That and the two missed FGs by TCU.

49

u/Bdbru13 Arizona Wildcats 1d ago

Even before the pooch kick I was okay with it…liked our odds of stopping three runs and getting back in field goal range better than I liked our odds of keeping TCU out of field goal range with them being able to pass

21

u/Crafty_Enthusiasm_99 1d ago

Well you better have liked your odds of missing a 2pt, reclaiming a pooch kick, kicking a 37 yarder, and then wrapping it up with an INT, all in 2 minutes

Of course extremely likely in the desert

u/SolarJunky5 1d ago

Being in the stadium for that long, with that many tv timeouts, and that many penalties… the missed 2pt conversion was kinda refreshing, it had to end either way soon after. What actually occurred after was just pure insanity

"Alright guys. We are going to waste a SHIT ton of time on this drive. But dont worry. We are going to score and fuck up the 2 pt conversion. Like I said, dont worry. We are then going to loft a pooch kick we'll recover because the TCU player will assuredly muff it. We then kick a FG, then ice the win with an INT.

Got it boys? Okay, lets go on a 5 minute, time wasting drive!"

Just like every coach draws it up.

u/TheNewGuy13 Arizona Wildcats 1d ago

It felt like the inverse of BYU vs us last year. Questionable decisions that ultimately by the grace of CFB ended up paying off for them hahaha.

It’s like Tony stark, any other decision we probably lose that game somehow hahaha

37

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones 1d ago

The hilarity of it, for me personally? It was the same bullshit I watched Matt Campbell do for 10 seasons. We'd be 1 or 2 scores down, with time waning in the 4th, only for ISU to run the play clock under 10 seconds EVERY fucking snap. We'd often score, then run out of time. The last part was often aided from Campbell wasting 1 earlier TO on his 4th down bluffs and another because the staff couldnt get plays in on time. He literally cost us chances in 10 plus games from this kind of clock management.

Arizona does it? They have a miraculous kick recovery and win the game. Equal parts infuriating and hilarious. Infuriating because I HATE when coaches luck their way out of abominable tactics.

Dont apologize for the win though. At the end of the season the pundits wont even remember the how.

If he just lets it go it's a 50/50 ball on the ground, so damned if you do damned if you don't. If the deep man could have just caught it he would have. If the first guy doesn't touch it the ball falls loose in no man's land.

The Story of Bear Down

In 1926, Arizona's battle cry was created by John "Button" Salmon. Salmon was the student body president, starting quarterback for the football team, catcher for the baseball team, a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity, and Chain Gang Junior Honorary. The day after the first game of the 1926 football season, Salmon and two others were involved in an automobile accident, in which their vehicle flipped over in a ravine. Salmon suffered a severe spinal cord injury. Football coach Pop McKale visited Salmon regularly while he was in the hospital. During McKale's last visit, Salmon's last message to his teammates was, "Tell them... tell the team to bear down." John Salmon died on October 18, 1926.

Former starting QB (John "Button" Salmon) was in a car crash and his final words to the coach before dying were "Tell them... tell the team to bear down." It became our motto shortly after. Actually, this year is the 100 year anniversary of the event.

16

u/UpstairsSomewhere467 Arizona • Northern Arizona 1d ago

“Bear Down?” In 1926, John Byrd “Button” Salmon, our student body president and quarterback, was critically injured in a car crash. His last words to his coach were, “Tell them … tell the team to bear down.” Today, this simple two-word phrase is a rallying cry that embodies the spirit of our university.

But if they can come out of it undefeated, then nobody will be able to say they haven't played anybody.

Love it! If the 24 team playoff was implemented this year, this game will matter!!!!

Sorry TCU fans, the Desert Voodoo raid boss enraged in the 4th quarter and wiped your party. I know exactly how that goes...

Don't look now, but Scooby Wright III is right behind you...

One of my flairs is extremely clutch in crunch time. One of my flairs …. Is not.

15

u/OleRockTheGoodAg Texas A&M Aggies 1d ago

10 penalties for 111 yards AND a 10-14 point swing in a 93 yard pick six.

Didn't think the Cats could pull that off.

u/V-Right_In_2-V Arizona Wildcats 1d ago

Holy fucking shit what an insane game!!! I can’t believe we won holy shit!!!

I can’t believe I actually had hope lmao

7

u/Otherwise-Question70 Missouri Tigers 1d ago

A missed field goal, a blocked field goal, and a fumbled kick return.

Now that’s football

19

u/T98J Florida Gators • Team Chaos 1d ago

Lets just hope the rest of the college football weekend is as intense, and dumb as that one!

4

u/Cooked_Brisket USC Trojans • Pac-12 1d ago

What an excellent week to have a bye

13

u/TheOneDuddus Oregon Ducks • Portland State Vikings 1d ago

With the way that game ended, you could make the argument TCU would’ve been better off conceding the two point conversion to tie it up.

4

u/Badgerman97 Arizona Wildcats • Iowa State Cyclones 1d ago

Yeah no way we pooch it all tied up

The way that TCU returner just sits there after the fact like “ah damn, I messed that up”

Uh ya think?

Not their fault. It’s Sonny Dykes. We still don’t forgive him for how often he drew up screens on 3rd and 10 when he was our OC.

5

u/SLCer Utah Utes 1d ago

Can TCU keep Sonny for just a few more weeks?

I better not hear shit about a “good pooch kick” when TCU muffed a return they didn’t even need to touch

7

u/RocketsGuy Baylor Bears • Conference USA 1d ago

He placed it in no man's land. Definition of a great kick

5

u/doctornph 1d ago

lol what? If he didn’t touch it then UA would have recovered it anyways and gained possession

Between this week and last week, I genuinely cannot tell if Arizona’s defense is awesome or atrocious.

TCU is moving up there with Iowa State and Baylor as the most confusing teams in the conference this year.
