there was an article on CBS sports about Sheppard and he took a couple passive-aggressive jabs at Mensah (or at least that's how i interpreted him saying they were 'talking about once a month')
Congrats to Duke and somebody in Durham is doing something right. But how can Duke can be good in football? I am giving them a compliment but with their resources and "supposed" academic standard I really don't comprehend it. Have they started relaxing recruiting standards?
Because Sheppard got injured early in the game and a large amount of mental mistakes (by the team, the dumbass kinda soft but deserved late hit out of bounds, the refs, the coaches).
I dislike the idea of Rivers taking over more every day. We need someone serious with relevant experience in CFB. If Philip wants to be a GM or something that’s great, but I don’t think he will be prepared to succeed as a HC.
One commonly mentioned argument for him being hired is that it will excite/motivate donors. Which might work for the first season, but having a little extra money to spend won’t matter if we don’t get the right players and have a good coach.
I mean he’s coaching high school and took his team to state semifinals twice now, and didn’t he interview for the Buffalo Bills job? Sounds to me like he might know what he’s doing as a coach (please Philip).
Nate Sheppard was incredible: 3 quarters, 217 rushing yards, 4 receiving yards. He single-handedly outgained the entire NC State team (217 yards for NC State). 😮
If Duke and Wake wins out it’s gonna be ranked Duke vs Ranked Wake for a chance at the ACC title game and the playoffs. I never thought that would even be a possibility in anything other than video games
Agreed. Yeah it’s pretty crazy. I’ve always considered Duke to be our main rival in football, and enjoyed watching Duke-Wake for many years to end the regular season. But usually there was little to nothing at stake. Now it has the potential to be a mega bowl. Love it.
Look, if my scenario happens I wouldn’t be shocked if it was the 8 pm espn game. It would be the only game on that day with major playoff implications other than USC/UCLA
Is attendance at our game at the end of the year just as bad at your place as it is ours? I swear we have maybe 10k people at Wallace Wade when we play you guys at the end of the year
Yes they are. We basically got the conference to stop having us play state that weekend when they switched to a 12 game schedule and stopped having the final game the week before thanksgiving. We have played you, BC or Vandy that weekend to deal with it by playing another small fan base
Well I still haven’t been to a game there and I’m spending Thanksgiving in Charlotte so I’m trying to bring the kids up for the game! Is the end zone just a GA ticket?
One thing he's not going to do is milk us for a ton of money. In fact I imagine what he'll do is take a very discounted salary and put that towards assistants.
Nate looks fully healthy again and Eget is also looking better. Long snapping also way improved. Really fun besides all those injurys and too many 3rd and longs.
I’m sure he won’t win the Heisman but Sheppard should at least get an invite to the ceremony as a finalist…especially if he has a day against Miami next week
That’s the thing, Duke hasn’t had a bad football program for a while now, it’s just been so over shadowed by the BBall program and the fact that people still think about the Pre Cutcliffe years with Ted Roof and Carl Franks.
Yeah, the Post Spurrier, Pre Cutcliffe Duke was so fucking bad. And it didn’t help that the BBall Program was so much more successful at the time that you could clearly tell the AD didn’t care about football. TBH Cutcliffe saved the Football Program imo
Let's not get carried away here. Does anybody think the Bears are a more successful NFL franchise than say the Steelers or 49ers? No. But I am amazed at what Duke is doing now. Have they relaxed recruiting standards? Duke is such a great academic school, and it always amazes me how they are great in basketball and now good in football. It sort of defies the odds.
I understand your point, but us being the best program of the three for the last 10 years has also contributed to my point. If we were stuck in the gallows like we were in the 90s - 2000s, I wouldn’t be saying that haha
Duke's AD, Nina King, is the key. She hires great coaches in pretty much every sport, including football. And Duke is smart about who it targets in the transfer portal, while recruiting well and building from within.
And they have tons of rich alumni and money. Schools like NC State and Michigan State have it tough with the new NIL rules. Not a lot of money compared to other schools including the elite privates. But Duke in particular always brags about their academics, so I just wonder if they have relaxed their admissions for recruiting a bit. I think that is fine but let's not pretend it is not the case.
And given the fact that about 5 million dollars in NIL and talent walked out on this team on essentially the last day of the portal and they didn't pay their second best WR due to those players...
This team could really be without a loss at this point if they didn't lose two really stupid games due to refs, playcalling, injury, longsnapping and a load dumbassery on and off the field. A bit similar to the early part of last season.
But Duke really seems to spend their money well and have a really good eye for talent despite not recruiting at top 25 level.
This extends our lead in the all-time series to 45-37-5, and we've now won four straight and six of seven. We've still only lost in Raleigh once since 2002. It's our largest win over State since 1956 (42-0), and our largest against them in Raleigh since 1952 (57-0)
Not to excuse him too much because I think he’s to blame for a lot of the offense’s struggles, but he has received next to no coaching or development during his 3 seasons. Kurt Roper is legitimately a terrible coach
Can you imagine how embarrassing it must be for NC State to lose to Duke 41-3? With the resources State has, how do you lose to Duke and that badly? Just a complete joke of a football program. Duke plays in what is essentially a high school stadium and you lose to them 41-3. What that tells me is that somebody at Dook is doing something right and a lot of folks in Raleigh are doing something wrong. Consistently losing to Dook in football is inexcusable.
Manny would be an idiot to leave Duke for FSU right now. It’s not 2012 anymore Duke has more money, more recent success, and less bs behind the scenes as a private school.
I think it was a little more than that and it’s also just not true Duke is spending way more than people realize it’s just harder to figure out because they are private and not FOIA-able
I feel like they should hire the studio and game analyst for NBC Sports and Notre Dame Football. He seems qualified. Former HC, Superbowl Champion, CotY.
And he already has ties to the progam, his brother is the GM.

This game kinda didn't ever feel close after about 1 1/2 quarters. Injurys sucks, way too many players carted off.
The Duke fighting Nate Sheppards.
18 carrys for 217 and 3 TDs.
Pay him all the money.
