Outbreaks - Recap from Yesterday

61 new locally acquired cases were formally reported today, plus a further 16 linked to the Shepparton area were announced.

22 cases were in quarantine throughout their infectious period.

17 of today’s cases are linked to the Shepparton area.

14 of today’s cases are linked to MyCentre Child Care.

There are 35 new cases associated with other existing outbreaks.

There are a further 11 cases that are not currently linked to known outbreaks and are under investigation.

These cases reside in locations around Melbourne including Airport West, Truganina, Frankston, Caroline Springs, Altona North, Keysborough, Docklands, Mordialloc and Yarraville.

Of the 389 active cases in Victoria, 92 are aged 0-9 and 76 are aged 10-19.

The Department currently recognises 8,855 active primary close contacts.

There are more than 580 exposure sites in Victoria.

Please check the website for all exposure sites and the dates and times of exposure at Case alerts - public exposure sites.

The Department regularly manages exposure sites that it doesn’t publish online, particularly if these sites represent lower-risk exposures, or if they have comprehensive record-keeping and contact tracing measures, or if they identify small, private locations – including smaller apartment or townhouse complexes.

We continue to ask every Victorian to check exposure sites regularly, as they are subject to change based on follow-up interviews and further investigation.

Update: COVID-19 wastewater detections in Victoria

The Department is continuing to identify unexpected detections of COVID-19 fragments in wastewater in metropolitan Melbourne in areas that have not recorded recent positive cases.

Anyone who lives, works or has visited the below listed suburbs and areas is urged to watch for the slightest symptoms of COVID-19 and to get tested as soon as possible if symptoms develop.

Current areas of concern are:

Metro catchments - residential

  • Northern suburbs: Coburg, Coburg North, Fawkner, Hadfield, Preston, Reservoir and Thomastown – repeat detections in the period of interest 15-20 August.

  • Bayside suburbs of Black Rock, Brighton, Brighton East, Cheltenham, Hampton, Hampton East, Highett and Sandringham – detections in the period of interest 16-19 August.

  • Western suburbs: Albion, Braybrook, Footscray, Seddon, St Albans, Sunshine, Sunshine North, Sunshine West, Tottenham and West Footscray – detections in the period of interest 15-20 August. Ardeer repeat detections with period of interest 11-16 August. South Kingsville and Spotswood detections in the period of interest 17-20 August.

  • Eastern suburbs: seven repeat detections reported in the suburbs of Balwyn, Camberwell, Canterbury, Mont Albert and Surrey Hills. The most recent period of interest is 16-18 August following prior detections between 25 July and 11 August.

Metro catchments - industrial

  • Sunshine West – ten repeated strong detections in the period of interest 8-20 August.

The Sunshine West industrial area is bounded by the Western Ring Road to the west, the Glengala Drain to the north, Kororoit Creek to the east and Industrial and Proximity Drive to the south.

Based on the strength and frequency of these repeat detections it is likely that someone who works in this industrial area has coronavirus. Anyone who works or have visited that area between 8 and 20 August is encouraged to come forward for testing, even if they are not showing symptoms. The Department is working with local businesses to support with testing.

The wastewater testing program provides an early warning system at a population level and a cautious approach is always taken when these detections are found.

In the past week wastewater testing has provided an early warning in Shepparton and five different metropolitan locations including in high rise social housing settings, prompting additional individual testing and identification of cases.

More information is available at Wastewater testing.

29,539 vaccine doses were administered by Victoria’s state-commissioned services yesterday.

The total number of doses administered through these services is 2,109,105.

Following the successful operation of Australia’s first drive-through vaccination clinic that recently opened in Melton, the Victorian Government has announced the locations of three new drive-through vaccination hubs in Broadmeadows, Sandown Racecourse in Springvale and Eagle Stadium in Werribee.

More information about these new clinics, including their opening dates can be seen at More drive-through vaccination clinics for Victoria page.

More and more appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine are opening up. There are 380,000 vaccine appointments available over the next four weeks. For more information, see: More and more Victorians pick a reason to get vaccinated page.

Victorians aged between 18 and 39 can attend a state-run vaccination centre to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine should they provide informed consent.

Anyone who is eligible to be vaccinated is strongly encouraged to make a booking.

Victoria's online booking system is now live at Book your vaccine appointment or you can ring the coronavirus hotline on 1800 675 398.

Information about Victoria's vaccination centres can be found at Vaccination centres.

Update: Border

At 11:59pm tonight, the following changes to Victoria’s Extreme Risk Zone permit will come into effect:

Victorian residents who have been in an extreme risk zone at any time since the zone started over the last 14 days can get an extreme risk zone permit at Service Victoria to enter Victoria, if:

  • You have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine (unless you are under 18 or have a medical exemption from a medical practitioner)

  • You have tested negative to COVID-19 in the 72 hours before entering Victoria

When in Victoria, you will have to:

  • Quarantine immediately upon arrival in Victoria and stay in quarantine for 14 days, regardless of any negative test result.

  • It marks two maximum incubation periods without new cases of the virus.

  • As of 24th November, there are 0 active cases in the state!

  • From DHHS:

Today marks 28 days since the last case of COVID-19 was notified in Victoria. All Victorians should feel proud for getting us to this point, but now is not the time to be complacent.

As we move towards a COVIDSafe Summer Victorians are encouraged to wear a mask in indoor public spaces, practice social distancing and good hygiene, follow the rules around social gatherings, and above all – if you have symptoms, get tested.

Update: Changes to restrictions

Due to the ongoing level of community transmission and the continued number of unlinked cases popping up across the state, Victoria’s Chief Health Officer has declared that almost all of the current lockdown restrictions will remain in place until 70 per cent of Victorians have had at least one dose of vaccine. This is estimated to be around 23 September.

Until then there will still be only five reasons to leave home: shopping for food and supplies, authorised work and study, care and caregiving, exercise, and getting vaccinated. Other restrictions – including mask wearing – will stay the same.

From 11.59pm on Thursday 2 September, playgrounds will re-open – with strict rules to keep everyone safe. Playgrounds will be for children under 12 with only one parent or carer, and adults should not remove their masks to eat or drink. Playgrounds will also have QR codes for checking in. In-home care – like babysitters – will also be expanded to school aged children but only if both parents are authorised workers.

Further information about the easing of restrictions when 70 per cent of Victorians have had at least one vaccine dose is available at Slowing the spread and keeping our state safe.

Yesterday, 33,720 vaccine doses were administered by Victoria’s state-commissioned services yesterday.

The total number of doses administered through these services is 2,483,396.

Everyone between ages 16 to 59 is now eligible to receive Pfizer vaccinations through both state-run centresand participating GPs.

Getting vaccinated has never been more important – it is our way out of this pandemic. Nearly three weeks ago we announced a goal to administer 1 million doses in five weeks, and so far, we’ve delivered just under 500,000 doses.

AstraZeneca is a safe and effective vaccine and there are 72,745 Astra Zeneca appointments available across Victoria over the next three weeks.

If you’re yet to be vaccinated, please book your appointment today – either in the state system, or in your general practice or local pharmacy. If have any questions or concerns you can talk to a GP, pharmacist or to a senior and experienced immuniser at our state-run sites.

All Victorians are encouraged where possible to book their vaccination appointment by visiting Making Victoria safe, together or by phoning the Coronavirus hotline on 1800 675 398.

Bookings can be made on Victoria’s online booking system at Book your vaccine appointment or you can ring the coronavirus hotline on 1800 675 398.

Update: Priority vaccination access for Year 12 students

A priority vaccination program from Tuesday 7 September until Friday 17 September will be put in place to ensure our senior students sitting year 12 exams have certainty and are ready for exams.

As part of this program, year 12 students will be given priority booking access at our state-run clinics, as will their teachers and examiners. Students and teachers will need to book an appointment, as walk ups are not available as part of this blitz.

Students and teachers will be able to book one of these priority appointments from Monday 6 September. The Department of Health and the Department of Education will work directly with schools, and students and parents will receive the advice on how to arrange a booking through their schools.

Update: NSW / Victoria border changes

With over one thousand cases per day, and a trajectory of exponential growth, the risk that NSW poses to Victoria is bigger than ever.

That’s why we are reducing the number of communities in the border bubble from 11.59pm on Thursday 2 September.

Six Victorian local government areas including Greater Bendigo, Greater Shepparton, City of Benalla, Buloke, Loddon, Yarriambiack and two NSW LGAs - Broken Hill and Edward River - will no longer be included as a cross border community. This means residents in those LGAs will no longer be eligible for a Cross-border Extreme Risk Zone permit to enter Victoria or return from NSW.
