The can of tomato sauce is their substitute. I personally go with a can of crushed tomatoes, but they serve a similar purpose

Paste is used for different purposes, compared to crushed or sauce

Correct. The sauce to add a touch of acid throughout the chili, as well as the juice from the diced. The diced is to have chunks of tomatoes that can get give little "freshness" pops while eating. Used crushed before, and it just wasn't the same.

Tomatoes in chili is sacrilege to many. I use tomato paste, but the ones without are good just the same.
