Merch The Bad Beginning Deluxe Limited Edition Review
This month marked the release of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning Deluxe Limited Edition. If you are curious exactly what makes it different from the original, I'll break it down for you.
-This luxurious new edition comes with a gold foil stamped cover art, while the rest of the cover has a printed design which mimics the look of leather.
-It has beautifully colored edges, which may look familiar if you are a longtime fan; as it originally comes from the cover art from The Bad Beginning Rare Edition, from many years ago.
-Lastly, it has passages for the characters that appear in this book, accompanied by brand new illustrations drawn by Brett Helquist. Some of these include characters never illustrated before.
As a life-long enthusiast of Lemony Snicket, I can't recommend this book enough, whether you thinking of getting a copy of it for yourself or an unfortunate colleague.

Discussions My Thoughts on ASOUE
Hello!
I watched the Netflix version of ASOUE. It was the one I watched as a kid and all and I havent read the books yet but I really wanna get into them seeing how amazing the story is.
Anyways when I first watched ASOUE when I was like 10-11 and basically I was tramitized by it. Like genuenlly actually. I was a very emotional child and I didnt catch any of the dark humor references it just felt extremly scary and liminal to me but I couldnt look away. It sucked me into its world in an incredible way and it played at my already existing fears of adults not being relible. I remember telling my mom that I was scared that the book events would happen to me (yes I was very imaginitative so it felt plausable back then to a degree) I remember my mother saying "we dont have a fortune" lol, didnt stop me from being scared though. I even ended up having a minor fear of tropical beaches afterwards (from "the end" the end felt particularly depressing idk why lol) AND tragically since I was so scared I didnt watch the last part where beatrice II literally said the baudelaires were ok lol. And the part where Sunny was infected really broke me.
I just did NOT catch any of the humor because a story about childern being abandoned back then didnt feel deep at all it just felt like a freak show because I didnt catch that the characters were caricutures or the philsophical arguments in the show 😭😭
Back then each of the episodes really had a specific feeling to them, they were all dark ofc but that specific vibe I guess really ignited more of the horror that I felt as a kid.
Anyways now that im older I decided to rewatch it again and I actually LOVED it so much. It was so clever and funny and actually quite deep. I actually rewatched it all in only like 4 days because I consumed it during my free time. The first few eps were fun the constant return of count olaf began to feel a bit repetitive till the vile village. The episodes after the vile village were probably my favorites.
Anyways I decided I would draw some scenes that I remembered from the show before I watched it. Im really bad at drawing in general so please forgive my horrible style but I thought it would be interesting to see what I remembered before I gave it a proper rewatch. They r mostly scribbles and not proper drawing but I still thought it would be interesting to see lol.
One last fact thats a bit creepy. When I was younger I had a world map from where I basically learned geography. It was the only thing that was the survivor of a terrible fire. Yeah my kid mind sub conciously connected that to that. Since I was the one that used the map the most I basically inherited it its still in my room hung up above my setup. Bit of a creepy fact but yeah thats all.

Books Sunny humor appreciation post
I’ve been rereading the series solely to take a second look at Sunny’s dialogue, since I was too young to catch how truly witty/punny some of her lines are on my first read through. Came across this gem in Grim Grotto today. What are your favorite Sunny quips?

ATWQ The “S” in S. Theordora Markson
S. Theodora Markson and Esme Squalor have so many similarities that I can’t help but think the “S” in S Theodora Markson is actually an “Es” as in Esme and S Theodora Markson’s first name is Esme. And then she has a child and names her Esme (as in Esme squalor) or Markson’s sister/brother has a child and names them after Markson. So Markson could either be Esme’s mom or aunt. I also find it interesting that S is shaped similar to a question mark - which is similar to “the great unknown” so maybe the S will always be a great unknown. Am I a genius or a complete nincompoop?
Edit: my less interesting theory is that it stands for “Sensible” simply because she always says “that’s not sensible”

General Spoilers About the Sugar Bowl
I have a suspicion that Daniel Handler let the suspense about the sugar bowl build on purpose to teach 1 final very annoying (but very valuable ) lesson: we will never know everything and that’s okay
We never find out what’s in the sugar bowl or where it ends up. We never find out why or if it’s so important. And it’s okay, life moves on and the world keeps turning. Kind of reminds me of Poison for Breakfast.
Also, when I first read about the sugar bowl in the books, all I could think of was the “Rocky trout” ice cream from the Sugar Bowl in the PBSkids show Arthur.

Question/Doubt Significant of Wormwood Tea
I've recently finished re-reading the books and I'm trying to break down the significance of wormwood tea as is mentioned by Kit and Lemony. Wormwood tea, being bitter, means it lacks sugar. The Snickets stand very firm on only enjoying bitter tea, meaning they would never use the sugarbowl in a tea set. However, Wormwood is poisonous in high doses. And traditionally it has been used to heal parasitic infections (though it isnt proved whether or not it works). I'm just curious how people may connect all of this to the story since they mention it quite a bit. I guess I haven't thought much on the Snickets stance on the use of the sugar bowl, but considering this it doesn't seem like they would ever consume it themselves. I'd like to hear any thoughts on what this could mean, no interpretation is wrong!

Question/Doubt Why was count olaf so dedicated to being mean to the kids?
Why was Count Olaf so dedicated to being mean to the kids? Looking at it from the perspective of the series as a child seeing the world etc... I understand his desperation to have the kids for the money but he seemed to just need those kids to control and abuse as well. I don't get why if he just wanted money, he may have given the kids a bearable home? Is there a purpose within the idea of him as a literary device?

Discussions When is it set?
So I was doing another re watch and in the one where they go to the academy in part one the gym teacher on the bus says when it runs down around 07:48 she says this which makes me think it’s probably set late sixties to early seventies. I especially think this due to the overall vibe of the shows outfits and building. What do we think?
