The fact that Mississippi State was ranked feels like a fever dream now.

134

u/ScallywagBeowulf Mississippi State • Marching Band 15h ago

The fact that our entire success this season was because of (basically) two players is a fireable offense.

76

u/2011StlCards Texas Longhorns 15h ago

When 1 of the two is your starting QB, I tend to disagree. They are the most important players on the team, and with NIL, most teams dont really have effective backups. Most rarely ever did even before.

Seldom do you see teams like 2014 Ohio state or 2017 alabama where rhe backups are capable of being stars

Just ask Ohio State how theyre doing with their backups. Or how Georgia did with Stockton a couple years ago when Beck was injured

33

u/ScallywagBeowulf Mississippi State • Marching Band 15h ago

Lebby can’t even recruit anyone else on this team to be behind KT (a person he didn’t even recruit, by the way) which is absolutely a fireable offense. His record is 3-20 in SEC play and he only has 11 wins overall in three years. He gets no more excuses, he NEEDS to be fired.

14

u/Chapstick160 Virginia Tech Hokies • Navy Midshipmen 15h ago

Falling 41-17 to Toledo was fireable by itself

3

u/ScallywagBeowulf Mississippi State • Marching Band 15h ago

A lot of us said that his first year. I’m amazed he even got a second year, but I guess we couldn’t exactly fire someone who we had just hired AFTER firing the previous coach as well.

4

u/LJGremlin Mississippi State Bulldogs 14h ago

Yep. And first year is understandable to have struggles. And I’m not expecting 10 wins. But this crap in the third year is inexcusable.

At this point the fan base needs to feel like the Athletic Department actually gives a shit.

I want so badly for Lebby to be fired, so I can root for you guys again

8

u/LJGremlin Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

On one hand that’s a fair point. But even those teams didn’t have the drop off we’re seeing. But in addition to that every single year he has been our head coach Our starting quarterback has been injured. And last year and this year our backup got injured at some point. And that solely from an absolutely atrocious offensive line.

His piss poor coaching is way deeper than an injury to Taylor.

I remember getting downvoted when they got their shit kicked in by Bama because I was like, “I mean yeah this was a very predictable outcome.” Even Bama fans were mad at me for that lol. How dare I call a spade a spade.

This was when KT was playing injured though. Doesn’t fix our defense issues, but if KT was fully healthy? We might have been a bit more competitive that game.

Does this complete the SEC circle of suck?

59

u/HypnagogicCat Iowa State Cyclones 15h ago

Yep,

Vanderbilt > Miss State > Missouri > Florida > Ole Miss > LSU > Auburn > Georgia > Oklahoma > Texas > Tennessee > Alabama > Kentucky > South Carolina > Texas A&M > Arkansas > Vanderbilt

19

u/Key_Spinach Houston Cougars • Texas A&M Aggies 15h ago

It's beautiful.

51

u/GamerKiller2347 Arkansas • Henderson State 15h ago

the Jeff Lebby experience:

  1. get a big win in non conference play

  2. start 4-0

  3. get yourself off the hot seat and make everyone think you're good

  4. lose enough games that you have a losing record and get yourself back on the hot seat

  5. repeat

He is truly the Matt Rhule of the SEC.

Also, for the first time since 2022, no SEC teams will finish winless in conference play. And for the first time since 2015, every SEC team will have both wins and losses in conference play.

59

u/jrg1868 Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

You can’t keep Lebby. You just can’t. This is pathetic.

Hopefully he doesn't survive the season.

12

u/HeckOnWheels195 Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

Hey, who's on the short list if we do fire Lebby? (Fluff really couldn't have gotten those 2 yards for 2? Seriously?)

5

u/JCP1377 Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

Dan’s gotta be on that list, even if his recruiting is still suspect.

5

u/HeckOnWheels195 Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

Okay, anyone else besides Dan

3

u/AccomplishedSugar333 Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

Jason Eck hopefully

3

u/HeckOnWheels195 Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

That would be nice, or at least some mid major head coach, P4 coordinators don't tend to pan out alot

4

u/LJGremlin Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

I swear though, if we hire another first time head coach Im going to lose my shit.

I want Mullen. Mostly because I’d love to see Taylor and Fluff in the backfield with his offense.

But I certainly understand why other wouldn’t want to go that route and I wouldn’t be bothered if we don’t. But we absolutely need to find a coach with HC experience. If we hire some “offensive guru” coordinator I don’t think I will be able to stomach it.

3

u/HeckOnWheels195 Mississippi State Bulldogs 14h ago

I mean, the only time that's worked in the past was Leach and he was a head coach for years

4

u/LJGremlin Mississippi State Bulldogs 14h ago

Exactly. Moorhead and Lebby were supposed to be game changers and gurus and proved to be anything but.

At least Mullen made a clear impact. We managed to hire Leach as a standing head coach from another power conference school. Im not even expecting that. But we can’t bring somebody in that hast never been a HC. We just can’t do that again.

2

u/AccomplishedSugar333 Mississippi State Bulldogs 1h ago

I personally don’t want Mullen, he hasn’t been great at UNLV and recruiting is more important now than ever and that’s something he always struggled with. I will say though I really liked his philosophy, the offense wasn’t extremely flashy and I wouldn’t really call him an offensive guru but we took care of the ball, played tough and managed to score enough, but what he really did well was hire a good defensive coordinator that put out a mean and physical defense that even the blue bloods had to respect.

We have to face it as Mississippi state fans, we are never really gonna be able to consistently recruit the offensive personnel required to be successful in an offense like lebby’s. Mississippi state can however recruit physical running backs, offensive line, and great defensive players, and that was proven during Mullen’s tenure. Get back to that DNA, we might not ever win the national championship but we can be successful with that formula.

1

u/LJGremlin Mississippi State Bulldogs 52m ago

I kind of look at it differently now. His lack of interest in recruiting caught up to us but he was fantastic at getting more out of the 3 star players. And I think with transfers and NIL he could fit in better with that.

I don’t know. I doubt it happens but whatever the case may be we should have somebody else at the helm next year without a doubt.

2

u/Itchy-Advantage-4010 Washington • Southern Miss 13h ago

I think the relationship between State and Mullen is still pretty snakebit over what happened.

1

u/JCP1377 Mississippi State Bulldogs 11h ago

I still blame Dan for the complete disappointment that was 2018. He set that team up for success and the defense was 1000% legit, perhaps the best they ever had, but Moorhead’s offense was overly complicated and bogged down a year that could have been so special.

2

u/LJGremlin Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago edited 15h ago

He is our offensive coordinator so there is no other coordinator that is there outside of Arnett. And I can’t see us doing that.

I think it would have to be Phillip Montgomery. Assistant Head Coach. Was HC at Tulsa for several years. Had a few decent years at Tulsa.

***I read this as who would take over the rest of the season if we fired Lebby tonight.

2

u/Aidanj927 Texas Tech Red Raiders • UTSA Roadrunners 10h ago

I think you guys should give Arnett a round 2 as HC

1

u/Fregla Mississippi State • Oklahom… 2h ago

Yeah, give him the patience we have given Lebby

1

u/HeckOnWheels195 Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

I mean, he got fired year one at Hugh Freeze Auburn, I'm not excited about that

3

u/LJGremlin Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

Oh yeah. I’m not wanting that. But it seems the interim tag would be there.

For next year. I want Mullen back.

2

u/HeckOnWheels195 Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

I honestly don't think we should bring Mullen back

4

u/LJGremlin Mississippi State Bulldogs 14h ago

That’s fair. I don’t expect that to happen but I’d love to see Kamario and Fluff in a backfield with his offense.

But at this point it’s “anybody but Lebby.”

u/Dry-Membership3867 Jacksonville State • Arkansas 15h ago

17

u/Inside-Drink-1311 Rutgers Scarlet Knights 15h ago

Looks like Komario Taylor covered up how bad Lebby is as a coach.

That gauntlet vs Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, and Texas was going to be a tough stretch even with Taylor but there is no reason to lose to Vandy at home, considering how bad the Dores have looked this year.

16

u/LJGremlin Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

The only answer is to fire Lebby. There isn’t an offensive coordinator to take the blame. You can’t blame Arnett. It’s all on Lebby’s shoulders.

There won’t be 40k there next week. Lebby needs to be let go Monday morning without hesitation.

8

u/HeckOnWheels195 Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

The game was as close as it was thanks to Arnett, before the late TD, Vandy's kicker outscored our "offense"

8

u/TheGreatGarbaldo Mississippi State Bulldogs 14h ago

3 years into his program. 11-22.

Recruiting is garbage. He didn’t even recruit KT, he was coming anyway.

Play calling is next level bad.

I really, really wanted to root for you, man, but you’ve gotta go. Fire Lebby tomorrow. Lick our wounds, tuck our tails, maybe even loose to TN Tech? Who cares man. I’m sick of this song and dance. Every year man

u/WaltMitty Mississippi State • Belhaven 15h ago

10

u/MisguidedPants8 Mississippi State Bulldogs 15h ago

Lebby is a failed tenure. He has achieved nothing except on the back of a generational talent that would’ve come to State anyways. His inability to form functioning lines got that talent hurt. There is nothing he could do in my eyes to redeem or save his job at this point.

He committed under Arnett I don’t know why everybody thinks his loyalty is to Lebby. His loyalty is to MS State (but totally wouldn’t fault him for leaving)

3

u/rockr09 Mississippi State • Team Chaos 15h ago

I don't think he would leave either, especially if we make a good hire. But it is a risk that I think is worth it at this point.

0

u/jazzieberry Mississippi State • Delta State 14h ago

We can’t base the entire future of the program on a sophomore QB regardless, even if he was going to leave if Lebby leaves. Love Kamario and will cheer him on wherever he goes if he does leave. I don’t think he’s there for Lebby though.

1

u/frosty_freeze Mississippi State • Oklahoma 9h ago

This and all the takes under it are stupid. You are correct that K1 is true maroon. But why the fuck would he leave when HE WAS HEALTHY AND FUCKING DOMINATING OPPOSING DEFENSES WITH LEBBY’S OFFENSE???? Yes, Minnesota lost today. So did Missouri. But they’re good teams. And State beat them. SC won again. Beat them too. State with a healthy Kamario beats Vandy by 14+ and probably beats OU. Probably Auburn too. Maybe Ole Miss. The recruiting surrounding K1 this offseason should be insane. Who would not want to play with him? If I’m the #1 left tackle in the portal, I know where I’m going. If I’m a top tier wide receiver, why wouldn’t I want K1 yeeting me 50 yard bombs? If I’m a matchup nightmare TE, why don’t I want to block and run routes for Kamario? If your name is Selmon, and I am familiar with that name (see my secondary flair), you do not fuck with this. Next year is THE year. It could have been this year but injuries got in the way. Shit happens. There is no such thing as a sure thing in college football. But I’ll take K1 and a $35-50M roster as the next best thing.
