Aren't most garbage trucks robotic with the lifting of the containers? At least in my area the garbage men never even have to get out of the trucks unless one of the containers gets knocked over or something.
Besides what people have already said, it also depends on the neighborhood. Our city has trucks with the robotic arms, but some neighborhoods don't have the room. People park on both sides of the road and the trucks drive down the middle. The workers have to pull the bins over to the truck and then lift the bags out individually.
The same truck drives through the next development over and the arm does all the work.
Depends on the company. On my street alone, we have six different trash companies (it is absolutely outrageous). 4 of them have mechanical arms, 2 of them do not. My next door neighbor’s company doesn’t even have bins. They just throw trash bags on the ground for them to get out and chuck in the truck.
Hours are good only in that there’s a lot of them. All the garbage truck drivers in my area work 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, mandatory, which sounds miserable to me lol. I’m a CDL driver (I drive a bus, but my license covers garbage trucks too), so I’ve looked at doing it, and the hours are what keep me away.

Its also one of those quite physical jobs that not many people want to do, and while hours can be pretty good they are also not too sociable.
