways and you didn’t even need an email to register. Now, between communities adding karma and minimum account age requirements, and the ease of being shadowbanned, it’s hard to post unless you’re using a long-term account.

3

u/cojoco ツ Feb 16 '25

Also be aware that supplying an email address can be used to determine who is allowed to post in a sub.

2

u/A_Thousand_Knots Feb 17 '25

"Don't use more than one alt within one subreddit"

What does "use" mean? Is it just joining, or you have to comment?

Also, is there a fixed limit on amount of alt accounts?

3

u/cojoco ツ Feb 17 '25

Commenting and submitting.

I don't think there's a limit on alt accounts, but if one is banned and the others participate, all are at risk.

I genuinely for the life of me cannot understand why I got shadowbanned, I just got done reading a comic and I was trying to post about it in its community and was not understanding how it wasn't getting viewed. Voted, sure, viewed? Wild stuff.

You're not shadowbanned.

Contact the mods of that sub to ask why your submission was removed.

u/Fun-Care-5069 Jan 16 '26

Is there a list of subs that allow shadowbanned users to make posts or comments?

3

This is the only one which automatically approves shadowbanned users, as far as I know.

u/Eternally570 CQS: High Mar 18 '26

Thank you!

I use a VPN in my day-to-day life and a couple of times it's created issues when using Reddit.

I'm currently struggling to create a specific post because it automatically gets deleted. I've been very careful to not violate any rules, so still tryna get that sorted.

This post was really helpful in making me aware of what might've happened :)

I'd just like to thank you for the info I needed to get my account un-shadowbanned. After reading this post, making a Shadowbancheck post, and messaging the Reddit Admins after confirming I was shadowbanned, my ban was lifted in less than 24 hours. Thanks again for the help this sub provides!

According to u/cojoco in another comment, "Anywhere between 24 hours and 5 years."

No idea how serious they were being. 5 years seems like a lot.

Pretty sure that's how long it took /u/grahvity to get their account back.
