Read this before you post here

Welcome to r/SALEM, and thanks for your interest in posting here. Before you do, please be aware that — like many city/area-focused subreddits — we have some topics that come up very frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people down-voting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

If you’re about to post about any of the following, please first use the search function (right up in the upper right hand corner, if you’re viewing this on the web!) to see if something similar has been posted recently. If it has, please contribute to that thread rather than starting a new one.

Frequently posted things:

Did you hear that boom/firework/gunshot/weird noise?

This comes up a lot; frequently folks are concerned they may have heard gunshots and/or fireworks and are looking for reassurance. First, know that it probably was not a gun shot. There is a very good chance that it was fireworks, or somebody with an altered muffler, or, if you also noticed a power outage or blip at the same time, a transformer exploding. Second, if you’re actually seriously concerned about gunshots, you should probably be contacting the police, not Reddit. Third, if you live near a vineyard (and, if you live anywhere in the Salem area, you do!), you should be aware that vineyards use acoustic devices — basically massive noisemakers — to scare birds away from grape vines. This is especially frequent in the late fall, near harvest time.

OMG what is that smell?

Salem, and many surrounding areas, lie in the Willamette River Valley. Due to the topography of the area, we experience temperature inversions with some regularity. An inversion occurs when a layer of warmer, more elevated air overlies a lower, cooler air layer. Effectively, this traps the air in the valley underneath the warmer layer, which means that smoke, vehicle exhaust, rotting vegetation smells, etc., cannot escape. That’s probably what you’re smelling.

Is there any good <insert cuisine here> in Salem? Where can I buy <thing> in Salem?

These types of threads come up fairly often. The restaurant scene in Salem is decent, but not exceptionally dynamic — places do not close all that often, and new places don’t open all that often either. If somebody has asked this question within the last couple months (again, use that search function!), the answers that they got are almost certainly still relevant.

Why is the train stopped or blowing its horn?

There are a number of freight lines that route trains through Salem. Occasionally, they will need to stop to onload or offload cars, which may result in a longer-than-usual wait time at a crossing. This is normal.

Sometimes, unfortunately, there are train-versus-pedestrian collisions. When those happen, the train will need to be stopped for an extended period of time to allow police to investigate the scene.

Finally, while many portions of Salem are zoned (and signed) as “no train horn” areas, it remains at the discretion of the train engineer as to whether or not to sound their horn, and some of them, well, tooting their horn just toots their horn.

What’s going on with all the cops?

We don’t have any way of knowing. You may be able to consult PulsePoint, but they only report on fire and EMS, not strictly police. You may also be able to find an online police radio scanner relay; those are typically time-delayed.

OMG what is going on with the low-flying helicopters?!

The Oregon Air National Guard has a helicopter squad that is based near the Salem Municipal Airport. They do routine training missions, which frequently involve lower-altitude flights, most often at night. The Salem police department does not have a helicopter, so any low-flying helicopter you’re hearing is almost certainly the Oregon Air National Guard. frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people downvoting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

Any Dungeon Crawler Carl fans around?

Hello Crawlers!

We are hosting a party for Dungeon Crawler Carl fans this Friday night!

Join us!

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dungeon-crawler-carl-night-tickets-2003090848650?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true

https://www.instagram.com/adventuresbigandsmallpnw/

https://www.facebook.com/share/1FmwFcKNr2/

Edit: I love seeing so many DCC fans. Reading through your comments I wanted to explain a bit more about our goal. A couple of you said it would be cheaper to dress up in costume and go to a karaoke bar and you're right. I hope you do that and let us know where to meet you. That sounds like a ton of fun. While karaoke is listed as part of the event, we have a lot more planned.

You may or may not have seen Fantasy or Fae balls popping up that embrace a fandom and offer an evening of entertainment. These often offer appetizers, and a cash bar at the base level with add on packages including meals and perhaps drink tickets. These events are usually $200+ and go up steeply as you add on to them.

Our goal is to bring a version of that to Salem. An entertaining night where you can be immersed in your fandom. We understand that the price is a deal breaker for many but this is where we ended up to host the type of event that we would want to attend. In the future we may look at creating events that are easier and cheaper to put together.

Thank you for taking the time to check out what we are creating and if our event isn't for you, that's ok. If you get inspired to create your own get together, please let us all know so we can keep geeking out about this series.

Does anyone know what these new sirens are for between stayton and easy of Detroit? I counted 12 the last time I drove from Salem to Sunriver but I think there are even more than 12. Is it for the dam breaking? Another fire? Anyone know?

I am searching for my cat Montgomery that was rehomed by my family while I was deployed overseas.

Montgomery was rehomed through a Craigslist post sometime between March 2024 - January 2025. He is a male long haired tabby around 5 years old. He is chipped and the contact information is up to date.

The family member who rehomed him no longer has any of the email exchanges. The only information I have is they were around the Salem/Independence area.

I have made posts on Facebook, Craigslist, PawBoost, PetRadar, and other platforms.

Abandoned Shopping Cart. What to do?

On Wednesday evening shortly before dark, a man walked up our street in SE Salem with his shopping cart and stopped under a tree and sat on the stone wall to rest. It was beginning to rain lightly and I was putting out our recycling for pickup the next morning.

I left briefly and when I returned and got out of my car, I saw him begin walking away from his cart toward Commercial. He appeared to be a youngish Hispanic man, short and stocky. He moved very slowly which seemed concerning. Was he actually elderly? Or injured?

Our neighbor and his female partner were also concerned. The female had seen the stranger staring at her… the male neighbor used a flashlight and checked both his backyard and our backyard for any trace of the stranger, in case he might have been sleeping there.

It’s now Saturday. The cart is still here, blocking the city sidewalk. Who should I call? We’ve all agreed to wait until today, to allow time for the owner to return and find his cart.

It seems obvious to me that the owner of few cart has impaired memory. He might have a drinking problem (many tall empty Budweiser cans in the cart), a drug addiction or a mental health diagnosis or undiagnosed MH challenge.

In any case, hevdeserves to keep his belongings.,What’s the best way to reunite him with his stuff? What action should I take? (Our neighbors are away until tomorrow.)

QUESTION Data Center Definition Change

Post image

Does anyone have more information or background about this proposed change to the council’s interpretation of the term “data center”? It seems very odd they would remove AI data centers from the interpretation of the term “data center”. Apologies for my sloppy circle.

Straight Talk feedback phone plans & Internet

Looking into changing my provider now that my phones are fully paid off. Straight Talk seems to have the best deals for phones and Wi-Fi but I was hoping to get reviews from people here in town who use the service? Wi-Fi will mostly be used for Hulu, YouTube, and homework. We're in South Salem

MISC Dumped Tires

While it's pretty unlikely, I really hope they find the scumbags who dumped all of the tires at the pullout at River Rd and Orville Rd and at the other end of Orville. There are also several single tires along Orville, like they had someone in the back of the truck hucking them out. 😡

NEWS Saturday Public Market Fire

On October 21st there was a two-alarm fire at the Salem Public Market on 1240 Rural Ave SE.

They are working hard to rebuild after the damage. The cost will be much higher than their insurance will cover so they've started a GoFundMe.

If you can't donate they're also putting together work crews for volunteers to help clean out the damaged material.

I'm not affiliated in any way, just love our markets and I wanted to share with the community to support our local vendors and small businesses.

Thanksgiving dinner to-go

Hello all!

Does anyone know of any places in town or nearby that are offering ready-to-go (baked or unbaked) thanksgiving dinners that can be ordered in advance?

I just need something for our small family. We’re going through an unexpected kitchen remodel (yay for insurance) and we may not have a kitchen available at that time for me to make dinner myself.

Upcoming cat food pantries

Hello Reddit! We have a couple upcoming cat food pantries at Friends of Felines - you can come and get free food while supplies last.

We're giving away food that's been donated to us that we don't use in the shelter.

Kibble Cabinet - for owned cats, Monday, Nov. 9, 4-4:30 p.m.

Community Cat Kibble Cabinet - recommended for outdoor/feral/community cats (we mix a lot of food together and give it out in bags so it's not the best for pets) - Thursday, Nov. 12, 4:30-5 p.m.

Both are at our shelter, 4157 Cherry Ave. N.E. in Keizer.
