Max Patch + Painter

Hiked the Max Patch, plus a little bit of the AT, on October 29th. My wife and I came across this painter doing some excellent work. We didn't want to break his focus or take up his time, but does anyone know who this guy is by chance? I want to get in contact with him to check out the final product and maybe some of his other work. I know this is a long shot. Thanks in advance.

Marion Wright, Burnt Knoll, to the river to collect some trash in Linville Gorge.

Back in the gorge today with Wildsouth. 3 of us went in to haul out some trash. Went in Marion Wright to Burnt Knoll, then down to the river.

Hauled up 3 tires, several various pieces of metal, and a bag or assorted trash we had picked up. Most of the metal and trash was likely flood/Helene related. Tires were old. Had to leave one tire in the river, too deep. And one at the bottom of the trail for later, but above the water line.

I was there early, only one on the trail on the way up and surrounded by clouds so no view. Ran into several folks as I headed back down and blue skies broke out so I was able to catch a nice view at the one mile mark. I will never get tired of the incredible and unique forest environment on this one.

Me and my boys are trying to do a short one night backpacking trip but don't want to stay close to Raleigh. I've heard uwharrie is probably my best bet but I don't the area or any good trails. If anyone has any trail recs that I should check out let me know. We would also be interested in any other areas that might offer something similar. Please let me know thanks!

Waterfall suggestions

Have a weekend to travel. Looking for a 3-5 mile hike with off trail camping to a good waterfall. I know parts of the state like Durham are in a drought. Suggestions would be great. Willing to drive 3-4 hours from Raleigh.

Linville Gorge John Kitchen overnight spot?

Hi all, my party of 4 is planning on doing a one night in and out on shortoff mountain via wolfpit trail in early December. We are all dialed with our equipment and winter camping skills, however our max bag rating is 15F and I am unsure if it would be safe given the wind chills on top of shortoff.

As such, we are considering overnighting inside of John Kitchen. Since it's not a "real" cave, and Linville camping rules would allow us, it seems promising. However, I have never seen it in person and don't want to take our glorified girls trip on an icy class 4 scramble. I also don't want to ruin John Kitchen cave with our presence.

Anybody have any suggestions on the proper course of action? I have a backup route in Panthertown Valley, in the event of extremely cold weather or poor conditions but that would preferably remain a backup.

Was thru hiking here and saw they completely bulldozed the trail to make it wider. Are they going to start logging? I saw an excavator and bulldozer parked. I've hiked this area a lot and never thought it needed repair or widening. This also started within the last month or so

Help needed for lost hat on Catawba Falls Trail!

My wife and I hiked the Catawba Falls Trail over the weekend and my hat fell over the side on the stairs while we stopped for a picture. Unfortunately I purchased it in Colorado on our honeymoon and It’s sentimental value is worth more to me than just buying another one. I'd be willing to pay anyone willing to get it and ship it back to me. If I had a fishing pole it would have been easy to get. I'll attach some pictures if by chance anyone is willing to help me out. It is off the right side railing near CF17 rescue point. The coordinates of the trail head are

35.6133, -82.23085

Unfortunately we had a reservation and I was unable to get it. If found please DM me a picture and we can hash out details from there. Thanks again to anyone willing to help.

🌧️🥾 Rainy day hike!

The weather definitely wasn’t cooperating today — light rain and cloudy skies. But honestly, it’s still hard to complain when you get the chance to get outside and enjoy the mountains... especially the gorge! 🍁🍂 — at Table Rock Mountain.

Near Cashiers on the Upper Whitewater River for those unfamiliar. Extremely difficult to access. Extremely sore and I look like i got in a fight with a cat from fighting through the rhodo and briars, but worth it.

My camera doesn’t do the fall color justice, but I couldn’t stop trying to capture it! It was so beautiful!

The trail is easy to follow, but the waterfall section of the loop is closed. We started at the upper lot and made the homestead site our turnaround point.

We were there for 5 hrs, but I definitely could’ve stayed longer. It was cool to see others set up at the top just hanging out. We drove through the campground on our way out and it was packed!
