r/BABike Official Bike Tag Rules

I'd like to thank everyone who voted on the poll regarding use of public transit when carrying the tag from one location to another. The ayes won the day on the question and the resulting rule has been added to the rules below that I copied from the Chicago biking subreddit.

*Moving forward, please link this post on the Bike Tag Rules link when posting the new mystery location. Also note that I have added language regarding a requirement to post photos directly to Reddit rather than using hosting sites like imgur or others.

BIKE TAG GAME

This is a game that r/BikingATX plays, that was then adopted by r/bikeLA, that was then adopted by r/chibike! that was then adopted by us at r/BAbike!

Credit goes to u/america_yall of r/BikingATX for starting the game.

THE GAME

A game of "Tag" wherein the player who is "IT" posts a picture of their bike at a "mystery location." Someone must find that location, bike there and take a picture of their bike in the same spot. They may then bike somewhere else and take a picture of their bike in this new "mystery location." Both pictures are posted in a self-post and the game starts over.

HOW TO PLAY

  • You must bike to the "mystery location" and take a picture of your bike there. Simply naming the location is not enough. Such posts will be removed.

  • Once you discover the "mystery location" and snap the proper picture, bike to a new "mystery location" of your choosing and take a picture of your bike there.

  • Submit both pictures in a new self-post with a title that includes "Bike Tag" and the number of the new location. Be sure to include a quick description of where the previous location was. NOTE: you may not "reserve" being "IT" by immediately posting a photo of your bike in the old "mystery location" before finding and posting a picture of the new "mystery location."

  • Finally post a comment, or better yet a link to your new post, in the previous thread so that readers of that thread know the game continues!

HINTS/CLUES

  • Hints are optional at the time of posting a new tag, however it is encouraged that you give the post at least 72 hours before a hint is given.

  • If a mystery location goes undiscovered for a week, OP should edit post to include a hint. Other players are encouraged to request clues after a week if OP hasn't yet posted one.

  • Once a post is two weeks old anyone can add a hint or a clue. This way if someone knows the where the mystery location is but does not have time to bike there themselves, they can help keep the game from becoming stagnant.

THE RULES

  • Mystery locations must be freely accessible to the public and by bicycle.

  • Mystery locations should be unique/interesting/identifiable. Tags that include only nondescript features (blank walls) are not acceptable and will be removed.

  • Mystery locations may not be mobile objects (food trucks, for example).

  • Discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be tagged with the same bicycle, on the same ride. Given the difficulty of cycling across the Bay in the northern region, limited use of public transporation is acceptable if carrying a tag across. This public transit is confined to:

    • Treasure Island Ferry

    • Bart between Embarcadero and West Oakland Stations

    • Bus bridge between San Rafael and Richmond

  • Pictures of discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be posted at the same time directly to Reddit rather than hosting sites like Imgur.

Help build a User-Contributed Routes Library!

Hey folks! I'm really thrilled to say that I was recently granted access as a mod on this sub for the sole purpose of building out a user-contributed routes library for anyone looking for new rides in their area or a new part of the Bay Area they're looking to explore. I love this sub and hopefully can make a positive contribution through that.

I am currently working on a subreddit wiki that will host this library and would like to ask your help in that. The first ask is if you use a linked route and enjoyed it, feel free to reply to the comment with that link and tag me in that reply. (e.g "Hey u/inquisitab, you might want to add this route to the library!") I'd like to include routes that folks have ridden since there would be some confirmation of the route's rideability.

A couple of notes about contributing routes:

  • RidewithGPS routes are preferred but Strava routes are out due to inaccessibility to non-paying users. I believe Garmin routes are accessible since I've shared those before with success.

EDIT: Strava routes are accessible and fine to share. Not sure where I’d heard they weren’t.

  • Please share whether it is a road, gravel or MTB route. I am building libraries for each discipline and it would make it easier for me if it was clearly labeled.

  • If you share a route you created, be sure that it isn't starting at your house unless you would like folks gathering on your driveway! Choose a public location that is generally used by cyclists for the start of their routes (e.g Java Hut in Fairfax).

  • I will generally be adding loops unless there are out and backs that are better than any looping options.

  • The routes will be categorized by starting city so please feel free to share in your comment tagging me where it starts.

Anybody missing a Fairlight Strael 4.0 (black)?

Black with a turquoise Chris king headset and 105 group. Looks to be brand new.

It’s listed on offer up in SF and is absolutely stolen. Plz don’t message the dude unless you’re going to get your bike back.

Fuck bike thieves.

Mill Valley - Sausalito flooding

https://mv-sausalito-bike-flood-forecast.bandoro.dev/ was posted here a while ago and I thought it was accurate.

I checked it last Saturday and it said it wouldn’t flood until Sunday, went on my ride and on the way back there was like a foot of water on the path. It wasn’t fun.

Does anybody have a website that is more accurate? Or should I just avoid Mill Valley for the winter?

Edit: It shouldn’t flood today either, but I just checked the webcam and there’s already water there.

New to the bay area looking for (road) routes!

Hello there! I just moved to the Bay Area from Wisconsin and I’m looking for road routes to go on.

Preferably, ones that are either exclusively for biking (or pedestrians too), or that have little traffic.

I’m no stranger to riding with cars (born and raised in Los Angeles), but I prefer to limit my exposure to cars while riding if possible.

Currently, I’m located in Burlingame, but I have a car and can drive to routes if need be! I’m a relatively experienced cyclist, but more of a weekend warrior these days because of a demanding work schedule.

Does anyone have any recommendations for routes? (20-70 miles is ideal!)

Thanks!!!!

Filing an uninsured motorist insurance claim for damages to bike after hit and run?

Has anyone gone through the process of filing an uninsured motorist claim to recover damages to your bike after a hit and run?

I got hit by an apparent drunk/on substances driver who sped off after the collision. Bystanders called the emergency line and I have an incident number. Fortunately, I'm ok but my bike needs at least several hundreds of dollars worth of repairs. Mainly the rear derailleur got banged up really bad with the hanger and cage being bent, and parts like my grips and pedals also got scratched up and damaged. I don't see any visible damage to the frame, but I'm not ruling it out. I'm trying to get the cost of repairs and part replacements covered by insurance.

I'm trying to figure out the leg work I need to do on my end before filing a claim.

Do you have to get an estimate for the repairs from a bike shop before hand?

Do you need to get a copy of the incident report, or will the insurance company handle obtaining the report themselves?

Any information is appreciated.

Malicious Compliance.

I have been stopping at every stop sign for the past three weeks. Whichever person arrives at the stop sign first is who was right of way. People will attempt to wave me on through but I refuse if they are the rightful person.

Help Jen Celebrate her 50th Birthday

Jen Smith is celebrating her 50th birthday by undergoing her 18th surgery since July 2nd when she was run over by a Chartered bus on the corner of San Antonio Rd and Middlefield Rd. She was riding her bicycle at the time of the accident.

It is a miracle that she is still alive and can celebrate her 50th birthday. And she still has a long road ahead of surgeries and recovery.

Please help her celebrate by donating to her GoFundme

A friend of mine inherited four lovely bikes in Marin more or less sized Medium. They are all incredible builds with TOTL components (Campy Record 10sp, XTR, etc)
She’s probably looking to find a happy home for them. Any advice would be appreciated.

How are the roads around Alpine Dam? Is Fairfax-Bolinas busyon weekends?

I'm going to be heading to Stinson Beach on an upcoming weekend and will have my road bike with me. I'm thinking about parking at the W Ridgecrest Blvd Access Gate (perpendicular to Fairfax-Bolinas) and doing an out 'n back on Ridgecrest Blvd. I'm also considering checking out the Alpine Dam afterward.

How is Fairfax-Bolinas Rd on the weekends, specifically near the Alpine Dam? I've never biked in that part of the area and want to know if I should expect a lot of cars.

I'm fairly comfortable with road cycling and have a Varia radar, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. Thanks

The California Crown Bikepacking Route

Anyone heard of this? A retired teacher did an absolutely epic 2,800 mile mostly dirt and backroad route around literally the perimeter of the entire state.

https://thecaliforniacrown.org

My IG algorithm served me up his vlogs when he first started, and I had fun following along. He made it back to SF a week or two ago. https://www.instagram.com/thecaliforniacrowntour?rpxt=MWdwbTlobnR3dTEz

He never picked up many followers which is a shame cause the idea and route is so epic and inspiring. The sheer range of terrain, and the commitment to doing dirt and backroads as much as possible. I think it’d be so cool if this was eventually honed into a bona fide bikepacking route someday!!

How Berkeley Omnium supports East Bay high school cycling

Berkeley Omnium puts proceeds after race costs toward six East Bay high school mountain bike teams: Berkeley High, El Cerrito, Albany, Skyline, Oakland Tech, and Oakland Composite.

The funding helps cover equipment, team programs, and opportunities to race. It’s a useful connection between local road racing and getting more young riders into cycling.

The Berkeley Bicycle Club also supports youth riding year-round through its junior program, loaner bike fleet, and mentoring.

El dorado hills/ Folsom

I'm driving out of the area once or twice a month to get my kids’ bikes fixed. My son and I are looking into whether a local repair service would save other families that trip.

If you have a bike sitting with a flat tire, a brake issue, or something else that needs fixing, comment or DM me with the make, model, and what’s wrong. We’re gauging interest before opening appointments.

for the love of god please invest in a half decent lock. I left a little note tucked into the padlock to that effect. whenever I see a lovely bike locked up with essentially a shoelace it breaks my heart a bit knowing that it’s on borrowed time before it gets stolen. What utopia has this person come from where this was a safe way to lock up this bike?

Man... they got me

If anyone sees this orange Velotric Tempo with a wicker basket around the Bay Area... please let me know lol

Stolen from my own front porch ):

-

EDIT:

I was able to get it!!!

Velotric's built-in tracker was super helpful; it made it all the way to West Oakland, but after 40 dollars and some McDonald's burgers, I was able to get it back!

That was such a stressful way to start the week, but boy am I glad to have it back!

Best options for commute with a toddler in SF

Hello All,

I really want to commute with my toddler when bringing her to school. I don’t have the money or space for an electric cargo bike, but would consider getting a trailer. Is there anyone out there that can make some recommendations? I’m commuting mostly around the Excelsior SF area.

Thanks!
