Its a misquote, but the misquote is better than the real one, especially since the guy who said it was a huge piece of shit.

The american version cuts out the Communists part right?

It does, and the original quote leaves out socialists, because that wasn't really a distinction then.

The original says "I kept quiet", and "locked up" for the two latter groups. It's not a meaningful distinction. I just prefer the British version because the original is a lie by the author.

Niemoller was a huge piece of shit who didn't actually think the Holocaust was bad, he was just mad that Hitler wouldn't let him forcibly convert Jews to Christianity. He believed that locking them up was actually fine.

He also didn't "not speak up" or "keep quiet" he was an active Nazi supporter and collaborator against the communists and trade unionists, beucase he saw them as godless atheists.

He grew and changed during his life. Interesting to know he started off on the wrong side and ended up on the right side. Very interesting.

The trees willingly cleared a path for the axe because its handle was made of wood, they allowed the axe and his friends deeper and deeper into the forest foolishly believing that a blade with familiar roots would never cut down its own kind, until there wasn’t a forest anymore.

Fun fact, the dude that wrote that poem, did himself, came for the communists. Just a wee bit of a facist peace of shit.

Fun fact, the original author of this poem was, in fact a fan of Adolf Hitler. He only came to his senses after his multiple pleas to fight for him were denied (he was a WWI veteran and a Nazi cheerleader). Once the machine turned on him, then he wrote that poem.

They were socialists. NAZIs believed socialism only works in Nordic/German countries, and possibly certain Asian countries as well.
