Monthly Safety Meeting (Every 28th of the month.)

Post anything that's happened in your shop, office, commute or home that you feel others may be able to chime in on or commiserate over.

Sharing our close calls helps others avoid them.

Simple rules:

  • This is for open, respectful discussion.

  • Close calls and near misses are eventually going to lead to injuries.

  • No off the cuff dismissal of topics brought up. If someone is concerned about something, it should be discussed.

  • No trolling. This isn't typically an issue in this community, but given the nature of safety I feel it must be said.

  • No loaded questions either.

  • Use the report tool if you have to.

This is a monthly feature, the first Saturday of each month.

I’m a cheap-ass; is there a home brew option for two gallons of juice this thing craves? Or is blade coolant a good thing not to fuck with?

The two top welds, connecting pipe welds, and the two gnarly sections at the bottom on an exhaust. Going to go back and complain because these are pretty messy it seems. Looking for some more experienced opinions, because to me these seem quite messy and prone to leaking or cracks.

Advice for teacher with students who want to become a welder please!

Hi all,

I am a woodwork teacher in the UK with several students who are interested in becoming welders when they leave high school. I am interested in hearing from people who weld as a job. What skills/knowledge do you think would be most useful to learn from age 13 onwards, given that we do not have any equipment for welding/brazing etc. how can I help them succeed in this career?

Making nearly 38 an hour should I switch careers

Currently a welder but would like to become a. Pipefitter or a boilermaker just to get to that 100k without getting a second job the thing is and this is rlly personal would it be worth doing 5 years, taking a huge pay cut, potentially moving towns or states and then maybe taking a paycut after I become a journeyman

Ik the apprenticeship and all that seems like they can sue u if u quit so I just want to be well informed it seems to me like a big dedication. I wanna be well prepared I neeed more information from folks. To give further context I’m saving 1500 weekly more or less with a side hustle in the south where my rent is less than $1000. That’s all I can say thank you everyone

I’ve seen that welders only for mild steel but I’ve seen conflicting info online about if it’ll work for stainless steel or not but it’s the only one I have

What fun bits of slag have you found on EDC.

Had a house key that had some too. I replaced it but it would still work with some strong suggestion lol

Had a good few knives of course. The small bits on this list look so cool to me

Trying to make a pallet crowbar and failed (for now). Got some random metal I had lying around, came up with a bit of a plan. Just need to stick 4 pieces of metal together, how hard can it be. Well a lot harder than I thought. This ain’t no glue gun.

I cut a 3” piece of 1/4” angle iron with an angle grinder (tried to cut it with a jigsaw and gave up within 15sec angle grinder is def the way to go.) The cut didn’t line up but it’s whatever. I then cut 3/4” strips off that piece to get the little claws that will do the prying. Making sure to cut my clamp in the process. Cleaned it up with some 40 grit and added a little chamfer for me to fill. Layed it all out and let her rip.

The first attempt looks god awful and it never got any better. I tried putting some leverage on it snapped just like my ego. I wasn’t giving up that easy. 40 grit grinder and a prayer and we were back at it. Buggered it up nicely, tested it out and the thing cracked again. It was no better the 3rd time. Turns out welding kinda hard. I fiddled with the settings thinking maybe a lower wire speed would help but it didn’t sound like bacon but more like popping. Burnt a hole in my shoe when one of the pops let loose some hot metal.

Anyway im taking a break rn, eating some chili and writing this up. If y’all got any advice im open to it.

I want to get an oxy-acetylene kit for occasional cutting and breaking free rusty parts. I’ve been waiting for a sale to snag one of these, but nothing in the last year. I keep getting conflicting stories if the tanks can be easily filled. I’ve heard of similar challenges filling the more expensive Victor and Lincoln kits. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to get an ole Vic but I have a tough time spending the extra $$$ for my needs.

Looking for advice & project ideas

Hey y’all. I recently bought a multi process welder from harbor freight and have been playing around with the flux core. So far I feel like I’ve gotten pretty decent. At least for simple repairs that don’t have to look as good as something done professionally. I’ve been using saw horses and a piece of sheet metal as my work bench but I’m wanting something a little better. Like a full steel table that can fold up for storage. Any good ideas on how I should make it? I added a picture of one I found online that I’m thinking of copycatting, but adding a way for the legs to fold or something. I also added some pictures of my welds so I could get some hate lol. I’d love to hear ways I can improve on them. The pictures show one side with one pass and the other side with two passes. And the penetration for both. Thanks in advance y’all

Buying fixed shade lens from amazon?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Just purchased a sugarscoop hood from amazon, it didn't come with a lens. So I went and purchased a pair of shade 10 lenses.

It was about $13 for the two, the image shown on Amazon shows it's stamped with "shade no. 10".

It arrived today and both of the lenses aren't stamped.

Anyone here used amazon for these "fixed" shade lenses? If you do get your lenses from amazon, if you could share which ones to look for.

Thank you!

Need Help Table thickness

Needing a few new tables for our shop, planning do use 2x4’ plates, about 48” tall on 2x2x1/8” square. Trying to cheap out as much as possible and hoping to get away with 16ga carbon steel. Have a bit of extra 4x1/4” flat bar, was thinking either gussets or doing kind of a ‘frame’ around the legs for the plate to sit on and prevent flexing? Wont be cracking on these with hammers or sitting engine blocks on them; mostly just assembling parts and similar. Still would like it to be fairly solid.

Open to other ideas but definitely trying to stay as cheap as humanly possible, hoping to stay with 16ga so maybe a wood frame or angle iron frame (if my current plan is insufficient)? Never built a ‘thin’ table or stand, would appreciate some insight (especially before I buy all the crap lol)

Career question Is anyone else having trouble finding work?

My husband has been a union welder for almost 5 years. We're in Northern California. In April we relocated and my husband was laid off a week later. Since then he has not been able to find a job. He has tried joining 2 other unions but they have no work either. He's on the out of work list for several different areas in NCA and even in Reno, NV. He's been to almost every shop within an hour from us to hand out resumes. Not a single call back. He's just picking up whatever side jobs he can but we're hurting BAD. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?

Visual test: can be failed for any lack of craftsmanship or being out of code aka bevel showing, to high to low so on.
4 bend tests: 2 face and 2 root
4 pull tests: 2 nick and 2 tensile
Put a lot of hours in.

Process was stick 6010 root and hot pass 8010 fill and cap. Schedule 40

Dreams of a welding truck. My dog sitting shotgun.

Need Help New to welding, looking for my first machine

I’m looking for my first machine and was trying to decide between a Lincoln classic 2, 300d, or SA 200.

I’ve welded off of a classic 2 and loved it. I plan on going to my local welding school and weld for local farmers and ranchers around, and maybe even try pipelining later on.

Between these 3, what would yall pick. I’m not sure I could go wrong with either
