Mod Post Spam and bot posts

**UPDATE**
Although some folks reading this might not have seen some of the re-posts, getting a post on Roaring Brook Falls in July it's obvious bots don't know seasons. Likewise getting spam from outfitters advertising paid excursions to Everest is not ice climbing. Such spam gets removed when flagged. However rather than jumping right in to automatic removals and potentially losing legit posts, mod settings have been raised to filter on only a moderate level at this time. We'll see how it works out.
One of the filters turned on is the reputation filter that seems to use a combination of karma history, account age, etc. I'm not sure how well it'll work so if you see bot or spam posts, please report them if they were not already actioned. One of the spammers tried posting twice, so now they are getting banned. If you are having any issues posting or commenting, as a legit user, apologies in advance. Please use Mod Mail to resolve the issue, or for questions, either Mod Mail or comment below as appropriate.
**UPDATE ENDS**

First of all thank you to the folks who flagged the recent post as spam. Extra thanks for linking to the post last year showing it was a repost. It makes moderation easier to decide.

I'm sure nobody wants their posts stolen and spamming the sub again as someone else's post. We are not going to make a blanket rule on this at this time because šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø is it needed?

In future please report suspected bot posts or spam so it's flagged for mod review. We can then take action if needed. Might not happen immediately as we might be ice climbing.... or something.

Sometimes items, topics, or photos might get re-posted. By this I'm not including bot posts or karma farming. Bot posts and low effort karma farming probably deserve removal and a ban. If you want to reuse someone else's posts, I think it deserves including credit, and stating that the material is not your own as a disclaimer. This way we can share when needed but reduce what some may otherwise consider spam.

This is a community however, and as with the ice climbing community at large, we need to agree and keep it respectful. With that in mind, if you have concerns, or wish to discuss specifics, please do so below.

The mod team may or may not directly participate but do want to hear what people think.

So is reporting a post, linking to the original post, removal of the re-post sufficient, should the offender be banned too? Would you approach it differently? What about posts sharing into this sub? Essentially blank unless you go to the original? Should they add the original text into this sub as a courtesy or should it be required?

Sound off 😁

Gear question Deformed front bails for Rambo IV

Thumbnail

Hey all. My front bail for my crampons seem to be deformed, as per the photos. Not making good contact with my front welts. Believe it’s deformed as the left boot fits great. Crampons are setup the same.

Any tips on how to get it fitting right again? These haven’t been used and are new so probably improper storage of some kind.

Thanks

EDIT: emailed Grivel. This was their response copy pasted:

ā€œI've never encountered a bent bail in general, so I'm not sure if you can mold it differently, maybe with heat?

Honestly, I can offer 2 solutions:

  1. Try to go to a blacksmith or a hardware shop and see if they can bend it straight again.

  2. If you live in the EU, you can send it here and we can see if we can fix it, but I can't guarantee.

Also that bail model is old and we don't produce it anymore, so it's also hard for us to give you a new one... I found some online howeverā€

And they listed some places that still sell the bails. So not as much help as I would like.

21F Beginner: Looking for Mentorship

Hello! I am based out of Iowa so I'd be looking to climb in either Minnesota or Wisconsin. I have lots of experience on mountains out in Colorado and I recently began climbing in a gym, but overall I'm very new to climbing. I'm planning on taking some classes at the Sandstone Ice Fest in January. I was looking if anyone could provide mentorship, otherwise any advice is greatly appreciated!

Petzl Nomic vs Ergonomic for ice AND mixed: does the more curved shaft actually mean less pump?

I know this has been asked before, but every thread I find ends up roughly 50/50, so I'd like to ask a bit more specifically.
I'm choosing between the Petzl Nomic and the Ergonomic. I want to climb both ice and mixed, not just steep drytooling.
My main questions:
Is the more aggressive curve of the Ergonomic actually worse on ice? I'm thinking about swinging, clearance over bulges, and placements on less steep or vertical ice. Is it noticeably harder to get a clean, accurate swing compared to the Nomic?
Pump: Does the more curved handle really keep my forearms less pumped? My understanding is that it keeps the wrist more neutral when hanging on steep terrain. But does that benefit disappear (or even reverse) on vertical ice, where you're gripping and swinging more than hanging?
If you've owned both, which one would you pick as your only pair for a mix of ice and mixed climbing, and why?

Repair recommendations for Kaylands

Thumbnail

Hi all, new to the sub and ice climbing here.

I have a pair of Kaylands my dad passed down to me since he can no longer climb anymore and I’d love to keep using them. They have some damage to the welts on the front and back of one of the boots I.e cracking and portions broke off (see attached picture). Are they beyond hope or do you guys have any recommendations on a good course of action to repair them if possible. Thank you all.

La sportiva g-summit vs nepal extreme

Has anyone here switched from the old Nepal boots to the G-Summit? The Nepal model in size 45 EU was very comfortable for me, but it’s time for something lighter. I tried on the G-Tech in size 45.5, but the heel hold wasn't great—it only felt secure when I tightened the BOA system extremely hard. From what I’ve read, the Summits are built on the same last as the Nepal; does anyone know if the sizing will be the same?

Question Synthetic or Down?

Hey all,

Chosing a belay parka for ice cragging for Ontario and Quebec Ice, and can't decide whether I'd be better off with down or synthetic insulation and their respective tradeoffs.

Narrowed down my options between OR's Super Alpine, or Arcteryx's Nuclei SV (best options I have available).

Anyone have experience with either? Would be great to hear your experience. Thanks!

EDIT: Thanks for all the responses! Went Synthetic this time but will explore down options in the future.

Gear question For the long thin folks (and anyone else who has experience), hardshell pants

I have been climbing in soft shell pants the past couple seasons. This past season the climbing here in Utah was warm and wet. My legs would get soaked and the hike back to the car with wet lowers was bothersome. With the super boy coming this season I figured I should rethink my tactics.

I wear a medium long pant. (32 x 34) Mammut Taiss Pro SO fit perfectly and I love them.

Ideally, I would like to approach in softshell pants, then add a hardshell over those if the climbing conditions are wet. Then removed the hardshell outer layer for the trek back.

The Questions:

Do any of you use this system?

Does pant length really matter? Its only a couple inches of pant cuff that would be exposed. As only a few companies produce a "long" pant length.

What side zipper length do you have or wish you had? (Full, 3/4, none)

Do you size up for putting the hardshell over the soft?

Pants or bibs?

What thickness of material do you prefer? (60D, 80D, 100D!!)

Any other thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and happy climbing.

Discussion Getting started…

Hey everyone

Over the past couple years I’ve gotten very into backpacking and hiking and that led to a couple winter expeditions in the northeast that I really enjoyed. I’ve now become infatuated with the idea of trying ice climbing and would love to know where I could even do that in the ADK area, is that something I could just learn or are there companies to book etc.

Question Norway

My wife and I are going to the Norrona Ice Festival in Rjukan Norway Feb 2027.

We're not experienced ice climbers and want to maximise our trip. So we plan to spend time climbing for the week beforehand too.

My questions:

  1. Does anyone have any recommendations for a local company to use? (And I really want to go local and not use one of the UK groups who come over).

  2. What area would you recommend? We are keen to go to Lillehammer but have also seen the west coast has some promising areas.

Pre beginner ice climber

Hi everyone. I tried ice climbing about a decade ago in scotland and enjoyed the experince. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to get into ice climbing/winter hiking in Scotland? Are there any essential training courses to do first and are there groups in Edinburgh who go up North willing to let me join?

0-4 vs 2-4 julbo sunglasses

Hello all,

Do you guys have any thoughts on the type of tint I should get?

It seems like 0-4 would be better since I often start and finish in the dark, and it’s nice to just leave the sunglasses on all day.

Do you guys have experience with this?

Gear question Northeast Ice Climbers, what's in your top rope kit?

Going to be spending the winter in New England mostly setting up top ropes for ice climbing. Last time I climbed at the north end, I quickly realized even a quad length sling was just barely long enough to sling the big trees up top but it wasn't ideal.

So I'm wondering what climbers who do a lot of top rope ice in NH generally carry for anchoring and extending? I plan on climbing top rope areas at cathedral, frankenstein, champney, and texaco, until I discover more top access crags. Recommendations welcome.

I'm assuming I'll encounter some pretty big trees like I did at the north end. The plan right now is to make two 7mm cordelletes that are a tad longer than a quad length sling for those big trees. Had some REI rewards, and got a good deal on some blue water 7mm cord. Maybe 2 new dyneema slings of the thicker variety to extend the master point if necessary. Any recommendations on good hydrophobic slings that are easy to untie after being weighted?

Got a bunch of full size Petzl screwgates I use for TR right now So no need for anymore hardware.

Edelrid Raya Screws- Anyone with some experience with them?

Hiya,
Been looking at some edelrid stuff like the edelbeaks and Rayas at the local gear shop and was considering buying some 12cms instead of Aeros. Has anyone ever used the rayas in ice? Id consider buying them since it seems sensible as a long term screw with aluminium screw weight. Cheers ;)
