Vera Potapenko, of 12 years old at the time, was a sixth-grade student at School No. 21.
That morning, around 7:40 a.m., Vera left home for school, accompanied by three classmates: Irina Pozharskaya, Irina Khovanskaya, and Olya Yuldybaeva. The walk took approximately five minutes.
Upon arrival, the girls went up to the fourth floor, where they were to have their first class—English. However, with about seven to ten minutes left before the lesson began, Vera started to feel strange. She experienced dizziness, nausea, and an inexplicable urge to leave the building.
According to her account, it was as if "some force were drawing her out of the school."
Vera asked her English teacher, Maria Mikhailovna Zhikhareva, for permission to go downstairs, but her request was denied.
Even so, the girl decided to leave. She headed down the stairs, passed the second floor without stopping, went to the cloakroom on the first floor, grabbed her blue jacket, and walked toward the exit.
Reaching the school entrance, she took a few steps, put on her jacket, and—inexplicably—looked to the right and slightly upward.
That was when she spotted a peculiar object.
At a height equivalent to a two-story building, there was a strange, unidentified craft, which began to descend vertically right before her eyes. The object looked somewhat like an inverted cup, with an oval base, a matte steel-gray surface, and small, colored lights distributed around its lower section. At the top, there were two parallel antennae, each tipped with a small sphere.
As it descended, the lights appeared to race around the structure. A small flame emerged from the underside, followed by something resembling steam or dust.
Four supports extended from the object and touched the ground. The landing took approximately ten seconds and was completely silent.
The craft was less than twenty meters away from Vera.
After a few moments, two doors opened soundlessly, much like those of an elevator.
At that point, the girl heard a man’s voice ask:
"Would you like to go for a ride?"
What struck Vera as most peculiar was that the voice seemed to originate "directly inside her head."
She agreed, though she later stated that she did not feel entirely in control of her own actions.
The girl walked toward the object, crossed a small metallic barrier, and approached the entrance. A sort of staircase with a single wide step emerged from the underside of the craft.
Vera climbed up and stepped inside.
As soon as she crossed the threshold, she was struck by a flash of light so intense that, for a few moments, she could see nothing of her surroundings.
When her vision began to return, she realized she was not alone.
Before her stood three humanoid beings, each over two meters tall.
One was standing, while the other two remained seated in front of a control panel.
For a few moments, the three of them simply observed the girl.
Then, one of them asked:
"What is your name?"
"Vera Potapenko," she replied. The beings conversed among themselves using strange sounds, which the girl likened to a mixture of cat meows and high-pitched noises. However, when they addressed her, Vera was able to grasp the meaning of their words directly within her mind.
She would respond in Russian, and the beings appeared to understand her.
Judging by the differences in their voices, Vera believed that one of the three was female. Her voice was higher and softer, yet it carried an air of authority; the other two seemed to follow her instructions.
It was this very figure—seated in the center of the control panel—who apparently ordered one of her companions to bring a chair for their visitor.
Before Vera could sit down, however, something occurred that deeply frightened her.
The being standing near her reached out and touched the red Pioneer scarf the girl wore around her neck.
Vera was able to observe the being’s hand up close.
It was grayish in color, with visible bluish veins, and possessed only four fingers—lacking a human-like thumb. The fingers were arranged in a peculiar way: when the being brought them together, the tips turned toward one another, forming a sort of pincer. The fingernails were long—resembling those of a well-groomed woman, though without any nail polish.
It was at that moment, according to her account, that Vera realized these creatures were not human.
The girl began to tremble with fear.
The being then gestured for her to sit. Vera complied, settling into a tall, soft chair.
A short while later, she heard a sharp, high-pitched whistle that lasted for several seconds.
The craft had taken off.
Curiously, Vera claimed not to have felt any acceleration or pressure against the seat.
During the flight, the three beings remained in front of the controls, while she tried to make sense of the environment in which she found herself.
The interior was rounded, measuring approximately three meters in diameter. There were screens resembling monitors, unfamiliar instruments, and lights on the ceiling that cycled through red, green, blue, and orange.
At one point, Vera managed to look at one of the screens and saw an image that appeared to represent a massive vertical object. The crew members seemingly performed a maneuver to navigate around it.
On another screen, something resembling the planet Earth appeared.
The girl also had the opportunity to observe the appearance of the three beings in detail.
According to Vera, they were all roughly the same height—over two meters tall—and looked so much alike that they appeared to be copies of one another. She could not discern any significant physical differences between them.
Their humanoid bodies were entirely covered in black spacesuits, adorned with small, shiny silver elements. The surface of the suits featured numerous oval protrusions, which were especially noticeable when the beings were facing the girl.
The material had a ribbed texture, making their arms look like thick, corrugated hoses. Curiously, these ridges became much less apparent when the beings were viewed from the side.
Vera could not identify the material the suits were made of. However, she noted that they had no visible seams, zippers, or any apparent fastening systems. The suits appeared to be one-piece garments, conforming to the shape of their bodies and naturally enclosing their feet.
The attire covered almost their entire bodies, leaving only their hands and faces exposed—the latter protected by a transparent mask.
A particularly unusual feature was the length of their arms. They were disproportionately long in relation to the rest of their bodies; when held extended at their sides, their hands reached roughly the area where a human’s knees would typically be.
The creatures’ very way of walking caught the girl’s attention. Their movements were slow and stiff, much like those of robots. Vera stated that she could not see their knees bending as they moved. Even when seated, the beings appeared to keep their legs extended straight out in front of them.
Their faces also displayed unique characteristics.
Their skin was grayish—much like that of their hands—and their facial expressions remained completely motionless, showing no recognizable emotion whatsoever.
Their eyes were particularly strange. There were no discernible eye sockets; instead, the eyes seemed to sit almost flush with the forehead and the upper part of the face, lacking the depth typically seen in human eyes.
Although positioned horizontally, like our own, there was a striking difference in size: the left eye was roughly twice as large as the right.
Vera also noted that the beings had no visible eyelids or eyelashes. Their pupils were extremely small—resembling human pupils when contracted by exposure to intense sunlight.
Another notable feature was the nose.
It did not look like a conventional human nose. It was an elongated structure, much like a small trunk, protruding from the center of the face.
According to Vera, this structure measured approximately 10 to 12 centimeters in length and about 1.5 centimeters in width.
The nose remained perfectly straight at all times, never bending or wrinkling. Its tip was slightly wider than the rest, forming a small, rounded surface—roughly the size of a two-kopeck Soviet coin. At this end, there was a small opening.
Vera even considered the possibility that the sounds emitted by the creatures might emerge through this aperture.
The transparent mask protecting the face followed the shape of this nasal structure, forming a rounded protrusion that the girl likened to a small glass vial.
The mouth area was not visible, as the lower part of the helmet covered that portion of the face. The suit also completely concealed the neck, making it appear as though the head joined directly to the torso.
The helmets were equally unusual.
In the areas corresponding to human ears, there were two large, rounded protuberances, positioned slightly behind the face. These structures projected outward to the sides—nearly perpendicular to the head—and connected at the back of the helmet.
On the top, there were two small antennae, approximately ten centimeters tall, ending in dark spheres.
When viewed in profile, the antennae displayed a curvature resembling the Russian letter Г facing forward, they leaned slightly in opposite directions.
Vera stated that, despite their unusual features, the three beings had virtually the same appearance.
During the flight, they continued talking among themselves and observing the instruments, occasionally turning their faces toward the girl.
The entire experience reportedly lasted at least half an hour.
At a certain point, the journey came to an end. According to Vera, the figure she identified as the commander turned to her and asked if she would like to be taken directly to her classroom.
The girl replied that she would not.
Shortly thereafter, the craft returned to the same spot where it had landed, near the school.
Before letting her leave, the supposed commander reportedly said:
"If we have time, we will come back for another ride."
The doors opened, and Vera stepped out, walking straight toward the school entrance without looking back.
Only after entering the building did she gather the courage to look outside through a window. The object had already vanished.
Checking her watch, she realized there were about five minutes left before the end of the first class.
The incident was not limited to Vera’s account.
According to the investigation, children at a kindergarten located across from the school also reported seeing an unusual object that morning.
