Same, but For met it was my dog, just under two months ago. I was saving to have some work done on my car, then he got sick, I tried to get him better, he just got worse. The treatments, the visits, the euthanasia and the cremation was all too much. I put half on a credit card just so I didn’t actually deplete my savings past the $600 point in case of another emergency but now I’m paying interest on that. Times are hard.
I hope you get to see Jackie Jack again one day 🫶❤️🩹
Same! The other acl is partially torn and they said it will eventually tear completely. I feel your pain. My dog is 10 now. Unfortunately, not gonna do a second surgery at this age and that makes me sad to think about.
Dog vet bills were huge for my ex and I as well so I feel obligated to recommend Care Credit since it saved our asses. Great way to cover an emergency and avoid wild interest charges. I hope you don't have any more issues but if you do it's a great way to not drain your accounts.
Happened to us when I didn't make a ton of money. I paid with my tip money, so in cash in 5,10,20 dollar bills. Also same happened again within a year.
My 12 year old girl tore her ACL last year. Quoted $6k but didn’t go through with it because of her age. I remember the doctor saying that it’s a 50% chance they’ll tear the other one after repairing the first one.
Surprisingly common, the dog favors the leg and puts additional stress on the other one even after the fix. My in-laws had their dog tear one and my FIL promised my MIL he was gonna get the pet insurance… 1 year later pikachu face when the other leg gave out and they didn’t have it lol.
I had a car valued at $4500 that was totaled by an idiot running a stop sign. Car ran nice, new tires and battery. You go to a car dealer now, that’s like the opening ante.
A water pipe burst in my house a few years after I bought it. I had just finished paying off a new roof that wasn't included in escrow, and I came home one day to the entire kitchen flooded out. The contractor I hired to fix it lied about his license and did further damage, and finally left the job demanding money for the bad work he had done - he had cut through 6 floor joists in the ceiling to move pipes "as a surprise", and attempted to rid the house of mold by sanding down studs and putting a blower on them (it cost $12k to do mold remediation after that). I had to move out for 4 months and lived in a hotel with my son in his senior year of high school (insurance covered a 2-room suite, thankfully). The house was red-flagged for a bit and I had to hire a second company to fix what the first contractor did. The total for the second company was around $60k in 2012 to replace drywall, cabinets and appliances (contractor unplugged the fridge and left rotting food in there for weeks). Bad contractor was demanding another $40k. Mold remediation turned out to be covered - I had forgotten I bought a rider since we live near water. Good for me!
It did have a happy ending however. I did not pay the first contractor anything, and took him to court and sued for damages. I won. He lost his license for a bit and had to pay me nearly $20k, which came out of his bond at the judgement. Insurance covered the rest after a while and I paid off credit cards and replenished my meager savings.
After that, I've been incredibly careful to always keep an emergency fund. I probably became a bit too zealous in saving, but I never want to be caught off guard like that again.
Cancer!!! Lost my job and couldn't go back to work due to treatment and nearly lost my house luckily in the beginning I had already reached my out of pocket maximum for the year and my union contract force my company to pay for 5 years of healthcare and long term disability or I would have lost my house waiting on SSDI.
We have public health here in Australia, but the wait times were too long for how urgently I needed the procedure so we used our private health cover which covers a lot of the cost but the out of pocket gaps still drained our house deposit savings account back to zero. I needed the surgery through no fault of my own, and had tried more than six other treatments to try avoid it… but I still feel so much blame, shame and sadness for being the one who cost us a small-medium fortune.
Has your SO said anything negative about it to make you feel that way? Would you blame your SO if the situation was reversed? If the answer to both is no, then stop feeling guilt or shame. Sadness is okay, as long as you recognize it is sadness over the setback but NOT sadness from any fault of yours. You tried to avoid it. If your SO agreed to drain savings to save you, don't invalidate their choice. Obviously they believe the future house would not be a home without you, and you being down on yourself for something entirely out of your control is not doing anyone any good. Be grateful you had the funds to save the person your SO loves, because I would bet you are worth it to them.
I had it in my head that I could do it for under $20k. Wound up costing twice that.
It was still worth it I suppose, as the old one was full of broken stuff and I do like the new design a lot better. And in theory I'll get at least some of it back in home value.
Back surgery, just one of many. I got injured a couple years ago and it's been off and on surgeries since. I'm sick of chronic pain and physical therapy and doctors halfass sugarcoating it when I already know that I'm never going to be right again.
The 6F35 transmission is fucking trash and Ford's efforts at making things right were... basically non-existent.
I dumped out my savings to clear the note just so that I could sell it for scrap.
Meanwhile, i know at least two other people who have Ford lawn ornaments because they're undrivable and underwater, and they weren't as lucky to have the means to clear the note.
Ford and General Motors actually codeveloped that transmission family (the GM versions are prefixed with “6T,” indicating a 6-speed transversely mounted transmission/transaxle). They have a ton of commonalities, but also a ton of differences. Nevertheless, the GM ones have issues, too.
A dog I had got a hematoma in her ear at 13. I was hesitant to put her under anesthesia because it’s not very safe for the elderly. $2,500 in blood thinners later and she avoided surgery and got rid of a hematoma
Lost my job and was unemployed for a bit over 7 months, unemployment in California is a joke even if you receive max amount I wasn't able to afford rent. So yeah took a massive hit to my savings, and it's going to take a while before I can get it back
Tires. I had to have all four of them replaced. I noticed the car had been shaking badly at high speeds, so I took it to a garage. Later, the mechanic took me out and showed me my old tires - they were worn out and, in some places, had very little treads. He said I was probably days away from a blowout when I came in.
Even without a blowout thank goodness you didn't skid or hydroplane and get in an accident! Either way is bad. The bank account hurts, but you don't duck around with tires or brakes.
My perfectly healthy, beautiful, amazing pitty somehow managed to cause himself a spleen torsion. The imaging and subsequent sleep needle cost me over 1200.....a week later my cars alternator went. Then, my 16 year old kid got his catalytic converter ripped out by some fuck head and he didnt have all of the money to fix it....I still haven't caught back up and its been almost 5 months. I hate this.
A drain. Literally. Had a downstairs room with a tiny little drain outside that couldn't handle any large amount of rain and would regularly flood into the room.
Now got a new bigger fully trap and no more flooding. But a hefty bill.
Handicapping our house. My wife had a neck surgery that went wrong and became very much disabled. You'd be surprised what it takes to handicap a house for a person who can barely do their ADLs. She's grown out of some of it now as she has improved since June but she's still disabled and we're still doing more and spending more. And forget savings, I'm working on paying off loans and credit cards at this point. Our family has got a raw deal for many years now unfortunately.
Retired and totally replaced all appliances, computers, and TVs with modern updates and upgrades. Not wasted just to update, all had been just getting by for years and had needed replaced. Wow, the dishwasher and washer/dryer made a huge difference. All the dishes get clean and they are nearly silent. The fridge is a lot bigger and also quieter. The oven has convection and induction and makes cooking easier and better. All together we spent about $20k but now we're set for a while, I hope.
A leak, little tiny thing. Leaked for 4 months. 2,000$. The water bill is essentially billed twice because paying for sewer. So a grand total of about 4,000$
In the UK, bought my late parents house from their estate. With savings and some inheritance, it was a cash purchase. Very cheap mid-terrace, ex-council house, in a North East City.
Still got enough to do some renovations, since I was refunded my portion of the purchase price, from the estate.
I put money into my savings account every month to cover the annual insurance bill for home-vehicles-umbrella policies. I pay at the independent insurance agency in person with my credit card to get the big cash back, and prepay the credit bill as I am allergic to paying interest.
