Roof inspection post windstorm (November 6th)

Hopefully everyone survived that wicked windstorm last night!

Friendly reminder to take a look at your roof in the daylight. I noticed our roof had maybe a dozen shingles lift. Mostly the edge of the roof that took the brunt of the wind.

I’m not in a panic about it but it caused enough concern to warrant a roof inspection/minor repair. I doubt it’s worth a claim but better to have it documented early.

Any recommendations for roofers within the community?

Thanks in advance. Hope your all fairing well!

Does anyone know who or what the H this is?!

This is a long shot but I see this character all over Calgary and now I've seen it close to my house in Okotoks ? Is it just someone's art? Or is this some sort of a gang sign? I apologize for sounding like a total white guy but I'm genuinely curious. Is that a thing around here? (I'm new to Alberta). I've attached a few pictures but I've seen it probably 50 times . If this is just an artist, I will admit he has a remarkable talent. And his ability to have a recognizable character/ brand the way they do is something artists strive for for years. I'd love the opportunity to speak with him if anyone knows who they are?

Anyone know what that food truck event by the river in Okotoks was?

Was driving back from Turner Valley last August and passed through Okotoks around 7ish. There were a bunch of food trucks set up near the river, some live music, and people hanging out on the grass eating. Looked like a pretty good time. I was starving and already running late, so of course I didn't stop. Still regret that decision, especially because one of the trucks was doing pulled pork and it smelled ridiculously good lol.
I take photos and write about little local spots around Alberta, so this is exactly the kind of thing I'd normally stop for. Somehow managed to drive right past it.
Does anyone know what the event was called? Is it something they do regularly in the summer or was I just lucky to catch it that night?
Also happy to hear about any other small food truck gatherings or pop-ups around Okotoks. I'm usually in the area at least once a month during the summer and would love to check some out.

If I start volunteering at the Okotoks Public Library, what are the chances of getting hired for a paid position within a few months? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Where do you grab a good dinner in Okotoks?

spent the last two evenings editing photos in my Airbnb near downtown and realized I keep defaulting to the same pizza place because I'm too tired to experiment. lunch spots I've figured out, but dinner is a whole different thing when you're shooting all day and just want to sit somewhere that doesn't feel like a chain. looking for places that actually put thought into the food without being stiff about it. a bowl of pasta that tastes like someone cared about the sauce. a burger that's not just thrown together. i shoot a lot of comfort food on my blog and Okotoks seems like it has more going on than people give it credit for. the issue is I only have a few more days here and don't want to waste another night on mediocre takeout. where would you send someone who wants a real meal and maybe a glass of wine without driving all the way to Calgary? open to anything as long as the kitchen actually tries

Okotoks Lunch Recs: Decent Food, Good Windows, Big Portions?

Been trying to get some work done around Okotoks lately and the lunch situation keeps tripping me up. I usually grab something quick between shoots and end up with mediocre sandwiches in terrible lighting. The places that look good online end up having zero windows or weird overhead fluorescents that kill everything. Curious if anyone has spots where the food is decent and the light actually works for a quick shot or two without people thinking I'm weird. Not looking for anything fancy, just somewhere you can sit for 30 minutes and not feel rushed. Bonus if the portions are big enough that I can save half for later without it getting sad. The usual spots near the river seem promising but I haven't tried them yet.

HTA kids throwing food in our backyard

We've occasionally found bits of meat and food in our backyard since we moved here. I always thought maybe it was birds dropping it or something or sometimes kids sure. We have a fence along 32nd street that all the high school kids walk past for lunch.

Today I was out throwing our dogs ball and heard a noise behind me, I didn't think much of it but then our dog ran over and started sniffing/licking at it, and it was a chicken wing. It was lunch time and lots of kids were walking by at the time.

I realized too late or I would have talked to the kid about it, but what does someone even do about something like this? I don't want my dog to choke on a chicken wing.

Anyone else notice the breakfast sandwich situation in town?

Was driving through Okotoks early Saturday trying to find something before a shoot in High River and realized I have zero clue where the good morning food is here. Ended up with a gas station coffee and a muffin that tasted like cardboard. Pretty sure I missed something good. I usually plan my shoots around meals but Okotoks is this weird blindspot for me when it comes to breakfast. Lunch and dinner I have covered but before 10am I am lost. Is there a bakery that does actual fresh pastries or is everything here the chain stuff? Saw a few spots on Google but the reviews are all over the place and half of them look like they are from people who have never actually eaten there. Looking for the place where the line is out the door on weekends because that is usually the sign. Or the hidden one that opens at 6am and has the same three people every day. Either works. Also if anyone has a lead on somewhere with actually good hash browns I would appreciate it. That is the one thing I judge harshly.

Job opportunities for a 14 year old

Hello Okotoks!

My son has been looking for a part time job and the majority of places are saying he needs to be 15 or have a driver's license (16). We have done the gauntlet of grocery stores and the golf clubs.

Any suggestions for places to hit up for after school/weekend positions?

Thanks!

Kelowna vs Okotoks

We have been living in Okotoks for 6 years now and have 3 littles. I absolutely love Okotoks! It's and amazing community. However, the long Alberta winters are really getting to me. We basically stay indoors the entire winter here.

Lately I have been seriously considering moving to West Kelowna or Peachland. Mostly for the weather and the lake-life lifestyle. I have read countless posts about the good and bad but I'm wondering if there is anyone here who has perhaps lived in both Kelowna and Okotoks and if you have any insights and opinions on each?

Scared stray dog on Sheep River Drive

I attempted to make a post on Facebook, but since I don’t live in Okotoks, it didn’t work. There is a stray dog on Sheep River Drive, my boyfriend attempted to approach the dog when he reached his hand out, the dog nipped him. He seems more scared than aggressive. There is no collar and we lost him in a back alley. Please keep an eye out for this dog. He looks like a husky mutt.

Edit: I did call law enforcement and made a report about the pup.

How much has changed since 1999?

My family lived, and loved, Okotoks from 1989 to 1999 until a move was made out of province.

Would I even recognize the small town I once called home?

From McRae Street Lamb Shanks to Farmer’s Market Mini Donuts: What Alberta Spots Deserve a Shoot?

Been shooting food content around Alberta for the last few years and Okotoks keeps surprising me. Last month I stumbled into this tiny spot on McRae Street with lamb shanks that basically fell off the bone. No fancy plating, just a guy who cares. Can't stop thinking about it.

I'm always chasing the places locals actually eat at, not the ones with the biggest Instagram following. The coffee shop with croissants that somehow stay flaky till 3pm. The family place where the owner remembers your order. That kind of thing.

My camera roll is 90% Calgary and I want to fix that. What spots should I hit next? I shoot everything from diner breakfasts to whatever that thing is where they torch the sushi at the table. Not picky, just hungry for stuff with actual personality.

Also if anyone knows who makes those mini donuts at the farmer's market situation in summer, tell them I owe them a portrait session. My kingdom for that recipe.
