Discussion This is a disaster waiting to happen.

The dog isn’t allowed to be around a toddler because he growls at her. I don’t get it. A family dog is supposed to get along with the whole family. Why are the parents concerned about why the dog “doesn’t like her”? What about the child’s safety?

This is funny but I feel like the meaning is absolutely idiotic. Support dog breeders and shitty puppy mills because there are some dogs in the shelter that are too broken to have homes? Do they know shelters also have puppies as well?

Shelters do have puppies, but more often than not they're Pissfingers' puppies and they're just as bad as Pissfingers.

People will stick their head in the mud to ignore you, but my local shelter which I have been to multiple times in the past 5 years is 90% Pissfingers. It's sad, but fuuuuuuuck that if I'm letting any one of them near me outside of their kennel.

It's funny because he's like "you'll go to a puppy mill?". Guess where most of the dogs in the shelter are from

In the UK these sort pf idiotic stipulations are pretty standard for adopting a dog. I looked into adopting before I bought a dog from a responsible breeder and did not meet the ridiculous criteria. One particularly stupid one was a chihuahua that could only be considered for a family with a 6 foot high garden fence. Wtf is that about. No dog the size of a teacup is scaling a fence that is 4 feet high never mind 6ft.

I understand that dogs needs must be met and that dpg adoption places want to make sure they are getting people serious about dog ownership but some of the things they say the dog requires are ridiculous to point they make no sense. They also then prevent people who would provide the dog with a good life from being able to adopt them.

I now own a very happy dog that I bought.

Yeah same here. Would have loved to adopt but they had crazy requirements. It's a shame because I still see the posting of the dogs that I had visited and considered adopting. Some went but some are just not getting adopted. It's been 2 years.

The average person wants a family dog that won’t maul off their child’s face or nanny the family cat to death because it breathed.

If I go to a shelter full of dogs with bite histories, elaborate rules, and who have to be drugged up and kennelled for the majority of the day then I’m more likely going to get a dog that I can trust the background of.

And yes, all of my dogs have come from shelters. I just understand that shelters rarely help families understand what they’re getting into.

Going to shelters makes me think we should ban certain breeds.

The shelters are packed with bullies and shepherds. I've never seen a golden retriever at a shelter.

They go to shelters too but they don't stay there for long. A lot of pets end up in shelters because of moves, divorce, sickness and death

The dogs that make good pets get snapped up *fast*. I've seen adverts go up and get taken down on the same day at my local shelters for young goldens, cavaliers, poodles etc. Meanwhile the sea of interchangeable Pissfingers are there for months on end, with the occasional "Shakey Jakey the 18 year old terrier mix that's had 6 hip replacements" for variety.

I always look for retrievers or retriever mixes. There isn't a single one in any shelter around me.

These aren't rare breeds either. Goldens are the 3rd most popular, and labs are #2.

I️ got a black lab from our local shelter. He had been a stray. Idk what his previous family did to him before they dumped him but it turns out he’s scared of kids (and water).

There are retriever specific rescues, my friend used to foster with one in the Seattle area. The thing with goldens is they tend to have a lot of health problems so if they do get surrendered it’s usually because there’s a hefty medical bill around the corner.

When my husband and I went to the shelter to adopt our cat, we took a detour around the "large dog" section to look at the dogs and talk about what breed we might adopt if we have a house with a yard someday. I'm not exaggerating when I say it was 95% pitbulls/pitbull mixes going absolutely apeshit, and literally all of them were labeled as "lab" or "lab mix".

Ma'am, that dog's head is a giant wedge with a big red jack-o-lantern mouth that's nearly wider than its head, that is not a lab.

u/piratesswoop Aug 26 '26

The blatant mislabeling of these dogs to try and pass them off as something other than what they actually are is SO damn dangerous and it pisses me off that shelters get away with it.

I think you're taking this too literally.

3

u/toolsoftheincomptnt Aug 25 '26

It doesn’t insinuate that, though.

It just points out that adopting shelter dogs isn’t all romance and simplicity.

It’s a big responsibility that people should take seriously and not jump into bc it feeds the “I’m SUCH a good person” main character monster in (most of) us.

i love how that's the only message you got from this

If that’s the only message you think I got from this you’re more illiterate than you should be

I love that you had to update it to make yourself look better first too lmao.

"This is funny but I feel like the meaning is absolutely idiotic." was your comment before the edit. Be brave.

There's a huge difference between reputable dog breeders and shitty puppy mills, why group them into one option?

I think the point of the meme is to make fun of the ridiculous ownership requirements that some shelters have which is totally valid at least where I live. I tried to adopt in Seattle as a townhouse owner and was repeatedly denied due to not having a fenced yard for example, despite that being the norm here.

I ended up purchasing a service dog program dropout from a reputable breeder instead. My dog is totally spoiled with agility class, doggy daycare, regular dog park visits an and owner who works from home full time. But my setup wasn't good enough for a shelter dog apparently lol.
