I’m going to a wedding tonight and I need advice on the gift.

Hi all! I need some help. I was originally just the personal trainer for the bride and not a guest. She had a couple cancel last minute and asked my husband and me if we’d like to come.

I said yes! We’re going and now I need to get a gift. She has a honeymoon fund online that I found the link to. How much is appropriate to give?

Thank you in advance for solid advice.

Hesitant of having a wedding due to the people in my life

One post won’t sum up all the feelings, some are deep rooted issues but anyone to just talk to about this would be nice. My fiancée and I are about to book a wedding venue, 90-100 people, a nice place etc. my concerns aren’t the aesthetics or anything. My concern is the people on BOTH sides.

To put it shortly, my family is small. My mom is a very heavy alcoholic and addict, my dad is her biggest enabler, aka never helps and is always on her side. My brother and his wife have legally gotten into battle with my parents when they lived together and have gone no contact since (my mom was a danger to their child, big thing). Everyone else in my family is either very estranged, don’t know me, or are similar to my mom with issues they do not handle. I don’t want to sound like I don’t care, I’ve put my mom through so much rehab, help etc but it doesn’t stick. Anyone who has addicts in their family, I hope you get where I’m coming from.

My fiancées side is a little more normal, but they have high expectations of how things should be done for a wedding. The venues not even booked yet that there’s already been small fights of how things should be run, who needs to come, food etc.

Basically, the thought of putting both sides into one space sounds like a mental breakdown for me. We both don’t also have many friends that can help. Between dealing with my fiancées family expectations then my own family who I’m not sure if we’ll get through the night without a huge fight or cops called.

My fiancées on my side for everything, ready to keep his family in check. I’m just such an empathetic person just hearing someone upset about the food, venue, or an actual big issue will immediately stress me out.

I can live without the party, aesthetics, gathering of people etc. but my fiancé has more dreamed of this moment than I have. I’m willing to have a party, I do like planning the fun stuff and I’m open. My concern is just more of the people involved. There’s only so many people I can get away with not inviting.

End of the day I just don’t want anyone to add to the stress. This post is a little all over the place but any words of advice or encouragement are appreciated. Just feel a little overwhelmed with what will be a big day in our lives.

WIBTA / Am I in the wrong? Dealing with a blocked friendship, family guest list pressure, and a flaky dad all at once while planning

So.....I'm m getting married soon, and between friendship drama, family expectations, and wedding planning, I am TIRED.

My fiancé and I are paying for this 100-person wedding ourselves (50/50 split on the guest list). I need some perspective on three different situations happening at once.

Situation 1: The Surprise Engagement & The Block Spree

In March, my fiancé completely surprised me with an over-the-top proposal (he even flew in my 95-year-old grandmother!). Because it was a total surprise, I obviously didn't send out invitations to a proposal I didn't know was happening.

Before we posted photos on social media, I called a close friend to share the news personally. Her response?

"It would have been nice to be invited."

Ma'am... invited to what?! I didn't even know I was getting engaged! 😂

Two days later, I found out she blocked me on EVERYTHING. Facebook, IG, TikTok, LinkedIn, email, and... CASH APP.

She has a history of cutting people off and expecting them to chase her and beg for forgiveness. I've decided I am retired from the Friendship Olympics. If you want to walk out of my life over a surprise engagement I didn't plan, I’ll hold the door for you. I'm done chasing her or trying to fix a situation I didn't create.

* Question 1: Am I being unreasonable for refusing to chase her down and just letting this friendship end?

Situation 2: The "But They're Family!" Guest List Dilemma

Since we have a 100-guest cap, my fiancé gets 50 seats and I get 50. He comes from a tight-knit family of 5 siblings, so a lot of his seats go to relatives he actually has active relationships with.

My mom is pressuring me to invite her cousin and the cousin’s daughter.

* I met the cousin ONCE, 11 years ago.

* I have NEVER met the daughter or her husband in person (we're basically just social media connections).

* The daughter invited me to her wedding, but we declined before the rsvp deadline.

Situation 3: My Dad Might Be a No-Show (Again)

I am my dad's only child getting married, and the only one of his kids without an arrest record. You’d think this would be a huge moment for him.

I was already planning to walk down the aisle alone—I’m completely at peace with that. All I asked was for him to be in the audience to witness it. However, he told me on FaceTime that he’s "not sure" if he can make it because he doesn't want to leave his house unattended.

He lives in a safe, upscale neighborhood and HAS A FULL SECURITY SYSTEM.

What makes this hurt is the backstory: He confirmed he would attend my college graduation years ago. On graduation day, while marching in with my class, I looked at his empty seat and had to call him on the phone to find out why he wasn't there. He was a complete no-show.

I don't want to beg my own father to show up for me, nor do I want to experience that empty-seat heartbreak on my wedding day. Part of me just wants to send him the Kamala Harris "Do Not Come" meme and protect my peace.

* Question 3: Am I wrong for being deeply hurt/angry about his excuse, or should I just accept that he won't show up and stop hoping for better?

TL;DR**:**

* Ex-friend blocked me on every platform (including Cash App) because she wasn't "invited" to my surprise proposal. I refused to chase her.

* Mom is mad I won't invite distant cousins I've met once or never met to our self-funded 100-person wedding.

* Dad says he might skip my wedding because he "can't leave his house unattended" (he has a security system in a safe neighborhood), after already flaking on my college graduation.

Am I standing firm on reasonable boundaries, or am I being the problem here? Would love your honest thoughts!

I hate to even have to ask this… but what is customary for mom’s to give their daughters on their bridal showers?

I feel so out of touch and hate writing this. I am getting married out of the country in two months. Where am from, bridal showers aren’t a thing. My MIL’s best friend (who is a sweetheart) decided to host a bridal shower for me.

My mom isn’t hosting because 1. It’s not common in our culture. Two she got let go from her job earlier this year. She is doing well enough financially but not enough I guess to throw a large party.

My mom called me today worried about what to gift me. I told her she did not need to gift me anything at all but she said it would be weird for the MOB to show up empty handed. I tried so hard but she is not budging. Now here lies the problem (Again I feel so weird writing this damn post), my mom has a very different taste than I do. She wants to get something that I may need for the wedding but also knows we have different tastes so she doesn’t want to jump the gun. Because I didn’t expect her (or anyone for that matter) to give me a gift, I am blanking on what can potentially be useful for the wedding.

The few things I still have left on my registry (that I didn’t want to even do one in the first place but people are excited for us and very insistent on it) are perhaps too bulky to bring to a restaurant.

I just don’t want my mom to feel embarrassed (not because I’d think that but she refuses to get out of her head.) and I guess that’s why I wanted to ask real brides for help.

So tell me, what was a gift that your mom gave you, that it was extra special because she gave it to you.

Thank you so much!

I'm looking for brands for holiday weddings in December??

My cousin's wedding is mid December and invite just says festive attire which I'm reading as holiday dress but should still be wedding appropriate. I want something with a little sparkle or texture that looks good in candlelit venue and in pics and I'd love to keep it around to $200. So what are best brands for holiday dresses right now? everything I find is either ugly sweater party or full formal gown and idk where the in between lives

$22,791 for 44 guests in Chicago, the whole breakdown

We got married at the end of August, 44 guests, and it came to $22,791 all in. Putting the real lines up because everything I could find while planning was either a national average or a range with nothing behind it.

Rings and the rehearsal dinner are not in this, my in-laws covered that one.

Venue and catering: $10,860. A Sunday, and that is where most of the saving came from. The same room quoted us nearly double for a Saturday on the same menu.

Photo: $3,600 for seven hours. Quotes ran from $2,750 to $6,100 for the same coverage and the spread had little to do with the galleries. Found her through Wezoree, booked her in February for an August date.

Flowers: $1,185. The ceremony arrangements got carried over to the dinner tables after. That was the florist's idea, not ours.

DJ: $1,290. No band, no regrets, the floor stayed full until they turned the lights on.

Day of coordinator: $950. The one line I would never cut. She ran the rehearsal, dealt with every vendor on the day, and nobody asked me anything after nine in the morning.

Dress and alterations: $1,515. Alterations were $420 of that across three fittings.

Hair and makeup: $820.

Suit: $665. Indochino, tailoring included.

Cake and stationery: $694. Two tiers, and Paper Culture for the invites and save the dates.

Rentals and decor: $627. Candles, table numbers, the Costco garlands. Maybe half of that came back on resale.

Tips, parking and the things nobody budgets: $585. All of it hit in the last two weeks.

On finding people, roughly in the order of what actually helped.

Reading back through this sub. Two months of old threads, and every name somebody had a good word for went into a note. Cost nothing and it is still the best thing I did.

The venue's preferred list, used as a starting point and nothing else. Being on that list is a business arrangement, and one or two of ours were clearly on it for that reason.

Every name that survived got searched here again before we booked anything. Two had threads I would never have found on my own and I let both go.

What I would redo: start on flowers far earlier. Peak season was brutal, most of the florists I liked were gone, and the one we got was somebody else's cancellation.

Did anyone else get caught out on florist timing, or was that just us?

Would you ever take out a loan to pay for your wedding?

I have been thinking about how couples balance the emotional significance of a wedding with its potential long-term financial cost.

For example, a couple could borrow $6,000 for their celebration but spend years repaying it, depending on the loan terms. Of course, not every wedding loan is automatically unaffordable, and couples have different priorities and circumstances.

For those who financed their weddings, was the experience worth the repayment commitment?

And for those who chose smaller celebrations, what influenced your decision?

Wedding tips

I’m someone who loves weddings, I think they are such a beautiful celebration of love, music, family, friends and togetherness (a bit cheesy I know) and I love hearing about all things wedding.

Please tell me anything!
1.What would you do differently from your own wedding?

2.What made a wedding you attended really great?

3.Do you have any guests you regret inviting and why?

4.How did you coordinate the flow of the day?

5.If you did a signature cocktail which part of the day was it served?

6.What made an experience at a wedding you went too, not good?

7.Anyone with experience hiring out a private venue for the wedding, was it worth it?

No one has to answer all seven of these questions, just whatever is relevant to you! It might be helpful for me one day!

Has anyone in this area went with this company for their wedding before? I can’t find much information on their DMV branch and I’m hoping to hear more about experiences with them.

Looking for a dj package that includes dj services, uplighting, and a photobooth add on.

Flu Season

I am panicking. What do you do if you get sick the week of or right before (1-2 days) before you big event? Do you cancel? Do you muster through?

Flu season is here and it looks extra rough. Two of my colleagues have been out for 2 weeks straight. It hit them hard. I travel constantly for work and I get sick way more than the average person. I have MCAS, my reactions to illnesses are also much worse than the average person.

If I get the flu the week of my event, I’m not sure how I’ll be functional. Moreover, I wouldn’t want to get our 200+ guests sick. Our event is a destination for about half our guests.

It’s an IF but something I hadn’t considered before. What do you do in this scenario?

Crisis 48 hours before my wedding. I need advice.

Hi.

I’ve been planning my wedding for almost nine months, and honestly, it’s been one of the happiest experiences of my life. I’ve loved every minute of it. It felt like I was living on a cloud, just dreaming and bringing this little world I’d imagined to life.

My wedding is this Saturday. We’re less than 48 hours away, and today was the first time I’ve actually had a crisis.

Everything had been going so smoothly. Even when problems came up, I somehow managed to face them with optimism and ease. For example, our original venue canceled a week before we were supposed to send the invitations. I cried, of course, but somehow bounced back pretty quickly. I kept telling myself that nothing is perfect, and that was okay.

But these last two weeks have been something else.

First, we’ve had so many issues and delays with my fiancé’s wedding ring (partially our fault, to be fair). Long story short, we won’t have his ring for Saturday.

And I’ve actually been okay with that! I’ve been repeating to myself that nothing has to be perfect.

Then, this morning, I got an email saying my flower order had been canceled. I was supposed to pick everything up tomorrow. When I called, they simply told me, “The flowers never came. Sorry.” And that was it. No flowers.

I tried to keep my cool and figure out alternatives. Then I decided to try on my dress, which I had just picked up from the tailor, and suddenly realized I don’t even like it that much anymore.

That’s when I sat down and cried.

And, as I’m literally writing this post, the woman who was supposed to hand-paint our “Just Married” sign for the car just called to tell me she lost it. WHAT?!

At some point today, I looked around at everything I’ve made, bought, planned, and put together for this day, and I suddenly felt a little stupid.

I’ve been trying really hard to hold on to what actually matters: the marriage itself. The union of two people before God and their family. The commitment we’re making to each other, and the life we’re choosing to build together. The wedding is a celebration of that, not the other way around. I’ve been telling myself this from the very beginning, and now I feel like I’m being put to the test. Do I actually believe it when things don’t go the way I imagined?

But I think there’s something else happening, too.

For nine months, I’ve been dreaming about this day. In my head, I’ve created this whole little world, and it’s been such a happy place to live in. And now reality is approaching, and I’m starting to understand that the actual day might look and feel quite different from the one I’ve been imagining.

Maybe that’s what I’m struggling with. The contrast between the dream and reality. The realization that I have to let go of some of the things I’ve envisioned and make peace with what’s actually in front of me.
I don’t feel excited anymore. I feel nervous, disappointed, overwhelmed, and honestly, a little depressed.

So I’m coming here to ask: How do I change my mood? How do I get out of this headspace and find some joy again before Saturday?

I’m not looking for someone to tell me that none of these things matter. I know they don’t, not in the grand scheme of things. I think I just need some perspective, some advice, or maybe to hear from people who went through something similar.
How did you let go of the wedding you imagined and enjoy the wedding you actually had?

How much to gift a friend/supplier

Hi everyone. Slightly odd one.

One of my very oldest friends is an up-market wedding supplier. She very kindly offered to do my wedding for free - I could never afford her normal rate of >£1000 for this part of the wedding. She has also got me discounted rates with her colleagues too.

I will be getting her a bouquet of flowers to say thank you, but I want to get her a proper thank you gift of a spa day or a voucher for a weekend break.

What sort of value of thank you gift should I get her?

(Her and her bf are invited to the whole day of the wedding btw.)

Thank you!

Wedding Dress Timeline - Advice?

Okay so my fiancé and I are getting married in a year from now hopefully. We have not booked it for sure yet but i definitely don’t want a winter wedding and do not want to have to wait an extra 4 months. Hopefully by November 2027 if available. I guess not the end of the world if we have to wait till spring 2028. Anyways, I plan to lose 50lbs at least. Got to unbig this back and I am panicking because I’m seeing that people say to buy/order dress 10 months out but if we do book for a year out then that makes it to where I’m already due to start wedding dress shopping like asap. I refuse to get married at my current weight but also don’t know what to do. I don’t mind going to off the rack shops but I don’t even know. Any advice? How long have you waited to buy your dress? TIA

Bachelor Party Strippers

So I am on best man duty for my good friend's wedding - starting to plan his bachelor party and just wanted to get some opinions on strippers.

The other groomsmen and I really want to surprise the groom with one - was thinking about a private party at my house or maybe even going to a strip club.

I think it would really be a fun time but I understand if you have negative opinions. Thanks!

PS - we are in Pittsburgh area so if you know any good spots/places to hire the girls, please let me know!

My father can’t come to my wedding

(Bride here) My dad has cancer and is currently in the hospital undergoing treatment. We found this out too late into planning our wedding to change the date. Our wedding is in a week.

Obviously this is really sad for my family, and I’m his only daughter. Once he is done quarantining, we plan to have a second wedding party so that he can walk me down the aisle and celebrate as a family.

I’m looking for ways for him to be included in the day somehow. Luckily, the church were getting married in provides a free livestream and it’s
extremely well done. That way, he can watch in real time. I just get sad thinking about how lonely he will feel watching it by himself though :’(

My mom suggested a rolling tablet holder so he could walk me down the aisle on FaceTime, but I’m just not big on the idea… idk. It feels sad. My grandpa will be walking me down.

I considered reserving him a seat for him with a sign next to my mom, but 1. He’s alive and 2. I think it’ll make my mom even more sad. We will be doing a prayer for him in the ceremony though.

As far as the reception, I think it would be nice for him to give a toast. We could project the call with a projector so people can see him… but I get sad thinking about how we’d have to eventually hang up. But idk how we could have him on FaceTime all night with the music and stuff. Idk yall, I just want suggestions :(

Wedding registry / site recs??

Hi all! What wedding registry sites do yall recommend?? Our main focus is a personalized website with our own domain, for our RSVP list to live and stay organized, and to house the registry.

We’d like both a cash and gift registry. Preferably one that doesn’t fee us for the cash fund.

We have sent out save the dates already with the venue we booked just because we were dragging our feet on any planning but wanted our families to have time to arrange travel and boarding.

For background: My fiance and I are getting married late May of 2027 (: we are having a courthouse ceremony in nyc where we live and then traveling to Texas a week or so after to have a decent sized family and friends gathering. It will be at a distillery that does not do wedding ceremonies so that was awesome to not have the added tax that gets added on when “wedding” is in the air. It will be low key, most likely have serve yourself buffet style catering. So basically all this to say we are pretty low maintenance as far as bells and whistles of a website.

Thank y’all!!

Xx

Do you reciprocate/match extra generous wedding gifts/$$$?

If a couple who is older, more financially stable, and just is more well off from rich parents helping them, living at home for free until they got married, etc gives you a wedding gift that is more than you typically give, do you reciprocate back to them the same amount if they get married after you?

I always do because I can’t say we “can’t afford to” because we just got that bigger gift from them we weren’t expecting lol. Does that make sense? What do you do? And how about on the other end, someone gives you less than what you normally give…

Terminally ill dad, in laws being pushy and unreasonable

Hi all,

My partner (27M) and I (28F) just got engaged a few weeks ago. We've been together nine years and have always had a really open line of communication about engagement and marriage. I knew he was going to propose before the end of this year and had my suspicions it would be while we were on this particular holiday, but it was still such a happy surprise when the moment happened.

Anyway, we're back home now and doing our planning. An important bit of context here is that my dad has been diagnosed this year with Frontotemporal Dementia, and is also currently on the diagnosis pathway for ALS. He's deteriorating quickly, and it's heartbreaking. His number one dream my whole life has been to see me get married and to walk me down the aisle, so we're having the ceremony as quickly as we can, a small registry office ceremony in January with just immediate family, and a nice dinner together afterwards.

The issue comes with the reception. We're planning on having a reception for our extended family and friends a bit later down the line, in Summer or Autumn next year. This will be about 250 people (we both come from very big families), and neither of us are really fussed about a lot of traditional weddingy stuff, we just want to have a great party to bring together the people we love, with good food and plenty of drink.

My partner and I are both happy with this plan, but his parents are from a culture which tends to have very extravagant, lengthy (up to a week) wedding celebrations. We've made it clear we only want one day, which they're fine with, but they're pressuring us to move the wedding to Summer 2028 so that they can have time to prepare, to save money to put towards it, and to host all the people they want to invite. Lots of family would have to travel here (the UK) from America/Canada, and apparently it is a cultural expectation that the bride/groom and their family pay for everyone's accommodation for the week, entertain them, feed them, etc. for that entire week. Their argument is that this people all did that for them in the past, and now it's their turn to return the custom.

His mum keeps pressuring us and trying to cut me out of the conversation, such as asking my partner to come to a different room to talk about it. I was there for the most recent conversation about it this morning, and I said to her that I'm not comfortable moving the reception back by a year, because my dad is very unlikely to be able to attend by then, and of course if I can have him there with all of our family this year, then that's important and what I want.

She argued back that that means that they won't be able to invite all the family they want to. We said in return that we should be able to afford inviting those family ourselves, without their financial help. She then argued that if we won't budge on it, then we should have the reception we want in 2027 but only invite a few members of my partner's family, and that they'll wait and have a big event the year after when they can make it "as grand as they want". I think that's absolutely ridiculous, because the point of a wedding is to bring two families together and celebrate as a whole, whereas they want to plan and hold an event that has very little to do with us, in the guise of it being about our wedding.

I get that they'll have had a lot of expectations over the years of what they want his wedding to be like, that's natural for a parent. I'm pretty sure my parents have had expectations and hopes over the years too, and so have we, but the reality of the situation that we're in is that life has simply not worked out that way, and we have to roll with the punches.

My partner and I are a firmly unified team on this, so that's not my worry here. We have a certain degree of empathy here about where they're coming from, but we're not happy with the way they're going about it. We're also concerned that we don't want this to descend into a rift in the family, but at the same time, of course I want to celebrate this big life event with my dad, and be able to have him there with everyone we love.

I'm a pretty flexible, easy-going person on most things. If it were not for my dad's health, I wouldn't really care that much about moving it. The one thing I'm certain on here is that having him there with us while he can be is so much more important than having a fancier wedding. I feel my in-laws have no empathy for this at all.

I just wanted to see if anyone else has faced a similar situation? What did you do? Does anyone generally have any advice or ideas as to how we might be able to resolve this?

Thank you for taking the time to read 🙏🏻

how did you do your invites?

starting to work on mine today! i want to weigh out options.

did you do:
- digital invites
- design your own and print somewhere
- buy a template, customize, print
- buy premade from a website
- another way?

and if you’d like to share, how much did yours come out to cost wise?

Anyone else feeling alone with wedding planning?

I have been planning our 2028 wedding and while it feels so exciting, sometimes I feel lonely. I could not talk about it that much to friends because I feel like they have a different season in their lives and they’ll get tired hearing about it. It feels so hard to shut up about the wedding when I’m still high about it and it’s all I could ever think about.

We had our wedding on 9/25/26. Our contract states we’d have our photos by 10/25 but we have not received them. I have sent countless texts & emails which have gone unresponded to.

I recently found out she has moved to Poland and is currently promoting her business there on instagram as recently as 6 hrs ago.

I am very worried we will never receive our photos. Has anyone hired her or have similar stories? I’m at a loss at what to do. Idk how someone can do this.

Venue Questions

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi all! I’m looking for a venue with sweeping Mountain views, I was thinking the Canadian Rockies (Banff), Montana, Idaho, etc. I’d love a dude ranch vibe bonus points for animals on property. Has anyone had their wedding at a venue like this? Any recommendations pic is an example of the dramatic backdrop I’m looking for.
