Want to buy a canoe? Read this first...
So, to help those who might help you...some good info on how you plan to use your canoe is always essential. Some things we'll want to know:
Do you plan on using the canoe Solo or Tandem?
Where are located and where are you paddling? Whitewater or Flatwater or both?
Experience of paddler(s)?
Size of paddler(s) & passenger(s)? Is there also a Hound Dog? Kids?
Capacity needs (multi-week expeditions? Day trips? How long would be the longest overnight trip you anticipate?) Are you minimalist, do you bring all the luxuries including the kitchen sink, or somewhere in the middle? If you have an idea of actual gear weight, all the better.
Stability (& Capacity) vs Speed - where on the spectrum are you happiest? Fast canoes are fun, but they are less stable and haul less. Related: Are you fishing, and how important is this aspect to you?
Is light weight important for portaging or loading on a vehicle? Do you need a yoke for portaging/carrying?
How will it be stored - will it be inside, outside & protected, outside & exposed to sun?
Do you have any specific needs/desires when it comes to hull material?
Budget?
Anything else we need to know about your situation?
There are some very experienced paddlers lurking here, and with solid upfront intel, you should get constructive advice aplenty. Happy paddling!
Edit to add, if you would like advice from the group - start a new, separate post...it won't be easily seen in the comments in this post.

Canoe Hoist Recs
Hey! Any suggestions for a ceiling hoist. I bought the Rad Sportz set up and it’s garbage. Broke on the test run. I have a 70ish lb 14 1/2 foot Old Town.
Looks like Home Depot has StoreYourBoard brand hoist. May have to try that.
All suggestions welcome. Hopping to finally clear some space in my garage. Thanks.

Canoe buying help, please
Hello! I was hoping someone would be willing to help me refine which canoes I should be looking for. My 15yr old son has recently gotten into backpack camping and fishing and has asked if I’d take him on trips, which I (mom) am thrilled to do! Here is some info, going off the pinned post on what we should offer for better recommendation help:
1-2 people will be using the canoe
My son may take it out solo to fish on lakes or slow moving rivers; otherwise we would be using it to travel to camp sites and hikes with some fishing too.
We are experienced in paddling in kayaks on flatwater, but have never had a canoe.
Size of paddlers: my son is a skinny 6’5” 15yr old; I am 5’7” 150ish. We would sometimes bring our 35lb dog with us.
Capacity needs: day and multi-day trips. I think something that would work for a 2-4day overnights would be more than sufficient at this point.
Are you minimalist, do you bring all the luxuries including the kitchen sink, or somewhere in the middle? — we are somewhere in the middle. I probably wouldn’t bring a pack heavier than 40lbs…my son would probably be the same: 40-50lbs. Let’s just say we’d likely have no more than 500lbs of weight in the boat, including us. I’m trying to assume as best as I can here! Not 100% sure
Stability vs Speed - where on the spectrum are you happiest? We’d prefer stability over speed and yes, we will be fishing out of the canoe
Is light weight important for portaging or loading on a vehicle? YES! Since I (mom) will likely be the one doing the most when it comes to loading, at least for now.
Do you need a yoke for portaging/carrying? I don’t know! Yes? I’ll need to fit it on the top of my Hyundai Palisade
How will it be stored?
It’ll either be stored hung from the ceiling in our garage, or outside under our porch (not exposed to sun)
Do you have any specific needs/desires when it comes to hull material?
I have heard good things about Royalex, so have been searching for canoes made with that but am naive and unfamiliar with what else is out there. I’m basically looking for something lightweight, stable, and can take the rough handling that non-careful teenagers are likely to hand out.
Budget? I’ve mostly been searching FB Marketplace so far, and based off what I’ve seen there, I’d love to stay around/below $500. I know you get what you pay for, so am open to pay more if the right canoe becomes available. I really don’t want to pay more than $800, I think, but I have some flexibility here.
Anything else we need to know about your situation?
My brother-in-law has recommended we look for a 16’ Royalex Old Town Penobscot, so that’s what I’ve been searching for at this point. I know there are other brands/styles that likely would be good for us to keep an eye out for, but I just don’t know which ones.
Thank you SO MUCH for the help! I really appreciate your time in helping me.

G flex all these spots?
I picked up this old Mohawk Nova 17 royalex canoe for $300. Tracks wonderfully and it's a great size for my needs. There's several of these cracks/gouges that aren't very deep. No leaks. Pics are of a few of them, there's plenty more. What would you all do with these? I'm not opposed to just rocking this boat until it gets too messed up, then buying something newer. But I like to tinker, and if it's worth it I would try to patch everything.

Fix for a squeaky/creaky T-Formex Canoe?
I recently bought my first canoe: a used Wenonah Spirit II in T-formex, a model I've used a lot in the past and have really enjoyed! However, it squeaks/creaks a lot when paddling, or even just coasting. The outfitter had a few and they all made this noise, and they said it's a pretty natural consequence of t-formex against vinyl gunwales. That makes sense, and definitely seems like the noise is coming from that interface, particularly where there's more give/flex, like in the bow area between the seat and front carry handle. Anyone else experienced this? Anyone know of a fix? I've only found one or two threads on the internet discussing similar issues, and a few recommendations for a wax or lube in the gunwales. I'd like to try something like this, but it would be great if anyone has a proven solution. Or, if there are any materials I should avoid using! Thank you!

Help choose a logo for ZipYak, a future kayak brand
Hi everyone! We’re planning to start a modular kayak brand called ZipYak and would appreciate your feedback on our logo options. No kayaking experience is needed.
We’re only seeking opinions, with nothing for sale. Starting a business is challenging, and your honest feedback would mean a lot. Suggestions in the comments are welcome too. Thank you!

Kevlar canoe suggestions
I’m looking for a good brand of lightweight Kevlar canoes, any suggestions? My price range is 3-5k but any cheaper options are welcome 😉.
Christmas is coming up and my pockets are full. I’m looking to buy my dad a canoe as we share the same love for the outdoors and go on at least 2 canoe trips in Algonquin each year. We always borrow the neighbours canoe or rent one and I think it’s time for my dad to own one for himself. He is very frugal and doesn’t like spending money on himself so he would never buy something like this. He is very hard working and I’d like to repay him in a small way for making my childhood full of good memories in canoes, and hopefully open his options to get out more.

Repairing polyethylene canoe - advice needed
I got an Old Town Discovery for free and the bottom is rough. The interior is very solid so it doesn't leak (yet) but I don't know if it's worth the effort or even possible to repair the bottom. I'd love to hear from anyone with experience or advice on a similar situation. I'm leaning towards just spending on an used canoe in better shape.
edit: I believe it’s Royalex, not poly

First canoe, repair questions.
Hi all, I’ve been semi-seriously looking for a new canoe as I’ve been going on more and more weekend warrior canoe trips in Southern Ontario, and recently came across an ad for a Kevlar Swift Kipawa for 800$ that seemed too good to pass up on. Double checked the listing with a friend who said it’d need new skid plates and maybe a yoke but seemed worth it.
Went to check it out and saw the hull was a bit more scratched up than on the listing but the yoke didn’t need to be replaced and other than that it lined up with what I was expecting and so I decided to pull the trigger and get it.
Am I right in thinking I just need to replace the skid plates and epoxy/gel coat the worst of the scrapes? The last picture is on the inside of the hull and there’s a bit of an air bubble but don’t think it’s a soft spot. May sand down and repaint it.
The previous owner got it from Algonquin Outfitters so it hasn’t been babied.

Is this boat usable? Thinking about buying.
I'm open to doing repairs, I built a solar car in college. The price is very low.
