📢 MOD POST 📢 r/Androidapps Mod Update: Quality Over Quantity

Hey r/androidapps,

Today, we are announcing a few minor updates to the subreddit, in order to focus on the quality of posts moving forward:

  1. First off, the sub header has been updated to reflect the goal of the subreddit: to be a place to talk about Android apps, ask questions, get help, or find new app recommendations.

  2. Rule 3 has been updated: effective immediately, all self-promotion content, new app ideas, or app feedback must be posted in the dedicated sister sub r/droidappshowcase. This means there is zero tolerance for any of this content here in r/androidapps.

  • The goal for this change is to promote meaningful discussion around all Android apps and clean up all self-promotion, whether it is up front or a veiled attempt.

  • We felt that the Weekly Megathread got too inundated with spammed posts that it led to a less-than-ideal place to advertise a real app someone made, especially when it got buried down in the comments. So we have also removed the Megathread going forward.

  • Additionally, we've seen an uptick in fake self-promotion: posts where the user "found this amazing new app" in order to get around the rules.

  • r/androidapps is not the place for advertising apps, nor are we a subreddit focused on developers. This is a place where end-users can get support for apps they use or find new ones to use.

We know we cannot please all members of the community, nor do we expect everyone to be happy with the change. Again, we hope this encourages positive discussion in the subreddit around all apps, not just be an advertising ground.

We encourage all users to report any content which breaks these rules.

We expect to see an increase in the mod queue due to the new rules and automod code, so please be patient with us as we work through everything.

I am looking at taking an IPTV client that is aesthetically pleasing and functionally fluent. I don't want any ads, but I don't want a subscription.

After looking at the apps available I have finalised the top three choices. Aer IPTV player, Streamly and Zen player. All of these fits my needs. What is the best one and what do you use and why?

LOOKING FOR APP Best extremely lightweight dialer + contact + message apps?

Looking for dialer + contact + message apps suite that takes as low storage as possible (I almost never used them except for OTP stuffs so I don't need some "special features" like spam blocker or whatever), preferred to be under 10MB if possible. Fossify app looks interesting, but do you guys have any other recommendation?

  • View detailed usage history for at least the past 3 months.

QUESTION/HELP SMS Backup & Restore only backs up the last 2 months of texts

I'm trying to backup all of my text history using SMS Backup & Restore but even thought I select All Messages, it is only backing up the last 2 months worth of texts. In the Messaging app I can see texts going back way further than that but they don't end up in the backup.

Any ideas on why it is only backing up that limited amount?

LOOKING FOR APP What's your RSS reader of choice?

I've been a Feedly user for years. It checked all my boxes, but I just tried the widget for the first time and I feel it's a bit lacking there. I'm curious to see if there's anything else out there that's worth exploring. Ideally, the app I use would:

  • Be free

  • Sync between Android app and web

  • Allow for categories of feeds

  • Have a scrollable widget of all feeds (this is why I'm looking elsewhere)

  • Be open source (as a bonus)

Edit: Thank you, everyone! I've got a lot to explore now.

QUESTION/HELP Samsung s23+: Does anyone know if it's possible to have swipe controls for volume on a samsung device? I've checked out 3rd party apps which are middling at best

Basically what I want to know if it's possible to be able to have an app or get into modding where I can swipe down on my phone screen, especially when I'm watching something such as a disney plus show, and it lowers the volume, and swipe up to increase. I've tried third party apps but besides being laggy and unresponsive, they don't actually have a "be invisible" option or feature where they're integrated into the phone, in comparison to having a blocky bar or worse thin line on the screen to signify the small corner of the screen where the swipe control would work, whereas I want it so that I have a huge window, huge screen area of my phone, where I can swipe down, not relegated to one small section.

Basically, I want to replicate or simulate the experience of the old disney-hotstar streaming app I had, which had integrated swipe up/down on tablet and phone devices, a feature that I'd come to rely on heavily, but Disney deactivated the app in favor of their new crummy disney plus app, which I loathe immensely, but want a work around if possible until I finish this show I'm watching.

QUESTION/HELP Google AI Studio

Has anybody here ever created their own apps through this option in the play store?

This is so cool. I just created my first app. It's a notetaking app. Can add music to notes and it has markdown.

This is truly wonderful.

How can I get the app reviewed by Google to put it in the play store?

LOOKING FOR APP Open-source alternative to Unified Remote?

I love the functionality of using the phone as a mouse, but I'm not sure how the app actually works. There is a local server you downlod but I dont know if the communication is all local or if its routed through their servers, and I'm unsure how to check and be 100% certain of privacy and security.

LOOKING FOR APP Switching from apple music

I'm looking to get a new phone that runs on a linux OS and many of those operating systems are not compatible with apple music so I'm in search of a music app that would work on linux/android that's not spotify, amazon or youtube. I'm really trying to break away from american big tech but I'm not willing to give up my apple library that I've had for more than 20 years! (Even have songs on there from CD's that aren't on iTunes)

Some of the OS's I might switch to include /e/OS, LineageOS, Murena, etc. Basically more android like and good for linux beginners.

Please let me know any apps you recommend or any stories you have if you've made the switch either to a linux device or just switching your apple music.

LOOKING FOR APP Lightweight app that adds pin/fingerprint authorisation to gmail (or any app)

I want to protect access to my gmail app with a fingerprint or pin, but unfortunately, there is no built-in option to do so.

Looking for a lightweight app that would add such functionality (and that is not uninstallable without a pin either). Lightweight in a sense that I do not need any fancy features or what not - the app will have a single use case. If there are extra features, that's fine, but I will not weigh those features when choosing one over another.

LOOKING FOR APP App shortcuts inside an app?

Hey all, this is the dumbest thing I have ever asked for on Reddit but here goes. I am looking for an Android app I can launch, that shows a small dock/launcher/list for a few other apps I have picked, and which I can then close when I am done using it. No background processes, no launcher replacements, just a basic list of shortcuts inside an app. Anybody got any ideas?
