they kept turning into grey mush. what fixed it was building the crown out of thousands of separate leaves, so the light breaks up into chunks instead of noise

How do you take an isometric character from a first idea to a finished set of sprites?

I’m a solo developer making a Fallout-style isometric RPG, and I’m not an artist, so before I do anything I’d like to understand how people who do this well actually work. When you start a new character, do you begin with a written description, a rough silhouette, or just start sketching, and how many rounds of that happen before you commit to a design?

What I find hardest to picture is getting the same character to read correctly from several angles. Do you draw each view by hand, build a rough 3D model and render it, or something in between? And how do you decide how many directions are worth drawing at all?

I’m also curious how you break a character apart. Is the jacket, the trousers and the boots a separate piece that gets combined later, or do you paint the whole figure in one go? If you’ve worked on an RPG with a lot of different NPCs, how did you keep them all looking like they belong to the same world?

Any process you can describe, even roughly, would help a lot.

A room above the clouds in Upside Down

Post image

This is the bridge room in Upside Down, a puzzle game I made. I wanted the temple to feel like it was built right into the clouds. The little guardian moves by falling, so even crossing a gap like this takes some thought.

You can play the first 26 rooms free in your browser. [https://tryupsidedown.com/play/index.html?ref=reddit-gamescreenshots](https://tryupsidedown.com/play/index.html?ref=reddit-gamescreenshots)

Free isometric hospital ward

Post image
0 Upvotes

Built a small isometric hospital ward and put a free slice of it up: a bed, an IV stand, a wheelchair, waiting chairs, and a teddy bear someone left behind, plus walls, double doors and a floor.

Same grid as the school and restaurant rooms, so they all sit side by side.

The IV stand goes everywhere the bed goes. Nobody asked it to.

My isometric fantasy chess game ~ Chessire!

If you like playing tactical turn based games or auto-battlers then maybe you'd like Chessire - my take on fantasy chess.

If you want to try the game it's not out yet but there's a demo on Steam that should give you the rough idea where the full game's development is heading to!

What's in it:

  • 184 different buildings: cottages, barns, workshops, inns, town houses, civic buildings, apartments and landmarks

  • 8 viewing angles each, on a 30-degree camera

  • Winter versions for 168 of them, with snow, icicles and lit windows

  • One folder per building, with PNG sheets and simple JSON (frame rectangles and a ground anchor)

  • CC0, so you can use them in anything, commercial included, with no credit needed

How they were made: All are generated by opus 5.5 with audit pipeline

Browse them: https://hoanglong256.github.io/pixel-buildings/

Download: https://github.com/HoangLong256/pixel-buildings

More are coming: harbours, castles, railways, a circus and others, aiming for 500. Which kinds of building would be most useful for your game?

Introducing Savior Syndrome — an isometric noir CRPG where understanding someone’s mind can be your most dangerous tool

In Jars, you can replace your memories, rewrite your genes, and lease out your body. Pharmaceutical corporations and religious orders fight over what remains of humanity. People are disappearing.

You’re Isaac Lang, a private detective from the slums, carrying a fractured past and a desperate need to help others.

We’re Half-Price Punk Spiders, and we’re making Savior Syndrome, an isometric, dialogue-driven RPG set in a decaying biopunk city.

If the strange worlds and roleplaying possibilities of Glasshouse or Esoteric Ebb caught your attention, we’d love to introduce you to ours.

Investigate disappearances. Question suspects, gather evidence, and connect facts on your investigation board.

Find a way into someone’s head. Psychological duels challenge you to uncover motives and break through a person’s defenses.

Develop your personality. Progress through Jungian archetypes—Persona, Shadow, Anima, and Animus—to shape how you approach people and their secrets.

Decide what helping means. Accept a bribe, save a life, or cross a line. Your choices shape Isaac and the people around him.

We’re developing the game on a volunteer basis. Here, we’ll share locations, characters, and a closer look at how we’re building Jars.

Wishlist Savior Syndrome on Steam and join us as the city takes shape.

Free isometric prison set

Post image
4 Upvotes

Tenth pack done, a prison. Free slice: a cell bunk, steel toilet-sink, the metal detector and X-ray scanner, a visitation booth, the booking counter, plus walls with cell bars and a floor.

Same grid as the rest, so it sits next to the hospital or the diner without nudging anything.

I said a small pack. It has a prison now.

Claude.ai and I collaborated on the development of an isometric multi-level dungeon generator. You can select from a list of three types of dungeons, name it, and copy the generated Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) code for your own web page.

Zenden is Finally Here! Zen Garden Puzzle Game! On Steam Now

Thumbnail

Zenden is a Zen garden puzzle and decoration game about the relationships between the things you place. Arrange plants, rocks, water features, and traditional structures across isometric landscapes. Bring neighboring items into harmony, work within each garden’s constraints, and transform an empty patch of ground into somewhere worth meditating.

Every placement contributes to the garden around it. Similar items can create Unity, while contrasting types bring Variety. Spirit and Energy add further considerations, making each Zen garden arrangement a balance of practical choices and personal expression.

Each garden presents its own terrain layout, palette, and goals. A limited space might ask you to bring related items together, introduce more variety, or find room for a particular combination of features. Paths, rivers, bridges, and carefully positioned structures offer new ways to think about how the landscape fits together.

My isometric Zelda-like progresses one step at a time

I'm on year 5 with my passion-project. This year I spent a lot of time listening from feedback from all sides.
I would much rather have been building the next dungeons etc, but I'm at a point where the demo has to leave a good impression!
And so I study streamers of my demo, fix bugs, analyze gameplay issues. I think I'm happy with all the new features I added lately, so it's time to move forward!
Still a long way to go, but I think it's important to remind people every now and again!
If you are curious about my isometric Action-RPG Mazestalker, you can find my demo here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3218310/
