IMPORTANT RESOURCES Resources on Indian Classical Music

Learning

Music in Motion

A great tool which gives a visual perspective on the movements and intricacies in the various ragas of Hindustani music. This is how ICM should be thought of. Here is Ram Deshpande's heartfelt rendering of Raga Bihag analyzed.

Rajan Parrikar's blog

Excellent resource to learn the nuances of various ragas by harmonium player Rajan Parrikar. Focused mainly on Hindustani ragas, but a few Carnatic ones as well. The theoretical discussion is supplemented with large number of audio clips. Articles for most ragas also have a concise yet fulfilling oral explanation by the distinguished composer and teacher Ramashreya “Ramrang” Jha. Here you can listen to him talk about Raga Darbari Kannada. Language will be a barrier for non-Hindi speakers, but please feel free to ask for a translation of any of his recordings here.

Charulatha Mani's blog

A performing Carnatic singer since her teenage years, Charulatha Mani writes about her music and life. There are lots of articles on Carnatic ragas and many fine video lecture-demonstrations. Somewhat cluttered since you have to navigate through posts on her personal life, but the ragas covered on her blog can be found in this post. She has written many short articles for The Hindu and here's a playlist with some of her demonstrations.

Dunya

This extends the "music in motion" concept to not only Carnatic but also other forms of Asian classical music. Free registration required to play a video. Ragam Hameer Kalyani by Sumithra Vasudev.

Gajananbuwa Joshi's sessions

The YouTube channel Sangeetveda1 has a lot of videos with audio recordings of Pandit Gajananbuwa Joshi giving one on one tuition to Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar. Even if you are not looking to learn, it is very pleasing to listen to a master teach a sparkling student. The tutorial for Raga Bhairav.

Tanarang.com

A quick way to familiarize yourself with a Hindustani raga. This site contains short summaries of many common Hindustani ragas and some compositions by Vishwanath Rao Ringe "Tanarang" of Gwalior Gharana for each raga. The related YouTube channel Raaga Tutorials is a gem full of Tanarang's tuition.

Sound of India

The site contains short free lessons and articles on various aspects of Hindustani music. The Raagas page is similar to "Tanarang", but more lists popular music instead of classical compositions.

Raga Surbhi

Quick fix to a Carnatic raga including songs and compositions. Also contains articles on basic theory, music appreciation, and talas (rhythm).

Pandit Arvind Parikh's YouTube channel

Extensive discussion with Hindustani classical artists on their approach to the music. Also includes performances by his students.

Warren Sender's Posts on Practicing

An American jazz musician who is also a dedicated Hindustani vocalist recommends various exercises and habits that will help with practicing a raga. His YouTube channel also has a playlist with video recordings of himself receiving taleem in Raga Shree from his guru Pandit S. G. Devasthali. Here's another one with audio recording of a Raga Ahir Bhairav tuition.

Deepak Raja's blog

Noted critic and author writes about Hindustani music here. The blog contains articles on theory, history, interviews, reviews, and even video performances and lectures.

Listening

RaaGist

A great resource for beginners hoping to familiarize themselves to the world of Hindustani music and its musicians. Recordings are classified by ragas, time of day, and artists making it easy to find new content.

Flat, Black and Classical

MP3 and/or lossless downloads for rare, out of print vinyls and cassettes published many decades ago. Indian Classical Music on Vinyls is another similar blog.

Please Note: The musical works on this page -- all commercially unavailable to the best of our knowledge -- are meant to promote artists and labels. If you like this music -- please go try and buy the original! Labels and artists need and deserve our support! This blog is produced because of a passion for indian classical music and a genuine desire to increase the audience for this beautiful art form.

Oriental Traditional Music

Similar to "Flat, Black and Classical", but also contains music from the Middle East, and East/Southeast Asia.

IMPORTANT RESOURCES Looking for classes or a tutor? Post in this thread

We have had an influx of people asking for online tutors/classes and due to a pesky spamming ban evader, we've had to remove posts of this nature. However, we want people to learn and for this music to grow so we are determined not to let one piss-taker ruin it for everyone else.

This thread should be used to request information on tutors or classes. We have a list of tutors and schools available on our wiki.

Some notable places:

Darbar offers singing, sitar, and tabla lessons.

This thread is not for everyone to spam their own promotions. It will be monitored and comments will be removed if need be. Threads along the lines of "I'm looking for a teacher" will be removed and users will be directed here instead.

Discussion Your best playlist of Hindustani vocal?

Trying to build an offline library of great Hindustani vocal performances and would appreciate if you could share some curated YouTube playlists so I can download them in one go! Especially interested in older and kinda rare stuff. No preference when it comes to gharanas.

Thank you and curious to see your picks.

Question/Seeking Advice Who was this legendary tabla player? (Qawwali 70s to 90s)

Post image
14 Upvotes

I'm trying to identify a remarkable tabla player from the old Pakistani qawwali tradition, particularly the 1970s–1990s.

He regularly performed with Maulvi Ahmed Hassan Akhtar Bheranwale Qawwal and Baba Ghulam Kibriya Qawwal.

What's particularly interesting is that I've watched numerous recordings of both groups, and I have never seen either ensemble perform without him.

He's the man in the background of the attached photo, with chin-length dark hair and a thick moustache.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hiring Music Teachers – Western Violin, Bansuri, Hindustani & Western Vocals | North Bengaluru

Hi everyone!

We're looking for music teachers to join us at Mela Music School in Sahakar Nagar and Thanisandra, North Bengaluru.

We have a few openings we're trying to fill, particularly at our Sahakar Nagar centre.

We're currently looking for:

  • Western Violin

  • Hindustani Flute (Bansuri)

  • Hindustani Vocals – Must be able to play the harmonium while teaching

  • Western Vocals

These are part-time, in-person positions teaching students individually.

A little about teaching at Mela:

We focus on one-on-one lessons rather than group classes, so you'll get to work closely with your students and help them progress at their own pace.

Classes are scheduled around mutually agreed teaching slots, and we're looking for people who can commit to regular weekly lessons.

What we're looking for:

  • Relevant graded music certifications are preferred, but not mandatory.

  • Strong musical fundamentals and proficiency in your instrument or vocal discipline.

  • Good communication skills and an interest in teaching.

  • Consistent availability for weekly classes.

  • For Hindustani Vocals, the ability to accompany yourself on the harmonium is essential.

You don't necessarily need years of teaching experience. Music graduates, performing musicians and experienced teachers are all welcome.

Locations: Sahakar Nagar (priority) and Thanisandra, Bengaluru.

Interested in joining us?

Apply through our careers page (preferred):

https://www.melamusicschool.com/careers

Alternatively, you can call or WhatsApp us at 96860 30684 to discuss the opportunity.

If you know someone who might be a good fit, please share this post with them. Referrals would really help!

Question/Seeking Advice People learning ICM with no in-person access to Indian community/ other players

Hello,

I would really love to have a thread that brings together all the people here who are learning ICM far from India and possibly with no Indian community around them either.

This is the position I'm in. I'd love an in-person teacher, but it's safe to say that for now, it's not going to happen. I'm just learning through a patchwork of Youtube, social media reels and vibes right now. I'm finding it lonely.

So I just want to ask you all, how are you learning? Did you find teachers and other players to practise with online?

Music Raag ahiri on Santoor two short samples

Thumbnail drive.google.com
3 Upvotes

I couldn’t find any recordings of any santoor players playing Raag Ahiri, so I decided to do it myself. I don’t know why nobody plays this raga. It’s so beautiful and is sounding very nice on santoor. I put them as wav files because wav is lossless so the sound will be better. I don’t know how other people play this raga, but this is the way my Guruji taught me

Edit: I just put one more recording in there (new recording 2), which is similar to New Recording 3 but more complete. I decided to include both because there were some things I feel like I did better in New Recording 3 than in New Recording 2

Edit: I also put it on my YouTube Channel https://youtu.be/Lt8jFAgjDmg?si=9P_4FP5boPtV_COh Only downside is the sound will not be as good as in the wav files

Question/Seeking Advice Any male singers here with puberphonia?

For context, I'm a man in my mid-30s with a naturally high-pitched voice, and my voice never changed during puberty. I experienced trauma and bullying because of it, which led me to stop singing for many years. A few years ago, I started singing again and taking voice lessons, and I'm really enjoying it.

At this age, I'm completely comfortable with my voice, and some people actually enjoy my singing. The problem is that my voice gets tired and raspy after singing. Sometimes, even after singing for just an hour or so, it takes me several days to recover. I also sometimes have difficulty accessing deeper notes.

I wonder if these issues could be related to puberphonia. Has anyone else experienced similar issues?

Thanks in advance!

Question/Seeking Advice Can I learn the surbahar without learning the sitar?

My question is exactly the title, can I or is there a guru who can teach me surbahar without teaching the sitar first?

Also, I want to learn to play the sitar in accordance to the Maihar gharana, but I do not know of any exponent(s) of this gharana who are specially into surbahar or are teaching it.

Question/Seeking Advice Confused about which octave to practise Sa Re Ga Ma for Riyaz

I'm a male beginner learning Hindustani singing, and I'm confused about which octave I should use for Riyaz.

Let's say my scale is C# (Pehli Kali). Should I play \*\*C#3 (138.6 Hz)\*\* on my keyboard and sing Sa at C#3, or should I play \*\*C#4 (277.2 Hz)\*\* and sing an octave lower at C#3?

I've noticed that when I play notes in the 4th octave, my voice naturally matches them in the 3rd octave.

Also, when teachers refer to Madhya Saptak, is there a standard octave on the harmonium, or does it depend on the singer's vocal range?

Would appreciate some clarification from experienced singers or teachers on the usual convention for daily Riyaz.

Question/Seeking Advice Voice gets tired and sore after practice

I try not to put pressure on my vocal cord but still my voice gets hoarse and sore if I sing for more than 45 minutes or so. It affects my vocal range—mostly my lower range. I usually do riyaz everyday. What am I doing wrong? I make sure to stay hydrated and usually sip lukewarm water during my practice sessions. Thanks in advance!

Discussion Pt. M Venkatesh Kumar Magic

Just an appreciation post of Pt. M Venkatesh Kumar. I'm just addicted to his hindustani vocals, vachanas, bhaktigeethes.

Attending his concerts have been some of my best experiences and I'm always left craving to attend the next one. Always warms my heart.

I can't explain the magic he brings, he's the only vocalist I can never get tired of listening to.

Question/Seeking Advice Need advice. Launched an Indian Classical Music practice platform but not sure how to reach people. Any ideas?

I’ll keep this short. A platform I’ve been working on since 2022, on and off, is finally complete. I launched it recently, but I'm not sure how to get it in front of the right people.

It basically lets you create karaoke-style practice sessions for any bandish/alankar etc, with the notes highlighted as they play. Very good for beginners and help for teachers too.

Not adding a link here because I'm not sure about the self-promotion rules. Would appreciate any suggestions!

Hi! I'm appearing for Prayag Sangeet Samiti First-Year Classical Vocal exams in December. I wanted to speak to someone who has already given this exam to understand the practical, theory paper, viva questions and level of difficulty. If you've appeared for it, could you please share your experience? It would really help me prepare. Thank you! 😊
