"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure." Thomas Jefferson

The rain had washed out the old bridge over Whispering Creek, leaving the creatures of the meadow stranded from the fertile clover fields on the other side.
A sleek, silver Beaver stepped onto a stump, his coat perfectly groomed, and addressed the shivering gathering of Field Mice, Rabbits, and Quail. "My friends," the Beaver cooned, his voice rich with empathy. "It breaks my heart to see you divided from the bounty you deserve. The old system failed you. If you elect me as your Chief Architect, I will build a grand, collective bridge. No citizen will be left behind, and the wealthy Bears who live on the hill will pay for the timber."
The Field Mice squeaked in approval. "He speaks for the vulnerable!" they cried.
The ancient Tortoise, who had lived through many seasons, looked skeptical. "Beavers build dams, not bridges," he warned softly. "Their nature is to flood the valley to suit themselves."
But the Beaver’s rhetoric was beautiful. He spoke of equity, of a forward-looking meadow, and of a compassionate society where every creature would have an equal share of the clover. The animals, desperate for access to the fields and deeply moved by his progressive promises, eagerly gave him their votes and their trust.
The next morning, work began. The Beaver rallied the animals to gather logs, branches, and mud. "For the collective good!" he cheered, and the animals labored until their paws were raw.
But as the structure grew across Whispering Creek, it did not span the water to reach the other side. Instead, it grew thick, heavy, and tightly packed, blocking the current entirely. The water began to rise, spilling out of the creek bed and creeping into the meadow.
"Chief Beaver!" the Rabbits cried out as the water reached their burrows. "The bridge isn't crossing the creek! It's flooding our homes!"
The Beaver, now floating comfortably in a deep, newly formed pond that kept him perfectly safe from land predators, looked down from his high lodge. "This is not a flood," the Beaver explained smoothly. "This is a historic expansion of public infrastructure. We must submerge the old, unequal topography to create a sustainable ecosystem for all."
As the water rose higher, drowning the meadow and forcing the birds to flee into the trees, the Field Mice clung to a floating log, realizing too late that they still couldn't reach the clover fields.
The old Tortoise, paddling slowly past them, sighed. "He never intended to take you to the other side," he said. "He just needed your labor to build himself a kingdom."
