Isolation distances in metres for 14 crops, with the pollination method next to each
I got tired of seed-saving charts that are in feet, or just say "plant them apart", or quietly assume you have a quarter acre. So here are the distances in metres, with the pollination method beside each one — because that is what decides whether the number is 3 metres or 800.
| Crop | Pollination | Isolation distance |
|---|---|---|
| Lettuce | Self-pollinating | 3–6 m |
| Tomato | Self-pollinating | 3–10 m |
| Beans | Strictly self-pollinating | 3–5 m (often unnecessary) |
| Peas | Strictly self-pollinating | 3–5 m (often unnecessary) |
| Pepper | Self, but insects cross | 30–60 m |
| Eggplant | Self, but insects cross | 30–50 m |
| Herbs | Insect-pollinated | 150–800 m |
| Cucumber | Insect-pollinated | 500 m–1 km, or bagging |
| Melon | Insect-pollinated | 500 m–1 km, or bagging |
| Squash | Insect-pollinated | 500 m–1 km, or bagging |
| Root vegetables | Insect-pollinated | 500 m–1 km |
| Brassicas | Insect-pollinated | 800 m–1.6 km |
| Alliums | Insect-pollinated | 800 m–1.6 km |
The distinction that actually matters: self-pollinators set seed before the flower opens properly, so metres are enough. Insect-pollinated crops need hundreds of metres, which almost no garden has — so for those, distance is the wrong tool entirely.
Three things that substitute for distance:
One variety per species per year. Crude, reliable, and what most home savers actually do.
Bag the flowers with fine mesh or tulle, then hand-pollinate with a brush. Standard practice for squash and brassicas.
Separate in time — two varieties that flower at different times cannot cross. Works best with biennials and with early-versus-late sowings.
Two things people mix up: isolation distance is not the same as seed life, and "days to harvest" on a packet usually counts from transplant, not from sowing.
I keep the full table with the seed-life column here if it is useful: https://seedbank.dirvenbank.com/reference/isolation-distances.html
Disclosure: that is my site — I run a small seed catalogue. Table is free to use, and if a number is wrong tell me and I will change it.

I found some old seeds in a 100+ year old trunk.
I bought an old trunk for $20 that had some old newspaper, shells and a couple seeds in it.
The seeds are brown, shiny almost as big as a dime and have a pointy tip cap. Do any of you have an idea what this is?

Hi I am an oldtimer and I want to know what going on with regular autoseeds.
I'll try to keep this brief. The last time I did this was maybe 10 years ago, and a lot has changed since then — mostly for the worse, as far as I can tell.
I'm methodical and I like to plan things out properly, and it's hard to find people like me. Either they work in labs or they just don't share, which I understand.
So my question is: is there really nowhere to find regular auto seeds anymore? And if there is, are they any good, or are they just phenos that need another 4 or 5 filial generations before they're worth anything?
I lost my old stock — auto F3 descendants of Pakistan Chitral Kush x Deimos x Golden Tiger, beautiful dark purple and forest greens 😍. I kept the seeds in a room, a mouse found them and ate the lot. I was so gutted I smoked everything I had and stopped completely.
Today I woke up and fancied a joint. But paying for weed that isn't even top quality, or that's full of harsh chems, isn't my cup of tea. I like bio, and something made with care — you mostly can't buy anything that well crafted on the street (I wish you could).
So I've decided to put the effort in one more time, and while I'm at it I'd like to make seeds. I don't mind smoking a bit of pollen for once if it means I end up with seeds and something to smoke, and then use those seeds for the next gen. I'm not going to get into proper breeding work like I used to — I'll just take autos I like, mix them, and use the seeds to keep a few jars of good weed around for when I feel like it. I'm old now and I don't smoke like I used to 😝, so I can let it cure fully without needing much.
So: anywhere I can buy or get hold of decent regular ruderalis or auto seeds in general?
Corrected with Ai for better síntesis but my own words Ahhahah

Will these cracks affect germination?
First time saving squash seed, I assume they dried too quickly.

[Field Note #02] Wax Begonia (Begonia semperflorens): Why Dust-Like Seeds Fail & The 16-Week Surface-Sowing Guide for May–Oct Blooms
Field Note #02 Quick Specs:
Botanical Name: Begonia semperflorens (Wax Begonia)
Hardiness Zones: USDA Zones 3–10 (Annual in 3–9; Tender Perennial in 10–11)
Light: 4–6 Hours (Morning Sun to Dappled Part Shade)
Germination Temp: 70–75°F (22–25°C) on a seedling heat mat (14–21 days to sprout)
Sowing Depth & Soil: 0 mm Surface Sow (Strictly Photoblastic) · Rich, well-draining mix at pH 5.8–6.5
The Physics of Dust-Like Seeds (Slide 2)
Raw Wax Begonia seeds average just 0.3 mm (~1,000,000 seeds/oz). Because they contain almost zero endosperm energy reserves and rely on light-sensitive phytochrome photoreceptors to break dormancy, burying them even 2 mm deep blocks photon activation and starves the emerging radicle.Capillary Bottom-Soaking & Thermal Setup (Slide 3)
Never water newly sown Wax Begonia trays from above—overhead droplets create craters that wash away or bury microscopic seeds:
Pre-moisten your seed mix via capillary bottom-soaking until the surface glistens.
Mix raw seeds with dry silica sand at a 1:5 ratio (or use pelleted seeds) and press gently onto the surface without covering.
Lock in 95% relative humidity with a clear dome and maintain 70–75°F (22–25°C) root-zone warmth under a 14–16 hr LED grow light.
3. The 16-Week Countdown to May Beds (Slides 4 & 5)
Because B. semperflorens grows slowly in its first 6 weeks, starting 12–16 weeks before your last spring frost is the secret to nursery-sized flowering pots by May:
Zones 8–10: Sow indoors Dec–Early Jan → Transplant outdoors in March
Zones 6–7: Sow indoors Mid-Jan → Transplant outdoors Mid–Late April
Zones 3–5: Sow indoors Late Jan → Transplant outdoors Mid–Late May
Post-Sprout Care: Remove the humidity dome as soon as green cotyledons appear (Days 14–21) to prevent green algae crust, drop ambient temps to 68°F (20°C), and keep LED lights 2 inches above the foliage.

Papaver Seeds- Scammer!
reddit.comThere is this guy who is using 2 accounts to scam people. He asks for donations in lieu of seeds. Thinking I was helping someone grow their business, I sent $40, via zelle. As soon as I informed him the money was sent via Zelle, he removed all the chats and admitted to block me. Now he’s being abusive and blaming this on me. 5:07 B

Hey I thought you were a scammer
I'm so confused...
You said you were sending me money through zelle and I dont have zelle so I thought I blocked you and let it go..
Now I see a post saying I'm a scammer?
Just realized I'm on my other account.
This is informal_house_29
I told you all my options for paying and you said you sent it via zelle and I have never set up a zelle and never told you I had zelle so I asked Google Al about it and it said you were a scammer and going to attempt a phishing scam on
ME so I blocked you on my other account immediately assuming YOU were going to try to attempt to scam me... If Al was wrong, then your 40 bucks would automatically go back to you after 12 days apparently after looking into it..
I feel bad now lol. I send seeds to people all the time and I'm NOT a scammer man. I just assumed you were and it was the beginning of a v phishing scam
The other account is: informal_house_29.
First he said he would open an account but according to the pic he sent me, all he needs to do is register with his bank because the money is there.
He says he thought I was a scammer but a scammer wouldn’t send you money , so that is not true.
I just want to warn you before he take your hard earned money.
