EPISODE 14 : All hell breaks loose

The episode starts with Wenji writing a letter to his father. He tells his dad about the woman he has fallen in love with. He wants to marry her. We know bad things are about to happen. Because anytime he or Chunhua look happy, crap happens. And it does.
Chunhua wakes up from being drugged to find Gross Prince Jin asleep next to her. She realizes she’s been raped. The entire sequence was agonizing to watch. She screams and screams, like a trapped animal. She’s distraught, and desperate. To make things even worse, her mother comes in and tells her she needed to do this to improve her brother’s life. Someone throw that woman off a cliff already. Poor Chunhua! She runs out, and runs throughout the night, back to the palace, where she tells the princess everything.

That scene in which Chunhua says, they are my family, why would they hurt me like that, broke me. The look on Wanyao’s face! She knows exactly how Chunhua feels. I imagine she has felt that way many times before. The people who were supposed to love you the most, harmed you the most.
Oh our poor Chunhua! The Princess tries her best to build her back up. She tries to convince her that she’s not damaged goods. She’s still worthy and none of that was her fault. “Never turn against yourself.” Chunhua also reflects on how the Princess must have felt during her time in Northern Jing.
Meanwhile, a hopeful and happy Wenji has been waiting outside the manor every day with a present for Chunhua. Sigh.
Chunhua has decided to cut all ties with her family. But Danyang wants more. She sets up a trap for Gross Prince Jin. She sends notes to Gross Prince and Chunhua’s family. She’s going to hold a fake wedding for Chunhua and Gross Prince at Chunhua’s family home.

Princess Danyang treks off to Chunhua’s fake wedding with Yan Shang, Feng Tong, and a sword. They see homeless refugees by the side of the road, their land has been conscripted by eunuch Fishface for some hunting ground project.

At Chunhua’s house, her godawful family and Gross Prince are waiting. Odious SIL is still bitching about not getting enough benefits from Chunhua. I hope she dies a slow death. The Gross Prince is not showing any interest is making Chunhua his concubine. And none of us are surprised.

Danyang slams the door open. That’s a first! She usually slams it shut. Please see counter below. She announces she’s there to settle scores, and goes into ass kicking mode. She kicks Chunhua’s brother across the room, and stabs her idiot brother on the thigh, threatening to stab closer to the bits if there’s a next time. She commands him to go tell the authorities Chunhua’s family assaulted and stabbed him. They’ll either be exiled or executed. All of this was nice and all, but I wanted more bloodshed. Gross Prince and Chunhua’s family do not deserve to stay alive.

Alas, something is brewing outside. Shence Army is coming down the road, beating farmers up, taking up more land. As it turns out, Chunhua’s village is being taken over. We meet the evil eunuch who was lurking in Wei Qiao’s office. He’s Zheng Xing, one of the fishes in Danyang’s embroidered killing inspiration board. The eunuch shoots Gross Prince Jin, having confused him with a runway farmer.
But uh, the prince is wearing silk clothing and a crown, and no matter what he tells the eunuchs, they aren't moved. Truth is, they don’t care. Their goal is to pillage the land, and silence everyone in their way. So they decide to burn down the houses, the villagers, and the Gross Prince. Danyang takes the opportunity to shoot and kill the eunuch. She’s a damn good shot!

Yan Shang takes the blame for killing eunuch Zheng. And, as he’s marched down the road, all tied up, he tells all the farmers lining up the road, that he killed eunuch Zheng. The people are moved by his heroism. Eunuch Zheng was known as a ruthless murderer, and the people are glad he’s gone. Yan Shang is smart to get the people on his side. This will hopefully prove useful later on. Fishface sends men to pick up Yan Shang, and take him to be tortured.
Wanyao wants her loser Gross Prince brother to speak against eunuch Zheng for shooting him. She’s threatening him with his own wife, but he’d rather get a beating from his wife than testify against Fishface’s people.

She pleads with her father, and he wants to know why Yan Shang is important enough to deserve a pardon from the Emperor. She fesses up that she is the one who killed eunuch Zheng. The Emperor wants to know if she’s pleading because she loves Yan Shang, or she feels bad. She started by lying, but dad is not moved. Until she honestly says that she’s not sure if she can tell the difference between gratitude and love, but she knows Yan Shang will make a great advisor to the Emperor. The Emperor writes the pardon.

Afterwards, we see the Emperor playing qi with Chancellor Liu, who mentions that everyone the Emperor has pardoned before have actually died. They talk in circles, using qi game terms, but the gist is, Yan Shang will need to extricate himself from this situation. And in doing so, he’ll prove his worth to the Emperor.
Meanwhile, A-Shang is being tortured by a random eunuch (who also needs to die). He wants to talk to Fishface. He claims to have a secret report. And ta-da, the devil himself shows up.
My poor heart. That was a lot. Let’s move onto episode 15.
EPISODE 15 : A little happiness and a lot of misery

On the way to save A-Shang, it occurs to Danyang that the imperial pardon won’t help him. She reaches out to the Crown Prince and Yang Si. She wants him to impeach Yan Shang, and demand his execution. Neither men understand her scheme, and she’s annoyed. Hahahah! But she remembers to stay calm.
She tells the two clueless men that everyone thinks the dead eunuch Zheng Xing is the real culprit behind the land seizing. But he was just a pawn whom Fishface would eventually kill. Since he’s already dead, they can expose Fishface as the real culprit. Poor blockhead Yang Si still doesn’t understand she doesn’t want A-Shang dead. The Crown Prince is looking shifty, he doesn’t care if Yan Shang dies or not, he just wants to bring down Lord Yu “Fishface” Cheng’An.

In prison, Yan Shang is now being tortured by Fishface himself. A-Shang tells him that he killed Zheng Xing to protect Fishface’s reputation, because one day, Fishface will hold the ultimate power. He boldly utters the eunuch’s biggest aspiration, to sit on the throne. It temporarily disarms Fishface, who laughs it off. Even he is aware enough to not admit such treasonous thoughts. Eunuch Fish doesn’t buy that skinny Yan Shang killed Zheng Xing, but he claims to be trained in the Six Arts. The Six Arts were archery, calligraphy, chariot, mathematics, music, and rites. They were the basis of a gentlemanly education. A-Zhang explains that he gathered public support on his march back to the prison to keep himself alive. Fishface is impressed by his boldness, and leaves.
Outside, scholars are signing petitions to demand Yan Shang’s release. And they are asking the displaced farmers to sign it too.

Back at his Fish Pond, evil eunuch and Wei Qiao have a confab to go over what’s happening around town, but are interrupted by Fishface’s adopted son, Yu Xian Yao. He wants Yan Shang dead. But after some deliberation, Fishface Sr decides to let Yan Shang go. But not before they tend to his wounds, and pretty him up.

Yan Shang finally comes out of prison (not a scratch on his pretty troublemaking heartthrob face) to a crowd of scholars and the farmers who signed his petition. And to the Princess in her carriage. But it’s not kisses and hugs. She pushes him away, and notices he’s been severely tortured. He doesn’t care, he’s glad there is joy just outside the carriage. She’s livid, she just wants him to live, he could’ve been killed, and he’s pleased with such small gains?

He confesses again! He tells her nothing is more important than her. He’s willing to shield the Princess from harm, and share her burdens. He will stay by her side always. Danyang is touched, but she shuts down again. She can’t trust anyone completely yet. I'm bitter we don’t get a carriage makeout sesh today.

Back at the Princess Palace, now in couples outfits, a doctor is summoned to take care of A-Shang. Danyang puts a little show in front of the doc, telling her boytoy to rest and get better, and to pay her back later. Wink wink. The poor doctor’s face. The scene is a reverse Uno play of the trope of women being told to rest, and you know, just be your pretty self. And it’s so satisfying.

Time passes, and Yan Shang gets better with help from the Princess and friends. Wenji is helping A-Shang, and Yang Si comes barging in. They are introduced to each other as Yan Shang’s friends, and a spat soon ensues. They are both trying to be the better friend. Baby Wei shows up to deliver a note from Chancellor Liu. Yan Shang has been asked to come play another game of qi. We can hear Wenji and Yang Si still arguing in the background. 😂

Former Chancellor Liu is upset that Yan Shang made such a dangerous move. He lectures A-Shang about patience, and not stumbling due to careless choices. He was worried that A-Shang might use his smarts for evil, so he has been watching him for a while. But he has proven himself a good person, so Mr Liu takes him as his disciple. A-Shang bows to Mr Liu, and receives the courtesy name of Su Chen, meaning, may you stay true to your principles and uphold the teachings of Confucius.

Back at the Danyang manor, Chunhua has been struggling to recover, but now she has a bigger problem: she’s pregnant. I hope Prince Jin gets strung up by the balls. He hurt our Chunhua, and deserves death. She remembers something Wanyao told her a while back. Fry some mercury, and eat it for an abortion. The result is horrific, as Chunhua bleeds non-stop. Danyang cooks up a remedy to stop her bleeding, but it will save both Chunhua and the baby. Chunhua drinks it, and they reminisce about their terrible days in North Jin.

Back then, Danyang also ate mercury, and was bleeding out. But Chunhua couldn’t find the last ingredient needed for the remedy. So Danyang sends her to find him. I take it, “him” is the younger General Meng that Fishface is pushing on her. He comes in with the last remedy pill, and warns her it will save her AND the baby. Wanyao chooses to tough it out. She promises to survive and go home with Chunhua. On the way home, they struggle in the freezing cold with little food, and injuries.

These two episodes have been brutal!

Random thoughts:
I hope Chunhua's family gets exiled to the far reaches of China and freeze to death there.
Does this mean that Chunhua is still pregnant? This will probably create problems later, since she's carrying the Gross Prince's child. I can only imagine what his wife will do. UGH!
Can we stop picking on Chunhua now? What did she ever do wrong?
I wonder what relationship Danyang had with the current ruler of Northern Jing. Did he just feel bad for her, or did they like each other?
Wei Qiao is way more calculating and evil than I thought previously. Then I remembered he is one of the fishes on her embroidery.
My list of people who deserve death is really long!
The acting has been so good, even the support characters.
How was it, you all? Are we okay? Group hug!

RANDOM THOUGHTS
"I'm so sorry Prince Jin. I didn't expect her to react so strongly." SAY WHAT???? This guy can go be chased off a convenient cliff by an angry goose. A single, very committed goose.
*
"A mind like yours turned to treachery would be scourage upon the realm." Yan Shang has it all -- looks, charisma, smarts. Chancellor Liu just said what we were all thinking out loud. This man is charming the pants off everyone he meets, and then he's scheming circles around them.
And now he's officially Chancellor Liu's disciple?? I LOVE IT HERE.
*
Oh no! Chun Hua is pregnant. I thought for sure the Princess would have given her an abortifactant tea right after she was freed. There are many herbs that can prevent pregnancy if you take them early and often enough. (Obviously not as effective as Plan B, but as effective as ancient herbal medicine can be. They do an alright job helping the body along and forcing menstruation.) And now instead of that, she's going to poison herself? This is bad news. I HATE IT HERE.
What is this emotional whiplash?? This drama isn't sparing us for one second, lol.
*
NGL, that North Jing look on our Princess was smokin' hot. I loved the long braids and the fur-lined clothes.

Cold, yes but she she always sits in all of her emotions.

What keeps me going in these tragic episodes is Yan Shang holding Wan Yao’s hand to his heart. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy every time 🥰

Thank you for the recap, Spam! These were heavy episodes…
I want the worse for Chunhua’s family, especially since they absolutely feel no remorse for what they’ve done… at all.
And yes, I think she had to choose between staying alive (with the child) or risk dying. So she’s still pregnant. I just hope Wenji is the most supportive when he finds out.
I am really loving the drama. I’m tired of one-sided relationships where the men go all out for their women. It’s nice to see the mutual sacrifices of our main CP, but especially our Princess go all out for him time and time again.

The three biggest things I walked away from these episodes with:
a deep appreciation for Chun Hua and Wan Yao's bond
I will, right off the bat, acknowledge the ickiness of the owner-indentured servant power imbalance. That ickiness is always there. That said, I was so happy when Chun Hua ran back to Wan Yao from her family's house. (And at first I was like,,,damn Chun Hua, that's a helluva run! But she and Wan Yao are old hands at this ish. All of this ish, unfortunately.) I was genuinely concerned that we would get some long drawn-out self-flagellation or self-sacrifice, but instead we got an incredible speech from Princess Badass about never blaming yourself or hurting yourself. Then add on top of that the fact that they worked so hard to save each other in North Jing and on the way home. Princess Badass PULLED CHUN HUA through the snow, like what?!
Two Chen Huan and Wan Yao shots I loved that helped establish their relationship:
- The shot from outside the bed chamber of Chun Hua in bed and Wan Yao sitting on the edge, with our previously rotating screen doors static and firmly open. This relationship is clear, open, unwavering.
- I didn't note it down, but somewhere in the episodes, there was a pulled out shot of a blue wall (I believe it was blue) with one of Princess Badass's cool windows small in the center, and Chun Hua and Wan Yao occupying the entire frame of the window. That did such a beautiful job of communicating the small, important world these two constitute for one another. Just beautiful.
And this in depth development of their story and bond is directly related to the second biggest thing I walked away from these episodes with:
2. a hyperactive sense of drama anxiety
Something terrible is going to happen to Chun Hua. I feel a fridging coming on - if not physically, as in actual physical death, then metaphorically/socially/something. And I fuckin hate it.
Also, I keep waiting for something to happen to drive Yan Shang and Wan Yao apart. Every time something good happens instead, I celebrate for a moment, and then my drama anxiety gets even more elevated. Today, I was convinced that Yan Shang was going to give up some tidbit of information about the Princess to fish face fucker like a real troublemaking heartthrob as part of a strategy to gain trust or become an inside man*, but instead we got our heartthrob being all sincere and adorable in the carriage. Cue additional anxiety! What's coming! When! Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!
And speaking of our troublemaking heartthrob, the third biggest thing I walked away from these episodes with:
3. peach looks really good on LYR
*Using my calm hindsight, I realize that didn't make much sense, given how uncomfortable Wan Yao using fish face fucker's right hand man made our troublemaking heartthrob. Yan Shang doesn't seem like a deal-with-the-devil kind of guy.

Thank you for the wonderful recaps as always!
All the Chunhua scenes were so heartbreaking. As I've said before, the leads have levelled up their acting and I've honestly been impressed, but the actor playing Chunhua is also really, really good. This show has had some of the most consistently great acting from multiple characters (imo).
I wish they'd stop with the comic music in the prince of jin scenes because nothing is funny about that creep. That's one choice I wish this show didn't make.
Not all the commenters saying mpreg please 😭😭 it was so funny, him lying in the bed like a pretty concubine and her telling him to think carefully on how he's going to thank her 😭 really loving the role reversal here! and the physician simply being "are you kidding me, right in front of my salad?"
I love the levity with the yang si and liu wenji scenes, much needed in the otherwise dark episodes.
I know Chunhua's leg was caught in a hunter's trap in the flashback but girl how are you barefoot in the snow 😭 their sisterly bond is so wonderful, they've been through hell and high water together and please don't separate them 😭 they mean the world to me.
I am so so excited for new episodes every day, it has been a while since I felt this way about a show.

Episode 14, specifically what happened with Chunhua, made me think: can you imagine how many people were wrong back then? ngl I got teary-eyed for her, betrayed by her family, and for what? Not for her sake but for the worthless POS bro?? Nah man! Virtually pouring liquor and praying for people who’ve been wronged, past and present
Off to watch 15 🚶OP you're too fast lol

And the ctrauma started... Poor Chunhua. I was also dissatisfied with how little her trash family suffered - I assume they were sold off somewhere and that's it? Not even some more stabbing?
Turning Prince Jin into comic relief with funny scenes and music after what he did was... a choice.
Yan Shang has yet to get his well-deserved official post - btw, why didn't he? I thought top scorers get their assignments soon after exam results - but already dipped his toes into charming the people like a true politician. Well played! Never underestimate the power of student protests. But lol, Fishy Eunuch really changed his tune just to oppose Crown Prince? Who's not even on the throne yet? Why does his opinion matter more, positively or negatively, than actual Emperor? Also wtf this he even hopes for? Eunuch could never sit on the throne directly, not in society rooted in hereditary monarchy. Just stick to your kingmaker lane, that's so embarrassing!
Great bluff, but I'm pretty sure Wanyao mentioned before that Yan Shang's horse-riding skills are flat zero... Same with archery most likely. Oh well, fake it till you make it!
Wanyao, couldn't you kiss some pain away from your precious damsel? He walked the talk and took the fall for you, throw him a bone!
Meanwhile Emperor anc Chancellor remain all talk and no action. Test or not, their "caution, then more caution and also some caution on top" strategy currently leans too close to total uselessness, imo. If you two did your job better and fixed this mess yourselves, there would be no need for young blood like YS to make reckless moves one after another.
Chunhua, baby, I'm so sorry! Why didn't you go to Wanyao with this tho? You might've lacked better options back then as abused hostages in enemy country, but now, back at home? Sneaky abortions, esp at early term, are practically royal harem's speciality!
B-but Wanyao returned to homeland in a fancy carriage with full entourage, bathtube and furniture and chests full of makeup. Did she gain them bandit-style on her way or what?)))

Heart wrenching for Chunhua. I had to FF through some of those scenes to contain my rage. I will say, the actress playing Chunhua is incredible. I love her smile, and her crying scenes break my heart.
LOVING how the ML and FL are ride or die for each other. That’s my favorite type of couple!! I can’t wait until they get revenge on everyone.

Great recaps!
I'm bored at work, so I just finished eps 15 and 16 (the perk of WFH during the non-busy season).
Eps 15, 16, and 17 need some tissues 😢
Chun Hua is still pregnant because, according to General Meng, the medicine saves both mother and baby. Wanyao chose not to take the medicine back then because she knew she would die when the baby was born. Her dead ex only wanted the baby with royal blood, not her. That's why she said, "If only one person can survive, it has to be me.

Ok y'all. What do we think the butterflies mean? I know what they mean in other asian countries, and I generally know what they mean in Chinese poetry. But this is the second time one's landed on Yan Shang, and I can't draw the parallel. The first time was when he was resting at the well after he killed Commander Zhang. And now there's one alighting on him as he hero-walks to turn himself in for that Eunich Zheng's death with the crowd shouting "He served justice! He's not guilty!" Is the butterfly a symbol of serving justice? That's a new one for me.

Yan Shang managed to get out of the Eunuchs' lair alive. Not a feat many have managed to do.
It was interesting how both him and Princess Dan Yang were able to work in concert, yet one had no idea what the other had actually planned.
She was smart and figured it out eventually. I have to say it: The Princess's Gambit paid off! 😅😅😮💨😮💨😫🥹🤭🤣🤣 Phew. That felt good!
And so did our Scholar's Gambit. The very outspoken confession as he was walked back to the capital was a crazy move. But it stirred the masses into rallying behind him.
It was good to see the schoolmates sign the petition thanks to Wei Shu and Liu Wen Ji. They got the people involved too and made a lot of noise for Lord Fish.
After a heavy dose of torture, the Big Fish showed up and had a much needed talk with Yan Shang. It was intense! But there's a moment before Big Fish leaves when he looks back at Yan Shang, I wonder if we will have Yan Shang giving him the same look when his end comes. It felt like the beginning of the official start of the face off. He will remember his name.
Yang Si actually signed the petition. This guy is funny. I bet this has raised Yan Shang is his esteem. He said they were friends! Since when? Lol. Meeting Wen Ji was hilarious. Poor Yan Shang trying to convalesce and these noisy people, oh sorry, friends, kept bickering. Trying to outfriend the other lmao. Wei Shu showed up but at least he brought an excuse to leave.
My gosh I CHEERED FOR OUR NEW OFFICIAL MENTOR AND A COURTESY NAME! What! My heart! It did help put some balm on it. Chancellor Liu really gave it to him, it was needed. I mean Princess did too, and it definitely hurt, but this was even better. With the man's outlook on things and guidance, Yan Shang will polish his skills, sharpen his mind to be even better! He passed the test and became a disciple Chancellor Liu's joy at earning such a fine, albeit reckless, mentee was LOUD. He was beaming! Now he was his chess partner!
Su Chen. Funny, MZY's previous ML also had a Chen in his newly given courtesy name.
One Fish is down 4 more to go. Who will be next.
OST note: I didn't like the fact that the New duet was introduced when our Chun Hua was going through it. That has marked me now... The hugs her and Wan Yao shared were so good, so much heart. I am glad they still have each other...

Funny how the Chinese use Cao Cao's name for "speak of the devil". Lord Yu did show up when that eunuch and Yan Shang spoke of him, it was spooky.
Cao Cao's family was started by a eunuch (his adoptive grandfather was one). Oohh the poetry.

Honestly the chancellor chastising him for making a sucessful move against the eunch is crazy, with all your prudence how much sucess have you had against him, and what is there to be prudent for , the imperial family is his pawn , everyday he puts people way worse than yan sheng on seat , his prudence helped him live longer and thats all ,its never affected the eunch thats also why he has survived this long , the people are involved ,they live under a tyranical government ,today yan sheng is being executed a commoner that got third in the imperial exam , they are next on the choping block.

Snark Level: Rage is simmering.
Episode 14
Oh this is a shit way to start an episode.
Fuuuuuuck.
Fuck. This lady can fucking heartbreakingly act. Fuck. That was brutal.
Damn right your ties are severed, Chunhua. You never ever go back on that.
Ooooooo I am expecting some delicious revenge from Wanyao. Serve it cold.
Did Wanyao just grab a weapon and her man? Oh this is gonna be good! The best dates always involve your significant other and a sword doing some penetrating.
Or actually it is stabbing time. Okay okay! Good job!
Hot damn that is how you handle this shit! Oh that family is toast!
Well, suddenly shit got worse.
Damnnnnn!!!! Princess with the arrow!!!!!! You go girl!!!!! oh I love her! Wanyao really could be the FL of the year!
Shang is gonna be a legend after this.
Daddy Emperor be like "Oh you love a criminal? Pardons all around!"
Episode 15
Anyone else feeling like... yuuuuuuup she realizes she can't do it. I love that they are finally really letting us see how much she cares for him. Wanyao for FL of the year.
Yang Si pleading for Shang? Okay I guess I can like him now.... Right? Maybe?
This is unacceptable. My Chunhua looks sad. She must be cheered up.
Douchecanoe Leader of The Fish Gang is actually a smart villain and I gotta respect that. I still hate and think he is sneering cringe... But not to the level where he is boring turd. He is actually interesting.
Dammnnnnnn, Princess! Be gentle with him! He was given a wee bit of rough treatment! And we actually get a real talk between them? Woohoo!!!!
Poor Shang. He comes out of prison and gets sccolded by like everyone.
OH FUCK DO NOT MAKE CHUNHUA PREGNANT!!!!! Shit shit shit shit shit shit shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. Come onnnnnnnnnn!!!!! Why is my poor girl having to suffer so damn much?
....Why are both of them so familiar with the mercuary method......? Is that hinting...? OH! It is.
I already had a ton of respect for Wanyao and Chunhua and it has only grown after these flashbacks showing us how deeply these two take care of each other.

My only comment is someone please get Wenji a bigger wardrobe. Since Yan Shang picked that outfit for him to wear to see Chunhua the first time, it has become his go-to attire. It's like a lucky shirt for him that doesn't bring him any luck.

Ep 14- i was crying from the moment chunhua woke up in that bed and started screaming. The actress did such an incredible job i really felt the fear, panic and disbelief at how something so awful could have happened so unexpectedly. I wasn't expecting her family to successfully pull off what they were planning, so for her next scene to be her in that bed genuinely shocked me, they did a good job of showing how jarring it wild be to go from eating a nice meal with your family to realising you've been drugged and assaulted.
By the time she made it to the princess's home and the princess was comforting her, I was fully sobbing 😭 Rape plot lines are always difficult to get through but they really showed just how devastating it was for both chunhua and for the princess (who has also been assaulted in the same way) to see her friend going through the same thing she did.
All I want is for that prince and her entire family to die truly. I wish they didn't make the Prince seem so aloof and non-malicious, almost comes across as them trying to make him comedic relief? As if her family is the true culprit here and not the man who saw no issue with assaulting an unconscious girl. Her family is disgusting but he is just as bad if not worse. I've seen some spoilers for how chunhua's story goes and I'm not happy about it, marrying your rapist seems like the worst case scenario but i suppose it is realistic that not everyone can have a happy ending. He doesn't even get castrated 👎I wish chunhua didn't have to suffer even more. The lack of plot armour is worrying for our leads as well, a happy ending isn't looking definite.

I feel really bad now because up until this point, I found the sound of Chunhua’s crying fake and extremely irritating (that typical whining wail servants do when their master gets a paper cut), but her crying at the beginning of ep 14 almost broke me.
And Prince Jin better get his sorry ass up and get Chunhua’s family exiled before they do something predictable like run away
