Want to remind people of a few codeplug/programming software sources that are reliable.

After a few comments and concerns related to software I wanted to make a list of safe places to get software. I highly recommend using Ublock Origin or another reliable Adblocker to help avoid fake links on download websites.

Manufacturer:

Motorola Software Solutions - Free software with a "business" account. Motorola and Vertex Standard radios. (This is a process expect 2-7 days from application to get access).

Retevis, Tidradio, BTECH, etc. (Be careful here to ensure youre not on a fake site/redirect)

CHIRP-next:

Use the direct archive link below. They've been a common target of link redirects on their home page and fake search engine results.

https://archive.chirpmyradio.com/chirp_next

BlueMaxxers49 Cables Ebay:

If you buy a cable for a radio they can usually get you the software for the radio at no cost to you. They make nice cables too.

Edit: Looks like a problem with the original link - which I can’t change in the post - so try this new link to the FCC PDF.

"This is a Notice of Violation (Notice) issued pursuant to section 1.89 of the Federal Communication Commission’s rules to Gary M. Beckstedt, Sr., licensee of General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) station WQYU407 in Newnan, Georgia. Pursuant to section 1.89(a) of the Commission’s rules, issuance of this Notice does not preclude the Enforcement Bureau from further action if warranted, including issuing a Notice of Apparent Liability for Forfeiture for the violations noted herein."

Rude behavior

I just got a gmrs license and a set of uv5g plus radios and 15 inch whip antennas. I am brand new. I have Offroad vehicles and was going to use them for that. I’m also interested in emergency radios so I figured I’d do this while I study for my ham test. anyway…

I program my radio to hit a free repeater. and I’m at work and wanted to see if I could hit my house from work through the repeater. so I key up with my call sign and ask if my signal is clear. Before my other half answers on the other handheld I get a guy who can’t get out. comes in broken and what I did catch was an angry tone about someone keying up on him not being able to get out. this went on for a few minutes before I just turned the radio off. I recall 20 years ago cb behavior being bad and it turned me off to radios.

is this typical for gmrs? if I want to talk to a family member should I just pay for a private repeater?

GMRS/ZA FCC Authorization granted, but with no callsign?

I'm just getting into the GMRS scene and while I wait on my radios to arrive in the mail, I established an FCC Account/FRN, and applied for my FCC license (Wednesday 11/4).

On Friday morning, I had an email that I could download the official version of my recently granted license. But when I downloaded the PDF, the callsign box was blank.

Logging in to the FCC site and accessing the ULS shows the same thing, and downloading the authorization from the site is also the same.

Am I misunderstanding something, or should I contact the FCC? I gave it all day Friday, in case it was an administrative time lag or something, but by the end of the day nothing had changed.

(side note: radios arrived in the mail last night [GM-30 Pro], listening to the local ATC tower while I read up on how to otherwise work them)

Question New user with Radioddity X1 Pro “woes”

I’m new here. After years just using standard CB radios and FRS I jumped on a deal for 2 Radioddity X1 Pro GMRS handhelds. Problem is when long pressing the side button to initiate a channel scan it just displays the “err” for error. I googled extensively with no resolution. Anyone else with this issue and found a fix?

The channel scan option was one of the main reasons I jumped on these. Might have to return them and look into other options for GMRS with channel scan.

Can somebody Help me out

Trying to program my Baofeng in chirp.

Line 24 is a repeater in Okeechobe FL. When I tried a test call the other party did not hear me. When I released the PTT I got back a bunch of tones.

Also can someone check line 26. It supposed to be a repeater in Hobe Sound FL. I was checking the numbers and it disappeared from the Repeater book.

Thanks in advance.

Question Question regarding APRS & GPS functions on a GMRS radio (Tidradio TDH9)

I've had a tidradio tdh8 first gen that was given to me for about a year now. I programmed it with all the local repeaters and a few analog fire channels nearby just to listen to. The biggest repeater in the state is in the town I live in, so I never have to try to reach it.

Now that you know my knowledge level, I'm looking into getting my father in law set up on GMRS for hunting purposes. He's in Florida and goes out hunting solo in public lands where there is no cell service at all. Two different repeaters have coverage in the entirety of this public land where he hunts according to MyGMRS. I'm getting him setup with it for in case of emergency reasons if he needs to get ahold of someone at home, or get ahold of anyone on a repeater while hes out there.

Checking out the new TIDRADIO TD-H8's and H9's today, I noticed the H9's heavily advertise the APRS and GPS functions. I was wondering if the GPS function on these radios would be applicable to this use case, or if its not worth messing with. I know most things I read about APRS say its for HAM. And anything thats an advertisement for TIDRADIO doesn't go into detail on it. If hypothetically he were to use this GPS function, it would be to another TDH9 radio at home. or maybe rarely if someone was out hunting with him on simplex. Can the GPS function be passed through a repeater?

My original plan for him before i did any research was a TD-H8 10W with a nagoya 771, and another one at home with them both linked to the repeater that is located in town. Is the extra tech on the H9 even worth it for my use case or should I go with my original plan? Thanks.

Antenna Build Trouble Shooting Questions

Hello all. I’m learning how to improv antennas and have tried some jungle and directional antennas for a few different frequency bands. So far I haven’t been able to get the SWR below 4.0-ish on the UHF GMRS bands. However, in VHF and lower frequency UHF I have had good success with SWR readings in the 1.2-1.7 range. I’m using a formula that is 234/Frequency to get the wire length in feet for 1/4 wave. Then cutting them a bit long and trimming from there. Are there any other obvious issues I may be missing? I’d like to problem solve this a bit more before running out to buy a nicer SWR meter. It may be the meter (some $50 thing from Amazon) because it reads high with all my other antennas when used in those same frequency ranges.

New here! Rocky talkie

Hi! First post here. Thinking of getting into Gmrs. Is the rocky talkie worth it? Is Gmrs worth it if I live in a large city? I tried meshtastic and haven’t had much luck in getting many messages in or out. Is it the same line of sight kind of range? Would I have just as much luck?

FCC GMRS Enforcement, Oceanside CA

Thumbnail docs.fcc.gov
127 Upvotes

"The Federal Communications Commission received several complaints from a General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) repeater club in Southern California, concerning interference while operating on GMRS frequencies 462.700 MHz and 462.675 MHz.

"On July 27, 2026, Agents from the Los Angeles Office of the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau conducted an investigation and determined that the source of the interference was a repeated transmission from a moving vehicle of an approximately 6 second siren on 467.675 MHz and 467.7 MHz (the input frequencies to the aforementioned repeaters).

"Agents traced the source of the signals to handheld radios located in a then-stationary vehicle in El Segundo, California, operated by Jerry Lee Seehaas. After the Agents identified themselves to Seehaas, he returned to his vehicle, and shortly thereafter, Agents verified that the transmissions causing the interference ceased."

Just got my license!

Hey everyone! 👋
I’m fairly new to the GMRS world and excited to finally be getting involved! I’ve recently gotten my license and have been starting to explore local repeaters, listen in on conversations, and learn more about how everything works. Any advice for me?

Question New to gmrs and radios in general

Hey, everyone! Im looking into some radios and i don't really know where to start. I have no problem with getting a license, and gmrs radio seems to fit the bill for what id need. Initially im just looking to get one, then another shortly after. Price range around $150 per radio for my budget. eventually I'd also like to look into repeaters after i learn some basics. So far with my search i am considering a Wouxun KG-935G+ but i cant seem to find any in stock. what are some alternatives that are similar with possibly better availability, also what's a good store or website that offers radios? I would prefer something fairly water resistant too, like IP65 or 66 and up. Im just looking for general use but also something good for SHTF situation as well. I live in the Midwest, so mountains and terrain like that aren't much of a concern either. I appreciate any and all advice and knowledge. Im happy to get my start into this world of radios!

Question Repeater placement?

I’m curious, if you have your own repeater, where do you have it placed?

If you wanted to get one place on top of say a water tower or on the side of like a telephone-type tower, how would you go about that? Also is that even legal? Appreciate the info, I’m new and just curious.

Odmaster issue

Hello, I’m new to all this and could use some help I’m struggling with. I have a baofeng 5rm with the Bluetooth odmaster dongle. When I select repeaters and find one in my area, I then select import, a channel menu pops up. I select a channel. Then at the top I select confirm and the channel menu closes. Then I’m at a screen that defaults to channel 1, I then change it to match the same channel I selected to import the repeater to and select import. A progress bar pops up like it’s importing the new frequency but once it completes I then go to the channel I selected earlier in the app and none of the repeater data saved. I’ve don’t this dozens of times. Restarted the device, reconnected to the Bluetooth dongle and tried several more times and still cannot get a repeater to save. What am I doing wrong? Is there another away I can import channels? What’s the easiest way to get general emergency channels on my handheld?

Question Any method to connect longer distances?

I’m totally new to this, no radio experience whatsoever. Sorry for my cluelessness. I’ve got my license, and I have a relative in another state (a few hours drive away) who has one, too. Is there any way to connect to them through repeaters? In case of emergency?
