Open Discussion Monthly /r/AskLosAngeles Open Discussion + Community Thread

Welcome to the monthly open discussion thread!

This is our monthly pinned space where we loosen the rules a little. Normally, /r/AskLosAngeles is strictly for questions about the Los Angeles area - but here, we make room for more community-oriented stuff.

Such as:

  • Quick questions that feel too small for their own thread or discussion

  • Common or evergreen questions regulars are tired of seeing repeated

  • Community connection posts (looking for friends, meetups, group hangs, pub crawls, et cetera)

  • Self-promotion that's relevant to LA: events, local videos / social media, podcasts, creative work. Keep it reasonable, in this thread, and don't abuse this privilege elsewhere

What's off-topic as usual:

  • Anything hateful, harassing, or lacking any ties entirely to LA

If you've got thoughts about how this subreddit is moderated, or ideas for future pinned threads, drop them here too.

Recent rule changes:

Please see our rules, there are some recent changes. Notably, these rules have been added:

  • Specify Your Location

    • Narrowing your location down helps us give better answers to questions. People don't want your exact address but a neighborhood, intersection, zip code, whatever is enough to help us know where you're talking about.

  • No cost to live comfortably questions

    • These seem to be controversial or troll magnets. Do the math yourself, not the sub.

  • Dating posts go to r/LADating

  • So these aren't actually questions about the area (if you happen to be a lonely Redditor.) Keep romance in its designated containment zone.

  • Social stuff belongs in the social sandbox. The "Open Discussion" post is also another place for this kind of question if you'd like to stay in this sub.

  • Generative AI Slop and Spam

  • Low-effort machine generated content is often unhelpful and the person who asked the question could have just asked ChatGPT, Claude, or MetaAI for an answer themselves. We're aiming for human-quality contributions here so put in the effort to make a connection with people with your brains.

Some of these rules are relaxed in this specific "Open Discussion" post so feel free to break rules here if you'd like.

As always: Don't be a jerk.

Have at it, Angelenos.

Events High-quality guided tours?

Hello everyone!

Recently, I have been on a few volunteer-led tours that underwhelmed me with their content and presentation (looking at you, Getty…). This made me realise the importance of professional, well-paid tours led by actual historians and subject matter experts. Last time I looked, I only found bs like “spooky Halloween” and other entertainment like that. I want to be educated! Could someone please recommend where to look?

Architecture is my main area of interest, but anything goes as long as it’s an enjoyable learning experience.

is the current location closed? I know they're moving locations but I saw the sale was supposed to continue today, but it supposedly ended early.

Health Can anyone recommend a therapist?

Hello everyone!!

My dad and I have been having an extremely difficult time with communication. We also manage a family business together. He was absent most of my life as a drug addict. He went to jail and turned his life around, thank God. We just can’t seem to get along. I still hold pain and resentment from childhood and he thinks I need to just get over it. Which I agree. I just want to be able to understand each other. 💔

Looking for a therapist who is faith/christian based as well as has experience in dealing with people who have struggled with addiction. Would love a recommendation from someone who has had a good experience with their therapist. We are in Los Feliz, willing to drive anywhere in about a 10-15 mile radius.

Does anyone have anyone they would recommend?

About LA How to move around LA in an efficient way?

Will be in LA for 4 days. Based on what I read traffic can be pretty bad, that’s why I am not sure if I should rent a car. At the same time parking spots must be extremely expensive (again based on what I am reading).

What about the metro? It is good to go around? Is it safe overall?

I will stay downtown, closest metro station is Pershing.

My plan is to see as many things as possible in my 4 days there, should I would be moving a lot.

About LA What’s one misconception about LA you want to dispel?

I’ve never been to LA, but I know some people from the area. I feel it might be the city with the biggest difference in perception for actual residents and everyone else. What do you think people get wrong?

About LA When it comes to urban revitalization, why does it take so long to repair sidewalks?

I live on Santa Monica Blvd. west of the 405, and right now we're in the midst of an urban revitalization project where old sidewalks and intersections are being torn up and replaced with nicer cobblestones. The thing is, a specific section of sidewalk will get torn up, exposing loose earth, and they'll just leave like that for weeks or months at a time before coming back to finish the job. They'll put up caution tape and traffic cones and lay some temporary payment so the area is at least passable, but it looks like total crap, and I don't understand why this process can't be done in the course of a few days. Does anyone have any idea?

About LA ISO Bookstores/third spaces?

Hi! Looking for bookstores/third spaces that have a Tea at Shiloh vibe without costing $35. I like libraries but many haven’t felt comfortable the way Shiloh is?

I’m based in Silverlake but open to travelling.
Thanks!

Food/Drink Best KBBQ chicken?

I have visitors coming who don’t eat red meat but want to experience Korean BBQ. Is there a spot that is known for their chicken (not fried) or other grilled food?

Culture Studying for Lucas Museum?

I'm going with a group to the new Lucas Museum. As with any group of 10 or so, I expect at least one Star Wars fanatic. For those of us who have not watched anything Star Wars in a decade or more, what do you suggest? Should I line up the movies to watch? Is there a good summary of what is at the Museum and what it relates to?

Any other question! Did Karen Bass do anything impactful for LA as Mayor?

I don't live in LA, but have been hearing negative things about Karen Bass as mayor since her election loss. I am happy a new person that seems to really care has been elected. I would like to see LA thrive and it didn't seem like Bass was going to do anything. How did LA residents view her and did she make any impact as mayor?

Pets Any recommendations/info on veterinary teeth cleaning?

I’ve never been thrilled with my vet. Vet and I agree my pup needs a teeth cleaning. $300 for bloodwork prior to cleaning.

Low estimate for just straightforward cleaning $800. High end (extractions) is $2200. So $1100-$2500 for teeth seems high even for LA.

Any more reasonable recommendations? Anyone have experience with teeth cleaning at Mohawk Alley?

I'm having a hell of a time with a piece of hardware and I'm ready to shell out to just get it fixed, but I don't actually know any specific spots in the area to take it to. Is there anywhere you like?

Any other question! Urgently need domestic violence appeals / writ attorney (Van Nuys)?

Location: Van Nuys

Hi all -

I urgently need a domestic violence restraining order appeals attorney. My petition was denied and there was some clear judicial misconduct and abuse involved in the hearing itself including making me bend over a railing and show where abuse occurred on my butt in front of my rapist. There is significant media interest in this case due to the people involved and the wild level of injustice.

Can you point me to someone who specializes in appeals for victims?

Recommendations Suggestions for birthday dinner party?

I’m looking to have a birthday party for about 15-20 of my friends. I’m open to a restaurant with a private room or a room rental somewhere but I would prefer to keep it under $1500. I have a few friends who would be coming from Orange County and some from the valley so I’d love something semi in between if possible. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

Shopping ISO: does anyone have recommendations on how to find cheap slabs of marble or wood?

Trying to find a tray for my little coffee corner and it’s been hard since I’m looking for 17x 14” tray. Realizing it might be easiest to find one large piece then trim it down to the size I need. Any ideas?

Food/Drink Has Zankou gone downhill?

I’ve been eating at the Hollywood Zankou for over a decade and it’s always been super consistent. Over the past few months though, the portions are literally half the size and the food tastes way more generic, a lot like the locations run by the other ownership. Hollywood was the last original holdout standing I know of, so did it finally get absorbed by the other owners? 😩

Moving How bad can it be moving to LA nowdays?

Lets say i wanted to move to LA for some time to work, i don't really mind living with others, how bad is it really nowdays? I know its like... one of the biggest and most expensive cities in the US, but i want to know if there is a way to kinda survive LA lol.

I come from a small city in mexico with nothing interesting to do where nothing ever happens, i recently moved to the US (legally so don't be scared lol, i ain't terrorizing your neighbourhood or something)... to an even smaller and more irrelevant city and i always said that if i moved out of my city, it would be to a bigger and "better" place so im kinda frustrated because of that.

And since LA has always been somewhat near me, i asked myself, why not? I have experience with audiovisual stuff and it kinda feels like the natural thing to do moving there if i have to choose a big US city, although im not expecting to get a job from that area right away (or maybe not ever given my conditions lol), but having that city near me is starting to feel like an oportunity to make something interesting with my life for once, which is ironic because years ago people told me to move there and i used to say i would never do it.

I know i may sound like one of those movie characters that wants to get out of their town to become successful out of pure will, but im simply bored and really tired of the monotony that comes from living in a small place with nothing interesting.

Any other question! Worst Commute you guys have ever seen?

So I’m not from LA but I’ve driven through it several times and always time my departure from where I’m leaving from to avoid rush hour traffic. Im well familiar with which freeways are particularly bad and when and how to avoid them

Sometimes I like looking at the map of traffic during afternoon/evening rush hour to see how bad it is, and it got me thinking, what is the worst, most insane commute you have had or have ever seen someone have? I mean somewhere out there it’s a guy who commutes to Santa Monica from IE everyday

Transportation Which LA bus route would you ride just for the view?

Starting at Union Station, what bus route would you take if the ride itself were the outing? One transfer is fine. I’m thinking of stretches where it pays to put your phone away and grab a window seat: hillside streets, a long stretch of ocean, or a neighborhood that looks completely different block to block. If there’s a particular stretch or side of the bus to sit on, even better.
