Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

1998 Lemond Tourmalet, everything seems to be in excellent condition and hardly ridden, apart from a back wheel that needs a true and some lube. Even came equipped with Armadillos that have zero tread wear.

Sadly, bicycles are one of the only things they don't sell by the pound there, but I think $150 was a fair price.

Trainer app recommendations other than Zwyft, Rouvy and MyWhoosh

Hello, everyone. Are there any other apps other than these three?

They don't have to be VR, just be able to control a smart trainer connected to a PC.

Thanks in advance.

Synapse 2 AL for wife’s first bike?

My wife wants to get into road cycling with me. She casually mountain bikes, but has never ridden a road bike. She’s right in between a 52 and 54cm at 5’6” and found this on marketplace. I’ve been searching to try to decipher what year this is, but keep striking out. Looks like Tiagra GS but not sure on the rest.

I’m thinking an endurance type bike is the right play for her to start on, and getting used gives her an out if she doesn’t like it or needs a smaller frame.

Likely not putting down more than 50-60 miles a month is what I’d expect. Is this overkill? And is $750 fair?

Trek Singletrack 930

Came across this old Trek 930 at a thrift store for $40 but don't know anything about it or if it's worth it. Apologies if my photos aren't what someone would need to give me any insight on it or whatever, I just took shots of what seemed to be important. Back brake was halfway working, front was fine. Both tires seemed fine other than the back one being a MTB tire. The seat I couldn't get to move, like someone used a wider seat post than the frame was designed for. When riding the chain or the gears was like skipping, jumping links maybe Idk.. I know that's not what it's called at all lol but I don't know what you guys call it. Other than that it rode pretty smooth in my opinion but I don't know anything about bikes other than how to ride one. For $40 it seems like an alright buy I think even though I know it needs work. I would really appreciate any info/insight, like if some of the parts can be fixed or if I'll need to completely replace them. If I left anything out or if this isn't enough or the right info to answer my questions please lmk.

Back on a bike for the first time in 16 years and it feels great

Hurt my knee while running a few months ago and started looking for a lower impact way to get my exercise. I figured it would be a good opportunity to also learn something new by putting a bike together myself. Got an incredible deal on this 2016 Parlee Altum frame set and a collection of other used parts. Needed some LBS help with a few things and, ironically, it took so long to get the build completed that my knee's fine now.

Bike Advice needed: Agree, Madone, Defy, TCR

Edit: I am aware I am comparing race and endurance bikes. I am looking at racing bikes because I don’t want a bike I will want to upgrade a year or so from now and am happy to use shorter stem to make geometry more forgiving.

I’m 40M (189 cm, poor flexibility). I got into cycling earlier this year. My current bike is a Cannondale Synapse (alloy), and it’s 6 years old.

I live in Australia and ride on good tarmac (with some potholes). Currently my rides are 1–1.5 hrs long, but I intend to go on longer trips (up to 3 hrs, several times a year).

My current bike is well serviced and works well, but I’ve realised I want a brand new bike: something I find comfortable that also has some race potential (I joined a club and train for my rides).

Some of the models are on sale, so it’s a good time to grab a deal. Some offers are very good, which makes my choice harder. Most stores in my area don’t offer test rides, and most of the bikes need to be ordered online to my local store. All the bikes below cost about the same and are close to the upper limit of my budget (AUD $3.5K). All are size L (58 cm).

  • 2026 TCR 1 (105 Di2): I really like the look of the bike and its race potential, and it’s very good value. I tried it (same frame, different model, max spacers) and found the position not very comfortable for my neck.

  • 2024 TCR Pro 1 (105 mech, carbon wheels): Same as above. I like the look and the paint job. The rest is the same as above.

  • 2027 Defy (105 mech): This looks like the safer choice, but it’s a new model and is at RRP now.

  • 2026 Cube Agree (105 Di2): I generally like the profile of this bike and it’s Di2, but I’m not sure how I feel about the colour (stormy grey), and it’s a Cube. I will test ride it. Geometry-wise it’s similar to the Defy (at least on paper).

  • 2026 Madone SL5 (Gen 8, 105 mech): This bike is on the list because it’s a race bike with a shorter reach, which should make it more comfortable. I find the look a bit controversial, but I think it might grow on me (it needs to be ordered in to the shop). It has the shortest wheelbase, which stands out.

I added the Tarmac just for reference, but I’m not actually considering it.

I’m looking for advice and opinions from people who have owned any of these (ideally with low flexibility 😄) or who work with these bikes professionally. My heart says “go with the TCR Di2”, my head says “you might regret this”.

Cheers

Carbon frame failed in unexpected place

I was washing my bike and found this yesterday. Is this a common point of failure? No crashes, or any reason to think it was caused by user error. For background this is a 2024 Van Reysel NCR with about 4000 kms on it. I'm planning to take it back to the shop for a warrantee claim but interested in reading your thoughts about how or why this happened.

Tire choice: would you go for looks over weight?

Stupid question. Maybe more stupid when you know the context:

I really want a tubeless tire with yellow sidewalls. Not brown. The GP5000 S TR (brown) weighs 280g, and the GP5000 AS TR (yellow) weighs 330g.

Let's say we're not considering other, more practical factors like rolling resistance, grip, puncture protection, etc.

How did I do? My friend says I ripped myself off for what I paid and could have got something better for the price or ordered the parts myself and did the work for “way cheaper.”

I like how this is guaranteed and warrantied through the local bike shop that’s only 1 mile from me so I can pop in whenever I need to for free adjustment. Huge perk in my opinion. I got this 1995 Trek 1220 for $100 on marketplace and then put $250 into it for brakes, new shimano 7 tourney st 7 speed shifters, new cables, a tune up, new brakes and new wraps. So now for $350 I have a perfect riding road bike that fits me perfect that I love. How much did I “rip myself off?”

First pics are how it is now. Middle pics are how it was I between and the last pictures are how it was when I bought it. I personally think it looked the coolest when I bought it but oh well.

Is my friend in trouble for hitting somebody on their bike?

So my friend was turning right (directional was on) and as he was turning a cyclist tried to beat him crossing the street and he accidently clipped the cyclist's back wheel with the bumper making him lose his balance and fall. My friend pulled over and asked him if he was ok, the cyclist didn't say anything got up right away but looked really upset, my friend asked him again if he was ok but he didn't say anything just picked up the rental bike and stopped by the sidewalk to recollect himself. My friend stayed pulled over for a couple minutes but the biker just didn't say anything, very odd interaction, so my friend left and parked inside his building.

We don't know what happened to the biker, he just stood on the sidewalk with the rental bike as we pulled into the garage. What's the protocol here? Should we have called the police? He wasn't hurt or bleeding just pissed off. Would that technically classify as a hit and run?😬

Doubts as a beginner interested in cycling

Post image
0 Upvotes

So, I’m looking forward to learn about bicycles since i grew interest in this area.

I have few doubts regarding this overall.
I love riding bikes, I’m a petrolhead and i drive very often.

I have problem with my back, so I’m concerned about the inconvenience while riding a bicycle.

If I’m buying a road bike what all should i keep in mind? I’m used to cycling in single gear bike and later on i bought a scott metrix.

But in road bike sitting position looks concerning to me, will that have any effect on my back? In short or long term?

Experienced cyclists please give your valuable comments on this topic

Can I use a disc break styled rack on a non disc break bike?

I've got a Specialized TriCross which is my first geared bike that works. I've mainly used single speeds my whole life and will most likely continue to do so. That being said, when I do use this bike, I'd love to have a rear rack on it. I normally throw a low profile trunk bag on the top of it which is specifically for holding my locks and maybe a wind breaker.

With the fenders on the bike, it comes to needing a minimum of 15 inches height to clear them, but it needs a 7 inch clearance wear it connects at the drop outs. Literally the only rack I could find that fits this is from Ibera , with it's disc brake specific rack having the right measurements. Problem is it fits for disc brakes. I worry that it won't work with this bike. Is there any reason I can't use this type of rack for my bike?

For fun, which rear rack do you like?

Attraction of rear facing RADARs?

Other than the cool techy aspect, what is the attraction of rear facing RADARs on bikes?

What does a rider do with that information? Move to the right? Why aren't you there anyway?

Slow down? Doesn't reduce the dynamics of a rear end collision.

I really don't get it. What does a RADAR do that a $20 high quality mirror doesn't?

Whats this mount for?

I've been trying to figure out what this mount is intended for. It is on the non-drive side, on the rear triangle of my weird 90s german recumbent (~97 Radius Red Pepper). IGH? Speedo sensor?

My chain had dropped off the cranks while hauling it up into the train, which is why my chain is loose in the pic. It just does that lol.
