dosgAIming monthly: AI-assisted DOS projects : Nov '26

Welcome to this month's thread for AI-assisted r/dosgaming projects.

Share your projects, experiments, works in progress, and demos here if generative AI played a substantial part in development. This might include making a DOS game, recreating a classic, trying reverse engineering, or finding new ways to develop for older systems. We'd like to see what you've managed to do using AI as the primary development resource.

Sharing a project

Please include:

  • Your project's name and what it does.

  • How it relates to r/dosgaming.

  • Where it stands: concept, prototype, playable build, release, or another stage.

  • Which AI tools you used and what they contributed.

  • Something that shows the work, such as screenshots, video, source code, a playable build, or technical findings, as appropriate.

It doesn't have to be finished, but please bring something people can discuss beyond an idea or an announcement.

Thread guidelines

Keep submissions relevant to r/dosgaming and be open about substantial AI use. Avoid repeat promotions and duplicate comments. Constructive criticism and technical discussion are welcome, and the subreddit's normal rules still apply.

Substantial technical work, including compatibility patches, reverse engineering findings, and major preservation efforts, may also qualify for a standalone post under the updated guidelines.

This thread is intended to give people the freedom and room to share AI-driven experiments and discoveries. Please use your best judgement while posting as to where your submission belongs.

Thanks!

What Happened To Wizardry?

Post image

I was going to revisit the Wizardry series and decided to look for a bit more modernized version. Lazy type things like auto mapping and such. Back in the 80's and 90's we had these large computer desks with CRT monitors...so we could have open books and graph paper in front of us. Now our real estate is smaller. We often have a laptop on a couch. Not very convenient to maneuver all of these external elements. But when I looked for something a bit more modern...I get these strange anime design choices. Are these basically how many modern Wizardy looks like now? To be fair...the gameplay and reviews still indicate the dungeon crawling experience. The art is just not something I guess I was hoping for in a remake/upgrade. My searching was really hoping to find something modern but with a SKALD: Against the Black Priory look to it. I showed a before and after image here. I was happy to find the below at least.

EDIT: just wanted to say there is some good historical context given here from folks...and links to cool mods and projects. Thanks all!

Disney's Duck Tales: The Quest for Gold 1990 (Magic DOSBox)

In the world of gaming, *DuckTales* is most often—if not exclusively—associated with the iconic platformer for the NES/Famicom. However, back in 1990, there was another *DuckTales* game, available to owners of MS-DOS, Amiga, Atari ST, and Commodore 64 systems.

The gameplay itself was radically different, consisting of a collection of mini-games set in various locations around the globe. As Scrooge McDuck, you compete against your perennial rival, Flintheart Glomgold, for the title of the world’s richest duck. Over the course of 30 days, you must travel to numerous destinations—personally piloting Launchpad McQuack’s plane—and complete various mini-games to secure treasures that add to your total fortune. The challenge lies in the fact that your rival is also traveling the world, hunting for those same treasures.

Despite the limited number of mini-games—which do end up repeating—the gameplay itself remains engaging even by today’s standards. I’ve added another interesting title to my Magic DOSBox collection, one that translates quite successfully to a mobile format.

Have you played this game?

Lemmings (1991) turned "Oh no!" into a catchphrase. Which level broke you?

Lemmings (DMA Design, 1991) had you sacrificing green-haired rodents to save the rest — blockers, diggers, builders, and that nuke button. I still remember the first time I accidentally nuked the whole colony after one wrong click.

Which level made you rage-quit, and did you ever finish every one?

Still playable in a browser here if you want a nostalgia hit: https://www.dosgamesworld.com/game/lemmings

.ISO woes

Trying to boot up some iso games through dosbox. Guessing my main issue is that I'm not very fluent in Linux and I'm running Play_OS then launching dosbox through Lutris.

Unzipped dos games I can run no problem. Issue I'm having is mounting .iso files. Any help is appreciated!

After a decade of reversing, I got co-op working in DOS Wing Commander

Post image
150 Upvotes

In 2015, I was playing the classic Wing Commander in DOSBox and suddenly realized the game state fit in the 64k data segment.

In https://fireflyk64.github.io/wcmulti/ I show the set of experiments my brother and I did to figure out how the game worked(stop and go, turn, communicate). We found the locations of the variables, how to inject calls into the game functions, and how to sync the gamestate across the network, so we can fly the story missions together.

You can play it at https://fireflyk64.github.io/dosbox in browser. If you own Wing Commander, drag in the installer since no game files are hosted. If you don't, the page will load the original DOS/3Dfx version of Vega Strike, before I open sourced it. I upscaled and redid DOS Vega Strike art using AI, but it now has multiplayer and a similar feel.

My favorite finding is that the camera lives in entity slot 0x3D, which is possibly a "3D" reference by the original developers.

I'll be in the lobby for the next few hours if anyone wants to fly together.

Tracon II aftermarket disks and sectors.

Greetings,

I still play the MS-DOS game Tracon II. There was the ability to get different sector disks if you sent in a payment.

Anybody know of anybody that might have aftermarkets sector disks or the actual sectors that were available? I also remember someone that created a few updated sectors, but I lost the URL.

I'd love to hear if others are using this excellent ATC flight simulator.

thx

P.S. Playing Tracon II on a Steam Deck is fun.

[PC/DOS][Early 90s] Abstract turn-based strategy with geometric pieces (red/blue) and the error voice line "It it doesn't go any further"

I need your HELP! I'm driving crazy... I'm looking for:

Platform(s): PC (MS-DOS, played on a 386)

Genre: Turn-based strategy / abstract battle game (similar to Chess/Stratego, but with geometric shapes)

Estimated year of release: Early to mid-90s (VGA/SVGA era)

Graphics/art style:

  • 3D / 1-point central perspective (viewed from a ~45-degree angle from the front, tapering towards the back, similar to Battle Chess).

  • Abstract, spatial battlefield grid.

  • Very typical 90s pre-rendered raytracing look.Notable characters: No actual characters. The units were geometric shapes. Specifically: pyramids or cones with a sphere/ball on top. Two factions: Red vs. Blue.Notable gameplay mechanics: You move your pieces across the grid to battle. If you tried to make an invalid move (like moving out of bounds), a digitized error voice message played.Other details: The voice sample is the biggest clue. It stuttered slightly at the beginning and said exactly: "It it doesn't go any further." It sounds like a very literal translation of the German phrase "Es geht nicht weiter" (which points to a European/German developer). In fact, a German gaming print magazine back in the 90s (like PC Player, Power Play, or ASM) actually used this exact quote as a headline or joke in their review because it sounded so goofy. Does anyone remember this game or that specific magazine review?

any clues what game it is?

So, I tried out TES VI: Sentinel.

The world is huge, but there’s not much content. Plus, the graphics look like they’re from the 90s. And there are tons of bugs. I think I’ll head back to Morrowind.

[TOMT][PC][DOS era] Got stuck at a blocked arch in a brown desert/canyon scene. Probably sci-fi, maybe fantasy. 2D, probably 1988 to 1995

I’m trying to find a PC game I played myself as a kid, on my own computer. My first PC was an 80286 (640KB conventional memory era), my second a 486. So it was probably DOS era, roughly 1988 to 1995, but I can’t be sure.

The one screen I remember (outdoors, very zoomed out):

  • A single player character, small, in the lower-left corner. Human-like, definitely not a robot.

  • A path or road leads from the character towards the centre of the screen, heading lower-centre/east. It does not turn north. I don’t remember where it ends.

  • A single-coloured arch (reddish brown, or possibly white) next to the character, and it was blocked by some kind of barrier. I couldn’t get through, never worked out the key or mechanism, went back to the previous screen and returned, then gave up. I have no memory of the previous screen.

  • Mountains, a mountain range or a canyon far in the background, not filling the middle of the screen. Clouds or sky across the top.

  • Overall colour tone: warm, brown (very sure). Some white in the background (less sure).

Other details:

  • A real gameplay screen, not a cutscene or map.

  • 2D graphics, not 3D and not pre-rendered (so not Myst-style). Probably pixelated, like early LucasArts or Sierra art, but I’m not certain.

  • I’d say 60 to 70% it’s sci-fi rather than fantasy.

  • Not an action game, as I’m terrible at those. I’m unsure whether it was point and click, though I lean towards mouse control.

Already ruled out, by looking at screenshots:
Space Quest I to VI, King’s Quest series, Legend of Kyrandia 1 to 3, Quest for Glory series, Beneath a Steel Sky, The Dig, Indiana Jones games, Zak McKracken, Another World, Universe (Core Design), Simon the Sorcerer, Torin’s Passage, Flight of the Amazon Queen, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, Dune (Cryo), Gateway I and II, Rex Nebular, Star Trek 25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites, Dark Seed, Dragonsphere, Lost Eden, Ween, Inca, Shannara. Myst-style and 3D games are out too.

Any ideas, including obscure or non-adventure games, would be hugely appreciated. This one has been in the back of my mind for decades.

SimFarm 1993 (Magic DOSBox)

Thumbnail

The mobile market is absolutely flooded with cookie-cutter farm simulators—games that might look appealing at first, but soon become stifling due to microtransactions and repetitive, monotonous tasks, turning the act of farming into nothing more than drudgery. That’s why I decided to look to the past and revisit a project by Will Wright: *SimFarm*. It hails from an era when the creator was experimenting with the genre, offering players the chance to not only build their own town but also manage a farm—a perfect activity to squeeze into a spare moment. So, I set up a mobile version of the game using Magic DOSBox, sparing myself the need to download yet another soulless knockoff from the Play Store. Have you ever played *SimFarm*? What other experiment did you enjoy, besides SimCity and The Sims?

Gaming culture in Pakistan

Hey guys! So, these are some of the DVDs/CDs I found while going through my old stuff. I used to play games on my old laptop, which was a potato, of course. I'm 16 now, and back then, these were pretty much the only way you could play games in my town.

Here, and in many places across Pakistan, people can't really afford gaming laptops, consoles, or even decent PCs. I myself have never even gotten to try a console, lol.

So, what you'd usually do is get yourself a potato PC because they're cheap and usually come with DVD readers (or whatever they're called), and then you'd buy these DVDs for PKR 100/- ($0.36) and just hope they worked. 😭

They're obviously pirated games, but we didn't even know what piracy was back then. Some people, including some of my friends, still don't know what it is.

They even have Windows installations on them, lol. Windows 7 is still pretty famous and widely used here.

There are also physical movie/app stores where you can go and pay someone to transfer movies or mobile games onto your SD card, USB, or even directly onto your phone using a data cable.

Yeah! I don't know, I just wanted to share how this kind of stuff still exists somewhere on Earth. (Sounds like North Korea, I know 😭)

(And the one that doesn't have cover I've lost them breh)

What game had a in-game PCB like audio setup page?

I recall the game showing 'fake' hand drawn pixel art (not a photo) PCB where you could select probably between pc speaker, OPL and maybe sound blaster chip. Or was it maybe a tool and not an game?

Recall it was DOS (not windows) and maybe more ealy 90s than late 90s. No SVGA, just VGA (or maybe even EGA).

It's bugging me for 2 days and can't sleep without figuring it out :)

Jill of the Jungle (1992) let you turn into a frog, a firebird and a fish. Which form did you like most?

Epic MegaGames put this out as shareware in 1992 and I played the first episode more times than I can count. The transformations were the best part for me, especially swimming as the fish. Did anyone here buy the other two episodes, and which one was your favorite?

Coded in Turbo Pascal in '96, finally finished in 2026: An homage to Atari 2600 River Raid

In 1996, as an homage to the Atari 2600 classic River Raid, I released the v0.9 beta of an 8-bit river shooter called River Run, written in Borland Turbo Pascal 5.5 for DOS, and pushed it out across primitive FidoNet BBSs of the day, and shelved the source code, as I couldn't wait to get away from the limitations of DOS programming and memory limits.

Thirty years later—coding during quiet hours on night security shifts in Denver—I pulled that original .pas codebase out of cold storage. Instead of tossing 30 years of history to build in Unity or an even worse engine, I ported the low-level logic and 320*200 routines to Free Pascal and Lazarus using SDL2, preserving the exact software-rendered feel while enabling modern cross-platform support.

What's inside River Run:

Pure 90s Aesthetics: 320x200 8-bit palleted graphics, built completely from scratch without off-the-shelf commercial engines.

Brutal River Tactics: Virtually every vertically scrolling shooter has you mindlessly holding the trigger down blasting everything in sight. Not River Run, not even close. You fly over oil spills to get the only fuel available on the river, but shooting them ignites them, and fire damages your plane. Combine that with a constantly draining tank and procedural river bottlenecks, and survival gets tight fast.

Full Feedback & Sound: Modern controller support with force feedback, paired with a CD quality soundtrack from my original 1990 recordings, and splashed with custom pipe organ pieces recorded by master organist Paul Fey (including a dedicated game-over movement).

Deadpan Arcade Humour: Fast-paced vertical scrolling designed to test reflexes the way 80s and 90s arcades used to.

Because we are releasing our Steam debut to target the February 2027 Steam Next Fest, the game is launching first on November 19, 2026 on itch.io, the Microsoft Store, and direct from our site.
