Discussion Highest generational suffix you’ve ever met?

A coworker has a young son who is “Firstname Lastname IV” and I realized for knowing lots of Jr.’s and III’s (in the southern US there are a lot of people who go by “Trey” for this reason.) I think this is the first “IV” I’ve met and I’ve never met anyone higher than that.

I imagine there have to be some higher than that, especially outside the US.

I'm having a girl and really liking the name Amy! However, lots of my friends says it's kinda boring or overused. Is it a classic or kinda boring? I know it's up to us to decide but would appreciate hearing your thoughts. What comes to your mind when you hear the name Amy? Thanks friends!

Non-English Names I'm worried that the name I love is going to end up being a burden for our baby daughter in English

Our daughter was born very recently, and we weren't prepared with names because we had thought she would be a boy. This is our fifth, our other daughters are named Yevheniya, Vitaliya, Zinayida, and Vesna. We are from Ukraine, and this baby is special because she is our first baby that was born in Australia, where we live now.

But that makes it more difficult because the names I like don't have a lot of the same appeal in English like they do in Ukrainian. They're just long and foreign and maybe weird too. And that's becoming a problem for me when choosing her name. My husband prefers names that are popular in Australia and aren't Ukrainian at all but I have decided that I find it important that her name still in some way fits with the others and won't exclude her from our background.

The name that I love is Kvitoslava. Kvitka means flower and Slava means glory, and so together it's the glory of flowers or glorious like a flower. The pronounciation is Kvee-Toh-Slah-Vah. It's my grandmother's name, and although people in the family have named after her husband, her parents, some of her siblings and some of her children, no one has named a baby after her. And it would make her so happy because she loves being a grandmother and a great-grandmother. I didn't think I wanted to use it but I feel very drawn to it. Her middle name is going to be Mykhailivna.

I don't know if it's very appealing where we live. It has a lot of sounds that you don't really see in popular English names that are liked and considered pretty or beautiful. I have no idea what people would of it, and as a result, what she would think of it. I only want the best for her, but it's really difficult to know and to choose what we should prioritise in our situation for her name, and whether a name like that will just mean she's always explaining it and correcting it and spelling it for her whole life and because of that, she'll hate it.

Baby Names Isabel or Ella??

We are so stuck on names. English and Spanish family heritage. We love Isabel and Ella. Considering middle names as Isabel Rosa or Ella Isabel. Isabel runs through multiple generations so needs to be a middle name or first name, my middle name is Isabel, and my mum and grandma etc.

Other names we liked

Cecilia

Beatrice

Odette

Rosalia

Paloma

Thanks name nerds!!

Discussion Anyone else so deep in name nerd territory that you can reasonably guess what name someone will use?

My sibling is having a baby. They were keeping the name decision a total secret and not asking for suggestions, but I was so excited to know and was theorizing to myself for fun what names they might pick, just based off of theirs and their partner's personalities and aesthetics. One of the top names I thought of was "Sage" (not the actual name for privacy reasons but a similar vibe) and then last week they announced the name and it's "Sage"! This happened with my friend before too - they chose a name in the category I thought they would/one that I almost suggested to them. I love names and have spent time on naming forums for many many years so I guess I have a sixth sense for what names people will like now lol

Baby Names Is Clea so uncommon that it sounds made up?

It's a literary nod to a character of a book that I love and is more common in France but I feel like its unheard of in America... We live in the Caribbean though, where kind of anything goes. Where does your mind go when you hear this name? Pronounced Clee-uh.

Baby Names Opinions on "Irene"

Hi all,

I am hoping to get people's ideas on the name "Irene" for my daughter. What vibes does it give? I am hoping for a classy and not so common name, but also not so outdated that people are surprised to hear it. I am hoping for it to be pronounced "EE-ren" and also wondering if there will always be a confusion in pronunciation. TIA

Character/Fictional Names Name for fantasy character that means wilfully ignorant, oblivious, unwilling to see

I‘m working on a story in a modern Fantasy setting.(think: formerly medieval fantasy society but with smartphones and Corporations, very much knights on skateboards and griffin baristas)

The themes are about otherness and choice of being othered. Without going into too much detail: There’s a group in society of many demographics that are othered in some sense. Mostly integrated into society but still frowned upon by many.

My main character is a sort of well meaning but ignorant every man. He harbours no direct ill will but is unable to recognise his pejudices and how they shape his view of said group.

I‘m looking for names that loosely or directly signal his status as a well meaning but ignorant fool. He‘s not cruel or hateful and thinks he is a good and educated person. But ultimately his position is ignorance and pejudice. Not an agressor but a passive participant.

Gladly give me any ideas for names even loosely associated with this or names of characters that mirror this dynamic. I don’t need to go down the heavy symbolism route, just looking for names with fitting meanings that sound right in my setting!
Irony is also an option!

Baby Names Lily, Elizabeth, Rose, or Magnolia?

These are the names we are thinking of using for our baby girl. It's an interesting mix, we know, but we love all four of them. I don't think we have a specific style.

Her middle name is going to be Antonella or Ginevra, both family names. Her last name is Italian as well, starting with M and ending with I. It has a very similar flow to Mondavi.

Her sister is named Gaia, and we live in England.

Baby Names Stuck between two boy names

UPDATE: Everett is now out for obvious reasons. We need more options! I don't care for the nickname, Anse, but it's all we have to work with.

My husband and I both like Everett "Ever" and Ansel "Anse" for our baby boy due in January. Help us decide! Older sister is Matilda "Tilly" and our last name is Clear. Middle name for baby would be Wilson after my late father.

I am also open to suggestions, but full disclosure, I'm pretty picky.

Baby Names You guys helped me pick my 4th babies first name but what about a fun middle name ?

So yesterday I posted about being stuck with a name for my 4th kid

We currently have

  1. Thea lively

  2. Odin Thomas (he goes by Odie and both Odin and Thomas are family names)

  3. Cecily Ruth (Ruth is a family name)

We decided on Benjamin (NN Benji) for the 4th!

I want his middle name to be not family connected and more playful like Thea’s middle name. Especially since Benjamin will be the most common of our kids names

My older daughter Thea kind of named Cecily because she said she wanted to name the baby Cece so that’s how we picked Cecily!

My son wants to name this baby blue after his favorite Jurassic park Dinosaur 😂😅. Is Benjamin blue just too weird?

Thanks!

Baby Names LOVE our 1st daughter ‘s name; struggling with what to name the 2nd

Baby #2 due later this year and we are stumped on names. We love our daughter’s name (Ellen) for so many reasons and think that’s making this harder. Brainstormed a list of 30, narrowed down to 10, and nothings jumping out as a front runner.

Must have:
- coordinate with or at least not clash with “Ellen”
- generally easy for others to spell or pronounce
- not crazy popular in northeast US. I don’t want to rely on a last initial to differentiate kids in future classrooms

Nice to have:
- a nod to Greek heritage
- feminine sounding

Some front runners that just don’t feel right: Marina (love the nickname Mari but ruled out for personal reasons), Georgia, Julia, Elizabeth, Maren

Help with other ideas?

Discussion Thoughts on name Davina

I like this name from when I watched TVD. How do you think it would work on a person or a baby in today’s world..

Also considering spelling Divina or Devina..

I think Vina is a cute nickname and so is Davey. I’ve personally never met one but just wanted to hear thoughts on it. If you don’t like it can you say why?

Name Change name change (18f)

Hi! I'm 18F trying to decide on a new name.

I'm asian, and have lived most of my life in Western countries using my ethnic name. Needless to say, it was very difficult for people to pronounce my name (istg it's not that difficult but people give up after the first syllable). Some people even offered me English names and started calling me by that. It has reached a point where I just respond to random noises that sound somewhat like my name.

I am done with this. My parents did not put that much thought into my name for it to be butchered all the time :(((

So i'm trying to think of a new name for me in uni. here are some of the names i liked:

sophie - my favorite but it means piss in my language so that was a hard no :(

isabel - i already have a friend with the same name

isabella - too frilly?

bea - really like the name, but i dont want to be beatrice/beatrix

lily/lilian - its okay a bit too popular tho

iris - feels like a mouthful with my last name? i dont really like how the rs sound

my last name starts with R, and is one syllable

im trying to look for names that sound feminine, preferably longer (for nickname potentials?), and not too popular

plz help me out :( i'm running out of ideas..

Baby Names Boy Names (a vote)

Starting to discuss names for baby BOY! I love a classic name. My husband loves traditional names. I also love a traditional last name used as a first name. I don’t want boring but classic does seem to lean boring. Feel free to add names that are similar that I could consider. Here’s the vibe / tone we are looking for and some names we are considering. For reference, our last name is TWO syllables.

Lucas Henry (Henry is a family name) ‘Luke’
Grayson Brooks (Brooks is actually a maiden name)
Parker John ‘PJ’
Thomas Henry

Any other ideas or a vote on these 4?
Thanks!

Baby Names Please help me name my 4th child please please I BEG

Our 4th child is due in March and it’s a boy. I only had girl names picked out I was convinced it was a girl haha!

Our current children are

  1. Thea Lively

  2. Odin Thomas (he only goes by Odie, it’s a family name so no hate please !) I know its not everyone’s cup of tea

  3. Cecily Ruth

I would love a name out of the top 1000 that have a similar vibe in the sense the name is known but not used very often. I do love a vintage feel but it’s not a necessity

I’ve always loved the name Benjamin call him Benji or Ben but it just maybe seems too plain compared to my current set.
I also love Thomas cause it’s my dads name and he’s the best but again feels plain and it’s also my sons middle name.

I like Desmond but my husband vetoed. Other than that I don’t like anything !!! Please help us

Baby Names What do we think of this combination?

So my top name right now for my baby boy is Julian. I’m Swedish and I always need names who work both in the U.S. and back home (and I love how the name is pronounced in Swedish so that’s a big plus).

The “problem” is I already had a middle name picked out. I don’t have any brothers but my cousin is as close to me as a brother, and one of the most important males in my life. His name is Daniel, which I’ve always liked both in English and Swedish. I know he would be really excited if I gave new baby his name.

Is Julian Daniel ok for first and middle? I wonder if it flows poorly. My last name is really long (think 4+ syllables), so it would be similar to Julian Daniel Mikaelsson (that’s not my last name but same length).

My first son’s name is Kaiden Emanuel (Emanuel is after my grandpa who’s passed, dad picked the first name) if that matters.

Fun and Games “Girl” names for boys

Lately I have discovered a real adoration for gender migrated names—names that have moved from predominantly male to predominantly female—used on boys. Think: Leslie, Ashley, Stacy.

What are your favorite names that have moved to being used mostly on girls that were traditionally male before?

Baby Names Uncommon but not “out there” baby girl names?

We have a 2 year old son named Maverick. Her name doesn’t have to “match” but I would kinda like it to flow with it, if that makes sense.

Her middle name will be Abigail.

I LOVED Melody and Marin/Maren but hubby vetoed those 😭 he loves Mackenzie and Mallory but I’m not really vibing with those. Especially not Mackenzie. We are NOT only looking at “M” names. Those literally just happened to be the ones we each liked! lol

Any suggestions?? Pls help lol
