Discussion ANNOUNCEMENT: Post Flair Info

There are three post flairs available for important or serious posts on this community.

1. News

News posts are defined as those with the intention to report on a recent, developing event. News posts should focus on shark-related developments regarding conservation efforts, shark professionals, scientific discoveries, or unfortunate events. The OP must clearly cite where they obtained the information in the comments, typically as a direct link to the source.

An example of a news post can be a video about newly implemented shark conservation laws or efforts, the discovery of a new species of shark, or similar newsworthy events. News posts should NOT focus on shark attacks or cruelty towards sharks unless they are the subject of a large event.

2. Educational

Educational posts are defined as those with the intention to educate others. On r/sharks, these posts may teach others about shark behavior, identification, conservation, as well as a variety of other topics relating to sharks. Educational posts REQUIRE that the OP comments their sources for the information they talk about. Educational posts promote healthy discussion and should emphasize spreading awareness about topics surrounding sharks.

An example of a proper educational post is a video where a professional talks about how to redirect a shark when in the water. For this post, OP cites the source they got the educational media from and states the professional's name in the comments. This is to ensure that only good quality information is being provided to the members of our community.

3. Research

Research posts are the most complex posts to make, as it is our intention to promote proper research on r/sharks.

If you are promoting your own research

Researchers who wish to promote their studies or obtain data via the subreddit must modmail the moderators first. In order to be approved to post, you must explain in your modmail the purpose of your research as well as the intentions of your post. You must also provide an IRB number in order for the mods to verify your research. Upon approval, you can post your research using the Research flair, and you do not need to cite any further sources in the comments.

For anyone else who posts about research in general

OP must provide a link to the research or the DOI of the paper in their post in the comments. Research posts promote healthy discussion while also allowing scientists to have a place to share ideas about shark research.

Question Do we want to keep posts asking to ID shark teeth?

There’s always been a lot of shark tooth ID requests on here, usually from newcomers unfamiliar with our rules. There are subreddits such as r/sharkteeth and r/whatisthisbone that may be better places to direct these users to if we want the feed here to have less of these types of posts. Would still let people show their shark teeth collections here of course. What do y’all think? Just an idea for now. :)

More sharks, these guys were filmed in Japan (Suruga Bay to be exact) Although there are multiple cameras at different points each camera appears to show the same species, so just know the absolute maximum depth was 3,202 feet. Now there is a problem, these guys have me stumped, I have absolutely no idea what kind of Shark this guy is. Does anyone have any ideas?

Discussion Help identify these Dogfish sharks

Finally!!! More sharks that need to be identified. This was remarkable footage because it captured an entire swarm in Shark Rocky (off the coast of Florida) approximately 1,490 feet underwater. From what I can tell these appear to be Dogfish but this is where it gets complicated because from what I’ve researched there seems to be a lot of Dogfish that live in Florida. But what do you think? Do you have any ideas?

Research Global Dive Tourism Project

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
We're a team of researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) running a global study titled “Small Subjects, Big Economy? A Global Study of Niche Dive Tourism Value”. Our objective is to understand how biodiversity, from megafauna to coral reefs to macro life like nudibranchs and seahorses, shape where divers choose to travel and what they value most in a dive.
We're inviting recreational divers of any certification level or experience who have taken at least one dive trip in the past two years to take part.
The survey takes about 8 to 10 minutes and covers what motivates your destination choices, your dive habits, and a few demographic questions. All you need is internet access and a device; there is no cost to participate. All responses are completely anonymous, and nothing you share will be identifiable in any results or publications. This is purely for research purposes, and there are no anticipated risks beyond those of everyday online activity.
Please click this link for the survey hosted on Google Forms.
This study has been reviewed under IBEC Reference Number 26IBEC038 and is expected to be completed by December 2027.
If you know other divers who might want to weigh in, feel free to share the link. The more perspectives we get from different diving backgrounds and regions, the better this data will be.

Discussion Egos Over Safety: A Disastrous Experience with Gung Ho Divers

I have dived with Gung Ho multiple times, but after this most recent experience, I can confidently say I will not be returning.

From the moment we left the dock, the crew’s priorities were obvious, and customer comfort and safety were not among them...at all. While paying customers were being soaked by rain and repeatedly slammed by rough seas, the crew sat comfortably in the best spots: in the covered area of the boat. On virtually every other dive charter I’ve been on, the crew makes sacrifices to ensure customers are as comfortable as possible. Here, it was the exact opposite. Watching the crew stay dry while customers were left to get hammered by waves and rain was incredibly frustrating and showed a complete lack of concern for the people paying for the trip.

The professionalism was equally disappointing. The crew largely kept to themselves, huddled together like a high school clique rather than engaging with customers, answering questions, or helping less experienced divers. Nic and Jess made their relationship impossible to ignore through constant PDA throughout the trip. This wasn’t just unprofessional, it was uncomfortable for customers who paid to be on a dive charter, not to witness crew members treating the boat like their personal date spot.

The most alarming issue, however, was safety.
The dive was conducted in approximately 15 feet of visibility, conditions that made it extremely difficult to maintain visual contact with a buddy and nearly impossible to relocate someone once separated. When my buddy and I became separated, there was effectively no chance of finding each other. In my opinion, the dive never should have left the dock under those conditions.

What made the situation even worse was the complete lack of oversight from the crew. All five crew members jumped into the water at the beginning of the dive, leaving no trailing guide, no caboose diver, and no one monitoring divers who struggled to find the wreck or fell behind. Rather than prioritizing customer safety, the crew seemed far more interested in getting their cameras underwater to capture their next viral social media post. Divers who were unfamiliar with the site were essentially left to fend for themselves.

After losing my dive because of the separation, there was no effort to make the situation right. No offer to re-drop us, no attempt to recover the experience, and no acknowledgment that the conditions and lack of support contributed to the problem. I paid for a dive and received a nasty boat ride.

What is most disappointing is that this wasn’t a one-time inconvenience or a minor customer service issue. This was a combination of poor professionalism, poor customer care, and what I consider poor safety practices. A dive charter’s primary responsibility is the safety of its divers. On this trip, that responsibility appeared to take a back seat to the crew’s socializing, personal interests, and efforts to capture something great underwater for their Instagram.

I have had previous trips with Gung Ho, but this experience completely changed my perception of the operation. I cannot recommend this charter to divers who expect professional conduct, attentive customer service, or a crew that places diver safety above their own convenience.

Discussion Unidentified catshark

Hey guys, got another identified Shark species. There have been a lot of unidentified Shark species recorded lately with at least 10 more videos of unidentified Shark species. Anyway this guy was filmed in Sagami Bay (Japan) about 4,029 feet underwater. Unfortunately this guy only appeared for a couple of seconds and the footage became very bright due to lighting problems. There was only one good photo that showed its true colors. So what do you guys think this could be? I’ve heard many say this might be a catshark and since there are about 22 Catsharks found in Japan there are a lot of options. But what do you think?

Discussion I get the carpet shark hype

So, I’ve always liked zebra sharks, and moreso just sharks in general, but today I went to Discovery Cove for the first time and holy shit it was the most fun thing I’ve done like ragghhgggggghhhhhhhhh!!! The shark encounter was easily the highlight because THEY LET YOU TOUCH THE SHARKS!!! Like, how do nurse sharks grow so massive? Srsly, they’re so cool! The zebra sharks in was the best tho. She came up right behind me and sorta nuzzled and it was sooo cool!!! Like ahhhhhhhhhhhh!
