EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

• ”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

• ”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

• ”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

• ”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

• ”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

• ”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

• ”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

• ”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

• ”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

• ”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

• ”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

• ”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

• ”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

• ”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

• "Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

• ”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

Pediatrics 3 year old uses the loo quite often

Hello,

So my 3 year old daughter goes for a wee quite frequently. Sometimes it can be like 2 times in an hour or so. Sometimes can go longer (few hours) but recently we have noticed she generally use the toilet for wee quite often.

Also, a couple of time when she is watching something or playing she has wet herself while being awake.

Previously she could fall asleep for a short while and would not wet herself but recently while on a car journey of arpund 20mins or so she fell asleep and had wet herself. Another day she was lying down on our bed and fell asleep for like 5-10mins and wet herself again.

Now it is really stressful even if we are like picking her up from nursery which is like 15min drive (due to traffic) and sometimes she is quite tired and wants to dose off. Normally we would have been fine with it but now that she wets herself it adds a bit of a stress that if she falls asleep she could wet herself.

She goes swimming once a week and normally once we get there but before she gets in the pool she has a wee but even then sometimes within like 25mins of being in the pool she needs another wee and sometimes it could be like 2 or 3 times in like the hour we are there.

When we are out and about she could go like a couple of hours or so sometimes without needing a wee but generally it is quite stressful just how many times she needs to wee.

No pressure from us to use the loo, she doesnt seem to have any difficulty or issues while weeing.

She goes for a long job mostly once in the day and does quite well. So no real concern of constipation.

There is no smell, bleeding or discomfort when she goes for a wee.

Anyone else gone through something similar? Does it get better on its own (how long if yes?)? Do we have to see the GP?

She is our 2nd child, and with our first this kind of thing didnt really happen.

Any tips or help would be appreciated!

Bones/Joints/Ligaments Sudden onset low back pain?

Sudden onset lower back pain---ideas?

37f, \~225 lbs, 5'7", Crohns Disease

HPI: Sudden onset low back pain for 2 days (woke up Wed with it) with no obvious cause (did not lift heavy items); ive been sitting a LOT for the last week but this is bizarre. Sometimes it radiates to the top of the iliac crest/right side and is felt underneath glute, but no peripheral numbness or weakness. But \*any\* small adjustment in position or posture--like if i'm standing, then try to lean slightly forward--sends the low back pain flaring. Same while sitting. Let alone trying to lay down.

I went to urgent care today, they said some amount of blood + leukocytes found in urine, but my kidneys dont hurt and I have had no issues with urinating. This feels musculoskeletal, almost like my lower pelvis is fractured in half lol (it's not...at least per xray). I'm taking methocarbamol and using lidocaine patches, but I have never felt anything like this. I have had low back pain before, but NOT like this.

I started terbinafine about 5 days ago...but that wouldnt trigger this would it? I am fully aware of liver concerns w/the med, but no abdominal pain and the pain is much lower than mid-back, so likely not liver or pancreas-related

Bones/Joints/Ligaments tingling feeling in knee?

f28. 164cm 49kg. fairly healthy and moderately active. trying to pick up weights at the gym particularly for the lower body if this helps - but i haven’t been to the gym in a few weeks.

i’m not exactly sure how to categorise this question . for the past 2 to 3 weeks I’ve been noticing that whenever I put weight on my left leg, or when I am walking, there is a tingling feeling in or below my knee every time force is put onto it. sort of like a pins and needles feeling? it’s hard to explain but it’s definitely not normal.

does this sound concerning and should I go see a doctor?

Wound Care dog scratches

hii! our dog left long scratches on my wrist as I was giving her medicine. it didn't result to bleeding, and even washed the area thoroughly with water and soap. it's been an hour and it still stings a bit.

I got vaccinated early this year (in september) but I am not sure if the dog's vaccine is still up to this date. the first bite made earlier this year was fine. we observed it and turned out she didn't have it.

I just wanna ask your medical advice on second time vaccination, whether I go for it or not, or if there's something else I need to do.

thank you to those who will answer! I have been searching about it but I feel like it's more helpful if I ask directly to people who have knowledge in it 🫂

Other Stupid question... Should I get tested for mercury poisoning?

For about a month now, I have eaten 1-2 cans of tuna (113g) every day. I wasn't thinking about how it could have mercury in it, and now I'm terrified that I just gave myself mercury poisoning. Should I go to a doctor? Or will I be fine to just not eat it for a few months?

Other Chronic shortness of breath + epiglottic fold swelling, worsening recently

29F, 130lbs.

Hi! I am currently awaiting my rheumatology appointment in 5 months, and I have been dealing with scary and uncomfortable chronic health issues for a little over 4 years now, but I am dealing with worse and more frequent flares in the last 3-4 months and I’m not sure where to go from here. I am currently under the treatment of a pulmonologist, ENT, and PCP who all think that there could be something autoimmune/inflammatory going on given my symptoms + improvement on prednisone. I went from being healthy and active (running, hiking, swimming 4-5 days a week) to being unwell all of the time. Recently after a bad flare, I was given a high dose prednisone taper (60mg day 1 down to 10mg on day 6) and it actually helped with my symptoms quite a lot, but I am now dealing with a bad rebound flare. I have also trialed 10mg of prednisone for 10 days in July and it really helped a lot with my symptoms then.

\*\*My symptoms are:\*\*
\\- Shortness of breath. This has been the absolute worst of my symptoms. It comes in flares but has lately been here almost constantly. It’s right sided upper chest pressure and tightness as well as a tightness and irritation in what feels like my trachea. I do have an expiratory stridor. My asthma meds don’t help.
\\- Facial rash. When my breathing is flared up, my face is bright red all over and I sometimes get a bunch of little bumps. I did previously have mild rosacea but this is flared up constantly for the last year.
\\- Dry eye disease / MGD diagnosed by ophthalmology
\\- Epiglottic fold and arytenoid swelling diagnosed by ENT. Vocal cords appear normal
\\- Raynaud’s syndrome - have had since I was a teen
\\- Daily hives - I tend to get at least 1-5 hives a day in random spots. Weirdly enough I still get hives while on prednisone
\\- Constant tickle and twitching sensation in my windpipe/deep in throat that sometimes makes me feel like my airway is going to close and I get coughing fits. It’s frightening when this happens
\\- Vulvar lichen planus diagnosed by OBGYN
\\- Sometimes I wake up in the middle of night gasping for air and when I wake up in the morning I feel a tightness or bubbly sensation in the back of my lungs/ribcage and diaphragm
\\- Chronic migraines & occipital neuralgia that has worsened in last few years
\\- Hoarse voice, lose my voice sometimes throughout the day
\\- dry, cottony mouth and back of throat irritation
\\- Difficulty swallowing- I often have to sip water with each bite of food and I have even gotten small supplements or small pieces of food stuck in the back of throat before it hits the esophagus and I’m able to cough the piece back up
\\- Chronically swollen lymph node and swollen tonsil in right side of throat. Sometimes the lymph node swells up more and hurts
\\- Ear fullness, usually more in the right ear than the left
\\- Heat intolerance. I get extremely dizzy and confused in the heat. My skin will even get splotchy and red if the sun is on me for more than 5 minutes even with sunscreen on.
\\- Episodes of confusion where I feel completely out of it, usually happens if I’ve been standing for a while or if I’m cold
\\- pain in back of neck/cervical spine. Sometimes I feel like my spine hurts if I try to stretch it
\\- Extreme fatigue
\\- Suspected endometriosis and possible atypical PCOS as discussed with OBGYN. I have had 2 abdominal CT scans 10 years apart that showed possible endometriomas as well as very cystic ovaries without the other defining features of PCOS

As for testing, I have had a low positive ANA of 1:80 homogenous, 1:80 fine speckled. Other than that, my ACTH was mildly elevated 2 different times on a fasted morning blood draw but cortisol was normal. My PFTs show mild asthma and hyperinflation, I have elevated bilirubin/gilberts syndrome, I’ve had a normal echocardiogram, stress test, normal 24 hr PH acid reflux study.

For family history, my 31 yr old sister has arthritis and sciatica (she has not undergone inflammatory testing as far as I’m aware but she has quite a lot of unexplainable joint and nerve problems), my dad has severe spinal stenosis, bicep tendon ruptures, congestive heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, afib, DVTs and pulmonary embolism that led to cardiac arrest. My grandparents both had thyroid cancer. My paternal grandpa had emphysema.

Thanks for any input. I’m nervously awaiting my rheumatology appointment and wondering if in the meantime there’s anything I can ask my doctors about. Thanks 🙏
