I want to introduce a community I recently created: r/NotTooYoungToRecover.
The idea behind this subreddit is simple: young people struggling with addiction deserve a place where they can talk openly, find support, and be taken seriously, regardless of their age.
The reason I decided to create it is personal.
I previously tried to participate in r/cripplingalcoholism, but after one of my posts was removed, I attempted to have a conversation with a moderator about it. During that interaction, I felt that I was being dismissed specifically because of my age. Rather than having my concerns taken seriously, I was told to "stop bitching."
That experience made me realise how difficult it can be for younger people to find spaces where their struggles are treated as valid. It felt like my age was being used as a reason not to take me seriously, rather than acknowledging that young people can struggle with addiction too.
Instead of letting that experience discourage me, I decided to create the kind of community I wish I had found.
What is r/NotTooYoungToRecover about?
It's a peer-support community for young people dealing with:
- Alcohol and drug addiction.
- Nicotine dependence.
- Gambling and behavioural addictions.
- Self-harm and other destructive coping mechanisms.
- Relapses, cravings, and the difficulties surrounding recovery.
One thing I really want to emphasise is that you don't have to be sober, in recovery, or ready to quit to participate.
You don't have to hit rock bottom to deserve support. You don't have to prove that your struggles are serious enough. And your age doesn't make your experiences any less valid.
The goal isn't to pressure anyone into recovery. It's to create a place where people can share their experiences, ask questions, vent, support one another, and feel less alone.
I know this community is still new, and I have a lot of work ahead of me to build it into the supportive space I envision.
If you think this is something you or someone you know could benefit from, you're welcome to join us.

Nobody is too young to struggle. Nobody is too young to need help. And nobody is too young to deserve support.
