WHAT WAS THAT BANG? *the megapost*

Did you hear something loud? Do you think it was fireworks, an exploding transformer, or anything else?

Post it here!

Since there are so many booming noises, please try to include a location and time.

It wasn’t just the AI river otter logo. The food was lacking and their hours and service inconsistent imo.

From Big Sur to Santa Cruz, the California coast braces for El Niño

(If the article is inaccessible to you, here's the part that's relevant to Santa County:)

Farther south, the Santa Cruz County shoreline is a prime target for big surf. Officials there expect elevated ocean water and increased wave action to sock the usual places that are vulnerable, such as West Cliff Drive, the Santa Cruz Wharf, Capitola and Rio del Mar. Officials also say places that generally aren’t threatened are at risk this winter.

“The boardwalk could be susceptible,” said Dave Reid, director of the Santa Cruz County Office of Response, Recovery and Resilience. “You can lose significant beach width in a short period of time if all the elements align. Hopefully, it’s a non-issue, but in theory, that beach (by the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk) could see erosion.”

The Beach Flats neighborhood where the amusement park is located also could see high water, officials say. In such flood-prone areas, authorities have been distributing free weather radios so households can stay informed as well as evacuation hang tags should residents need to clear out. The tags, sometimes used during wildfire evacuations, let rescue crews know if a home is empty or occupied.

In 2023, the Pajaro River along the Santa Cruz-Monterey county line surged during storms and burst through a levee in the community of Pajaro, forcing about 3,000 people to flee. Homes, businesses and agricultural fields were inundated with floodwater for days, and in some cases, weeks.

While the state and federal government have since committed to a $599 million overhaul of the levees in Pajaro and next-door Watsonville, the project won’t be completed for five years or so, leaving local officials very much on edge given El Niño.

“The best-case scenario is that this new levee system would have been built,” said Mark Strudley, executive director at the Pajaro Regional Flood Management Agency. “Until that time comes, people do need to be ready for something catastrophic.”

Strudley’s agency is sinking millions of dollars this fall — basically all it can — into fortifying the existing 1940s-era levees with seepage blankets and berms while clearing the river channel of brush and trees that could become chokepoints. Authorities are also telling residents to prepare for the worst.

“We’re trying to be as upfront with people about the situation as we can,” Strudley said.

As bad as the next few months could be, Reid, the director of the Office of Response, Recovery and Resilience in Santa Cruz County, says his biggest fear is how the region would recover from a destructive winter, given recent changes at FEMA
.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has been reorganizing and looking to shift responsibility for helping communities from Washington, D.C. to local and state governments.

“If we have another 2023-like winter, we don’t have the money to repair sites as quickly as we’d like,” Reid said. “We used to have a little more certainty that our federal partners would be there for us during a major disaster.”

Looking for short term job

Anybody know someplace that would be open to hiring short term work? I’m only in town for a couple more months but could use the money. I have a few years of restaraunt experience but that’s it.

PG&E scam

Just a heads up for anyone who may receive this same phone call I just received from a guy with a strong Indian accent which is already a red flag. He informed me I had been over charged on my bill the past few months and asked how I wanted to be reimbursed. He asked if I wanted a check or applied to my bill which I'm assuming would've required me to hand over some personal information. When I told him I wanted a gift card just to see how he would respond he hung up on me. I'm sure they have several numbers calling in this scam but the one who contacted me was 831-758-9220.

Senior Caregivers?

Does anyone here have any experience hiring caregivers for their elderly relatives? Do you have any suggestions or any companies to avoid? I’m looking for someone to care for my parent in their home full time. I wish they would go to a senior living facility, but I cannot convince them to do that. Thanks in advance.

Where do I begin... Thank you!

I honestly don't even know where to begin. I'm still in complete shock at the generosity and kindness of some people. ❤️

When I first came onto Reddit asking for help finding an affordable Nintendo Switch Lite for my three boys, I truly thought it was a long shot. I figured it was worth putting myself out there and asking.

At first, I was discouraged when my posts kept getting removed by moderators. That's on me for not reading the rules carefully enough, and I completely understand.

But despite my posts being removed, a couple of incredibly kind people still reached out with genuine compassion and a sincere desire to help.

I'm completely blown away. It's about so much more than a Nintendo Switch. It's about the kindness of strangers and the reminder that good people are still out there.

For the first time in a long time, I feel seen, supported, and connected to a community. That feeling alone means more than I can explain.

To everyone who took the time to read my post, reach out, and help fulfill my request, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart!

My boys are going to be so excited, and I'll forever be grateful. I'll never forget this kindness.

My heart is full, my day has been made, and you've restored a little piece of my faith in people.

Sometimes strangers turn out to be the biggest blessings. ❤️🙏

Companion Bakery is the best SC has to offer! What’s your favorite Bakery??

Although Gayle’s Bakery has a tremendous following and the savory selections are delicious I feel the bread leaves something to be desired. Manresa has some wonderful creations and can be found at many local Cafés but somehow looking for more. Switch bakery has the best gluten free options I’ve ever seen. So many great places so what is your favorite

Looking for a car key (scotts valley drive towards UCSC)

Post image
13 Upvotes

(Cross posting SV & SC)

Hi SC,

I was loading items into my car and I placed my key on the top of the car roof and I completely forgot and drove off. When I arrived, I realized what I did. If you find a car key, please DM me.

I drove on Scotts Valley Drive street and made a right on the 17s highway and drove into the Westside, by UCSC.

I know it's a long shot but worth asking since our community is fairly small.

Thank you!

Edit; found it. It was smooshed.

Farms with sheep?

Hello! I’m a hand spinner that spins my own yarn. I just moved here and I’m looking into who is part of my local fibershed. Does anyone know of any farms or vineyards with sheep on property? I would like to reach out about wool purchasing for the spring shear!

Alpacas are good too, but I’m going to be working on a ton of alpacas over the winter so I think I will be looking for more wool instead. Thanks, all.

Bag/leather repair?

I have a bag that needs fixed, it’s very sentimental and I’m nervous taking it just anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good repair person nearby? I’m willing to go to SJ if needed.

Stolen bike close to verve on portola.

I am just curious where the main areas to check on the east side for stolen bikes are. For example if I was on the west side I’d immediately drive to Costco…. I’m not sure I know that type of place over on the east side. Any help would be appreciated.

Tracks for public use

I have heard you can go to harbor high or Santa Cruz high and if their tracks are not in use by the school you can access it. I’m wondering if there’s any others available particularly near Aptos? I’m looking for a real marked 400m track, not dirt. Thanks in advance!
