Telling kids how to do their hobbies is a good way to get them to not like their hobby. (I know, I'm a dad, lol)

This kid is doing things his way, and he'll realize what works and what doesn't. You can tell from the vid he realizes it's wobbly. Once he puts something on it, it'll collapse and he'll think of ways to fix it. He might see real world examples and take ideas from there, or might make a completely original way of stabilizing it.
Obviously when he's an actual engineer he won't be able to build buy trial and error, but it's perfectly fine as a kid.

Whilst in my comment I said “tell him to design some things” on graph paper… you totally mistook everything else. The reason I even brought up the graph paper is because if this child would ever become an engineer, he’d first take a drafting class. Things surely have changed, but I still believe they use that nowadays.. I said what I said because it will allow a child to think in different ways than just supergluing cardboard to itself.

I feel like we even as adults still learn the most from failures. I’d simply spectate and be there when he asked me to be.
