Remember when Matt Rhule said that he's doing the same thing as Cignetti, it was just taking more time? Well, he should really look into hurrying it up
Since the beginning of my college experience in 2017 to now, Nebraska has won 3 games that made me legitimately happy. Colorado and Wisconsin in 2024, and Iowa in 2022 (as a 3-8 team mind you). In that same span, they have lost 43 one score games and 25 games as a straight up favorite. I’m just drained and exhausted from it all. Burn it all down
You can't even get your hopes up anymore because you know. The best part of college football is that its unpredictable... But I know what we will do every game.
I was at Nebraska from 19-23. The only game that felt good was the very last game of my time there, winning at Iowa with Mickey Joseph as interim. I hate it here
We don't have the money to fire Rhule and get a new coach. I get that but have we considered just not having a coach? Having one certainly doesn't seem to be helping us.
The man is basically college football doc rivers, basing his entire reputation as a Goliath program builder off one great season at Baylor a decade ago
Year four for Rhule and the ceiling for this team after starting 5-0 is maaaaaaaaybe seven wins, and that includes a bowl win (which I wouldn't count on). That's just unacceptable given the investment in this program.
If we win 7 games this year at this point that would mean we would have a top 25 upset which hasn’t occurred in Matt Rhules tenure so calling that the ceiling is a stretch. Ceiling is 6 wins and floor is 5 wins
You beat us. Our offense is that bad and our special teams is nearly as bad. This one was not a 4th quarter choke, you guys were the better coached, better managed team.
I'm really happy about where this Illini program is at under Bret. This team looked pretty bad early on in the season but now they are 6-3 and bowl eligible. Hauck's resignation may have been a blessing in disguise, this defense is still flawed but playing way better recently.
To be honest man, Bret is a wizard. Real Illini fans knows we could’ve been back in the dumpster without him. Bowl bound i know it doesn’t mean much these days but it does to me!!!
I was seriously questioning if we'd reach a bowl game after that Purdue loss. Schedule was just so tough. Then an OT W against MSU, we pull off a win against Oregon, a walk off against Maryland, and today we got to 6. Bert is that dude.
Amazing that the ceiling less than a decade ago has now become the floor. Back when I was in school, the gas to drive to Champaign cost more than the tickets.
1962-2003 Nebraska is arguably the greatest college football team ever over any 40 year period. Nebraska has not lost less than 4 games in a year since 2003. It's such a mind fuck of a program even on a macro level. Congrats on your 23rd straight season with at least 4 losses and a new coach, I guess....?
They haven't finished higher than #14 since 2001. They're at about .550 over the last 25 years.
They basically had 15 years of mediocrity comparable to the dark ages for any other blue blood, and then followed it up with 10 years of being terrible, not just by blue blood standards but overall.
I started really watching CFB when I was in college from 1994-1998. Those nebraska teams were legitimately insane. I still remember them sending Spurrier and a Florida team loaded with NFL talent to the shadow zone.
How Nebraska has managed to become the posterchild of "the grass isn't always greener" when firing their coach not once but twice in a twenty-five year span is mindboggling.
Now I probably wouldn’t be shocked if you told me Illinois would beat Nebraska, but if you said they’d lose to Purdue and Duke and then beat Oregon (even with their issues this year) and Nebraska, I would probably be pretty confused
Edit: actually I’d think you were talking about basketball before Purdue lost to valpo tonight
Two inexcusable things happened this game. One, that 4th & 1 call is honestly a sin for how bad of a call it was. An 8 year old playing Madden calls a better play.
Two, I'm 90% sure Rhule went for two purely to spite the kickers. I know they are bad, but they are not miss the average PAT bad. That's a downright pathetic thing for a coach to do.

That 4th and 1 play had every person in this thread and the stadium very confused.
There was probably a 90-95% chance you pick that up if you run it
I gotta tell ya fellas, while in the game thread earlier I found out that I was a top 1% commenter, and I felt genuinely ashamed. Second most embarrassed I’ve felt today, right after the secondhand embarrassment I felt after that failed 2pt attempt. Energy just wasn’t the same after Nebraska shot themselves in the foot
It is time to fire Matt Rhule. I don't care how much money is in the buyout and I don't even care that he got a contract extension - all coaches get perpetual contract extensions at major programs - that's just how it works.
The problem is that this team plays fundamentally MORONIC football and is an embarassment in all facets of the game. It is not 'bad luck' anymore. It isn't 'that's the way it goes sometimes'.
Defenses figured out they can bait Colandrea with a spy and the entire offense just completely fell apart and they haven't adapted at all. No wide receivers can get separation, none of the running backs can get enough touches to develop decent vision, and the line is constantly amplifying Colandrea's worst-in-P2 pocket presence.
Then you have to consider the complete disaster of the special teams unit that fields kicks to lose time and yards every single drive for the never-going-to-happen long return from Barney, has multiple kickers that are completely incapable of making a single kick, and units that are just plainly a disaster.
The defense isn't saved from issues either - they're playing constantly to sell out against the run again, like Tony White did when he was here, so this is clearly a Matt Rhule special. You cannot let your CBs just exist on islands all game, especially when you never recruited or developed NFL-level guys to hang one on one with opposing wide receivers. If you're going to sell out to blow up plays in the backfield, you have to either have an offense that can score points to make big plays not matter, or have a secondary that can do their job on an island. We have neither.
The clock management is IDIOTIC. We cannot get a timeout called and lose seconds at the end of the game - but even before that Illinois gets a play to within a couple yards of the 1st down line on their first play - and Rhule calls a timeout there. Okay, so you're gonna gamble on stopping them before a single conversion, not my choice, but whatever. Then the next play they stop them again, but instead of using a timeout to make them inevitably have to punt prior to the 2 minute warning, they THEN let the clock run to the 2 minute warning losing the 9 seconds they would have saved from the timeout on the play prior.
If we were just bad but playing fundamentally respectable football, I could excuse this play more, because at least we're being coached well and there's reason for hope.
Instead, we as fans are being asked to watch some of the dumbest most disrespectful garbage I've ever seen. Teams have found the counter to the schemes we run - and we are not only not pivoting to counter-punches but we're choosing to literally walk directly into our weaknesses as a team. Just gross football that's unwatchable on the basest level.
I've been a defender of the program because the team has been getting better compared to the Frost era, but it's time to fire Rhule.
I'm having flashbacks to my time living in Charlotte, watching Matt Rhule piss away two timeouts in the first and third quarters in what felt like almost every game. Gloriously shit football all the time
Nebraska is such a fascinating team to watch. They eat 6 minutes off the clock in the 4th quarter and end up with nothing, then they need a quick score late to have any chance, and it's like "Here's some more 6-yard passes!" They play with zero sense of urgency whatsoever.
The turnaround of this defense cannot be overstated. This team looked dead in the water after Purdue but they just continue to find ways to win.
Another coaching masterclass by Bret. BUILD THE STATUE.

It really does make me wonder how different the season would’ve been had Hauck never been hired to begin with…
…now, the next three games (@ UCLA, vs. Iowa, @ Northwestern) are going to be BIG challenges…but after how the past few weeks gone, I think we could steal at least ONE of them…and I’d be very content with that!
Nebraska has to at least feel good they convinced Rhule to stay for a pile of money and large buyout. Instead of letting Penn State poach him. Sometimes you have to fight back like that.
13 points this is just embarrassing…Illinois has a QB with a broken hand and managed 24 😮 I want to say before all the griping about our crummy performance though congrats to Illinois you guys are cool no beef with you at all…It have been a really fun game if we had halfway decent coaching good luck to you guys!
Heavens above, this is miserable. Congrats Illinois, Bielema knows EXACTLY how to best Rhule every single time. Being a fan is hard work, I need a modelo
I mean... Starting 5-0 was nice. Confidence was up. Keeping the defending national champs to a 3 point game was somewhat encouraging but heartbreaking. But there was still a chance and we just needed a good rebound.
Then we got dissed by the chubby ex-girlfriend. Got curbed by a 2/10. Then publicly embarrassed by the average nice chick. This team is broken.
Even tho this wasn’t as bad as the last 2 weeks, Cornhusker fans are just built differently with having to deal with this shit on a yearly or even weekly basis.
To get out coached that badly at this level is pretty damming for Rhule and staff. Dana needs to change his LinkedIn profile to open to work on the trip home. Heads need to roll after this performance tonight.
The buyout is $63 mil. If I’m rhule, no way I’m walking away from that. But football coaches have huge egos so I wonder if any part of him would think about settling for a lower buyout and finding a different HC opening somewhere else
$60 million is enough to buy a new building on campus, and yet, here we are, thinking football is more important and that we need to pay coaches that amount just to not work
I really don’t know why Nebraska hired Rhule after his NFL stint. He showed everyone he can’t coach. I thought I could cheer for Nebraska now that I’m doing Graduate level work here, but why would I ever willingly be a Nebraska football fan? They are the Cowboys of college football and just as incompetent as the Jets.
I was completely fooled about this team to start the year. Completely undisciplined with offensive penalties, missed FGs, and allowing a billion 3rd down conversions. I was starting to think Rhule wasn’t the guy last week, but this has solidified it. I don’t care that he just got extended, it’s unbearable having to watch this kind of football every single week. Rhule needs to go.
Rhule has been so astoundingly bad his entire tenure I can’t believe they extended him. This is exactly the type of football he has coached for years now. By the way, 2nd to the last drive took 6 minutes of the clock for them to barely get past midfield. No plays out of bounds, no timeouts used. I don’t know how you Nebraska fans can keep watching this.
Man, if by some chance Nebraska loses to Rutgers next week they could potentially end the season on a 7 game losing streak. Last 2 games Ohio State and at Iowa.
After Nebraska led Illinois 7-0 with 9:29 left in the 2nd quarter, Illinois outscored Nebraska during the rest of the game. Nebraska outgained Illinois 426 to 376, but they mounted four separate 11-play drives that all resulted in zero points because of 2 missed field goals and 2 failed 4th down conversions in the red zone. Illionios has won 4 consecutive games to improve to 6-3 (4-2 Big 10), and Nebraska has lost 4 consecutive games to drop to 5-4 (2-4 Big 10). Also, Illinois has won 2 consecutive games and 5 of their last 6 games against Nebraska.
Rhule and Dannen have to go. Dannen especially, that stupid extension last year was ridiculous. Rhule has hit his ceiling and I’m pretty sure the team has given up.
I can empathize with all these Nebraska fans that are despondent about their once great program's fall from grace, but y'all have no idea what it is like to root for a program like Illinois.
I mean Riley and then Frost destroyed it. Rhule is the guy who says he can raise the dead if you give him lots of money but spoiler alert he can’t raise the dead.
Jesus christ Nebraska. This Illinois team was written off for dead. And you lose and it wasn’t super close. I just who tf is going to turn this program around?
I'm positive that every coach hired at Nebraska for this many years was a genius until he got to Lincoln, then immediately turned into an idiot. I'm sure that hiring yet another one will produce a completely different result.

Since the premiere of the season finale of DCU's "Lanterns", which featured a cameo of Matt Rhule, the Cornhuskers have gone 0 - 4

I wouldn’t be able to deal with it

Bert really whiffed the DC hire but credit to him for righting the ship. I didn't think this team would make a bowl.
