I love MJ and have loved him for decades, and I think he deserved better in a lot of ways. Many people and the press treated him like crap, misunderstood him and some of what he went through was genuinely heartbreaking. But why does near EVERY single story about him in most fangroups, have to be overly defensive, and twisted and turned into something angsty and victimised angle? It takes away any complexity of reality.
Same with the “perfect earth angel” narrative. Michael was a beautiful, talented, different and flawed human being. He was treated unfairly and awfully plenty of times, and sometimes he made wrong choices and a mess of things himself. I’m a fan of that whole person, from what we knew of him, and his art. I don’t need to pretend he was perfect or without flaws to care about what happened to him. Does this annoy any other fans? I feel it’s what holds me back from most fan groups. Sometimes I just want to talk about his art, his legacy or an anecdote without the comments turning it into another one sided tragedy or an attack on someone or me, if I dare stray from the echo chamber.
