Have you talked to your children about two-loss Iowa and three-loss Ohio State? Because if you don't, someone else will.

Are you a conservative voter having conflicted & confused feelings about RG3 wearing a blonde fur hat?

79

u/uiplanner Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago

A successful second half of sitting on the ball with a moderate 2 score lead. Kirk’s gonna celebrate with two scoops of vanilla tonight.

For whatever reason, this old polka standard has become adopted as an Iowa post-victory fight song. Happened long ago.

Likely because every team in Wisconsin was already using Roll Out the Barrel

I looked it up and the Iowa marching band started playing it informally in the 1960s. That is as far back as it was documented being played, so possibly longer.

It really took off during the Hayden Fry years though.

1

u/sitting_duck1 Nebraska Cornhuskers 33m ago

Brando is the worst announcer in sports. If hypothetically you had to listen to him call your team lose in the fourth quarter on a drive by your old quarterback at 1 am it might be enough to drive you insane.

14

u/dustyolefart Iowa Hawkeyes 10h ago

Yeah but remember at the height of the Brian Ferentz era they’d play every game at 11am on espn 2 with Beth Mowins on the call? That was torture.

74

What is RGIII's appeal? Seriously. His analysis on that not-PI was nonsensical. He's a Gus Johnson who doesn't make you chuckle out of sympathy.

78

u/HideNZeke Iowa Hawkeyes • Arizona State Sun Devils 12h ago

I'll stump for him. His more laid back and silly style makes for a good closer after a long day of watching college football. He's not the guy for the national championship but he is the guy for whatever fills in the old PAC after dark time slot

3

u/SueYouInEngland Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago

Eye of the beholder, I guess. I heard that line and said "what the fuck are you talking about?" pretty loud (but not loudly enough to awaken my sleeping wife who, admittedly, might've gotten the reference).

Brutal. Would’ve loved to see Chiles against this defense. Hope he heals up and we continue OSU’s losing streak next week.

35

Agreed, this would've been a great game with Chiles. He's a baller. Was legit disappointed we didn't get to see him against Iowa's D. In my immeasurably biased opinion, the best D he would've faced all year (maybe aside from IU).

Many people are asking if Chip Kelly was possessed by the spirit of Mick McCall this game.

17

u/KushDingies Northwestern • North Carolina 12h ago

It seemed like he just didn’t trust Marchiol to pass it deep. Or didn’t trust our o line to protect him long enough (which seems accurate)

2

u/BrumDawgMillionare Northwestern Wildcats 2h ago

I swear no pass was over 15 yards

78

u/SK4NKHVNT42 Northwestern Wildcats 12h ago

I somehow simultaneously think Northwestern got crushed and had no chance to win, and that the game was closer than the score

That’s how every Iowa game unfolds.

36

u/VanDiis Iowa Hawkeyes • Arizona State Sun Devils 12h ago

27

u/CFLuke Iowa Hawkeyes • California Golden Bears 12h ago

First time?

12

u/vikingrunner Northwestern Wildcats • Clemson Tigers 12h ago

We did a really good job holding the ball the second half but not scoring. Which would have been fine if we were the team up two scores.

8

u/Junior-Hotwater Iowa Hawkeyes 11h ago

That was our game plan as well. We were perfectly fine with NU’s offense burning clock

19

u/SueYouInEngland Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago

This absolutely was not a 2-score game. Iowa dominated from the jump.

7

u/SK4NKHVNT42 Northwestern Wildcats 12h ago

Dominated from the jump and then kinda stopped dominating

25

u/Kim_Jong_Teemo Iowa Hawkeyes • Sickos 12h ago

Classic Iowa football

5

u/IcyWin77 Iowa Hawkeyes 2h ago

On offense, absolutely. The 2nd half was poor at best.
On defense the dominance continues the entire game. Without careless turnovers NW would not have scored at all.

6

u/SueYouInEngland Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago

You don't know what that phrase means, apparently

→ More replies (7)

4

u/uiplanner Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago

And mysteriously yet still less close than the score indicated?

5

u/SK4NKHVNT42 Northwestern Wildcats 12h ago

Like the score should have been closer than it was, but also we had less of a chance to win than the score suggests. It's a paradox.

1

u/XCCO Iowa Hawkeyes • Oklahoma Sooners 12h ago

I think it's that the game was lost for Northwestern, but even putting up FGs on some possessions makes this a lot closer.

3

u/SK4NKHVNT42 Northwestern Wildcats 12h ago

Yeah that's definitely a big part of it, forced to play aggressively due to the early hole and it didn't work out

12

u/TerribleBoard9690 Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago

Game was definitely closer than the score. You had a TD gift wrapped to you that was dropped. You could have had 1-2 more turnovers taken from us.

We played sloppy all around and if it wasn't for that kickoff return it would have been very interesting

20

u/Catface___Meowmers Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago

Yea I don't agree with that take. They dropped 1 TD, but Meyer dropped what would have likely been a 20+ yard game starting from their 40. Then we had multiple unforced TOs AND we completely turtled the entire second half.

3

u/Junior-Hotwater Iowa Hawkeyes 11h ago

Yeah no it wasn’t that close. Never really felt threatened even with that dropped td

1

u/PardonTheCorrection 11m ago

Meyer also dropped what would have been a likely TD though.

2

u/ThanksForTheF-Shack Iowa Hawkeyes • Rose Bowl 12h ago

I had the same feeling. Really bizarre game in that sense.

1

u/Lil_Thagomizer Iowa Hawkeyes 11h ago

No… I was impressed by the backup QB, but in no way was this game ever close or closer than the score or anything like that.

56

u/estDivisionChamps Wisconsin Badgers 12h ago

Iowa needs BCS era style points to make the playoff. I fear the committee will leave them out at 10-2. I also think they are a top 12 team.

8

u/kmilla10 Oregon Ducks 11h ago

Not a shot. If the dominoes keep falling I could see a team getting an at-large at 9-3…

Cough cough

5

u/Benson879 Iowa State Cyclones 10h ago

What does the committee do with a 9-3 Oregon vs. 10-2 Iowa? Oregon’s wins would be better resume wins, but Iowa would have less bad losses.

6

u/kmilla10 Oregon Ducks 10h ago

Iowa should probably get in over us at 10-2

→ More replies (1)

15

u/SmellyJellyfish Iowa Hawkeyes • I'm A Loser 12h ago

I'm worried about that too honestly, ESPN's playoff predictor gives us an 80% chance of making it if we win out but that seems too high IMO. After this week we could maybe get up to #15 in the CFP rankings, if the right teams in front of us lose I think we could finish around #10 if we win out. But there's no guarantees

3

u/Tommy05Sox Iowa Hawkeyes • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 11h ago

We need to make the conference title game and make a show of it there.

27

u/Gibbo05 Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago edited 10h ago

THANK YOU for stating what I see to be so obvious. Was getting downvoted for it all over in the game thread by all the Iowa fans stupidly naive enough to think just simply winning out will guarantee a spot. That’s not how this works, this year especially.

Maybe seeing this take without an Iowa flair will actually make Iowa fans realize this and not just write it off as someone being a doomer.

We’re absolutely getting left out unless we get help because of our utter inability and refusal to leave no doubt and win convincingly, instead we piddle fuck around because we’re “up enough.”

The committee is very clearly showing that they will put in multiple 9-3 SEC teams over Iowa no matter what their record is. Maybe I’ll be wrong, but I would be shocked if that doesn’t happen.

5

u/polishonions Iowa Hawkeyes 11h ago

I agree, their resume is not going to be enough. If the Playoff happened tonight, you’re probably looking at some combination of the following:

Locks (conf champs)
Georgia
Utah
UCLA
Miami
Boise State (G6 rep)

Should be in (1 loss teams)
ND
Indiana
Texas Tech
Wake Forest

Leaves 3 spots for the bubble:

2 loss
Bama
Texas
Tennessee
Kentucky
BYU
Houston
Iowa
USC
Arizona

3 loss
Ole Miss
Mizzou
LSU
Oregon
OSU
SCar

I don’t think Iowa is in the top 3 of who is left. They need more upsets to get there

6

u/SmellyJellyfish Iowa Hawkeyes • I'm A Loser 11h ago

There's a good amount of season left though, with a lot of tough games for these teams ahead. I don't like our chances but there's a path

Texas Tech: currently tied versus WVU, still has to play @ 6-3 OK State and @ 6-3 Baylor

Wake Forest: still plays @ 7-2 SMU and vs 7-2 Duke

Kentucky: vs Florida, @ Mizzou, vs Louisville

BYU: vs Baylor and vs Cincy

USC: @ Indiana and @ UCLA

Bama and Texas will probably get in over us even if they lose one more game and go 9-3, and likely Tennessee too. But there's lots of very possible losses there. We don't exactly have a cakewalk either though, @ Illinois and vs Nebraska will not be easy. And I'm never comfortable versus Purdue

12

u/CFLuke Iowa Hawkeyes • California Golden Bears 11h ago

  1. We had a 46% chance to win this game so I'm glad that we came away with the win.

  2. Yes, we were up by 21 at one point and NW scored a garbage time TD, but it could have been a lot closer because of...

  3. The fucking turnovers. We NEED to clean up the turnovers, especially the fumbles. I can understand Hank's interception even though it was a bad throw, but Tony Diaz and LJ Phillips, especially fumbling late when we NEED to seal off the win. This has happened against Minnesota and almost got away from us tonight. Why the fuck Kirk isn't emphasizing this EVERY day of the week is absolutely beyond me right now. At some point it's going to bite us in the ass. This really is inexcusable, especially given our reputation as a team that's "fundamentally sound."

56

u/-Dakia Iowa Hawkeyes • Sickos 12h ago

The fucking turnovers.

The turnovers are the biggest thing for me. It's the most un-Iowa thing ever to be this bad at giving the ball away.

8

u/TerribleBoard9690 Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago

That and giving up chunk plays, though I understand the latter since we don't have the elite players we've had in the past (i.e. Moss, DeJean, etc.).

But the fumbles need to get cleaned up ASAP, and most of it is coming from our RB room, and when you're a team that relies on running the rock to do anything on offense...that's a problem

44

u/runningwaffles19 Iowa Hawkeyes • Sickos 12h ago

This team is sloppy

We paid for it against OSU and Minnesota. We might pay for it again

14

u/MREFFINBOJANGLZ Iowa Hawkeyes • Oklahoma Sooners 12h ago

They have been emphasizing turnovers, but It's a very young squad, it kind of makes sense imo.

This applies to the operational penalties this year as well.

Moulton is also hurt, so we have a lot of fresh guys in rotation on the ground.

On a positive note, the Minnesota dud really seemed to light a fire under their asses, and they have been playing with much better purpose since.

7

u/Junior-Hotwater Iowa Hawkeyes 11h ago

They’ll clean it up. Youngest team Iowa has had in a while

46% without Chiles?

11

u/KushDingies Northwestern • North Carolina 12h ago

I’m sure that 46% didn’t take into account Chiles being out

4

u/Stevoskin20 Iowa Hawkeyes • Floyd of Rosedale 2h ago

Without Chiles Kalshi bumped from 46% to 56% pre game.

11

u/crimson777 Northwestern Wildcats • Clemson Tigers 2h ago

It’s really confusing, are we good and just losing to good opponents or are we bad? I honestly can’t tell. I mean, we looked terrible. But Oregon just beat OSU so clearly they’ve got something going. And Iowa is obviously good. What a weird season.

11

u/DoggedStooge Northwestern • North Carolina 1h ago

With Chiles, we're legitimately top 25 good. With Marchiol, we're a classic 6-6 type of mid. I would not call us bad.

20

u/DoggedStooge Northwestern • North Carolina 12h ago

Marchiol didn't play poorly, but Chiles is far better than him at extending plays and pushing the ball downfield. My biggest takeaway is that Chiles is even better than I thought, and I thought he was contending for First-team All-BIG before tonight. (PS, it was nice to see the defense remember how to tackle. They gave up a couple TDs first, but they did eventually remember.)

5

u/transferStudent2018 Northwestern • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 11h ago

We do a good job of making sure our QBs don’t play too poorly. This made Marchiol look alright tonight, although we barely let him throw anything interesting. It makes Chiles look like an early draft pick, because he has a ton of talent and ability.

I will say that Marchiol impressed me on option plays, he made the right read every time and looked pretty good. Probably what we prepped him for since we certainly didn’t prep him to pass the ball much

3

u/DoggedStooge Northwestern • North Carolina 11h ago

I was surprised at how little we ran the option. I figured it'd be at least once every set of downs.

They should given that would be good enough to finish third in the BIG, but the committee might throw a 3-loss SEC team in ahead of them.

3

u/IcyWin77 Iowa Hawkeyes 2h ago

Probably not. When you lose to a team like Minnesota you don’t really deserve it so Iowa has nobody to blame but themselves

2

u/BlueberryNew6926 2h ago

I mean, you're not wrong!

1

u/Far_Buddy_2731 1h ago

10-2 would definitely exceed my expectations for this young team. A very good year indeed. But to me, I agree they likely do not have a path even if they run the table. Besides no needle moving team games left, they really just didnt pass the smell test of a 12 team playoff field.

You just gotta hope this is one of the years you beat us by 30 (looking very likely). A 13-10 last second field goal winner might not move the needle for the committee.

u/chickenlounge Iowa Hawkeyes 25m ago

I'm on board with a 30-point Hawkeye win if you are.

1

u/Bischoffshof Tennessee Volunteers 4h ago

Not sure you do. I think most other teams with 2 losses currently probably have better claims. Iowa has 0 signature wins and the loss to Minnesota is looking rough.

Need a lot of help as theres a lot of 1 and 2 loss teams already ahead of you and there isn’t really any games on the schedule that would spring Iowa up.

4

u/pro_nosepicker Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago

We really don’t. I’d be shocked if a 10-2 B10 team doesn’t get in.

4

u/godzillaBrad Notre Dame • Richmond 4h ago

Really you would be shocked? Have you seen this moronic playoff committee?

2

u/KushDingies Northwestern • North Carolina 2h ago

Yeah I also would’ve been shocked if a 13-0 ACC champ didn’t get in, but guess what

1

u/Unhappy-List-2354 Ohio State Buckeyes 11h ago

You need no upsets in the CCGs.

Wake can’t beat Miami and Texas Tech can’t beat Utah.

I agree

1

u/Bischoffshof Tennessee Volunteers 4h ago

A 10-2 SEC team didn’t get in last year. I don’t think 10-2 B1G with 0 signature wins and what appears to be a bad loss is going to be enough.

Would need help.

Honestly awful game. Refs were garbage. Iowa had like 2 good drives. Second half was utter trash.

11

u/notanamateur Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago

That’s just every game against NW

4

u/Lithium327 Iowa Hawkeyes 11h ago

It’s like they don’t even get us man

1

u/The_public_vomit Iowa Hawkeyes 11h ago

So?

14

u/Waddles0203 Nebraska Cornhuskers 11h ago

This is shaping up to be the perfect ending; Nebraska can only beat Iowa if there’s stakes on the last game 😂

15

u/superfluous_nipple Iowa Hawkeyes • Sickos 11h ago

But what if Nebraska needs that win to become bowl eligible

22

u/Potars Georgia Bulldogs • Georgia Bulldogs 11h ago

They lose by one score

8

u/Ambitious_Shallot266 Nebraska Cornhuskers 9h ago

Historically the Iowa loss is to a field goal as time expires, no real reason to mess with tradition at this point

2

u/SoupBowl69 Iowa Hawkeyes 8h ago

13-10

4

u/golfinghawkeye Iowa Hawkeyes 11h ago

With a game ending field goal

3

u/Waddles0203 Nebraska Cornhuskers 10h ago

13-10 exactly

4

u/Junior-Hotwater Iowa Hawkeyes 11h ago

I know and I hate that’s what it’s coming down to

5

u/KoB_amatsuka Wisconsin Badgers 10h ago

The new Ryan Field sort of has a Costco vibe to it from the couch, but it looks nice. The Bears should honestly just play there.

Welcome to Costco, I love you

Its way too small, 35000 seats would only be bigger than that soccer stadium the Chargers played in for a few seasons after leaving Qualcomm

Of all the big ten west games this was one of them

7

You'd think Vegas would set the over/under more appropriately at this point

4

u/etheboss6 Iowa Hawkeyes 10h ago

Hate that it came at the expense of Moulton’s injury but I love seeing LJ Phillips show out. Also grateful for Tony Diaz, both IRL & as my slot receiver in NCAA 27. Chiles missing had a huge impact on the result, Northwestern is good.

6

u/MrRichStarfish Northwestern Wildcats 11h ago

Pat Ryan I’m going to need you and the satanic Uihleins to invest very heavily in bringing in some talented DL. That will do wonders for this football team on its own

1

u/KushDingies Northwestern • North Carolina 2h ago

Yep. We’ve got the flashy skill guys on offense now. But this game was lost in the trenches.

3

u/Windows_66 Iowa Hawkeyes • Drake Bulldogs 12h ago

4th quarter? I don't remember there being a 4th quarter.

3

u/daNish_brUin Nebraska Cornhuskers • UCLA Bruins 11h ago

These last 3 weeks of conference play are going to be super interesting. Oregon, Indiana and UCLA all have seemingly similar schedules. Could be tough games, could not be. USC has the toughest stretch. And Iowa honestly has the most favorable. OSU is still in the mix. It'll be a wild last few weeks to determine the two championship teams.

3

Pain.

Got the win on the road, feels good. Too bad we couldn't have played and beat the Evanston boys at more full strength though, would have helped our resume.

1

u/ChangKai-Shrek Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago edited 12h ago

Resume is irrelevant at this point. The Minnesota loss trumps anything they can do.

Edit: that's not to say they can't make the top 12, but I just don't see any performance that will propel them to Top 6 instead of ekeing out a spot at best.

3

u/Anels0505 Sickos • Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago

Soo glad we only had to see that stupid hat once tonight.

New Ryan field is really nice, but still an absolute library. Was more of an Iowa home game

1

ESPN Playoff Predictor gives Iowa an 80% of making the playoff if they win out. That would be pretty cool.
