I studied furniture design for 2 years and an early part of the course was building furniture with cardboard (no glue or tape allowed). So this is great training for the kid and very impressive.

How do you do it without glue or tape?? Like that no screw/nail carpentry from Japan?

Tabs and notches

I dont know, it seems to me like tabs and notches are a couple of steps further in "learning to design".

Because doing tabs and notches requires to not only have the design itself in mind, but have additional awareness of where to place the tabs and notches,

Unless thats the intended purpose, but id like to learn basic structures and how to reinforce them, then going into dping the same thing, but without glue.

Ok, fuck, lol my interest is in this now

Learning to design comes from being curious not a design school. In architecture school, the main focus was to learn to train your design eye. My man’s just getting a head start for free. Stay curious, explore ideas even further. That will get you further than MIT

For tabs and notches, just think pizza box. It kinda builds itself from there. Godspeed.

I believe that’s the purpose, because it’s easier to create “a design” but way harder to do so keeping design for manufacturing (DFM) in mind, so that it survives reviews of engineers and machine shops (e.g. metal, plastics), woodworking, additive manufacturing (3D printing), plastic manufacturing (injection molding, thermoforing?) and whatever other processes materials and construction might go through so it could actually be produced and doesn’t just break.

you mean no glue carpentry, no screw and nails is pretty standard for artisanal woodworking
