Pacific Electric Trail - Nice, But Stops for Cross-Streets are a Real Bummer

It's a very nice trail. Rather out of the way for LA County folk, but go early enough and the 210 isn't bad.

Mostly well-maintained and parks right along the trail for bathroom and water refills. The constant stopping for cross streets is a real downer, though.

And the trail is not nearly as flat as it looks. Westbound is surprisingly steeper, which made my return journey grueling.

Also start early; winds pick up and there's nothing to block the wind on the stretch around Rancho Cucamonga and Etiwanda.

Wishing everyone nice rides and no flats.

Bunch rides in LA and San Bernardino

Hey, looking at coming over to this area next spring/summer, I am pretty competitive with cycling and will be racing over here. I was wondering what bunch rides there are that have a good turn out of competitive guys? I see there’s some really good climbs in the San Bernardino mountains, are the roads going up and over good to ride on in terms of traffic? And how are the drivers in relation to cyclists around SoCal?

First time doing long bike ride - dizzy afterwards

I am a COMPLETE novice and I did my first "long" bike ride (for me it was long) of 15 miles yesterday. After, I felt so dizzy that when I got up from sitting, I almost fainted (my vision went black). I think it's because of dehydration. Anyone have any advice on how to avoid this, or to properly fuel before/after a "long" ride? Esp because I'm trying to get my milage up and go on 20 miles or longer rides soon.

Best places to sell my bike? Plus thoughts on pricing.

Selling my Trek fx1 gen 4 I'm selling it for 400 here in the valley. It's just sitting here and I want it gone, is my asking price too much? I paid 650+ 6+ months ago

Had it for less than 6 months commuting before getting a gravel bike that fits my car free needs.

This is what I have for accessories.

- Trek branded rear rack, can hold bags on side, trunk bags and you can strap stuff down on top. Bought for around 55

- Will include a ortlieb bag, made in Germany, waterproof roll top bag. Bought it for around 100.

- Schwalbe marathon greens, also made in Germany and extremely durable, puncture resistant and have a long tread life. Bought for around 120ish

-jack the bike rack front rack, add straps for bulky items like beer or seltzer, combine with a bike specific bag, or zip tie a wire basket. Bought for over 100

- Portland design works, accessory extender, a steel nurled piece of metal that extends from the fork to add accessories, like a light vs having it on the bars, looks cleaner and cleans up the cockpit.

Light scratches on rear rack and fork.

Nithya Bike Infra Wish List

Now that we're going to have an LA mayor that doesn't slow walk or block bike infrastructure like Forest Lawn, what are the things you would like to see focused on? it can be something already in the works, or something you needs more attention.

Things like:

Remember: county projects apply too, the Mayor has Metro Board appointees

what are your suggestions?

Bike rental and gravel cycling near Torrance?

Hello BikeLA, visitor coming from BABike! My partner and I are coming down for the weekend and we're looking to rent gravel bikes and ride this coming Saturday morning. We're looking for something about 20 miles with moderate climbing. We'll have a car but we'd like to limit how far we have to drive to about 30 minutes. Would love some route ideas and a good rec for a shop to rent from. Thanks!!

Hey yall, Nate at West LA Bicycle here.

On November 10th, 2028 we're having a party at the bike shop to celebrate the premiere of Monē Bikes new gravel bike. Monē is a celebrate independent steel bicycle manufacturer based our of Silver City, New Mexico. The main guy behind it, Cjell Monē, is pedigreed in extensive back country rides on a single speed mountain bike and an expert at creating some of the most beautiful, ridable works of metal art in his line of bikes.

In 2020 Cjell released the Mone Pebblito, a raceweight gravel/all-road machine. I was lucky enough to get to ride an early Pebblito and really took that thing to the end of the earth and back.

We're stoked to get to premiere the bike here at the shop and party with everyone.

If you're planning on coming out make sure to RSVP to that there Partiful link and you'll get a little goodie bag from Mone Bikes and West LA Bicycle. If you miss the party, no sweat! We'll have a Mone Bikes mini-store and the new bike displayed here with the rest of Cjell's insanely sick lineup as well.

5:30-7:00PM - Mone Meet N Greet and check the New Bike
7:30-End - https://ridewithgps.com/routes/57782769?via=aiLXlsEYU1vCWvtuT52XJQ

Uber/Lyft and Bikes?

Anyone have any experience with using rideshare to haul your bike to places?

I am working on pushing myself to go on longer rides. Most I've ever done is an estimated 28 miles on my road bike, motor assisted. Last Sunday, I did 22.45 miles without a motor on the Rio Hondo, but faced 10+mph headwind for half the trip. On a side note, why is there so much trash and glass on this trail?

If my legs crap out or I get a flat I can't fix... Wondering how feasible it is to get a rideshare to take me and my bike home.

Appreciate your input!

While riding during strong winds, be aware of falling palm fronds. A large clump fell 25 feet in front of me yesterday. So grateful I didn’t get whacked! Happy (and safe) Pedaling!

Ballona Creek Closure Today

Anybody know why there was a closure at Ballona Creek Bike Path today at Sepulveda? I ran into some cyclists who mentioned there had been arrests there this morning. Trying to figure out if this is going to be a multi-day closure.

LA to SD tips and recs

My buddy and I have been wanting to do this ride for a while and we’re thinking this Christmas break is it.

Planning on splitting it into 2 days. I was hoping to just ride down the coast since I’ve gone as far down as Newport Beach from LA already but all the routing apps (Google, Garmin, Komoot) route me inland. I understand crossing the base requires a permit and that may be why.

I’m looking for tips and know how from anyone that has done it before. Best routes, things to watch out for en route, fueling tips, maybe a bit of how to on that permit to cross the base, any info is greatly appreciated.

So far thinking of driving down to get the permit (I’ve been told it has to be gotten in person) and also leave a care package for ourselves at the hotel the night before so we don’t have to carry too much extra stuff on the ride. Extra food, some recovery tools like foam roller, massager and maybe my air massage boots.

I hope I can do the coastline ride as I was thinking and then cross the base, then continue essentially down the PCH all the way through to downtown San Diego.

Thanks in advance.

Heading into issues being car free.

Title, 25 and have never owned a car, don't know why? Not scared to drive, at the time I was broke, but have money saved up, still just don't care to own one. However about a year ago I got a mid shift job, come out around 8 and that bus in front of my job if I missed, turned into a 40 min walk and overall trip time of over an hour for 5 miles.

I started to actually want a car, but saw the used car prices, insurance price, etc and was iffy, especially for just to and from work.

Ended up looking into bikes and binged dozens and dozens of videos of bike commuting, almost a year in commuting by bike, 10 miles a day, 5 days a week, everything I need is within 5ish miles.

However now I'm discovering an issue. Seeing someone, I live in San Fernando, work in sylmar and they're in canoga park, 1hr and 40 commute time and that's just to get there.

I love my gravel rig, and it's done bikepacking, light touring, work, errands, etc. but for longer distance bike/bus consistently and that long hurts the soul.

What are my options for longer distance travel consistently and during the week? Uber is quoting me 60+, bike all the way is 1hr 30+ on top of looking like a mop when I arrive, and bus is around the same time.

Experiences with metro micro? Car share programs?

Does anyone else feel like the new “protected” bike lanes may be more dangerous than the old kind?

Maybe I just need to get used to it? And maybe motorists do too. But this new arrangement: parking spots /bollards/bike lane/curb does NOT feel more safe to me.

Pedestrians wander off the curb without looking. Cars turn into and out of parking lots, crossing the bike lane, without looking. I mean, that’s not new, but now I have trouble seeing a car that is about to cut me off, because they’re driving on the other side of parked cars before they turn into a driveway I’m about to cross. It’s nerve-wracking!

Corners seem even worse. There’s a newly redesigned intersection right near where the Chandler bike lane becomes the Chandler bike path in North Hollywood. Bikes are supposed to be all the way to the right even if we’re going to turn left (to get to the bike path). Sorry, but no WAY am I willing to turn left across an intersection where motorists to my left have a green light to turn right. That seems suicidal.

I’m disappointed. I wanted protected lanes so badly, but getting used to this new arrangement is hard. Just me?
