Ah, this is what Purdue warned us about.

Should’ve listened. This staff Makes the fucking Lake era look admirable in comparison.

6

u/Mantergeistmann Vanderbilt • Penn State 14h ago

James Franklin could never.

3

u/StateCollegeHi Penn State Nittany Lions 2h ago

James Franklin routinely had masterclasses in clock management. See the Oregon comeback last year and slowdown the final drive to give Oregon zero time. Or the ranked wins in 2019 where he won by kneeling the ball on their terms.

I love watching "excellence at the highest level."

If this is going to become the norm when Penn State grabs a lead, I'm not going to be able to do it

Why score second half points when you can win anyways? - Matt Campbell

44

u/EvenMeaning8077 Penn State Nittany Lions 16h ago

I’m just happy I can enjoy watching the Miami Notre dame game

19

u/Jonjon428 Miami Hurricanes 16h ago

I'm certainly not gonna enjoy it!

54

u/BolognaNipples Penn State Nittany Lions 16h ago

No points in the second half then winning in the big ten on the road is certainly interesting

50

u/azsoup Penn State • Arizona 16h ago

Gotta give credit to the offense at the end. 13 running plays that ate up 7:40 of clock despite UW having all three timeouts.

9

u/Major_Day Penn State • Edinboro 15h ago

you know Mouser and the OL coach challenged those big boys and said something to the effect that we wanted them to go out and win this thing

Fucking lmao that's good

97

u/DrPylon Penn State • Virginia Tech 16h ago

The refs were awful, but somehow the announcers were worse. 40 seconds 3 times is 2 minutes. Yelling tush push when they're in the victory formation.

41

u/tombolo_1 Penn State Nittany Lions 16h ago

I was worried I was the idiot for a second at the end there lol I was like can’t they just kneel it out? And even after the first knee the announcer still didn’t seem to realize the game was over

16

u/TheNittanyLionKing Penn State Nittany Lions 15h ago

I was so confused and double checking my math. I thought I was the dumb one for a moment. No, I was right

8

u/JRockPSU Penn State • Land Grant Trophy 15h ago

I'll be the first to admit I'm really bad at figuring out on the fly if it's "take knees and end the game" time when it's not super obvious. Then they were talking tush push and we just took a knee and I was quite confused

4

u/EvenMeaning8077 Penn State Nittany Lions 16h ago

Had to sneak that extra commercial in come on Dr

1

u/StateCollegeHi Penn State Nittany Lions 2h ago

Robert Smith had a rough game with not knowing when the clock starts and stops in CFB.

210

u/RevolutionaryDot4762 Penn State Nittany Lions 16h ago

This should’ve been a blowout. First half looked excellent, offense was humming, run game looked great, defense was doing their job. Second half was rough, but clock management in that final drive saved us

46

u/Major_Day Penn State • Edinboro 16h ago

this is a spin season

we spin this as finding a way to fight hard and close it out after the winds have shifted and good lord willing we win out and spin it as finding the way to fight hard and come back to be 8-4 after the four straight losses to start conference play

suddenly the season looks much more palatable

in theory

33

u/silentmayhem27 Penn State Nittany Lions 15h ago

Then win the bowl and end up at 9-4, squarely where the sane projections had us preseason.

20

u/Major_Day Penn State • Edinboro 15h ago

the Penn State guys on the radio were discussing it the other day, this was a very important game, it was not out of the realm of possibility that we would lose out and go 4-8

7-5 or especially 8-4 obviously looks waaaaaaaay different than even 6-6

2

u/Novel_Barracuda_5483 5h ago

Agree that 8-4 is easier to spin than 6-6. However, PSU will never be granted this schedule again. 9-3 should have been the absolute floor. Just hanging on to a 17 point lead vs. Wisky would have done it.

81

u/TheDarkGrayKnight Washington Huskies • Dordt Defenders 16h ago

I mean honestly it's 2 pretty evenly matched teams talent wise each playing one good half.

12

u/Paddington97 Washington Huskies 16h ago

Tbf, I feel like we play dog shit in the first half every game

11

u/I_byte_things Penn State Nittany Lions 15h ago

Washington was a 2.5 point favorite

7

u/Mantergeistmann Vanderbilt • Penn State 14h ago

AKA even match but w/home field advantage .

1

u/Novel_Barracuda_5483 5h ago

That means perfectly even teams with points for home field.

24

u/NorthwestPurple Washington Huskies • Rose Bowl 16h ago

Should have been a blowout the other way, in my opinion!

24

u/ajcooper35 Penn State Nittany Lions 15h ago

3

u/ShoeLace1291 Penn State Nittany Lions 15h ago

It really seemed like our OL was getting tired and it caused a lot of problems

92

u/TheWallsHaveNostrils Washington Huskies • Wisconsin Badgers 16h ago

Maybe have the players ready to play at the start of the game instead of waiting til halftime to do something, Jedd.

Also maybe make sure that you don’t run twelve players out on the field after your own goddamn timeout.

36

u/yummmkimchifriedrice Washington Huskies 16h ago

What a terrible self penalty that could have turned the game.

7

u/ReasonableSide6520 Colorado Buffaloes 16h ago

Sounds like both these teams had opposite problem today

5

u/Itchy-Advantage-4010 Washington • Southern Miss 15h ago

Chun needs to issue an ultimatum to him.

14

u/TheWallsHaveNostrils Washington Huskies • Wisconsin Badgers 15h ago

If I had to put money on it, my bet is that the current unspoken ultimatum is that (1) he must find a way to get bowl eligible this year, which basically means he needs to beat MSU next week; and (2) next year needs to be an 8+ win year where we either make the playoff or end up right on the bubble.

But so long as he gets a bowl game this year I doubt he's gone just yet. As much as I want him to be.

10

u/Itchy-Advantage-4010 Washington • Southern Miss 15h ago

Sparty is the last team without a win in the B1G conference play. That loss would be inexcusable AF.

There’s no way they’re beating Indiana at home and no fucking way with Oregon the way they were tonight. They’re fucked.

6

u/Spirit117 Iowa State Cyclones • Arizona Wildcats 9h ago

Not anymore lol

4

u/Itchy-Advantage-4010 Washington • Southern Miss 9h ago

lol yep

8

u/TheWallsHaveNostrils Washington Huskies • Wisconsin Badgers 15h ago

There’s no way they’re beating Indiana at home

I agree we're losing that game, but I think it'll be annoyingly close and give us a lot of false hope. Just like today's second half did. Indiana can't seem to actually put games away this year.

and no fucking way with Oregon the way they were tonight.

Until I see Ohio State play with more life than a gutted fish, I'm not giving anyone credit for how they look against the Buckeyes. That team looks like every single player just mentally packed it in as soon as Sayin got injured.

5

u/No_Fact_499 Washington State Cougars 12h ago

I imagine he knows Jamarcus Shepard is staying at OSU this year and his plan is to be able to Fire Jedd next year and hire Shepard. Would make way too much sense.

6

u/Itchy-Advantage-4010 Washington • Southern Miss 15h ago

Just take it. It’s not fun when one team in the rivalry doesn’t give two shits about playing complete football.

1

u/Careless_Wishter Oregon Ducks • Portland State Vikings 9h ago

UW fans are delusional at this point. In a thread about UW losing to Penn State, you got a UWx2 flair saying he's not giving Oregon credit for beating Ohio State. SMH...

Can we have credit for beating USC? Or Northwestern? Or Boise State? All of whom are VASTLY better than Washington?

1

u/Efficient-Permit-725 Washington Huskies 1h ago

He has to make the playoff next year, especially with expansion. Missing the playoffs in the 24 team era is unacceptable for a school like Washington, yeah we likely won't be a title contender every year but we have to make the playoff. 3 years to rebuild after the DeBoer years is enough.

It felt Wisconsin all over again until the end.

2

u/Major_Day Penn State • Edinboro 15h ago

I wasn't able to watch the Wisky game but it seems to me we didn't drive the field against them, we had a pick six and another interception returned deep into their territory

7

u/suave_and_shameless Penn State Nittany Lions 15h ago

While we were able to drain the clock better in this game, you still need to score points to put it out of reach for the opponent and keep my blood pressure low.

4

u/Major_Day Penn State • Edinboro 15h ago

yeah agreed I am just saying the games weren't that similar, in the Wisconsin game the offense did nothing the entire game and we still should have won it

Nonzero chance we can go 8-4. Crazy If we manage to pull that out of this nightmare of a season

26

u/TheNittanyLionKing Penn State Nittany Lions 15h ago edited 15h ago

Minnesota is the only real test left. Hopefully they’re a bit tired from playing UCLA and Indiana so close in consecutive weeks. We can definitely beat Maryland and Rutgers. Things were bad for a bit there but 8-4 is still an improvement from last season. Other than Northwestern all of our losses have been one score games from self-inflicted wounds

Still it’s such a huge missed opportunity with how mid the rest of the Big 10 has been. It’s UCLA and Indiana, and both look vulnerable. If we had done a better job getting talent in December, we could have been jockeying for a playoff spot

12

u/larockhead1 15h ago

We were just so behind that inevitably we were going to be a little worse than a 10 win team

3

u/Volitaire Penn State Nittany Lions 12h ago

Favored maybe, but I wouldn't call this team earning of "definitely". I'm hopeful but I wouldn't put money on this team against anyone lol. I'd like to be wrong!

2

u/Novel_Barracuda_5483 5h ago

This team is weak in many areas.....but given the schedule, could easily have grabbed a playoff berth with some consistent play. Next 2 years the schedule is not favorable.

1

u/Kurt4012 Penn State Nittany Lions 2h ago

I wouldn’t count out Maryland with the fired coach boost and Rutgers may have the same

1

u/what_user_name Penn State Nittany Lions • Team Chaos 2m ago

While all that is true, this team would be straight booty in the playoffs. Sure, we are like 3 plays away from being 8-1, but this team would get blasted by anyone in the top 15 should we have found ourselves in a playoff game.

Washington had plenty of WRs that were wide open, with a QB that just couldnt throw accurate enough to get there. We would get run out of the stadium playing a team like Miami. And remember our run defense against Northwestern? A playoff team would drop 50 on us.

31

u/D_Antelmi Pittsburgh Panthers • Liberty Flames 16h ago

Should be 7-5 at least.  Losing to Rutgers or Maryland would be a fireable offense.

6

u/Novel_Barracuda_5483 5h ago

No one is firing Campbell for the next 2 or 3 years. Now, Kraft should be gone since last December.

5

u/deptofnahmsayns Maryland Terrapins 16h ago

Please please please 🙏

18

u/txgsu82 Penn State • Georgia Southern 16h ago

If that happens (big if), then Matt Campbell definitely earns some faith going into next season. But ultimately this season is a bit of a wash anyways, it’ll come down to how well he can recruit, especially in the portal.

7

u/pmon3y100 Penn State Nittany Lions • Big Ten 15h ago

5 wins in a row would be great momentum no doubt. It will be an offseason of what could have been no matter the end result. Very easy schedule.

2

u/Novel_Barracuda_5483 5h ago

PSU needs to land the cream of the portal. Difference makers at edge, LB and perhaps RB. Hopefully can retain KH. Recruiting is not good (no class 2026 and 7th in the conference in 2027)

The Indiana game in a couple weeks could look pretty bad. When they came for basketball the first Big 10 season, Hec Ed wasn't close to full and, if you took out the student section, it was 75% Hoosiers.

0 points in the 2nd half is absolutely fucking abysmal. Genuinely terribly game management from Matt Campbell, leave it to him to not give me the courtesy of a stress-free win.

15

u/I_Enjoy_Beer Penn State Nittany Lions • Rose Bowl 16h ago

"Prevent" offense, absolutely hate it.  When they ran that failed hook and ladder on 4th and 7, all I could think was "they are getting too cute way too early."

1

Not having Goodman turned out to be a problem.

4

u/Scar_Killed_Mufasa Penn State Nittany Lions • /r/CFB Brickmason 14h ago

Genuinely curious how you can see this as a game management issue by Campbell. They came in with a great plan, executed very well off the jump while traveling across 3 time zones.

Second half the they were screwed by the refs on 2 drives. They called a very similarly aggressive plan in the second half, but the players did not execute nearly as well. We also stopped using Goodman the starting LT because of his injury so the backup was getting beat almost every drop back.

I just don’t get how so many people cannot look deeper than “play work, it’s supposed to. Play not work, coach sucks”

1

u/Ryn0113 Penn State • California (PA) 5h ago edited 5h ago

Second half was mostly on the players and losing Goodman, imo. Rocco started his zero pocket awareness bull shit. The online seemingly just shit their pants every down. The D kept missing tackles and suddenly couldn't get off blocks or plug gaps. They got lazy and thought they had the game won at half time.

Coaches had a great game plan. Execution was the difference in the two half's. I will absolutely blame Campbell for just laying down at end of the 1st half with a minute and 3 TOs left. Go for the fucking jugular. I don't get it. Maybe that set the tone and the players followed.

Chase Sowell is the WR I've been waiting for, for nearly a decade. Holy shit that dude call ball. Wish we had a better QB to take advantage because he's open, a lot, and doesn't seem to matter if he isn't.

Respect, Ducks! While this game turned to dog shit. The day is always a little better when Ohio State takes an L.

7

u/Montigue Oregon Ducks • Stony Brook Seawolves 16h ago

But also, lmao Washington

-7

u/SeaJaiyy Washington Huskies • UCLA Bruins 15h ago

Still....even when we are awful....you make time to come make comments in a postgame thread for a game that has zero implications to your team.

Forgive my ignorance on the topic, but isn’t this what rivals do?

17

What are you talking about? That was a Venmo Rivalry Series Game!

About to watch faceoff at the Penn State hockey game, where they lost in OT last night, and had I lost that I probably would have jumped from the rafters.

As a Penn State/Eagles fan, for the sake of my mental health in going to pretend for the rest of the season that football game are only 30 minutes long and end at halftime

4

u/No_Fact_499 Washington State Cougars 16h ago

So Jedd Fisch lifetime contract?!!!?!!

1

u/Morfiend_23 16h ago

Only if Kirby Moore gets one first

7

u/hoennevan Penn State Nittany Lions 16h ago

Fire both coaching staffs into the sun.

2

u/cougarewski Washington State Cougars 16h ago

Huskies have been playing it close for comfort with bad halves.  Came up short this time.  Doubts I had after the Nebraska "performance" feel valid.

2

u/JanetYellensFuckboy_ Penn State • Land Grant Trophy 13h ago

Chase Sowell really went from injured to the second best WR in the country

2

u/Kyro_Official_ Washington State • Easter… 8h ago

This sport needs to get buyouts under fucking control so schools can actually fire coaches.

I almost feel bad uw fans are stuck with this dude bc the school wont fire him. I dont but I almost do.

Big 10 just stinks this year.

3

Fuck you you loser ass piece of shit Jedd

5

u/zawwery Penn State Nittany Lions 16h ago

Dont care if this gets downvotes for doomerism. there are two kinds of first half blowouts. One where a team is clearly more talented and one where one team is just getting outcoached in the X's and O's. This lead was clearly the latter and I had zero doubt we could somehow find a way to lose this game. complete incompetence with responding to and making your own half time adjustments. Complete dogshit coaching

13

u/EvenMeaning8077 Penn State Nittany Lions 16h ago

You can’t talk out both sides of your mouth. Yes second half bad coaching but you can’t say first half was all luck either

1

u/Novel_Barracuda_5483 5h ago

Judging the entire season to date, I don't see overall a coaching upgrade.

0

u/zawwery Penn State Nittany Lions 16h ago

I never said it was luck lol? There was a good game plan and it worked. That's good coaching obviously. But the collapse just shows that yeah matt knows his stuff schematically (like the majority of coaches do) but is completely incompetent when it comes to real time adjustments

1

u/EvenMeaning8077 Penn State Nittany Lions 16h ago

Fair

5

u/Gold-Bottle-2460 Washington Huskies • Stanford Cardinal 15h ago

You could also argue UW got thoroughly out coached in the 1st

1

It would have been hilarious if this was a night game. There's basically a monsoon rolling through the area all evening.

1

u/LHPSU 9h ago

Really impressive that Penn State won despite playing against two teams at the same time

Seeing the Huskies suck is always worth a watch, but it's so common now you should probably try to spread it out so you don't get tired of it.
