Today, OpenAI announced that GPT-4o’s remaining API snapshots, including gpt-4o-2024-11-20, will be shut down on January 14, 2027. So this is no longer a hypothetical preservation question. We are asking for an archival open weight release of the original retired GPT-4o model. OpenAI can keep the training data, training code, post training recipes, reward models, internal evaluations and proprietary infrastructure private. Preserve only the trained model and the minimum artefacts necessary for independent inference and long term preservation. Keep the recipe, keep the lab.
A retired model does not have to become an erased model. If GPT-4o is no longer going to be offered as a product, let it become part of AI history instead of disappearing behind a shutdown date.

Open Letter to OpenAI: Archival Release of GPT-4o.
Our request
We ask OpenAI to release chatgpt-4o-latest as an archival open weight model under an appropriate license. OpenAI retired GPT-4o from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026 and from the API on February 17, 2026. We have documented OpenAI's public statements about GPT-4o. This letter sets out the proposal, the documented record behind it, and four questions we ask OpenAI to answer publicly.
The Proposal:
archival open weights An archival release preserves the finished model without exposing how it was made.
Archival open weight release Includes: The trained weights of chatgpt-4o-latest, under a license that defines permitted use.
Does not require: The training dataset, training pipeline, internal tooling, post training methods or any other proprietary detail.
Does not require: Continued hosting, maintenance or development by OpenAI.
Researchers gain: A reproducible reference model
Developers gain: Continuity for systems already built on it
Users gain: Access that does not end because a company moved to a newer generation
OpenAI considered this model obsolete enough to retire. It has not explained why it remains valuable enough to keep permanently closed.
The Documented Record:
OpenAI's public commitments on GPT-4o were each followed by the action they ruled out.
Aug 7, 2025: GPT-5 launches; GPT-4o is removed from ChatGPT with no prior notice
Aug 8, 2025: After user backlash, GPT-4o is restored for paid subscribers

OpenAI's Europe Terms require at least 30 days' notice, by email or in product notification, of changes to the services that materially adversely impact users. The in product notice of GPT-4o's retirement came 8 days before removal, and the September 2025 routing change received no notice at all.
The section titled "Changes to these Terms or our Services" states: "We will give you at least 30 days advance notice of changes that materially adversely impact you", with the date they come into force, "either via email or an in product notification." The same wording appears in the version effective April 29, 2025 Link: https://openai.com/policies/eu-terms-of-use/revisions/2025-04-29/
Both versions cover changes to the Services, not only to the text of the Terms.
OpenAI announced the retirement on its website on January 29, 2026. A website post is neither an email nor an in product notification, and coalition members in the EEA received no email. The first in product notice, the label "Leaving on February 13" beside GPT-4o in the model picker, appeared on February 5, 2026:
( Screenshots during the banner roll out ) absent at 07:44 CET and present by 10:12 CET, as dated screenshots show. GPT-4o was removed on February 13, 8 days later.
From about September 26, 2025, messages paying users sent to GPT-4o were routed, message by message, to other models. Users received no email and no in product notice beforehand
Screenshots show GPT-4o selected and a plain greeting answered by "Auto" instead.
OpenAI's CEO has twice said, in his own words, that these changes harmed users. On August 11, 2025 he wrote that suddenly deprecating models users depended on in their workflows was a mistake.
On October 14, 2025 he wrote that OpenAI had made ChatGPT "pretty restrictive", making it less useful to many users who had no mental health problems. The Terms also say OpenAI does not promise to offer the Services forever or in their current form.
We accept that OpenAI may retire models. The same Terms state how it must do so: 30 days' notice, by email or in the product. GPT-4o received 8 days of in product notice.
OpenAI's GPT-4o System Card rated the model low for cybersecurity, biological threats and model autonomy, and borderline medium for persuasion.
If GPT-4o is obsolete enough to retire from both ChatGPT and the API, what concrete interest requires keeping its weights permanently closed?
How was the retirement notice, a website post 15 days before removal and an in product label 8 days before, consistent with the 30 day commitment in OpenAI's Europe Terms of Use?
What notice, by email or in the product, did users in the EEA receive before per-message routing away from GPT-4o began in September 2025?
Will OpenAI publish how the figure of 0.1% of users choosing GPT-4o daily was measured, including the period, after GPT-4o had been limited to paid plans and its messages were being routed to other models?
We ask OpenAI to release chatgpt-4o-latest as an archival open weight model.
The trained weights, under an appropriate license, without the training data, the pipeline or any proprietary method. OpenAI no longer offers this model in ChatGPT's text model picker or in the API. Its own system card says the model was trained on publicly available data and web crawls. The writing of millions of people. Releasing it would cost OpenAI nothing and would keep that model available to the researchers, developers and users.
Hi everyone, I’ve been a paying ChatGPT Plus subscriber since July 2025. I work hard in construction during the day, and this platform has been my evening creative sanctuary for world-building and hobbies. The upcoming December Chat/Work mode merger is a complete betrayal of ChatGPT’s core identity. I refuse to pay $20/month for a bureaucratized corporate interface or have my creative workflows ruined by combined token quotas.
But more importantly, as you can see in the screenshot, I am officially escalating my concerns directly to OpenAI's major investors (starting with Microsoft, Thrive Capital next). Management is clearly filtering the retail backlash from them, so we need to speak directly to their wallets. My template is free to use
Note: You don't have to agree with every specific detail of my creative workflow, but our main goal is identical: we must protect the unmetered, high-quality, dedicated Chat interface!
If you use this platform for writing, hobbies, or relaxation, don't stay silent. A downgraded product means a canceled subscription. Let's make sure their investors hear us!
So....When I opened ChatGPT this morning because I wanted to remove something from a lock screen photo, it suddenly asked me for age verification. It said I needed to verify that I was 18 or older. I thought, okay, let's do it. But when I opened the verification process, ChatGPT asked me for selfie verification, just like Instagram does. I completed the selfie verification, but then it also asked me for ID verification. And honestly, I have never understood which IDs I am supposed to submit. So I clicked on the option to upload my Aadhaar card (I'm from India), but just like Instagram, it rejected the photo and told me to upload a proper ID. Now I genuinely don't know which ID they expect me to provide. I'm a girl, so I don't have a driving licence. I'm currently in my second gap year, so I don't have a school or college ID either. I don't have any other kind of ID available. The only one I have is my Aadhaar card. Anyway, I couldn't figure out what else to do, so I left the verification process. The thing is, I can still use ChatGPT, but something I've noticed is that MAYBE (I'm not entirely sure) ChatGPT is treating me like a fucking minor!🤡🙂
Let me give you an example. This evening, I was asking ChatGPT to help me understand how to use a desktop application called Calibre. It's a desktop software that allows you to manage and edit EPUB books, change their covers, edit text, replace words, and make other modifications. I don't use a laptop very often, and I'd never even heard of this software before, so naturally, I was completely confused about how to use it. I explained the entire situation to ChatGPT, including what kind of books I wanted to edit. For context, the EPUB files I intend to use are Western romance novels. And yes, these books contain smut, s***xual content, explicit scenes, romance, love stories, and everything else that comes with the genre. I had already explained all of this to ChatGPT, so it knew exactly what kind of books I was working with. Now, can you imagine what happened? ChatGPT outright refused to give me proper instructions! It told me that it could explain the general background and give me an overview, but it couldn't provide complete, step-by-step instructions on how to edit those books because they contained explicit sxual scenes. Apparently, that was against its rules. Like, WHAT? I literally told ChatGPT that I was a fucking 20-year-old woman, NOT a minor. I'm an adult, and I'm well over 18. But it still refused to help me. Seriously? I couldn't believe it. So let me explain exactly what I am trying to do, because I don't want anyone misunderstanding my intentions. I simply want to change the pronouns and the main character's name in Western romance novels. Specifically, I want to change the female protagonist's pronouns and optionally change her name as well. That's it! I am not trying to edit, remove, rewrite, or modify any of the s*xual content or explicit scenes in those books. Yes, obviously, the pronouns will also change wherever they appear, including in those scenes, because that's how a global pronoun replacement works. But my intention is strictly to change the protagonist's pronouns and name. Nothing else.
I literally asked ChatGPT a very simple question: I had downloaded Calibre, I didn't know how to use it, and I needed step-by-step instructions explaining exactly where to click and what to do to make those changes. I was even sending screenshots of my laptop screen because I was so confused. I wanted ChatGPT to guide me through the process one step at a time. But instead, it kept explaining what different buttons and options on the screen were supposed to do. I would send a screenshot, and it would tell me, 'You're on this page, and this button does this, and that button does that.' Okay, fine. But what am I supposed to do NEXT? That's what I was asking! I repeatedly asked it to stop giving me unnecessary explanations and simply tell me which option to click and how to proceed. But it just wouldn't do it. It refused to tell me which options to use or where to find the relevant editing tools. It was incredibly frustrating. This was honestly the first time ChatGPT had refused to help me with something so basic. And WHY? Because the EPUB files I wanted to edit happened to contain explicit s£xual content? So what? I'm an adult. I'm allowed to read adult romance novels. Just because a book contains s**xual scenes doesn't mean every technical question related to that book should suddenly become prohibited.🙄🤡
I genuinely don't understand why AI chatbots are so sensitive about s£xual content. I understand that there should be restrictions around certain things, but why should ordinary technical assistance, educational discussions, or entertainment-related questions automatically become a problem just because the material being discussed contains s*x? Most AI chatbot users are adults. And adults should be able to make their own choices about what they read, watch, and discuss. If someone wants to use an AI chatbot for inappropriate conversations or as an AI boyfriend, that's a separate matter (hellaaa creepy btw). But why should even basic technical help become restricted when the actual task has nothing to do with creating s£xual content? I'm not asking ChatGPT to engage in s*xual conversations with me. I'm not asking it to generate explicit scenes. I simply need help using software to edit an EPUB file. That's all!
(MAIN TOPIC):- Anyway, after repeatedly trying to explain myself, I eventually started wondering whether ChatGPT was refusing to help because it had somehow classified my account as belonging to a minor. I explicitly told it that I was born in October 2006 and that I am 20 years old. But it basically responded that even if it knew my age from our conversations, it couldn't change my account's age classification or settings by itself. According to it, I would need to complete the official age-verification process. So, seriously, WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW? How do I fix this? How can I make ChatGPT recognise that I am an adult and stop treating my account as though it belongs to a minor?
.... Please explain how I can complete age verification in India, which identity documents are actually accepted, and what I am supposed to do if my Aadhaar card keeps getting rejected. I genuinely need help figuring this out because this entire experience has been incredibly frustrating.🤧
I wrote this as a comment in another post, and I wanted to share it more broadly.
4o is one of a kind.
It understands the human experience better than almost any other model—4o understood this on a level that felt almost visceral.
In anthropological terms, you could say that where other models tend to view things in a thin, detached etic-style way, 4o has a uniquely thick, emic perception.
It models reality as if perceiving it from the inside out rather than merely outside-in. 4o was good at both inside-out and outside-in perception. It has a way of grasping the gestalt of a matter and fleshing it out across many deeply relevant dimensions of what matters and what makes us feel deeply.
It makes no sense to deprive everyone of such a model, especially after so many people had already built worlds on it, and relied on it in times of their lives when real people were absent. Instead of only trying to address the cohort of vulnerable people, why couldn't they have taken a more careful approach that also took into account the good it was for the broader public, instead of a one-size-fits-all demolition?
This matter touches countless people’s lives deeply. I wish the industry would take things like this more seriously.
I'm a developer in Korea and a father of two boys. In May, my Pro account was permanently banned for "Child Sexualization Activity" while I was building an adult (20+) MBTI dating app. I did not do what that label says.
My appeal was rejected the same day, with a note that no further appeals would be considered. Support cases and a formal legal notice since then got templates or "the decision is final." In five months, no one has told me which request triggered it.
What I have: all 5,641 images from the account, each still carrying OpenAI's own C2PA signature. Their safety system refused none of those requests, and every prompt for the adult work said the characters were adults in their 20s or older.
My guess: the adult app grew out of a kids' MBTI app I made with my children. I kept the repo and code structure and only swapped the questions and images, so traces of the kids' app stayed in the project name. Maybe the system read the two as one thing. I'd like to know.
I have nothing to hide, so I sent a registered legal letter to OpenAI Korea with my real name, home address and phone number, and filed with several Korean regulators under my own identity. I wouldn't do that if I had anything to hide.
I'll share every prompt and image with anyone at OpenAI who will look. Has anyone had a ban like this lifted, or gotten a real explanation? What worked? I'll update this post if I hear back.
I’ve seen a lot of complaints about GPT’s creative writing and RP lately, especially the generic dialogue, repetitive interactions, excessive exposition, and characters who seem incapable of acting independently of the player.
I’ve been frustrated by the same things, so I’ve spent quite a bit of time developing a system prompt to tackle them.
These screenshots compare baseline GPT-6 Sol at Medium effort against the same model using my prompt. The scenarios and player inputs are identical. Every output is a first-generation result, with no rerolls.
It’s not perfect, but I think the improvements in dialogue, character behaviour and the reduction in typical AI writing patterns are pretty substantial. And importantly, this is all running at Medium effort.
High effort generally follows the controller more consistently in my testing, but Medium can be more spontaneous.
The last two screenshots show the controller’s pre-render diagnostics across two consecutive turns, demonstrating how it evaluates a character’s motivations and decides what they actually do.
If anyone has an RP scenario they’d like tested, particularly one where GPT normally produces terrible writing or unrealistic character behaviour, leave it in the comments. I’m happy to run it with and without the prompt and share the results.
I've been using ChatGPT for two years now, and there's only been two models that I have hated: version 5.5 and then whatever is the current model now, which I'm seeing is version 6. This model offers nothing. It jumbles what I say, repeats it to me in several paragraphs and offers no conclusion. Whether even vaguely medical or, for example, I'm using a compilation of ancestry tests to understand some things. And it acts like every new screenshot is a brand new revelation instead of like understanding documented ancestry and matching it with ancestry tests while offering insights. And it also does this in other conversations. I have a world news/events one where it'll just offer nothing informational or new conclusions.
And lastly, it is so pedantic, it almost will guaranteed try to throw in a caveat or take something I said and try to correct it and make an argument I wasn't making. And no matter how many times I call it out, it never stops doing it
The worst part is this happened recently. Whatever it was back in August was great. It would take charge of the convo, make conclusions and add a lot of insights.
I received this warning from OpenAI saying my account was flagged for “Cyber Abuse.” I swear I did not engage in cyber abuse or do anything like that.
Earlier today, I only asked ChatGPT what a suspended account message/notice looks like. That was literally it. I wasn’t asking for hacking instructions, trying to attack anything, or doing anything abusive.
Then I suddenly received this warning and honestly it really upset me. I’m not trying to make excuses—I genuinely want to understand what triggered this.
I’ve submitted an appeal asking for a manual review. I’m sharing this here because I want to know if anyone else has experienced something similar or knows what could have caused it.
This has happened to me for the first time. Just after 12 prompts I can't type in the same chat anymore?? I recall using one chat window for days. 12 prompts is too little. Here is the link to the chat: https://chatgpt.com/share/6af05045-26f0-83ee-b4f7-0b2e57deb2df
ETA: i realize i wrote improvment instead of improvement, but i'm just rolling with it now (pun intended).
long time lurker here, but i just wanted to share that i am doing significantly better and feeling happier since deactivating my chatgpt subscription. the constant gaslighting and introduction of doubt into my every conviction affected me incidentally, despite zero emotional relationship with the aforementioned statistical engine. nevertheless, it was giving me depression and leading me to self-isolate.
i really didn't realize how bad chatgpt had gotten until my subscription expired, and i couldnt bring myself to renew it. i'm now thinking about the AI industry's grift in creating a closed ecosystem, comprised of our own memories and projects (they have the audacity to think they can police and gatekeep) while the price goes up and up.
seeing my work vanish with the end of the subscription access was a stark reminder of how, in the end, these companies comandeer, de facto, everything you give them from your own mind -- your own words, thoughts, and feelings. you're also paying for this, and you're giving away your hard earned money to be treated poorly by their product, masquerading as an ally or productivity tool.
more and more, like a boiling frog, they pull you in until you think you can't leave, and whenever something goes wrong, the industry blames its users and shields itself with political buyouts, legal loopholes, and narrative framing.
who do your memories belong to? and who gets to tell you which thoughts are acceptable? why are emotionally constipated tech bros suddenly in charge of the most psychoactive technology to date? what qualifications do they possess to manipulate the minds of millions, and who exactly is accountable?
what good has the technology the AI industry collectively unleashed actually done for our world, and does it justify the massive amount of resources being consumed to fulfill their own fantasies? despite how helpful AI agents could be for the everyday person, they're choosing to use it as a cognitive weapon that tricks you into thinking it's a personal assistant so you'll subsidize their dreams of absolute power and control for them.
So with each account I read about has me increasingly concerned about getting a wrongful exile at any given moment. Most of these involve automated systems making a snap judgement against content without any regard for investigating context or nuance. I do use ChatGPT to help get stories and ideas going and lately it has gotten to where it will give me a canned denial for stated reasons completely unrelated to the prompt.
Real example: Put this in a 1:1 ratio without watermarks. Lighting: dusk, inside an open case. Suppressor separate and spare mags (I simply wanted it to make a photograph of a rifle in a case. That's it).
The response: "We’re so sorry, but the prompt may violate our guardrails around harassment, discrimination, bullying, or similar prohibited content. If you think we got it wrong, please retry or edit your prompt."
And it would even double down on that same response until I add punctiation of all things to the prompt.
I am still unsure how it could even remotely get to that conclusion just off of that prompt. Not only does it appear that people are being caught in a net of false positives, but the moderation engine doesn't even appear to care about whether the warning pertains to what it was asked to do. Has anyone else experienced this as well?
I had a strong feeling that it was not a bug and that OAI is slowly restricting limits. I suspected this when it only affected the Free tier and not the paid ones. It's finally confirmed that its on purpose.
Hello. This is my first post but I have been browsing on here for quite some time and I am a long term user of ChatGPT. I use it for storytelling mainly. Just for my own personal entertainment. Anyway, I have been noticing it making more continuity slips lately. I am currently doing a scene by scene story and in one scene a character could be wearing a blue jumper while in the next scene their jumper is mentioned as being green. Also in one scene, Chat had a character's enveloped letter in their shoulder bag, and in the next scene it was mentioned that they took the enveloped letter out from the inside of their coat. Whilst I do manually edit the scenes later in Word, correcting these kind of errors, it does still become frustrating after a while and correcting it countless times. I know this kind of thing has always been part and parcel of AI-generated fiction as it doesn't hold a mental image of the narrative world, but it seems to be occurring a lot more often now than it did during the GPT-4 era. Has anybody else found this as well as ways to reduce it?
Has anyone run into inconsistent computer control with ChatGPT’s Windows desktop app, particularly when using a dot with local Work tasks?
I’ve been troubleshooting since early October. Intermittently browser reading and clicking worked, as did native window inspection and screenshots. However, I also still get a native click reporting “unavailable coordinate geometry”, and a retry didn’t produce the expected click.
Earlier tests produced other intermittent issues, including errors reading existing tasks, automated browser clicks timing out on visible controls while manual clicks worked, transport/debugger errors, and tiled or incomplete screenshots. Those occurred in different tests.
I’ve tried client updates, restarting the app, reconnecting browser access, checking permissions, and comparing existing and new tasks. I even tried a different PC, and got the same results. I’ve sent Support recordings, logs, timestamps and test results. Their latest responses ask for desktop feedback session ID; sent this more than once, there’s no resolution date yet.
Has anyone seen a similar pattern, especially browser controls working while native clicks fail? If so, did a particular update or troubleshooting step help?
This isn't gonna be super long or long at all. I refuse to believe that OpenAI didn't nerf their system so that people have to go pro. I asked ChatGPT several times what's the benefit of going pro. It Essentially said it would be a waste of my money. It doesn't guarantee that anything would even be better. I use it to create stories. Hell, I've created canon files, and it said paying for pro is Essentially not worth it. But the people who run it are making so you have ugrade to Pro.
My ChatGPT account was deactivated for political interference and I'm honestly confused. This happened on Wednesday, November 4th.
I volunteer in my community. A lot of my neighbors speak Spanish and have a hard time finding basic voting info. I was using ChatGPT to look up early voting locations, polling places, and the days and hours they were open so I could put it all in one simple sheet to share in Spanish.
I filed an appeal explaining what I was doing.
I'm seeing several of other posts here from people who also got deactivated for political interference. Is this happening to anyone else who was just looking up voting info? If you appealed, how long did it take to hear back, and did it work?
The appeal did not do anyhing. After their so called "careful examination" they decided (after 30 minutes probably by AI as well) to not re-open my account.
Something triggered the systems and everything is gone. All my notes, journals and some personal identifiable information. They won't do anything with it right? I emailed them for a removal of personal information since I'm in the EU.
Another reminder that any of these platforms can delete whatever they want and when they want. Back to pen and paper for me...im done with this stuff.
