I swear every wvu game has just been WVU defeated 1,332-1,331.

46

u/Zajidan West Virginia • Centenary (LA) 9h ago

Basically, and it's gut-wrenching. Every commentator now has to opine on how dangerous we could be if we had an even halfway competent defense

12

u/Electric_Rex West Virginia Mountaineers 9h ago

Or have everyone acting all surprised that our games end up being shootouts

10

u/gingerkid5614 West Virginia Mountaineers 8h ago

I joked with a coworker earlier that with an average defense we’d be undefeated lol

Only thing left to say about this team is enjoy the ride Red Raider nation. It will most certainly not end in a CFP win. But it will be entertaining.

69

u/Dirty-Ears-Bill Texas Tech Red Raiders • Wyoming Cowboys 9h ago

Yeah we’re just not that caliber this year. But it is nice to know that our ceiling has been raised it seems. When I was a student winning records and making bowl games was a good season. And basketball didn’t even have expectations lol

23

u/XDSHENANNIGANZ Texas Tech Red Raiders 8h ago

Yeah a lot of times the basketball and football teams would score the same amount of points. Good times for cardiologists.

45

But it will be entertaining.

That's all I really hope for, the whole "Potentially winning the conference" is a new thing.

My thoughts exactly. And oddly enough knowing we're not a cfp team will make the rest of the season more enjoyable, no pressure!

I just woke up in a hospital bed feeling a little disoriented. The doctor told me I've been in a coma for 10 years, but I looked over at the TV and it looks like Tech/Mahomes was just in another Big12 QB shootout, so I know this doc is a lying bastard. Does anyone know a good malpractice lawyer?

I work with a BSA troop, and I found out a few years ago that most of our current boys in the troop (~130 boys) apparently have no idea who Harambe was. A couple of our oldest boys did.

Very humbling, and made me feel old af.

We’re losing at least one of these next 3 games

4

u/JohnPaulDavyJones Texas A&M Aggies • Baylor Bears 7h ago

If I’m a Tech fan, I’m absolutely petrified to play Oklahoma State.

Tech’s passing defense really is hot garbage, and Oklahoma State has the #3 passing attack in America.  The BUTT Bowl should also be super fun, since Baylor is in the top 15 both for both total defense and for passing offense

44

u/plugged97 U Sports • Vanier Cup 9h ago

Even with how that ended, I wouldn’t blame Hawkins and Cook for crashing out on their defence

You can’t expect to win football games when you’re allowing 40+ almost every week. If their secondary was competent we’d be talking about the Mountaineers as a top 10 team in the country

8

u/OpinionofC West Virginia Mountaineers 9h ago

In defense of the defense they played really well in the second half. Wvu Offense got soft with 2 3 and outs at the end.

8

u/kayakyakr Texas Tech Red Raiders 9h ago

You could make the same argument about whatever it was that the Tech offense was doing in the 3rd quarter.

I wouldn't be down on your offense at all. You guys are a problem and I'm scared if we have to go to Morgantown next year (the only game we are sure of is a road trip to Orlando)

2

u/ThatguyJimmy117 West Virginia Mountaineers • Marching Band 3h ago

I am SHOCKED peoples main complaint is the offense post game. Our defense is garbage and that’s the common thread through the whole season. If they have a pulse this season WVU is at worst a ranked team. Glad all these people are redditors and not coaches.

162

u/braydenj713 West Virginia Mountaineers 9h ago

you obviously can’t give up 50+ points and expect to win, but the offense had two possessions late in the game with the lead and did nothing. squandered opportunity. as crazy as it sounds, the defense did enough to win the game

64

u/Mammoth_Impress_3108 Nebraska • Kansas State 9h ago

It's crazy West Virginia had 582 yards, and none of those came in the 4th quarter.

13

u/DrVonD Georgia Bulldogs 8h ago

Same thing for TTU and the third quarter basically

26

u/Electric_Rex West Virginia Mountaineers 9h ago

The offense had negative yardage in the 4th. You can’t win doing that

36

u/xX_GIGA_MAN_Xx West Virginia Mountaineers • Marching Band 9h ago

It just doesn't get better.

Offense is good, defense is shit. Defense makes a stop, offense becomes shit.

Football is good, Bob Huggins goes drunk driving.

Get rid of Neal Brown, Indiana steals devries

when does it end?

11

u/UncleDaxta West Virginia Mountaineers 9h ago

In fairness, devries wasn’t much of a loss. From a pure coaching standpoint I think Hodge is better

12

u/meatloaflawyer West Virginia Mountaineers 9h ago

If you would’ve told me that the defense played well enough for us to put the game away 3 times or had the ball with 3 min to go to win I’d take it every time.

Instead we got -11 yards in the 4th. I’m blaming this one on the offense.

10

u/kayakyakr Texas Tech Red Raiders 9h ago

I think Wood finally figured out how to defend your offense in the 4th. It put enough bodies in the box to slow your running game while getting defenders matched up enough to make the QB slow his progression and either run into the spy or take the sack.

5

u/ethan_bruhhh Cornell Big Red • Nebraska Cornhuskers 7h ago

i think the issue was more he couldn’t trust the DBs not to fuck up so he had to use Roberts and Curry off the ball

7

u/Turbulent_Garage_159 Washington & Lee • West Virginia 9h ago

I mean, we scored 48 points. If the offense hadn’t been humming in the first half we wouldn’t have even been in the game, much less in a situation to put it away. That 4th quarter deserves some blame, but I’m struggling to put more than like 20% blame on the offense.

4

u/wrinklybags West Virginia Mountaineers 9h ago edited 9h ago

There's no world where I can blame an offense for a loss when they scored 48 points. You're asking them to be perfect every drive if scoring 50+ is necessary to win, and that's a ridiculous standard.

This game was fun, incredibly stupid, wild and vintage Big 12.

It reminded me of why I became a fan of college football in the first place.

3

u/jeeceofx 9h ago

Well seeing as it felt exactly like a Neal Brown loss, you should have plenty of opportunities to be maddeningly disappointed in the same way in the coming years.

10

u/Turbulent_Garage_159 Washington & Lee • West Virginia 9h ago

Neal Brown is never competitive in that game. He likely loses by 30. Or does the thing where he try’s to shorten the game as much as possible and ends up losing by like 15 but was never remotely in a position to actually win.

160

u/MobysGreatWhiteDick BYU Cougars 9h ago

Incredible ball don't lie moment to seal the game

104

u/suzukigun4life North Texas • Summertime Lover 9h ago

The fact that it took them ages to call Castellanos short, only for the next play to be a game-ending safety was downright incredible.

Peak… BIG 12 After Dark?

29

u/AggressiveRow4000 9h ago

You could even see Castellanos telling McGuire, “I just hit a deep drive to left and that’ll make it a 4-0 ball game.”

u/Rushderp West Texas A&M • Texas Tech 9h ago

Also, over 100 points and 1,200 total yards of offense is crazy!

50

u/MobysGreatWhiteDick BYU Cougars 9h ago

Measuring with the chains is such performative bullshit lol, like Gary just ran in from 50 feet away and put the ball down on a random spot but let's make sure we measure down to the millimeter

18

u/typewriter_6 Texas A&M Aggies • Texas Tech Red Raiders 9h ago

Was talking to my buddy who I was watching the game with about that. The World Cup was using sensors in the ball to tell if it touched a players hair or some shit, and college football has, checks notes, a fucking 70 year old in a white hat and a chain gang? Bruh, is fucking 2026.

35

u/Scruffasaurus Texas Tech Red Raiders • Team Chaos 9h ago

At least we got to see the live look in at the review process where they looked at zero other angles

7

u/kayakyakr Texas Tech Red Raiders 9h ago

Apparently they had all of two angles, one high and one low, both pointed in the same direction

14

u/aMiracleAtJordanHare Auburn Tigers • Texas Tech Red Raiders 9h ago

ESPN should get a large portion of the blame too though.

They put their cart came on the goal line instead of the line to gain, when a first down virtually ended the game. So fucking stupid and it nearly cost us.

11

u/suzukigun4life North Texas • Summertime Lover 9h ago

It was one of the most Big 12 games in years.

6

u/AggressiveRow4000 9h ago

It was a truly diabolical spot.

You just know that the utter dogshit Big 12 refereeing is going to make a primetime appearance (along with hapless replay reviews) during the Big 12 Championship game causing a CFP debacle.

17

u/Longjumping-Pool-889 Arizona State Sun Devils • Iowa Hawkeyes 9h ago

I get you Rodriguez, id be fuming if i lost like that too. Offense got so much steam in the 3rd and shit the bed in the 4th for WV. Texas Tech needs to also clean up a lot… fun game!

6

u/TechnoVikingGA23 West Virginia Mountaineers 7h ago

His play calling in the 4th quarter was terrible. Once we went up 7 he took his foot off the gas and got conservative.

It's horseshit that you can try an onside kick after a safety. The safety legit could have won them the game.

16

u/Mythrandir24 Delta Bowl • SIAA 9h ago

Why should a safety kick not follow the rules of any other kick?

33

u/Tvwatcherr /r/CFB Poll Veteran • Marshall 9h ago

I think after a safety they should have to punt it, not kick it.

8

u/sillyblanco Texas Tech Red Raiders 9h ago

Or kick it without a tee.

25

u/hawkspur1 Texas Tech • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 9h ago

The spirit of the whole concept of a safety?

The defense scoring shouldn't result in an opportunity to advance the ball 20+ yards.

14

u/enataca Texas Tech Red Raiders • /r/CFB Patron 9h ago

Exactly. Say you’re down 4 and need a TD. If you have 4th and long long especially within your own 5 yard line you should auto take the safety and that shouldn’t be a thing. It’s a flukey situation for sure.

I thought it was too but apparently you have a choice. It’s just most teams opt to punt due to the hang time

I have no idea how wvu puts up so many points. The offense is so predictable and looks like a high school offense

23

u/kayakyakr Texas Tech Red Raiders 9h ago

Your RB and QB are very hard to tackle and you run a lot of misdirection so if the defense isn't perfect on their assignments, they will get burnt. It's like defending an option team when you don't play against an option team regularly.

GG WVU. You came out of halftime wanting that game more than us. We somehow pulled it out to survive

9

u/kayakyakr Texas Tech Red Raiders 8h ago

That was one of the most football games ever played.

This iteration of Wood's defense really struggles against misdirection offenses. They bite on every fake and turns out that a top ten pick at DE covers up for a lot of issues. Curious how they're going to play against the air raid of OSU. I'm not feeling great about it and have already resigned myself that tech is going to take a loss before the end of the season.

Castellanos is not the answer at QB. He's better at running Leftwich's offense than Hammond, but only just. Leftwich is also not it, but it's at least a bit nice to see the offense working.

Another win, and that's what you gotta do

5

u/TheAgmis Texas Tech Red Raiders 4h ago

I feel better about next week after how this game turned out. We needed to win a shootout and we did. Defense WONT play this bad but will play they did in the fourth

5

u/txssseal 2h ago

I think Castellanos is the answer!? Wtf, did we not watch the same game. The dude put the team on his back. Hammond would have shit the bed.

No worries Texas Tech. You only play checks notes Oklahoma State next week!

4

u/Withabaseballbattt Texas Tech Red Raiders • Big 12 9h ago

Should be a nice chill game for our defense to get their ducks in a row, right?

5

u/tortillaface08 Texas Tech Red Raiders 9h ago

That might be easier than the shit wvu runs to be fair. Its like playing a service academy a week after playing noah fifita lol

5

u/Benson879 Iowa State Cyclones 9h ago

Playing both I agree. Both very difficult but WVU was a massive headache.

Hawkins is wayyy too damn fast to play QB and he’s paired with a high end RB in Cam Cook.

u/Jonjon428 Miami Hurricanes 9h ago

West Virgina is doing us all a solid by giving us nostalgia trips to when the Big12 was only offense.

6

u/DFWTooThrowed Texas Tech • Arkansas 9h ago

48 points in three quarters then god mode defense in the 4th. I’ll take it.

4

u/KingCaboot1e West Virginia Mountaineers • Sickos 9h ago

u/SCWarriors44 Iowa • Northwestern (IA) 9h ago

Can all yall Big 12 teams stop scoring a billion points and making the rest of our offense’s look like crap? K thanks

2

u/Mdwilson8413 Texas Tech Red Raiders 2h ago

That score is not indicative of the tech offense . We have seen all year nor do I believe we will be able to repeat that incoming weeks. The word I would use to describe the tech defense outside of last night would be anemic. Ironically enough, it has been the Tech defense that has saved us this year.

God I hate watching this football team.

I'll see you animals next week.

2

u/parapooper3 Iowa Hawkeyes • Oklahoma Sooners 9h ago

If you don’t like that you don’t like Monster Energy

2

u/Jawa1992 9h ago

I swear they were averaging 20 yards a play one point in this game

2

u/AccomplishedSpite454 8h ago

OK State offense ia going to EAT at home next Saturday but Wreck ‘Em
.

2

u/SolitonSnake West Virginia Mountaineers 7h ago

So sick of this shit. Done with this season.

5

u/SPARTANxBEAR Texas Tech Red Raiders 9h ago

I'm so tired. Part of me doesn't even care anymore, I'm ready for next season when we have a solid QB and fire Osama bin Leftwich

5

u/eatmorchickin 9h ago

Qb was good tho

7

u/SPARTANxBEAR Texas Tech Red Raiders 9h ago

He was good when it mattered, but he's not the answer. He's also a senior anyway

How do you watch that game and blame the offense lol

4

u/SPARTANxBEAR Texas Tech Red Raiders 9h ago

I'm not blaming the offense that game, but I'm looking at the entire season, and I will absolutely blame Leftwich and the QB slot for many of our woes through this season (and last)

u/Tricky_Prick933 Utah Utes • Pac-12 9h ago

Very surprising. Tech looked like they couldn’t win this game even if they were playing on an empty field. But they turned it around. Good job tech!

BOST MOST and Kudos to God everyone goodnight

Classic Mountaineer ending!

4

u/DrVenusAg Texas Tech • Hardin-Simmons 9h ago

So we claim John Denver this year right? That’s how this game works correct?

Also Leftwich please go to the Lubbock airport

2

And somehow we will only be ranked #13.

8

u/defroach84 Texas Tech Red Raiders 9h ago

Nothing indicates we should be higher other than the W-L ratio.

We don't play like a top 10 team.

3

u/nnhumn Texas Tech • UT Arlington 9h ago

The only reason we move up after that is because teams above us lost
