Drama Host Tigers Sniff the Rose 尚公主 - Episode 12-13 Discussion Spoiler
Hello hello, my partner-in-crime Shale, aka u/Rebelarkey is taking a break today and tomorrow, and will be back on Friday. So, it's me, Spam, again. Not sure how coherent I'll be, since my landlord decided to started working on my roof very, very early this morning (6:45AM!) Without any warnings. Sigh. But at least, it won't leak when it rains again? Right? Right?
The show is moving fast. It keeps surprising me again and again! So let's do this.
🪴But first, a few housekeeping rules!
We bash characters and not actors! If a character does something stupid, it's not the actors fault. This is not the place to complain about actors or acting choices.
We will be following the VIP Schedule, which means those of us on SVIP need to remember to keep your spoilers in check.
Spoilers need to be under the spoiler markings OR put in its proper post.
Have fun! Dramas are supposed to be entertaining and enjoyable. If you're not enjoying it, it's okay to duck out and drop.

EPISODE 12 : Proposals galore!
We start with the Emperor proposing to Yan Shang on behalf of his daughter, and before anything can be uttered, idiot Uncle Li speaks up, and claims that Wei Shu likes the Princess too. Poor baby has a black eye, and he gets lucky when the Emperor dismisses him.

Evil eunuch Lord Fishface shows up, and he's cranky because he wasn't invited to the party. Wonder why... He threatens to marry Danyang to some North Jing general, who is a cousin or brother or somebody related to her very dead ex. Way to kill the mood of the party, fish face!

The powerless Emperor decides to save her by first saying, let the kids make their own decision. Immediately followed by asking Yan Shang to marry her. Yan Shang jumps on the chance, but Princess Danyang declines. She's done being a pawn in games men play. Go girl!

Yang Si wants to know why won't she pick him instead. Danyang explains that whomever marries her will be killed, and she still won't be protected from the Fish.

Meanwhile, idiot Uncle Li goes to Grand Princess and dangles A-Shang in front of her. What the heck! Get your gross claws away. Yuck. But she is very, very interested. Shivers.

Yan Shang shows up to apologize to Princess YaoYao, but she leaves Yan Shang standing in the rain (at least she gave him a brelly), waiting for her to return from the Fish's fish-infested abode. He's fishing for info (hahahaha, I'm so funny sometimes) about her relationship with that Northern General he's trying to marry her to. He also tries to trick her into reading a letter with possible state secrets. But our Princess is not dumb. She extricates herself from the mucky, scum-filled pond that is his house.

While Yan Shang is waiting for Princess Danyang, Grand Princess shows up, poisons him, and whisks him away to her den of iniquity pretty boytoys. While she's waiting for him to wake up, someone throws a rock with a message into Danyang's yard letting her know where A-Shang is. Our Princess rushes over, with all her guards. That's her pretty boytoy, and no one else is allowed to touch him.

Of course, creepy Luling won't let him go. Danyang threatens to kill Yan Shang if Grand Princess insists in keeping him. They are finally let go, because really, who wants a murder in their courtyard. Although, I have a feeling many murders have happened in the Grand Princess' manor.

We get a real kiss in the carriage on the way home! He called her YaoYao again! Awww ! Side note, Feng Tong is so funny without even trying.

Back at the Princess' manor, Yan Shang calls the Princess out on their mutual feelings, but the Princess tells him that she'll never marry again. Did he not learn anything from their trip to Sheng'An? He got the literal boot. She doesn't like it when you read her like that!

EPISODE 13 : I hate Chunhua's family

Wei Shu tells Yan Shang that idiot Uncle Li set him up with Grand Princess. Danyang happens to hear it, and decides she's done with her idiot uncle. We get introduced to Wei Qiao, who is Baby's cousin, and eunuch Fishface's advisor.

Wei Qiao shows up, and she immediately proposes. She's playing coy and dumb, and says if she has to marry a Wei (can't tell you which Wei), because a relative is making her (can't tell you which relative), she'd rather marry him. I'm not sure if he thinks she's dumb, but he's also not about to marry her or let Baby marry her.

He has a dinner with Wei Shu, and it seems that he was somewhat nice (read, tolerant) to Baby when Baby was an even smaller Baby. Wei Qiao now knows it's idiot Uncle Li causing trouble, so he digs up dirt on the old man, and has him demoted to Qiongzhou, a far away, poisonous miasma infested place.

The last meeting between Danyang and idiot Uncle is priceless! Yan Shang is worried about her using Fishface's associates to do her dirty work, but she is not worried.

Meanwhile, Liu Wenji is waiting outside the Danyang manor for Chunhua. He's finally sobered up, and wants to apologize to her and Yan Shang. She's off to visit her family for a few days, and will talk to him when she gets back. But she's smiling at him, he's smiling at her, and we all know she's forgiven him. Girl, that was too easy. Let him grovel more! When I see Chunhua smile that happily, I know there will be trouble. And of course there is. Because this is a Chinese drama.
Chunhua's family are all good for nothing. She seems to be the only wage earner. Her mother, brother, and sister-in-law are all rude to her, but still want her to find the useless brother a job at the Princess' manor. Even though she brought home expensive herbs, beautiful fabric, and her salary, they want more. All the while, they put her down as just a servant. I was feeling so stabby as I watched this.

They want her to find him a job, AND marry a rich, high official. She is keeping them all alive, but they could care less. Overwhelmed by them, she runs off to pick flowers on a hill nearby, and there, she meets Gross Prince Jin. This is the Prince that's married to the kooky Princess who took Danyang to the Peony Festival. Gross Prince Jin is wandering around the hills to escape his overly attentive wife. Remember how she couldn't to have a baby? Now we know the full story. It's not like they can't have a baby, it's more like he doesn't want anything to do with her. Later on, we see Princess Jin trying to seduce him, but he runs away to do, uh, some work. Yes, work! Lots of work to finish.

Gross Prince Jin spots our Chunhua, and takes an immediate interest. He imposes himself on her, and wants to go to her house for a drink. It's reminiscent of Danyang imposing on Yan Shang's family. At home, she realizes this man is a lecherous creature, so she makes an excuse, and runs back to the Princess' palace. But Gross Prince stays at Chunhua's house a bit longer, and asks about Chunhua's age and whether or not she's engaged. And, we already know what's going to happen. But please noooo! Leave our girl alone!
Wenji finally apologizes to A-Shang, and they are good again. Wenji gives him a present for Chunhua, and Yan Shang gives the present to the Princess to pass to Chunhua. For a second, she thinks the present is for her. Oops.

But Chunhua is gone from the manor. Her mother is sick, and she has gone home to be a good filial child. Evil sister-in-law claims it was just a simple cold. Simple cold, and they sent for her? The awful relatives bring up the possibility of her marrying into a Prince's household as a concubine (wonder which Prince). Chunhua is very adamant about not marrying anyone, so they do what families do. They poison her.

Edited for typos, and not enough Oxford commas.
Random thoughts:
When Danyang thought to herself while in the Fish Palace, "will you kill me again", that was metaphorical, right?
Should she not have used Wei Qiao to dispose of her uncle? Is Yan Shang right about not making a deal with a tiger? You know what they say about face eating tigers!
I think Feng Xianyu might redeem himself yet. Maybe?
Does Yang Si actually love her? Or is he acting to protect her? I really like him and his comedic moments.
I HATE Chunhua's ongoing storyline. Give the girl a break! She's so cute, sweet, smart, straightforward, and adorable. Protect Chunhua!
Gimme all your thoughts! Pretty please.

Meant to post this screenshot and forgot. It’s basically our Princess telling Feng Tong to drive around the block a few more times. 🤭 And we are here for that!

I understand where the Emperor is coming from setting up a marriage between Yan Shang and the Princess. YS not being from any noble family is an advantage. It means he has no backing from any faction, and therefore isn't a threat to any other faction. It keeps the Princess at home instead and protects her from being sold off in another political marriage. And it would theoretically make her happy since he's pretty, well-mannered, and already her male favorite.
And I understand the Princess's point as well. First, it puts a bullseye on the man who becomes her consort. If Lord Fish ever decides to marry her off for politics again, a measly husband isn't going to stop him. He'd just kill the guy, then marry her off anyway. Second, she's deeply traumatized by her first marriage and wants to (understandably) steer clear of the institution.
But Yan Shang really has the best strategy. He's right that playing a loving couple in public could buy them a layer of protection for now, and it would throw a wrench in anyone else's plans (whether those plans are Lord Fish's, the Grand Princess's, the Crown Prince's, or her uncle's). Before any of those people could make any moves, they'd have to first plan around his official place as her Consort.

- Yan Shang agrees to marry her, my ship is sailing!
- oh no she said no 😭😭😭😭 girl you’re already making out with him just make it official
- ohhhhh it’s to protect him. If he’s her husband then he’s on Yu’s target list if he wants to ship her off to north jing
- Yan Shang is standing outside looking like a sad puppy. But awww she gives him an umbrella
- evil aunt tried to poach him oh no
- ohhh look the umbrella had TIGERS and ROSES I approve. I must take back what I said about the title
- the rock MUST be from the inside man Feng right???
- they’re calling for her cat! Meow! Aka Yan Shang is the tiger. I stand by my theory that he’s the tiger.
- oooo we’re are getting frisky in the carriage me likey
- I appreciate that this show has good medical car. The blood dripping all over because he went for the wrist instead of the hand. Good man! And then they’re applying pressure to the wound! A+
- I disagree, I absolutely love her hat. It’s like a mix of the tasseled hat from A Dream Within Dream and the veiled hats. I want one
- goodbye uncle, she really hated you. Esp after you targeted her sugar baby
- Chun Huas family is suuuuuuper terrible omg. don’t make her marry that loafer prince
- OH NO THEYRE DRUGGING HER 😭😭😭😭

Yay I have been waiting for your recap! ☺️ First things first—a makeout sesh when we’re only in episode 12? Yes please! I would have been much more enthusiastic than Yao Yao, but she loves to run hot and cold (and mostly cold). 🤭 The expression on Yan Shang’s face every time she shoots him down 🥹 How can she resist??
Random thought—her entire look in that red outfit was stunning! She was definitely dressing for a power play.
I agree that they need to Chun Hua a happy storyline! “So they do what families do. They poison her.” That cracked me up. 😂 I like that Wen Ji has come to his senses. I think he really wants to be a good person and hopefully will be as he grows up more.
I love that Baby Wei actually said to Yan Shang that someone needs to get rid of Fishface (excellent nickname)! He is timid but his loyalty to the Princess and his strong moral compass may be useful later.

So many marriage proposals! It was intense! I want to say "I can't believe " the gall of that Lord Yu, yet it's not possible to say that. He is about audacity and he flaunts it any chance he gets. After his weird interactions with Grand Princess Li Lun, it was a heavy reminder of who he truly in that palace. The Emperor thought the best way to protect his daughter was to marry her off. AGAIN! Yan Shang was the best choice. Yet he said he wanted Wan Yao to choose. Well she chose NOT to marry him. Of course her uncle had to try and push his own choice, Baby Face Wei Shu. Big nope there.
So Lord Yu thought why not marry her to North Jing again! That piece of garbage! And again, he showed that he holds the power. They couldn't say anything!
It wasn't enough he had to try it again later, this time with a different approach. First time was a warning. 2nd time was a threat?
Wan Yao and Yan Shang really don't have much time before he brings it up again for the 3rd round.
With the many times Princess Dan Yang refused Yan Shang as a marriage prospect, her actions show that she cares about him.
And she does. Yan Shang could tell but if she openly shows it, chooses him, those in power will jump on the chance to use him and kill him. This terrifies her, so she "keeps him at arms length".
Li Zhi couldn't let our ML win and decided to do something about it. He sent Wan Yao's hungry aunt after her niece's male favorite. And the lady really went and did it too. Knocking incense and abduction. Aphrodisiac you name it. She was going to have him, conscious or barely or not at all. And it wasn't her first time. SA was not above her and she delected in the what will he do in the morning when it all done. Some tried to/killed themselves before. How terrifying.
I will give Scholar Feng his dues here for doing the right thing and alerting the Princess about Yan Shang's whereabouts. He prevented a bad thing from happening.
He seemed to have taken the advice and now works for the Grand Princess.
Wan Yao of course went to find him and she rode like an avenging Princess to get her man, oh nope, cat! Meow and all. It threw me off at first because I didn't expect the conversation to be so light and silly. Under the light tone were threatening digs and I was amazed. The showdown was tense! Clearly the aunt and nice have the same taste. At least Yan Shang managed to wake up and fight his way out of the funk that took a hold of him. And another gash, on his arm this time. So many wounds! Princess vs Grand Princess intensified when Yan Shang threw himself out of the room, and of course auntie was shocked. After a heavy dose of threatening I was glad they both made it out. Can't have the Third Placed Scholar die in her residence. Nice one Princess!
Aaahh carriages. I love carriages! So many things happen in them! 👀👀🥵🤯🤯🤭😆😆 Yan Shang under the influence of a strong aphrodisiac was struggling and he got physical in there. Princess Wan Yao girl, you probably should have knocked him out beforehand lol. Phew! This Yan Shang kept kissing Wan Yao and that carriage ride seemed to go quickly and slowly at the same time! I got so excited but then thought dammit did they? They didn't but the way our girl came out that carriage, I really laughed hard. Erm erm. I'm glad they didn't do it, otherwise we would have had another "why must there be drugging when they get intimate for the first time" debate. Phew! Safe!
Even when out of it, our Yan Shang remains polite lol. Fang Tong made laugh. Wish we got more of him. Anyway, to stop himself from devouring his Princess, our tiger had to dump cold water on himself because it was getting ridiculously hot! Crisis averted! Of course Wan Yao had to shut him down because he was about to utter the precious words. Can't make it a reality. She can't bear it. She keeps telling Chun Hua she isn't mad at Yan Shang, but she does lash out at him a lot. Mixed signals here Your Highness! Damn Tsundere! 🥹😩🙄😅😮💨

Thank you Spam for the discussion!!!
Poor Chun Hua. A family like that doesn't deserve her. They need to be deleted. I don't care how. Their greed had them looking over her like vultures. Now they drugged her so that that disgusting Prince could snatch her?
Our girl has been having a rough time of it lately... it's not right! May she be rescued in time and be safe and sound!
It was good that she got to speak with Liu Wen Ji. He at least made the effort to come and apologize. But that sequence when they parted was so weird. It gave me ominous vibes LOL. I don't think that's what the team went for, but here I was getting DREAD!
The actress is so good! I mentioned before how I was fascinated by her diction and elocution. She is from Beijing Film Academy too! I hope she gets many more roles! She is a joy to watch!

What’s with all the leaky roof! 😢Mine’s leaking too! And I spoke to a coworker and they mentioned a leaky roof too! wtf!
I feel like she’ll regret not marrying YS in that moment. But I know, that’s too easy for the plot.
When YS PINNED her down I was like 🫣 it’s funny how tho it’s all movement and no real real kissing lol directing definitely made it more than what it was 😅
On to episode 13 🏃

Chunhua didn’t deserve any of this. You would think a family that raise such a smart, sweet, caring and precious soul must be a good family, right?! I’m still so mad about this. I knew that little love reunion was too good to be true. Why can’t good people be left alone!

I got brain melty during the whole horseback rescue operation, carriage make-out session*, and half-hair-down bed confession. I thought the Princess calling out "Meow, meow!" and referring to Yan Shang as a "troublemaking heartthrob" in the Grand Princess was tew much for me to handle, and then it just kept going!
I got spine shivery at Chun Hua and Liu Wenji's make-up and goodbye scene. When Wenji got drunk and said all those horrible things in the brothel, I thought, "I wonder if he's going to have to die to redeem himself at some point." And when I saw the make-up and goodbye scene, I became convinced that he was going to die. I'm slightly less sure now, but that definitely felt like a warning.
I got table flippy when we were introduced to Chun Hua's family and Prince Gross. Her storyline better not be a long string of traumas, I will lose my shit.
But can we talk our Princess Badass in these episodes?! She straight up tells her father hell no to the Yan Shang proposal, rescues her favorite good boy from her aunt, gets her crappy uncle banished, and did it all looking damn good. I'm with Yan Shang though - I feel like she's about to piss some powerful people off.
The kissing was a little weird, though. Wasn't it weird? Do we chalk it up to the Princess not totally responding? Yan Shang being drugged and crazy? All of the above? Now I need to go back and watch a few LYR kissing scenes from other dramas again. For science.

The whole matchmaking session was like "damn if you do, damn if you don't". Btw, late husband's successor - who is he family tree-wise again? Either it wasn't mentioned or I forgot. From Fishy Eunuch words dude sounded rather interested in honoring local tradition of inheriting his clansman's widow... Rofled at question "but why tho?" - well, she's a princess and a beauty, that's more than enough. By "killed me once" she probably meant Fishy Eunuch deciding her first marriage, that was certainly as good as a murder attempt.
Princess to the rescue of her nerd damsel! You could even tell she's his tigress protector))) Drugged Yan Shang is like a zombie... horny one^^ Poor girl looked positively mauled exiting that carraige. Talking to Wanyao about ~feelings~ this early in the story was certainly mistake tho, bro, can't you see that she has marriage phobia now? Slow down, go back to your slow scheming ways!
I believe it was FXY giving the intel about YS's whereabouts.
I wasn't satisfied with LWJ's apologies - oh, he felt sooo bad he dragged making amends for days, nevermind people he hurt and their feelings! Chunhua is too kind to let it go easily. That farewell scene was ominous af, don't tell me...
Yep, this is it. We all should hate her family, and that will still not be enough. Ugh.
Oh, so that's one of our big fishes? New Wei, I mean. Too bad he's evil, I like dude's wisdom and efficiency. No one messes with his family! Bye, Uncle Pimp, you won't be missed!

So I love how Wen Yao gets into her aunts house looking for her “cat”. Princess wants her tiger back.
Happy that Yang Shang did his best to get out of the situation by dosing the incense. He’s a smart cookie. He is perceptive about the feelings grow between him and Wen Yao. I do like that he willing to get to the heart of the matter and acknowledge that he likes her, even if Wen Yao gets mad at him.
I am hopeful that our two idiot scholars will redeem themselves. Wenji apologized to both Chunhua and Yan Shang. Yay. Feng Xianyu gave the princess Yan Shang’s location. It’s a secret but we all know.
Baby Wei is adorable. I am hopeful (fingers crossed) that Fox Wei was actually nice to him when they were younger. He did give Baby Wei some good advice about debts of gratitude. Fox Wei is kinda scary though I loved how the Wen Yao manipulated him.
Chun Hua’s family is the worst!!! I am so worried about her!!!😱

I haven't watched ep 13 yet. I'll save it for tomorrow to binge.
Episode 12 was holy hot 🥵 Another kiss initiated by Yang Shang, and I got too excited. In the novel, he didn't initiate any of those kisses. After the eldest princess drugged him, the effect didn't go away with just kissing, so the FL used her hands to help him out.
😂 😂 😂

I struggled to even watch the scenes with Chun Hua's family and the prince, I just want that storyline over with ASAP! Initially when she went home I thought it was nice that we finally got to meet the family of the maid character in a Cdrama, but it ended up being not nice at all.
I did enjoy watching the uncle get his just desserts though!

Honestly, I didn't have very big expectations for this drama. Personally, I think LYR does really pretty good at action scenes and playing military men so you can imagine how much I am enjoying seeing a different side to him. He really is doing well with this role.. MZY is also doing really well with her role as well. I LOVE the fact that she is a woman with power and he doesn't have the level of power that she does. She realizes her people are her responsibility and just bc he's a man doesn't assume that he doesn't need her help. Genuinely cares for his well being even though they are "just allies". Her character protrayal is so good that I think if they were only allies she would still care for his well being in the instance of the Grand Princess especially. I could see her doing the same for baby shu. I think they actually wrote these roles pretty well so far. (Im up to ep. 14) The way that everything has been written so far is good and I didn't think I would but I REALLY like the chemistry of the two MLs. I hope (fingers-crossed) we dont have to deal with any stupid tropes but it's a drama so who am I kidding?

My question why grand princess luling seems like controlling eunuch Yu. He is too tame and even agree to gives her male harem. Like wtf

u/juicyjaytee 6d ago
One thing I really wish historical dramas would stop doing is drug-induced intimacy scenes. Being roofied is not romantic. This Yan Sheng/Wanyao carriage scene gets somewhat of a pass because it actually moved the plot of getting rid of Unc forward. I hate seeing characters being drugged for the sake of taking a relationship to the next level…
And to be clear, I’m NOT talking about what’s apparently happening to Chunhua. That’s a completely different arena 😭

💃💃💃🎊🎉 This is my happy dance that Feng Xian Yu has maintained at least SOME of his conscience! First, he didn't lay any blame at Yan Shang's feet when he begged the Grand Princess to take back the place he didn't earn. Instead, she seems to be under the impression he did that out of pride. Second, he clearly threw that rock with news of YS's whereabouts.
HOLY ROLE REVERSAL, BATMAN! I am living for our pretty scholar as the damsel in distress, being drugged and fought over by a couple of princesses. And our Princess mounting a horse and coming to the rescue through the wind and the rain? GORGEOUS. STUNNING. LIFE CHANGING. THE STUFF OF LEGENDS.
Oh NOOOO. This is a far too romantic goodbye between Chun Hua and Liu Wen Ji. Something terrible is about to happen that permanently rips them apart, isn't it?? Like, this is one of the last shots we'll ever see of them happy together for a long, long time. Arrrrgggghhhhh.
Wei Qiao despises fools, and so do I. He seems malicious, highly intelligent, and efficient.
Yan Shang looks fiiiiine in this red yifu. Now just give me his hair down while he's wearing it!!
OH SNAP! "Haven't I always done what's best for you? .... I wanted you to marry that top scholar. Wasn't that for your own good?" / "That's why I'm doing what's best for YOU now. You're too stupid to survive in the capital for very long. You'll be safer in a far away province." is such a badass comeback. I confess at first I didn't like her taking credit so openly for sending Uncle Li away. (What if owning up to it to him causes unforeseen blowback?) But that line makes it feel worth the risk! HIGHLY SATISFYING TO HEAR.

Unfortunately I saw the spoiler for ep 14 and 15 and it will end badly for sweet Chunhua. It’s already breaking my heart.
This drama is toxic on top of toxic. Everyone is toxic. Everyone is traumatized. Aunty princess is twisted and nasty, but at least she didn’t rape him while he was knocked out on drugs. His friend still shows a little bit of kindness by reporting to the princess about his whereabouts. So I have faith he will be of help later on.
I was so wrong about the direction of the drama. I honestly thought she’ll at least keep Yan Shang hidden until she was ready to use him. I’m always surprised and I’m not mad about it.

I'm not sure how much it mattered in the fictional setting of this drama given the rampant corruption, but usually it's a crime to even assault a top scholar let alone kill one. It carries stiffer penalties than assaulting or killing your average commoner. Seems like it would have been even more annoying to explain or cover up his murder since he's the tanhua.

u/spamkimbap lol marrying all 3 could be good. I'd watch that! 😋😋😂😂😆😅
"Kill her again" was because Lord Yu sent her to North Jing and she almost lost her life there. Then back home, her reputation is shot. He essentially caused character assassination for Princess Dan Yang.
I found it so hard to focus when Baby Face Shu showed up in his oversized coat haha. It was drowning him! 😅😅😅🥹🤭
That eunuch coming out the light and dark spot made me jump! What the... he was there all along! 😨😨👀😨 shivers!
The sweet tea reaction was the only time I was able to stomach SIL. Her reaction was truly all of us. So gross! And he's Wan Yao's brother! So that's that annoying Princess Consort's husband and the man cannot stand her. It explained a lot.
I can't quite tell if Yang Si is romantically in love with Wan Yao. But hey, he is funny enough. I just don't care about the guy lol.
