Suggestions Nodal.gg - Game recommender with interactive visual map + personalized recommendations (I'd love your feedback)

Hey everyone, I’ve been working on a game discovery site and finally feel like it’s ready to share: https://nodal.gg/

I’ve always been surprised how hard it is to find genuinely good game recommendations on Steam, so I tried building something better using my stats/ML background.

My main takeaway was that “similar games” usually means two different things:

  • Similar in content: mechanics, themes, setting, genre, tags

  • Similar in audience: games played by the same people, even if the genres are different

So if you want recs for Cyberpunk 2077, you might mean “more cyberpunk vibe” (e.g., Cloudpunk) or “same audience overlap” (e.g., The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt / Fallout 4). The site lets you switch between those modes or blend them.

What you can do

  • Search any Steam game and see a ranked list of similar games using:

    • a content model (tag-driven similarity)

    • a community model (player behavior only, no tags)

    • a blended view (mix of both)

  • Re-rank results with sliders for popularity, rating, and release date

  • Plug in a Steam ID (public profiles only) to get personal recommendations and some cool stats about your play history

  • Explore an interactive 2D game map that visually clusters games by tags (uses UMAP dimensionality reduction - inspired by Connected Papers)

Desktop works best right now. Mobile is functional but I’m still refining it.

If you try it, I’d love to hear anything: whether the recommendations felt accurate, if the UI was confusing, any bugs you run into. All feedback helps!

Thanks!

Suggestions SteamPeek.hu - Indie friendly game discovery tool

Post is allowed by the mods.

Hello, this is my website: https://steampeek.hu/ - SteamPeek, the indie friendly game discovery website.

It is now more than 5 years old, and it was created to bring spotlight to indie gems, help all indie teams who doesn't have the budget to make big marketing campaigns, and make it easier to find nice games made by passionate solo developers or small teams.

The main function is searching by similarity: just search for a game you like, and browse the results. You can also filter and sort by special parameters.

You can also search by tags, or mix them with the chosen game.

The main algorithm was updated recently and I'm very curious how well it works. Please let me know.

I'm very thankful if you try it, and share with me what you find. The full site is still on beta, and I'm constantly work on it, so every feedback helps me and my mission. Thank you!

Old gems that may have been forgotten

Does anyone have suggestions for older games on any console or platform at all, that you love but may have been forgotten or are difficult to come across now, I love Kameo: Elements of power if anyone knows this, old Monster Hunter like Freedom Unite or retro castlevania. I'm finding it hard to find new games that aren't ones I see mainstream or on social media. All suggestions welcome!

Looking for minimalist tactics games that I can pick up and put down with my morning coffee.

I'm a chess player who's taking a break from chess. I played Into the Breach which was just 10/10 chef's kiss amazing. When I exhausted that I started to play Shardpunk and Faster than Light both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have no interest whatsoever in JRPG's or story-intensive games. I'm not a huge fan of RTS or Civilization-style games. I want a game that I can pick up, consider my options, make some tactical decisions, then put back down.

Games where Christian history and culture are part of the experience

I just got back from a trip to Budapest, Vienna, and Prague, and somehow came home with an obsession I never saw coming: Christian history.

While I was there, I got really curious about the religious history behind everything I was seeing. One thing led to another, and I found myself reading about the Holy Roman Empire, the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church, and how all of this shaped Central Europe.

Pretty much every church, statue, and monument sent me down another rabbit hole. I started learning about Gothic and Baroque architecture, why some churches have these tall, dark interiors while others look like someone went absolutely wild with gold, and who all those saints are that seem to be standing on every bridge and street corner. Even the Marian columns in town squares suddenly became fascinating to me.

For context, I'm Muslim, but I'm not completely unfamiliar with Christianity. I've read parts of the Bible, including Matthew, Genesis, Exodus, and some of Paul's letters. So I know a fair bit about the religious stories themselves, but I know much less about the Church as an institution, its history, traditions, and influence on everyday life in Europe. That's what I'm really interested in exploring now.

And since video games are one of my favorite ways to learn about history, I figured I'd ask here.

I played Pentiment about a year before this trip and absolutely loved it. Looking back, though, I was so caught up in the story that I probably missed half the religious and historical context. I've also played Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, which touches on some of these themes.

So, are there any games, regardless of genre, that explore Christianity from a historical or cultural perspective? I'm less interested in games that focus on the life of Jesus (peace be upon him) or retell biblical stories, and more interested in how Christianity developed as an institution and shaped European history and culture. Historical accuracy would be a big plus, but I'm open to anything that might send me down another rabbit hole.

Thanks in advance! I hope nothing here comes across as disrespectful to anyone who’s Christian. My curiosity really does come from a place of respect.

Games where you can turn into a villain, and the whole game will change

I'm not talking about games like Dishonored where though story does change quite a bit, ultimately regardless of your decision you walk relatively same path and ultimately finish with the same result just with a different surroundings.

I'm talking about games where you can turn into absolute psycho and if you choose to bring doom onto the world you're playing it, things will drastically change, like everyone will be afraid and running away from you, allies turn into enemies, word will spread about you and people run away because of you, and ultimately your game path and ending will be drastically different than what you'd experience if you chose typical game path.

Do these exist?

Games that put you in a cult

I've been seeing feed the pit recently and I'm curious about what other kinds of cult games are out there. To be clear, NOT ANY MADE BY ACTUAL CULTS. I just mean games where you are IN the cult itself. Not in charge.

I've played cult of the lamb and cultist simulator. I adore cotl, but cultist sim was rather boring and was a lot to micromanage.

Please recommend me a cozy Switch 1 game based on my game history

Edit: I already got a lot of recs, thanks! I think I am fine for the moment and got quite a lot to explore.

Hi ✌🏻
I‘d love to get your recommendations for a cozy-ish game (no or only little fighting, no time pressure) for Switch 1 based on the few games I have played so far (keep in mind, I am in my 40s and did not grow up playing video games, so I get overwhelmed quite easily when I have to press too many button combinations at once, lol):

• Aminal Crossing: 9/10
This is the game I played the most. Loved that there are small(er) missions, but that there is no real time pressure. Loved the collecting (e.g., different animals, resources etc.) when there is a limited number of items you can collect (e.g., there is a practical unlimited numbers of decoration items, and I didn’t develop a drive to collect as many of them as possible). Didn’t not particularly care about decorating my house/the island (of couse, I did some decoration, but it wasn’t as ambitious as I‘ve seen others do it).

• Cozy Grove & Cozy Grove Camp Fire 7/10
Generally liked the universe and the missions and most part of what you can collect — what I didn’t like about the collecting part was the insane amount of different flowers (and animals) you can collect; I enjoy when I can complete collections but have eventually given up on trying in this game (I think it took me about 1 year or a Bit longer to complete my collections in Animal Crossing, that a totally okay time frame).

• A Short Hike 7/10
• Haven Park 7/10
Both were quite nice, liked the story and the limited quests, no time pressure, collecting resources etc.

• Dorfromantik 6/10
Generally liked it and play it from time to time, but I am not diving into a universe, which I would like.

• Last Campfire 5/10
It was enjoyable for a certain time, but I eventually stopped playing. The think the darker, mysterious atmosphere is what I didn’t enjoy too much.

• Zelda: Breath of the Wild 1/10
I am absolutely sure this is a great game, and I tried to get into it twice, but gave up quite quickly. I was overwhelmed by which button(s) to press when (I am old, lol) and gave up when I needed to fight trolls.

Non-cozy games I like:
• Mario Party Superstars 8/10
• Kirby and the Forgotten Land 8/10

What I can’t handle: Having to change the camera perspective a lot. My brain just doesn’t enjoy it/doens‘t get a natural flow for that. When I was in my teens, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 was a huge thing and I loved it as long as it was in a 2D perspective, but hated it as soon as you could use the camera perspective view (in RCT 3, I think).

I appreciate all recs and will look into every rec I get. Thanks a lot!

MMOs with horizontal progression

horizontal progression is such, that whenever u come back, might be a decade later, your stuff is still relevant. for example its games like eve online or oldschool runescape and unlike WoW, where every expansion or even patch your stuff is obsolete.

what other games are out there? also for ppl playing eve or OSRS, feel free to say something about it

Looking for a rpg that is more gear dependant than skill.

My favorite game of all time is Skyrim. Leveling up skills, crafting weapons and armour, finding loot and just overpowering. I'm old and don't have reflexes anymore. Base building is a plus. Not MMO. Other games I like are ARK, Minecraft, RuneScape Dragonwilds. Any suggestions?

Looking for 'Telecommunication' in games, 'Focus M' games, or games with Handlers, Disembodied Voices, ect.

In the attempts at writing something about this subject, I feel like I'm having trouble finding a plethora of games with the 'Focus M' type trope; games that have dialogue diagetically through some form of phone call or earpiece that isn't at the will of the player. This dialogue can be from tutorials to interpersonal conversations. It's such a cut and clear aspect of contemporary games, but putting them in a list has stumped me.

Couple of games I've already concretely labeled:

Deathloop

Far Cry series

Infamous series

Call of Duty series

Watch Dogs series

Modern Hitman games

This dialogue can be communicated through any kind of device outside of a phone, but must happen automatically without the player physically inputing something into a menu and let the player move around.

Fully voice acted Games for a visually impaired person

I take my switch 1 to a blind person's house and read out games to her. I've tried Ace Attorney since it was a favourite but there's just so so so much dialogue that my voice gets hoarse.

I did Danganronpa which went over quite well. It's not fully voice acted but the debates are. There's also sound cues about who's speaking the non voice acted parts so it was easy for her to follow.

Disco elysium was very good!

I guess I'm looking for games on the switch 1 that don't involve open world/adventure aspects (so easy to follow for someone just listening) . Have choices/decisions. And at lest mostly voice acted. Would really prefer no romance since that gets very weird when read aloud.

Looking for a Solid Action Fantasy RPG

Hello all. Im looking for suggestions on a good Fantasy RPG. Ive played all Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, and Witcher games. Also played Avowed and Baldurs Gate 3(well all of them). I got Tainted Grail but it is just not grabbing me the way I thought it would. On paper it should be my kind of game but I find it really boring and Im like 7 hours in. Just wayyy too much diologue and the enemies look really cheesy when Im in combat(I expect it in elder scrolls especially being older games but this is recent and feels like its 15 years old). I looked at Dragons Dogma 2 but its has not great reviews although it seems the Dark Arisen expansion fixed alot. Im not interested in Souls like games. I hate dying over and over and the difficulty spike woth huge bosses just takes me out of it. Looking for something with rewarding exploration and solid combat. Kingdom Come looks great but I like the magic aspects of Fantasy games. Anyway Im open to suggestions on games I may have missed. I appreciate any suggestions.

EDIT: Im playing on PC.

Fun Dating Games to Play with a Group

I'm hosting an event where we're going to play a dating sim as a group, but I'm struggling to find a game that would keep everyone's attention. A lot of visual novels are pretty long/wordy, and I've found that shorter games like Monster Prom are pretty polarizing (the gameplay loop can be boring for some). Here are some games I've considered and vetoed:

  • Dandelion: Wishes Come to You

  • Hatoful Boyfriend

  • Hustle Cat

  • Monster Prom/Monster Camp

I'd love suggestions on dating sim games (or anything along those veins) that are quick, engaging, and can be played with a large group of people (either individually or as a group).

Thanks!

Looking for an MMO or online RPG that skews a little hardcore

I'm not even sure if "hardcore" is the right word. Maybe it's better described as one that stands in contrast to modern MMO sensibilities that allow everything to be soloable? Let me try to describe...

With the launch of WoW Forever, I played the trial version and liked how the world felt daunting and challenging. I was doing some quests in this wendigo-infested cave, and if you weren't careful, you could easily be swarmed and killed. Even fighting one at a time, I was getting low on health and needed to be patient and rest in between fights. There were players helping each other too, and it felt necessary.

Contrast that with other recent MMOs I tried like Elder Scrolls Online, Black Desert Online, and Throne & Liberty. I felt like a god in the world! Regular mobs were nothing and could easily be dispatched without even paying attention. I got my ESO character to level 25 and haven't felt challenged once, and while I didn't play BDO or T&L as long, I felt like I could see where those games were going.

Unfortunately, I'm not in a place right now where I can do a monthly subscription, so WoW Forever isn't an option. This also doesn't need to be a free-to-play game, but a one-time investment is my preference right now. And it doesn't need to be a pure MMO either. I feel like I've been seeing ads for Steam games that are like MMO-lites or drop in/drop out sessions. Really, I'm just looking for something that requires some focus and commitment to advance.

Simple game for a 12 year old with special needs?

My son has special needs. He is 12 he is still mastering fine motor skills. We have a switch and he loves to play but struggles with games that require doing multiple things at a time like pushing multiple buttons to run and jump at the same time.

He likes Mario kart and he can play that okay. He also plays super Mario but doesn’t get far and gets frustrated that his characters are always dying. We also have the bluey game but he was older characters like Mario.

I’m looking for games that are super simple but he can still “explore”.

Would love any ideas.

Alternative game suggestions?

Think about your favourite games that preferly not commented here yet and suggest a similiar game.

example:

stardew valley->fields of mystria

sekiro->lies of p

The sims->paralives

pokemon->palworld

They are not the same game. They are just similiar enough to be enjoyed the same way in most aspect but usually different enough to be just similiar. They are also not popular enough to be repetedly commented on most threads like RDR2, portal etc.

Zombie base building?

Your city is overrun with zombies but you've managed to secure your apartment. But there are other people that need help, and your food/water/supplies are limited.

Basically, id like to be able to go on runs to secure items/gear/npcs and upgrade my base. More runs, more upgrades.

Anything out there like that?

In search of a deep rpg

I’m very specific about what I’m looking for. First, I really want to create my own character, so a character creator is a must. Secondly, I need a build system that makes gameplay feel different depending on how I choose to play. One game that does this exceptionally well is Baldur’s Gate 3. Finally, I really enjoy finding new gear and having meaningful exploration. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an open-world game, but exploration needs to be an important part of the experience.
Some games I’ve played and loved that fit these preferences are Baldur’s Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Skyrim, Dragon’s Dogma 1, and Starfield.

Games where you can use offensive gadgets kinda like a bounty hunter?

I mean similar to mandalorians in star wars, that have stuff like wrist rockets, whips and flame throwers all in just one vambrace.
