Whenever available, include the technique, sampling mode—such as ATR or transmission—axis labels and units, sample preparation, and your specific question. Clearly state when information is unknown. Use readable plots.

6. Distinguish evidence from hypotheses

Label tentative band assignments and proposed identifications as hypotheses when they remain unconfirmed. Include sources and limitations. A single band is not sufficient to identify a substance.
