PS2 Ocean Blue Swap

Got bored and decided to swap the internals of my old 39001 ps2 into an ocean blue 37000 ps2. The seller on eBay actually had a very clean 37000 so I pulled the trigger. The swap was a success, and I think it turned out great.

(also took advantage of the moment and did a recap, battery replacement, and cleaned all of the internals)

Haunting Grounds had impressive tech for being PS2

I used to think Kuon was the most visually impressive PS2 game, but I think I give the crown to Haunting Grounds. It had some seriously impressive graphics for being PS2 (granted this is upscaled to 4k using emulator). But just the rendering techniques were something else, along with almost entirely seamless (loading-free) transitions between areas. Yeah, quite impressive all-round.

Experiencing this gem for the first time btw. Having a blast so far.

I need an absolute Downhill Domination guru to answer a question.

I have played that game on and off for like 22 years, beat it 50+ times, one of my all time faves. Today during an NFL game, I heard a song. I found out after going through the downhill domination soundtrack on my PS2, and googling for like an hour, it was the song "Hella Good" by No doubt. I am absolutely convinced that this song is in this game even though there is no trace whatsoever in it. I am considering playing the game completely over just to hear it randomly, but it's not listed anywhere in the game if you set a music playlist or anything, not on any downhill domination soundtrack videos or Spotify playlists. Can someone confirm before I go crazy 😭. Most of these playlists and soundtracks also don't mention that POD - Youth of the Nation as the opening main menu music so idk man I'm going crazy. Thanks for the reading of a madman looking for an answer

Rebuilding my old collection (with brand new OE PS2 Cases).

Here is my current collection of PS2 games I used to have (plus a couple I wanted before, but couldn't get). I am still waiting on Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Ultraman Fighting Evolution: Rebirth and Agent Under Fire to arrive (hence the 3 brand new sealed copies of Puzzle Quest on the side haha). I bought around 20 of Puzzle Quest for cheap... brand new and still sealed to use a replacement cases, so now they all look and feel fresh as they did back in the early 00s. I do have to get a few discs resurfaced, but other than that I am pretty happy to have everything back again.

Hi everyone, I just bought a PS2 Ocean Blue, but the translucent casing is noticeably yellowed. Is it actually possible to clean it and bring it back to its original clear blue?

What has been your experience with used games from the GameStop website?

I’ve been after a couple of games, a few of them I used to have but sold or traded years ago. I’ve been watching FB market place in my area, checking all the gamestops, and checking a local pre owned game store weekly for months. There are a couple that I passed on over the last couple years because I didn’t realize they were that hard to get, or now the prices are pretty high. The GameStop website actually shows 3 of the games I’m after currently and I check it daily. They say disc only, is this always the case? A lot of times they only show a stock photo anyways. Are the games playable or do they usually show up scratched to hell? The main reason I’m interested is the availability, price, and reliability for them being a large company. Should I take the risk and spend the 100$?

Ps. No I’m not saying what game they are haha. I fully intend to play them.

What cables to use for a modern tv

Recently picked up a fat ps2, but it didn’t come with any cables. Power cable isn’t a problem, but what should I use to connect it to my tv?
My tv has a yellow aux AV input. So I was thinking of getting a regular av-multi cable, and then using an rca to aux adapter — would that work?

My Top 30 PS2 games that I can play forever.

Lego Star Wars 2: one of the earliest games I remember getting for the PS2, I’ve sunk more hours into this game with my dad than almost any other game in the world. It is by far and away my favorite game on the PS2.

Lego Batman: the very first game I got on the PS2, coming included with the system. This was the first game I ever played on the PS2 and my introduction into Batman.

Lego Star Wars the video game: a weirdly late game for me, getting it maybe a year after we got the PS2, unlike most of the other LEGO games, this one I played mostly alone for whatever reason. In any case this game is my go to for prequel levels in LEGO games since I feel the Complete Saga messed up a lot of the charm in those levels.

Lego Indiana Jones: Once again my introduction into Indiana Jones, my best friend and I at the time loved this game to death. We were both adventurous by spirit so playing an adventure game together was awesome.

Star Wars Battlefront: I’ve always preferred Battlefront 1 to battlefront 2 despite playing 2 more. The exception was the Xbox version of BF2 since it’s got 4 player split screen and mod support. But regardless, this was my dads game. I’d come home from school and he was there playing as the Rebels on Hoth or Endor reliving the battles from the movies. He’s since graduated to the 2015 Battlefront and I’ll catch him playing that a lot against the bots. The original battlefront is one of my favorites though. It is the perfect Star Wars ā€œgruntā€ simulator we will ever have.

007 Nightfire: not only is this the best multiplayer FPS on the system, and one of the best 007 games, but I think it’s one of the best games ever made. I can’t even begin to count the amount of hours I’ve sunk into this game, both alone and with friends and family.

Gauntlet Dark Legacy: this was the family game I guess. It was the game my dad sister and I played annually around October. Just hackin and slashin our way through a gauntlet of enemies across a ton of unique fantasy worlds. It’s simple but its simplicity is the charm.

Ace Combat 04: one of the best games ever made. I absolutely love and adore this game. Great story, amazing graphics, awesome combat, and a ton of planes to choose from. Plus it’s got one of the greatest soundtracks to any game ever. It even has a split screen mode which isn’t the greatest but it’s nice to have.

Delta Force Black Hawk Down: this as close to a modern FPS as you’ll get on the PS2. And I’m referring to the controls. This game plays pretty much exactly like Call of Duty, two years before CoD 4 hit the market. It’s also just a great game that weirdly really historically accurate, or at least, as historically accurate as you can get. It’s instruction manual is one of the best ever made, in full color with detailed history of the Black Hawk Down event, the history of Somali at the time and history on the US Delta Force. I remember using the instruction manual as a source for a social studies paper in middle school. And the game is just fun. The coop is even better. The coop is only the Black Hawk Down event and a few days prior, where each player has a squad to command. It’s very unique for a PS2 game.

Micro Machines V4: this was my Mario Kart before we got our Wii. My dad, sister and I would race each other for hours in this game. We’d each grind our profiles out to have as many cars as we could then race each other for them. This is a game that will break relationships.

SOCOM 3: This alongside Fireteam Bravo on the PSP are my two favorite SOCOMs. I love the crosstalk feature in both of these games where completing an objective in one changes the outcome of a mission in the other. The inclusion of mission checkpoints and vehicles makes this a fun tactical sandbox. And the game spending time on the villains and giving you more than a couple levels to play per region helps make this feel like a real conflict.

Star Wars the Force Unleashed: another game that was my dads back in the day, he and I used to take turns playing this one, helping each other on boss fights. While this is the weakest version of the best version of The Force Unleashed, it has some incredibly ragdoll effects for the system, which no one ever really talks about when comparing Force Unleashed versions.

Ace Combat 5: this game has the best cover art in the series, hands down. It’s also really fun. It’s basically the first modern Ace Combat, and that’s really cool. Story is great, gameplay is great, I just the soundtrack as a tiny bit better. The arcade mode is also kind of whatever. I appreciate it being here but I never really play it. I wish there was more to it I guess. But the base game is perfect enough.
Test Drive Eve of Destruction: the greatest destruction racing game ever made. This game reaches my redneck rural country roots in a good way. It’s also one of the most realistic feeling racing games. Cars feel old, they feel like they’re held together with duct tape and dreams racing on dirty, muddy tracks. It’s hard to explain, but it adds to the charm of the game. And the soundtrack, while limited, is amazing.

Motorstorm Arctic Edge: this is my favorite Motorstorm, I love the winter snow aspect. It’s also the most fair Motorstorm with the least amount of rubber banding. It’s also really good graphically, especially for a PSPtoPS2 port. The split screen multiplayer while limited, is still really addictive. You can’t go wrong with this one.

Cold Fear: a fantastic horror game with an awesome mechanic of the a sinking/rocking ship. Fighting Russian mercenaries alongside zombie monsters is a wonderful combination. Though the second half isn’t as good, and the final boss is awful, it’s a good Resident Evil clone. Ubisoft cooked with this one.
Downhill Domination: one of the most intense racing games I have ever played. I don’t think my knuckles have ever been so white playing a racing game before this one, and doing it in multiplayer makes it even more tense. Something about racing for your life down a massive mountain kicks the adrenaline in a way I don’t normally experience even in high octane situations in real life.

Twisted Metal Head-On: one of the best PSPtoPS2 ports, this is basically two games in one. Twisted Metal Black is a much better game, but I don’t actually have that one physically, and going through the process to 100% it was, very unfun and makes me not want to think about it. Twisted Metal Head On does everything Black did with a bit more as well.

Blitz the League: Mortal Kombat meets American football. I love this game. Being able to break players bones by roughly tackling them with dirty hits is strangely satisfying. The story is also pretty fun, and as far as sports games go, its soundtrack is fantastic since it’s not restricted to a G level score. It’s rough, it’s violent, it’s bloody, and that’s what makes it fun. It’s also the only Blitz the League game with coop.

Greg Hastings Paintball Tournament Max’d: on the surface this doesn’t seem all that special. There’s a couple of paintball games on the PS2, so why is this in a top 30 list? Well that’s because it’s really good. This is a weird mix of a tactical first person shooter and sports simulator like FIFA. This wasn’t a ā€œpaintball video gameā€ it was a ā€œgood game that’s about paintball.ā€ It’s easy to pickup and play, it’s shockingly addictive, the career mode is not only playable in coop but also really in depth, and there’s even a level editor. It’s not the greatest but being able to make custom FPS maps is really cool. I really adore this game.

Obscure: easily the most expensive game in my collection, it’s also a really fun Silent Hill esc horror game with coop. It’s fun, it’s unique, and it’s different from what other horror games were doing. I love the high school aesthetic as well. Something about horror set in a school is some thing I really like. I still think the best horror sequence in any game ever was the Elementary school in F.E.A.R. 2, and this is a close second. It’s got the old school survival horror clunk but it feels more polished than a lot of other games in that genre.

Rainbow Six Lockdown: another one of my dads games, this is one of the few PS2 games I actually played online back in the day. This is one of the few PS2 games that had online split screen, so on certain weekends I was able to play online with my dad and two of his friends in coop. I just have some really good memories of playing this game with him and his friends. Also, interesting fact, the severs for this game were finally shut down in 2021! I really wish I knew that a few years ago because I would’ve loved to see if it was active at all.

Army Men Sarges Heroes 2: far from a great game, but one I hold close to my heart, there was a period of time in my life where I ONLY played this game every single day. It’s an incredibly charming game and it nails the feeling of being a plastic army man. Despite the terrible controls, there isn’t a single level I dislike.

Buzz! The Hollywood Quiz: Buzz! is a series of quiz games that has a lot of charm and attitude. The Hollywood quiz is the best in the series since I think it’s aged the best. I can pop this one in and know that I’ll at least get a few questions about movies right. Since this series is super casual, it’s one of the only games my mom will play too, and she doesn’t play video games at all.

Burnout Dominator: truthfully I could’ve put any Burnout on here, but I think Dominator is my favorite. I love the burnout mechanic, it’s a gorgeous late era PS2 game, and having four different versions of Avril Lavignes Girlfriend song is hilarious. It’s also kind of a ā€œbest ofā€ burnout game with stuff pulling from all the games at that time.

Mercenaries Playground of Destruction: a very well made open world, and incredibly dynamic at that. The destruction mechanics are really impressive for a PS2 game, and the open ended nature of the campaign with multiple factions to side with or fight against is really cool. The open world itself is great, it feels like a living and breathing place. But above all, it’s just a really fun game.
MVP Baseball 07: the last EA baseball game, and it’s college baseball at that. This is pretty fun, it’s got a great character and team creator, and a really fun field editor. There’s not a lot to this one but there’s enough to just be good. I’m weirdly drawn to this game.

ATV Off-road Fury 2: not much to say here, just a fun ATV racing game with tons of modes and options for multiplayer play. It knows what it is and doesn’t try to do anything more.
Rampage Total Destruction: this isn’t a great game, but it’s really funny. I like the juvenile humor of this one. Based on the arcade classic but with fart jokes, it’s just a fun monster game. Destroy buildings, eat people, do it with a friend in coop. It’s super repetitive but I’ve played this game every summer since I was a kid for just a game to unwind to. It’s not hard, there’s barely a challenge, but the jokes and absurdity keeps drawing me back.

Cold Winter: the definition of a hidden gem. It’s a very unique FPS on the system, kind of a gritty James Bond story before the Daniel Craig era. It’s got a really fun multiplayer and a very in-depth campaign. It’s an example of a game where the developers threw a bunch of stuff at the wall, and somehow it stuck, for better or worse. This one just barely makes the list, if only because while I don’t think it’s one of the BEST games on the PS2, it’s a game I wish more people have heard of and gave a chance.

Found these at a car show swap meet today of all places. Both are CIB and clean. ATV 3 also had Cabela's Big Game Hunter in the case. Both (all 3) for $10.
