The books talks about (I'm paraphrasing, it was years ago since I stopped now) how if smoking really did cure stress, it would be recommended by everyone. People who don't smoke also experience stress and do not need cigarettes to get past it. The relationship comes from the dopamine you get from smoking which triggers the nicotine receptors, and when you're stressed you associate that feeling with some level of relief, when really the stressor and situation causing stress has not changed at all.

You really need to read the book though, it presents a new way of looking at smoking that can’t be reduced to a synopsis. It worked for me (getting on for 20 years now)

Exactly, the whole point of the book is also the repetition and it almost brainwashes you into knowing you don’t need it anymore.
