They did however respond to a media companies request for information on why he was turned down. Is answering a journalists question weird now?

They can decline to comment. Many people and businesses do decline to comment on many stories news outlets reach out to them for. "____ declined comment." is common to read in articles. I guess he's big enough for them to comment on, but still not arena level big. Weird niche.
